British Chancellor George Osborne criticised the Indian plan to retroactively tax business deals, saying it could damage foreign investment in the fast-developing country. A proposal to allow Indian authorities to make retroactive tax claims is widely seen as targeting British mobile phone giant Vodafone, which has been battling the Manmohan Singh government over alleged unpaid taxes. In a conversation with his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Monday, Mr Osborne said, “We are concerned that the budget measure will not just impact one company,

Vodafone, but because we think that it will damage the overall climate for investment in India.” The Chancellor's comments came as the international business community launched a stinging attack against the Indian government's decision. An event called “Mayoral Hustings” was organised in the City to facilitate dialogue between concerned citizens and the Mayoral candidates viz. James Cleverly (Tory on behalf of Boris Johnson), Valerie Shawcross, (Labour on behalf of Ken Livingstone), Brian Paddick (Lib Dem), Natalie Benett (Green Party), Lawrence Webb (UKIP), Siobhan Benita (Independent), had a roaring turnover of around 350 people, and was efficiently chaired by Jasvir Singh, a member of the City Sikhs Network. Both Galloway and Livingstone recently stunned Britons as they devised ‘religion’ to use as a tool for attracting voters. It came as a shocker for other communities in Britain who have made enormous economic con-

tribution to the British society without government assistance. Though this debate was not attended by Livingstone himself (or by Boris in that case), his representative Valerie Shawcross, CBE (Labour) appeared well briefed. Continued on page 2
