Dear Financia Voice Reader Alpesh Patel OBE

I’ve been speaking to a few people about the stocks in their pensions Here’s what I’ve learnt and lessons for them

• Few people realise they can have a SIPP or ISA tax free and invest in stocks

• Fewer still know how easy it is

• Most thought they could only buy UK stocks

• Many didn’t realise that the stocks they can pick are the same that fund managers pick on their behalf

• Many did not realise they can have US companies such as Microsoft

• When asked many felt that if they picked the same stocks as a fund manager, their chosen picks would somehow be wrong Even though they were the same stocks

• Many did not realise that most fund managers do not outperform the broader market

• Many did not know how to open an online account to do this, even though they have online banking and other online accounts

• Some thought there would be more tax forms, there would not

• Most knew that experts charge fees annually and these could be removed by picking the companies themselves

• Most did not know that their workplace pension is invested through funds into stocks

• Most thought investing in funds is safer than investing in individual stocks – even when shown that funds are made up of stocks

• Most did not realise IFAs and fund managers try to match a benchmark, not produce an absolute positive return and so just add more or less stocks than in the benchmark

• Most did not realise how big an impact over time underperformance is on their retirement funds

• Most did not know that the Government adds to money you put in a SIPP and gains are grown tax free

• None knew the Nobel Prize in Economics a few years ago went Eugene Fama and how important his work was

Financial advisors and fund managers have long been sought after for their expertise in investment management However, with the advancements in technology and the democratization of information, individual investors can now manage their own portfolios with ease Drawing on the work of Eugene Fama, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, this article highlights the key reasons why individuals should consider investing themselves rather than relying on IFAs or fund managers

Investing in yourself eliminates the need to pay fees to IFAs or fund managers, which can be quite substantial over time These fees often include a percentage of assets under management, commissions, and other hidden charges

Managing your own investments allows for greater control and customization of your portfolio Individuals can tailor their investment strategy to their specific risk tolerance, financial goals, and personal values, without being restricted by the limitations or biases of an IFA or fund manager This can lead to more satisfying investment outcomes and a greater sense of financial ownership

Investing in yourself encourages financial literacy and fosters a sense of self-reliance By learning the ins and outs of investing, individuals can make more informed decisions about their financial future, not only in investing but also in other aspects of their lives This knowledge can also be passed down to future generations, creating a lasting legacy of financial empowerment
