Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf prayed at the Ajmer Sharif shrine for peace in his country during his
short visit to Ajmer and Jaipur, where India’s external affairs Minister Salman Khurshid hosted lunch for him but no bilateral issue, including terrorism, was discussed. Ashraf, accompanied by a 40-member delegation, including 20 family members, was received at the Sanganer airport in Jaipur by Rajasthan government officials and straight away drove to the lunch venue, Rambagh Palace. Rupanjana Dutta PM David Cameron marked the start of National Apprenticeship Week, and met young apprentices at training academies in Milton Keynes on Monday and Buckinghamshire later in the week. He challenged the employers, educators, and the government on how we can reach this aspiration and expand apprenticeship opportunities for young people, so that those who aspire to get ahead and want to take one up can. This is similar to what happens in Germany where the vast majority of school leavers go to university
or into an apprenticeship to build a stronger economy. The Coalition Government is investing almost £1.5bn on this programme in 2013. The National Apprenticeship Week is definitely a step in the right direction, but Mr Cameron we must dare to ask you, how well do you know the 'realities' of your own country? To extend equal apprenticeship opportunities to the BAMEs, you need a different approach- an extra effort, some more research and a comprehensive study of the existing gap. We do not know if you are aware,
but the BAMEs do have a glass ceiling to break and while you preach about an equal and meritocratic society, let’s look at the exact figures of the BAMEs in unemployment or universities. As per the report of organisation like TUC on Youth unemployment and ethnicity, an analysis shows that among ethnic minority groups, White young people have the lowest unemployment rates (20%), Asians (29%), while Black groups have a rate that is more than twice as high (45%). The unemployment rate for Indian, Pakistani/ Bangladeshi
groups is around 10 percentage points higher than for White groups, and Black / African / Caribbean groups are more than twice as likely to be unemployed than their White counterparts. The unemployment rate for these groups is more than double the national youth rate. Some 265,730 people living in Britain had applied to start degree courses this autumn by December 17, and figures show that it is down by 6.3 per cent on the same point from the previous year.
