Mukherjee all set to be the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee
India’s former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is set to win the presidential election on Thursday (July 19), with some analysts predicting he may wield an unusual degree of influence in the ceremonial role. The result of the vote by national and state lawmakers will be announced on Sunday (July 22). Mukherjee, the candidate of UPA, has enough support to ensure his victory over his rival PA Sangma, the nominee of BJP and
some of its allies. Mukherjee, 76, will take over as president from Pratibha Patil, a low-profile figure who has maintained a strictly detached stance during her five years in the job. But with the national parliament often deadlocked by disputes among rival parties and no clear winner expected in the next general election due in 2014, Mukherjee could play a key role in overseeing who forms the next government. “There is no permanent equation in India’s coalition politics and if Mukherjee becomes the president then his art of negotiation will be put to the test,” T K Tripathi, a leading political analyst and author, said. “He can be the kingmaker in this age of complex coalition politics.” Until last month, Mukherjee was at the heart of India’s Congress-led government, which has struggled with policy paralysis,

rebellious coalition partners and corruption scandals since its 2009 re-election. As finance minister, Mukherjee has taken heavy flak for a sharp decline in the economic growth rate and growing pessimism about India’s future after years of rapid development. Amid such uncertainty, Congress faces a major challenge in keeping enough coalition allies on board to push through much-needed reforms, and Continued on page 26

India-Pakistan to resume cricket ties after 5 years After a gap of five years, traditional arch-rivals India and Pakistan may play a bilateral series of cricket in India in December. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the decision after Pakistan Cricket Board had proposed for the resumption of cricketing ties between the two countries. "It was decided to resume cricketing ties with Pakistan by inviting the Pakistan cricket team for a short series in December 2012 January 2013. The modalities will be worked out shortly," the BCCI said in a statement after a meeting. The planned series is, however, subject to government approval. "The government is ready in principle to host the Pakistan team", a top BCCI official said. The series will comprise 3 ODIs and two T20Is. The last time the two nations played in a bilateral series was way back in 2007. As per the latest reports
Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi will host ODIs while Bangalore and Ahmedabad will be the venues for the two T20 matches. However, security concerns will be of prime importance. One thing is sure - whichever city the two teams play in will not matter - one can be assured of full house in the stadium. Also the series is going to be a lucrative commercial venture with television broadcasting rights and other business ventures in the offing. As per reports, the talks for resuming ties between old rivals had been taking place for the past three months. However, PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf said that the board is yet to receive any official confirmation from their Indian counterpart. “As of now we have not received any official confirmation,” he said. He, however, expressed happiness over the media reports saying Continued on page 26
