tion, you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back," Obama told his supporters. Barack Hussein Obama was re-elected president of the United States on Tuesday, overcoming powerful economic headwinds, a lockstep resistance to his agenda by Republicans in Congress and an unprecedented torrent of advertising as a divided nation voted to give him more time. In defeating Mitt Romney, Obama carried Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia and Wisconsin, a near sweep of the battleground states, and was holding a narrow advantage in Florida. The path to victory for Mr Romney narrowed as the night wore along, with Mr Obama winning at least 303 electoral votes. A cheer of jubilation sounded at the Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago when the television networks began projecting him as the winner, even as the ballots were still being counted in many states where voters had waited in line well into the night. The victory was far narrower than his historic election four years ago, but it was no less dramatic. "Tonight in this elec-

His path followed a pattern that has been an arc to his political career: faltering when he seemed to be at his strongest - the period before his first debate with Mr Romney - before he redoubled his efforts to lift himself and his supporters to victory. The evening was not without the drama that

has come to mark so many recent elections: For more than 90 minutes after the networks projected Mr Obama as the winner, Mr Romney held off calling him to concede. And as the president waited to declare victory in Chicago, Mr. Romney's aides were prepared to head to the airport, suitcases packed, potentially to contest several close results. BJP backs Gadkari, but cracks remain The BJP came out in support of beleaguered party president Nitin Gadkari, who faces allegations of financial impropriety in his business dealings, saying a probe had shown that he had done “no legal or moral wrong.” Addressing the media after a two-hour meeting of its core group, Bharatiya Janata Party chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad also said that the party “endorses Gadkari's stand that he is ready and willing to face a probe” into his business dealings. Gadkari has been under attack for alleged dubious funding of his Purti Group. He has denied the charges. According to Prasad, senior BJP leaders had called chartered accountant S Gurumurthy to the meeting to apprise them of his findings after going through the documents provided by Gadkari. Senior leader L K Advani did not attend the meeting as he had already been apprised by Gurumurthy of his findings, while Gadkari kept away so that the talks could be held in an "impartial and free manner". Prasad read out a joint statement by senior party

leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley which said: “The meeting accepted the presentation of Gurumurthy that there was no legal or moral wrongdoing by Gadkari. The party endorses the stand of Gadkari that he is ready and willing to face an inquiry. He has no direct or indirect interest in the 18 investment companies that have invested in Purti Group. The party has full faith in the leadership of Gadkari. The party appeals to all its leaders and workers not to air such views in public which hurt the image of the party." However, divisions persisted within BJP over the continuance of Gadkari as its president. The party's second public backing for Gadkari in a Continued on page 26
