Excellence Beyond Compare

O

nce again, congratulations to all the the worthy winners of the 16th Asian Achievers Awards! They have truly done the nation proud through their passion, dedication and undeterred pursuit of excellence in their chosen fields. With each passing year, I am pleasantly amazed by the sheer talent that we unearth through the Asian Achievers Awards – of women and men who make a mockery of what some would regard as the impossible. The soccer wizard, Pele, once said, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” I am sure that each of those pithy words of wisdom will ring true with the winners. Success is not a destination, it is an indelible mark that one leaves behind on the journey towards greater glory. And I urge the winners, and indeed all those who were shortlisted and nominated, to press on to blaze new trails, conquer new territories and arouse in those around them a passion to discover their true destinies. Since its inception it has never been our aim to make The Asian Achievers Awards just another gala event, for such events are available in abundance. Nay, far from it, this is a true recognition of excellence bestowed upon by worthy individuals by the readers of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar and indeed by the wider British Asian community - it is the people's awards. And it will continue to be so without the slightest compromise. For us at the ABPL group it is our lifelong mission and a continuous process of identifying and rewarding genuine talent and exceptional achievement. The quality and calibre of UK professionals are second to none and the services of our professionals are held in high esteem over the world. It is a matter of great pride for British Asians that so many of them now occupy high ranking and strategic positions within the professions. In order to honour them the theme of this year's Awards was the Professions. The nominations that we received this year posed a

tremendous challenge to the judges, for such was the high quality and sheer numbers of the nominations. The awards were presented following a rigorous judging process by an independent panel of eminent personalities from diverse backgrounds, headed by Nishma Robb, Head of Commercial Marketing, Google UK. The awards evening saw a gathering of over 850 eminent guests from various communities - captains of industries, doyens of academia , sports personalities, members of parliament, thespians, philanthropies and many more. What must be the highest amount raised so far, the generosity of the esteemed guests saw over £180,000 raised at the evening for the charity Indian Ocean Disaster Relief. That surely was the highlight of the evening. All our efforts would not have been possible without the unflinching support of our readers and the magnanimity of the eminent guests who graced the Awards ceremony. I must also make a very special mention of the Awards sponsors – EY, The Edwardian Group, Shanti Hospitality and The Army for their generosity – your gesture is deeply appreciated by the ABPL group and all our readers. Planning and organising the Awards is an arduous and long drawn process. I would like to acknowledge the efforts put in by the ABPL team led very ably by L George, our CEO. Readers will be pleased to learn that we have already set the ball rolling for the Asian Achievers Awards 2017 and going by the past I am confident that you will wholeheartedly join us in our endeavour to identify and honour men and women who have made it their mission to pursue excellence against all odds. Yours sincerely

Farrah Storr, Suresh Vagjiani, Sow & Reap Ltd, The Singh Twins, Tony Lit, Sunrise Radio and Nitin Ganatra Sponsor

London-born twin sisters Dr Amrit Singh MBE and Dr Rabindra Singh MBE are contemporary British artists of international standing. Their award winning paintings have been acknowledged as constituting a unique genre in British Art and for initiating a new movement in the revival of the Indian miniature tradition within modern art practice. Describing their work as Past-Modern (as opposed to Post Modern), their work challenges existing stereotypes and redefines the generally accepted, narrow perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society. Combining elements from Western and Eastern aesthetics they assert the value of traditional and non-European art forms to the continuing development of Contemporary Art practice. They explore cultural, social and political issues of global significance within a highly decorative, often witty and symbolic style. They have exhibited in some of Britain’s most prestigious art venues. Their work has also toured to Museums and Galleries around the world. The Singh Twins’ recent projects include a portrait of Maharaja Duleep Singh and a collaboration with Indian Fashion Designer, Tarun Tahiliani, whose 2015 Spring Summer Collection is inspired by their artwork.

What winners have to say...

Singh Twins Dr Amrit & Dr Rabindra Kaur Singh Achievement in Media, Arts and Culture

Asian arts is making an impact within our own community as well – they are not always taken seriously and we are trying to compete against businesses, sports people, and media has been problematic really so we are absolutely delighted that visual arts has got recognition.

I was coming here to have a nice time. I was quite honoured to be invited because this is the first time that I have been invited to such an evening but I did not really expect to win the awards. It's such a surprise. There’s always a need for people to be recognised and that gives them more enthusiasm and more want in life and encourages people.

Zlakha Ahmed MBE

Professional of the Year

Achievement in Community Service

It's amazing. As an Asian community we have been here for many years – 60/70 years but often our achievements are not brought to the forefront. So to have an evening like this where people’s achievements are brought out is excellent.

Ryan Raghoo

Sports Personality of the Year

This is the first time I have been nominated for an award in my entire sporting career. So for me it's actually nice to be recognised – somewhere people with disabilities are achieving something and we need to talk about it. Even without this award I am going to be doing what I have been doing…going to schools everyday and saying that if you’ve got a disability you can still achieve what you want to. I would like to say thank you to everyone in the Asian Achievers Awards for having me and for this award.

Manjit K Gill

I think it's particularly important in the 21st century to recognise the Asian community has advanced a great distance from where it had started fifty years ago. Most importantly the fact that we have penetrated almost every sector of the economy and society and we now have professionals working in different capacities and have risen to the very top of their respective fields and that they now are setting examples for younger people are inspirational role models and if we celebrate their success by having these sorts of events it's important to get their story out to society at large.

Dr Nikesh Kotecha

Business person of the year

What a surprise… a real honour to be awarded something like that when there are so many inspirational people in the audience. I think any entrepreneur needs a lot of hard work. We all need a bit of luck and we have to take some right decisions as well. If I can do it, there are lots of other people who can do it and you’ve got to give it a go.

Jo Sidhu QC

I feel quite humbled because Lifetime Achievement Awards are given to people who have done a long service in their life – I am not so sure I qualify.

Being recognised for the work that we are doing really helps. I am really hoping that we can create awareness around the work we do. Every girl deserves dignity. Period.
