Met begins action against racist policemen

10 claims of racism. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the claims which include bullying, abuse and physical assault. Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, told BBC News Channel that the IPCC would expedite the inquiry. "When there are cases of this kind they have to be dealt with immediately and they have to be dealt with properly otherwise there is a public perception that people don't care," Mr Vaz said. He suggested that another organisation, such as Her Majesty's Inspectorate of C o n s t a b u l a r y, Continued on page 26

The Scotland Yard has been criticized for its record on racism. A senior police officer has joined criticism against Metropolitan police, saying warnings have fallen on "deaf ears" for more than a decade. Supt Leroy Logan, of the Black Police Association, said the Met needed to put racial issues "back on the agenda". Two former senior Metropolitan Police officers have also criticised the force after eight officers were suspended over allegations of racism. The force has said racist language is "abhorrent" and not tolerated. In total, 18 officers and one civilian staff member are being investigated in relation to

Act against terrorists if you want peace: Manmohan tells Zardari India reacted positively to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s fresh bid for normalization of ties, but made it clear that Pakistan would have to take substantive steps on terrorism for peace to break out among the nuclear-armed neighbours. In a closeddoor meeting, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made it clear to Zardari that Pakistan would be tested by its actions against the Mumbai attacks’ perpetrators. Mr Singh referred to LeT chief Hafiz Saeed in this context, making it clear India had not changed its bottom line so far as its demand for concrete action against terrorism is concerned. Briefing media persons later, foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai said the two leaders discussed the problem of terrorism, which is a major issue by which the Indian people will judge progress in the bilateral relationship. Mr Singh told President Zardari that it was imperative to bring the perpetrators of the

Mumbai attack to justice, and prevent activities aimed against India from Pakistani soil. In this context, Mr Singh also mentioned the activities of Hafiz Saeed. Expectedly, Zardari referred the matter back to the two governments. However, Zardari also said that Saeed had been arrested several times but the courts

released him every time for lack of evidence. He asked India to provide evidence against Saeed. Zardari raised the issue of J&K, leading Mr Singh to say that steps for resolution of the dispute will have to move in tandem with what Islamabad does to meet India’s concerns about terrorism. The two agreed that issue of

terrorism will be taken up along with disputes over Siachen and Sir Creek during the coming meeting of home secretaries. The absence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from the lunch was felt acutely. No official reason was given for her absence, leading analysts to remark that she may have been distancing herself from a potentially risky initiative. Pakistan analyst B Raman said her absence showed that Mr Singh’s diplomatic initiative will have to be tempered with public opinion. Mr Zardari and his son and PPP chairman Bilawal prayed in private at the mausoleum of the 12th century Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer after which Zardari announced a donation of $1 million for the shrine. This is the largest monetary offering ever made by a visiting head of state at the dargah sharif. Zardari expressed “great spiritual happiness” after reading aloud some verses from the Koran at the crypt of the Khwaja with Bilawal.
