Narendra Modi, who led BJP and the NDA to a historic victory in the Lok election, was Sabha appointed Prime Minister on Tuesday, ushering in a new era of a non-Congress government with an absolute majority on its own in 30 years.

Modi told reporters after meeting President Pranab Mukherjee, "I came to call on the President. The President has given me a formal letter (of appointment as the PM) and has invited me for the oath-taking ceremony on May 26 at 6pm as we had earlier decided."

Mihir Bose is an award winning journalist and author. He writes a weekly “Big Sports Interview” for the London Evening Standard, and also writes and broadcasts on social and historical issues as well as sport for a range of outlets including the BBC, the Financial Times, the Independent, the Sunday Times and the Mail on Sunday. He also writes regularly for History Today.

He has just published a revised edition of The Lost Hero, a biography of Subhas Bose. In addition to this Mihir Bose has written 27 other books including the first history of Bollywood and the only comprehensive narrative History of Indian Cricket. Mihir was the first sports editor of the BBC and before that the chief sports news correspondent for the Daily Telegraph for 12 years where he created an innovative weekly column, Inside Sport. He also wrote on the editorial pages on such subjects as race, immigration, and other social and cultural issues. In September 2012, Loughborough University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for outstanding contribution to journalism and the promotion of equality.

1) Please tell me about your current position?

I am a freelance journalist and author with a weekly column in the London Evening Standard. I also write for the Sunday Times, Financial Times, Mail on Sunday and History Today. I also broadcast on radio and television and I am, at the moment, writing another book. This is called From Midnight to Glorious Morning? I am a Midnight’s child and the book will discuss how the India that I grew up in has changed.

2) What are your proudest achievements?

I do not wish to sound boastful but I am very proud that I was

the first BBC Sports Editor. I would also like to think that I was the first one to write and investigate the business of sport. When I started in journalism sport was not a business. I had to work hard to convince sports editors that they should find space for what I could see was becoming a very important area. Now it is so big that many writers specialise in this subject, quite unthinkable when I first started badgering sports editors. I am also very proud of my cricket writing in particular The Maidan View, the first social history of Indian cricket. I followed this with My History of Indian Cricket, which remains the only narrative history of

the game in India. It was also the first book on an Indian cricket theme to win the Cricket Society Literary Award.

I just wish I could get my rights back for this book.

3) What inspires you?

The thought that through my writing I can sometimes throw some light on an area of life that is not much known. And the hope that I may finally write and broadcast something that people will remember and say that was worth reading or listening or viewing.

4) What has been the biggest obstacle in your career?

I have always had to struggle against stereotypes. So even now I still have to convince

some people that just because I come from India it does not mean cricket is the only sport I know. And sometimes when I have broken new ground some people have suggested that this must be due to positive discrimination or political correctness. The other stereotype is that like all sports writers I am put into, what one sports writer has called, the journalism kindergarten. The feeling is I cannot possibly know anything on issues like politics, social affairs or business. In fact I began as a business journalist, I qualified as a chartered accountant, and many of my books are studies of historical figures or on business issues such as fraud.

5) Who has been the biggest influence on your career to date?

Three editors, Ian Marshall, sports editor of London Broadcasting who gave me my start in journalism, Paul Barker of New Society and John Lovesey of the Sunday Times. I am also grateful to one great publisher Tom Rosenthal.

6) What is the best aspect about your current role?

That I have the freedom to choose what I write on and can go off and follow a project without being chained to a desk job.

7) And the worst?

The need to balance my time and make sure I get the right mix of subjects.

8) What are your long term goals?

To write something , even if it is only a couple of paras, that could bear comparison with my heroes, V.S. Naipaul, James Cameron, George Orwell and David Halberstam. And to recreate Gandhi’s walk to Dandi to make salt, maybe in time for his 150th birthday in 2019.

9) If you were Prime Minister, what one aspect would you change?

I would make sure that in our educational system we teach history in such a way that people in this country realise the role of the empire in its entirety and the contribution made to Britain by people from the far corners of the globe.

10) If you were marooned on a desert island, which historical figure would you like to spend your time with and why?

Since the choice is restricted to one I would want Aneurin Bevan, not so much because he created the National Health Service but to get him to recite again his amazing speeches during the Second World War.

Indian Elections 2014: The Biggest Event in the World

Narendra Modi's historic win as the designated Prime Minister of India is undoubtedly the biggest event in the world.

