Local elections 2023: Tories lose massive seats; Sunak under pressure

Rishi Sunak lost control of 50 councils in his first electoral test as Prime Minister The Tories lost 48 councils and more than 1,000 counci llors acr os s E ngla nd in Thursday's polls, exceeding their worst predictions The shocking part is the places they lost where they traditionally enjoyed strong support including the southern heartlands Labour says it is now the largest party in local government, surpassing the Tories for the first time since 2002 "The British public has sent a clear rejection of a prime minister who never had a mandate, to begin with," a Labour spokesperson said

For the first time, levelling up secretary, former leadership contender and Surrey Heath MP Michael Gove witnessed the council in his constituency go to the Lib Dems While Surrey Heath Tory councillors lost 12 seats, the Greens lost two Meanwhile, amidst the massive losses in local elections, Labour has said that the party is on track to cease power at the next general election

Labour made important gains in the north of England and the Midlands, as well as taking southern councils such as Plymouth, Swindon, Dover and Medway Since the days of Tony Blair in 2022, it has not happened that Labour celebrated becoming the largest party in local government

Labour took over Windsor and Maidenhead, the local council of former prime minister Theresa May, and Stratford-upon-Avon, the seat of the former chancellor Nadhim Zahawi

While Sunak and his party chairman, Greg Hands, tried to put a positive spin on the results, some Tory MPs expressed displeasure at the loss Tension in Conservative unity has already begun with Rehman Chishti, a former leadership contender, criticising Suella Braverman’s rhetoric on immigration Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer claimed his party was on course to win the next general election, expected next year
