1,200 Indian workers held hostage in Angola

Brent Council leader ousted by deputy leader over local concerns

One thousand and two hundred Indians working at a cement factory near Sumbe city of Angola in Africa have been held captive in a factory. While some who have fled to the nearby jungles, continued to suffer in silence with no end in sight to the six-dayold crisis.

Vijay Valmik hailing from Petlad town in Gujarat, who first sought help through his father from a forest, told the latter that the company had started harassing his friends at the plant to enquire about his location. The Indian workers went on strike from April 16 to demand

payment of overtime dues since February in US dollars instead of the local currency. The labourers turned violent on May 9 when the company refused to accept their demand even after agitating for 24 days. Apart from 40 Gujaratis, other workers are mainly from Andhra

The leader of Brent Council, Ann John OBE, has been ousted by her deputy Cllr Mohammad Butt. Cllr Butt was elected as the leader of the Labour-run administration at a Labour AGM on Friday (May 11). He won against Cllr Ann John OBE by 21 votes to 19. It has been rumoured that the way cuts like Navratri, and particularly library closures, have been handled by Cllr John, appeared to have been the motivating factor for this change. Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana, all of whom had been lured by a Chennai-based recruitment firm with a promise of handsome salaries and overtime on a two-year contract. The company told local journalists that the overtime was usually paid at site in US dollars but after February 2012, because of local issues, the banks were not issued US dollars and there was a shortage of the same. According to Valmik’s father, his son had learnt from Angolan newspapers that the company had been defending its decision to seek police help and explaining why passports of the workers had been taken by the employers. A top company official was also quoted as saying that work permit needed to be obtained from the Angolan authorities for employment, and to comply with this regulation, passports of all staff were submitted to the immigration department for processing of work visa.