The South Asia initiative of London School of Economics in association with Indian Journalists' Association (IJA) organised a debate on Elections 2014: The Biggest Event in the World, The Results on Friday May 16, 2014, after Modi won with a massive mandate of 66%.

Aditi Khanna, the newly elected President of the Indian Journalists Association welcomed the guests and it was chaired

by Dr Mukulika Banerjee, Associate Professor of Dept. of Anthropology, who has recently written a book on a comparative ethnographic study of 2009 Indian elections titled 'Why India votes?'

Banerjee expressed her c o n c e r n regarding the last two or three years, where the corporate media has set up a nexus which is quite unprecedented.

“The role of the Editor in Chief has been so diluted that getting to trust what news is throughout TV and radio is not an option,” she said.

Presenting a wish list for Mr Modi he questioned whether he could come up with a time bomb of goals that would cater to at least the major goals of the Sachar Committee in the West Bengal. He raised concerns over the maternal mortality rate in India.

Triggering the communal chord slightly, against Modi he said, “Pakistan and India own hundreds of nuclear missiles. Could India unilaterally destroy the small percentage and invite Pakistan government to do the same?”

“This is yet another terrible day for political pundits to predict results,” he began.

Comparing Modi from India's former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (BJP) he said, “The greatest concern is communism. The Vajpayee Government never had such an atmosphere despite the fact that the BJP had just written this history at the back of their record, because Vajpayee himself was a different character than Modi.”

Mukul Devichand who works for BBC Trends spoke about the power of social media and how political parties used it to their advantage in 2014 campaigns. He discussed about the fundamental changes in Indian political culture with 2014 elections.

“We are beginning to have conversations about issues on social media which aren't being addressed by the political parties. Social media is rising in India faster than any other place in the world,” said Devichand. He also described how trolling has become a big part of Indian political culture.

“Recently we spoke to the head of social media from BJP, Arvind Gupta whose defence was, that Narendra Modi is the most followed man on Twitter and Facebook in India.

The trolls can't be controlled,” he added.

Charu Shahane, senior broadcast journalist at BBC world service represented the IJA. She believes that b o t h Christians and Muslims have voted for Modi. She said that the big idea was change and economic growth that was successfully transmitted as an idea by the BJP. “Its not enough to say that people wanted a different government than the congress.

Narendra Modi and BJP’s hour of glory

Narendra Modi, India’s new prime minister, thanked the Indian people for reposing their trust in him and in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to which he belongs. The best, he said, was yet to come. This thunderous victory - predicted unerringly by exit pollster Today’s Chanakya - ensures a firm government at the centre, and, hopefully, the good governance that the electorate now expect. Great expectations may yield appropriately great and inspiring deeds. There is every indication that the changing of the guard will usher in a seminal period that will take India forward to new heights of endeavour and achievement. Mr Modi’s road to office manifested his clear strategic vision, immense organizational ability, excellent judgment in choice of campaign team and an intuitive understanding of what the country wanted. His common touch struck a rare chord with massive audiences across the land. Mr Modi’s stamina throughout a demanding campaign was remarkable on every count. His light eclipsed that of every other star in the firmament. The Modi message was robust and unyielding: development and good governance was what India needed most at this critical juncture in her history; and it was what Mr Modi promised to deliver. He has five years in which to redeem his promise, to show what he can do. He was credible and persuasive throughout

his campaign and accordingly received an overwhelming mandate from the Indian masses. The scale of his victory has astounded and confounded India and regions beyond. India’s corporate houses have welcomed his victory, while the great and good from near and afar have been quick to congratulate the new prime minister; they seek to know and understand him as India is today a power of considerable strength, with the potential to exceed this many times over going forward.

Mr Modi has struck a conciliatory and statesmanlike note, saying that the election was over, that the bruising exchanges now belonged to the past, that Indians of all persuasions would have to work together for the common good. India being the sum of its parts, Mr Modi undertook to work for every section of Indian society.

Four areas weathered the Modi wave. They were Tamil Nadu, where Chief Minister Jayalalitha’s AIDMK took 37 of the 39 seats on offer; West Bengal, where Mamata Banerjee’s ruling Trinamool Congress took 34 of the 42 seats contested, while Naveen Patnaik’s regional grouping won its fourth consecutive election victory. In Kerala the Congressled coalition defeated the Communist-led Left Front, with Ooman Chandy at the helm as State Chief Minister. The BJP failed to win a single seat.

Finally to Dr Manmohan Singh, the departing Prime Minister. He congratulated Mr Modi on his victory and wished his government every success.

He said India’s emergence as a global powerhouse was an idea whose time had come. He went on, “I owe everything to this great land of ours where I, an underprivileged child of Partition, was empowered enough to rise and occupy the high office. It is a debt that I will never be able to repay.” Senior BJP Arun Jaitley praised Dr Singh for his wisdom, scholarship and integrity. He referred to the “grace and dignity” of Dr Singh’s departure, saying, “He will remain an elder statesman.” Newspaper columnist Swaminathan Anklesaria Aiyer (a

trenchant critic of Congress) said history would be kind to Dr Singh, would credit him with the seminal economic reforms, which had raised India’s GDP to an annual 8.5 per cent for a decade, before the decline of his last two years in power. The essence of democratic politics and democratic norms is the mutual respect between rivals, especially when such respect is well merited. Dr Singh’s intellect, his understanding of economics, his understated speech and his dignified deportment made him a popular figure on the international circuit.. Manmohan Singh rendered the state valuable service; he will be judged accordingly in the fullness of time, all passion spent.

David Cameron was quick off the mark with a congratulatory call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two men discussed ways and means of drawing their countries into a closer partnership through trade and investment. “Both leaders agreed on the importance of the UK-India relationship and agreed to work together to strengthen it in the months ahead,” said a spokesman at 10 Downing Street.

Politicians of both leading parties their hopes for a deepening relationship between the two countries.

“The UK has strong ties with India and the British government looks forward to working with the new Indian government to build on this relationship and deliver security, growth and prosperity for both nations,” said British Foreign Secretary William Hague. Douglas Alexander, the Labour Shadow Foreign Secretary, congratulating Mr Modi and the BJP, said, “Our links with the world’s largest democracy will continue to be vital to the UK’s interest.”

Simon Moore of the Confederation of British Industry and Patricia Hewitt, the chair of the UKIndia Business Council welcomed the arrival of a Modi government, which they, like India’s corporate sector, believed would stimulate enterprise with a conducive investment climate. Mr Moore was forthright. “The improvement in the business environment that will follow should prompt those British businesses who have been hesitating about entering the Indian market to put aside their doubts and seize the Indian opportunity with both hands.”

Time was when the UK and US denied Mr Modi a

visitor’s visa, but things do change, and money, as always, talks. A postscript to this was the BBC’s weekend roundtable discussion, anchored by Gavin Esler, on political events at home abroad. One of the participants, Janet Daly of the Sunday Telegraph, no less, referred to the possibility of a Pakistan walk in military intervention should the Modi dispensation ill-treat India’s Muslim population. Such brazen illiteracy still, alas, hobbles sections of the Herrenvolk media in the UK about India and things Indian.

Meanwhile, the Scottish administration has said that Scotland will re-introduce post-study work visas for Indian students studying in Scottish universities for two years after taking their degrees, if Scotland were to vote for independence from the UK in the referendum to be held in September. As of now, Scotland obeys a strict UK immigration route.

At present, some 2000 or more Indian students are enrolled for university courses in the country. By 2024, it is expected that there will be 3.86 million outbound mobile higher education students globally, with India and China contributing 35 per cent of global growth during this period. Indian student applications to English universities have been declining because of immigration controls. This is a subject which Whitehall would be wise address going forward. Those turning away from England are directing their attention towards more welcoming places such as the United States and Australia, whose gain is England’s loss.

The horrible and inhuman abduction of several hundred girls and the depredation of Boko Haram, the terrorist Islamist organization allied to al Qaeda, has been wreaking havoc in Nigeria’s Muslim-majority north. Ferocious attacks on cities, towns and villages have been subjected to selective assault, the loss of lives and the destruction of property have been horrendous. As alarming has been the seeming impotence of the Nigerian government in Abuja. Prime Minister Goodluck Jonathan has brought little luck to his fraught nation. His bland assurances on tackling Boko Haram with suitable military measures have been hollow and ineffectual, which the abduction of 220 girls from a resident educational institution has starkly exposed. The murderous antiChristian Boko Haram is opposed to western-style modern education; it is committed to replacing this system by force and replacing it with medievalist

Islamism.

The world has awoken somewhat belatedly to the Boko Haram threat to the entire region, including French-speaking Cameroon, which neighbours Nigeria. The Paris summit of regional states and their principal western allies, France and Britain, have decided to coordinate measures to meet the Boko Haram jihadi challenge. But this cannot be limited to a military response. That would ignore the continuing failure of the Nigerian state to meet its basic responsibilities to its citizens. The country’s enormous oil wealth has spawned corruption on a quite staggering scale and reduced the government and governance to a gigantic parody. Unless Nigerian politics is cleansed and state institutions start functioning within the rule of law, Boko Haram will likely be joined by others of a similar criminal bent.

Tackle the extremism at root cause

It is a tragedy that as the civil war in Syria begins its fourth year there are no signs of a solution on the horizon. The situation is dire. The human costs are staggering.

Every month almost twice as many people are killed in the streets of Syria than were murdered in the Al-Qaeda attack on the World Trade Centre on 9/11/2001.

Refugees now amount to over four times the population of Brunei and a further group around the size of the population of Norway have had to flee their homes and are displaced in country. As the Telegraph uncovered only last week, Assad continues to use chemical weapons against civilians, including children.

It is also a tragedy that many radicalist jihadi groups -a number with links to Al Qaeda-are using the conflict as a breeding ground for radicalisation and terrorism, radicalising young men (and some women) from countries far away from the conflict, including the UK. It is estimated that around 11,000 foreign fighters are now in Syria, fighting with these extreme jihadi groups.

Many of these groups who claim to be fighting the Assad regime to assist the citizens of Syria are in fact fighting each other. Far from assisting the downfall of a bloody dictator, they provide propaganda opportunities for Assad to say it is he who is fighting a war against terrorist and foreign groups.

It’s a tragedy that both the Assad regime and the so called rebels continue to hinder the distribution of aid and humanitarian assistance.

A UN Security Council Resolution, which was passed unanimously, last

February has fallen on deaf ears. Despite this the UK has to date managed to distribute around £600million in aid to help those in need within Syria and to refugees on its borders.

It is a tragedy that the UK is also sending a more sinister and alarming cargo to Syria.

Britain has become the leading provider of radicalised recruits to the extremist jihadi groups from the West. The International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), based at Kings College, London, has traced young British men from cities including Bradford, Birmingham, London, and Portsmouth and the town of Crawley, who are in Syria fighting with jihadi groups who have links to Al Qaeda including Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra.

ICSR estimate that around 400 foreign fighters currently in Syria are British born, with around 2,800 in total from the West.

It is a tragedy that the international community’s failure to find solutions to end the conflict in Syria feeds the narratives of the so called disseminatorssupporters of the jihadist groups- who use social media, and websites to radicalise their followers. People like Abdul Waheed Majid (Abu Suleiman Al Britani), a family man from Crawley, who drove a truck bomb into the gates of Aleppo prison in a suicide attack and Anil Khalil Raoufi, (Abu Layth) a student at the University of Liverpool who was recently killed in fighting between rebel groups.

Community to bid final farewell to fallen patriot All the stores along the road will be closed and business owners will join a slow procession along Belgrave Road so people can pay their respects with people walking behind.

The procession will travel behind the hearse with a mourner walking in front to the Melton turn, where the hearses will continue to Loughborough for the service with full military honours.”

A group of serving officers who were friends of Flt Lt Chauhan will form the bearer party to carry his coffin from the family’s home in Cropston to the hearse. The procession will reportedly begin at the city end of Belgrave Road at 11am. This will be followed by the service in Loughborough, where an armed lining party of 24 junior ranks from RAF

Odiham in Hampshire – where Flt Lt Chauhan was based – will present arms as the coffin arrives.

Members of The Queen’s Colour Squadron, a ceremonial flight of the RAF Regiment, will carry the coffin, which will be dressed with the Union flag and a sword, together with his hat and gloves.

Mr Chauhan reportedly said, “The repatriation day when Rakesh’s body came home was very difficult, full of emotion, but we have had a lot of support from the community at large, family and friends. We are trying to set up a charity in Rakesh’s name through the funeral directors, Ginns and Gutteridge, who will hold a fund probably for the air ambulance, a service which Rakesh held dear.”

Leicester’s Belgrave Road will come to standstill on Thursday, 22 May, as thousands from the community decide to pay its respects to Flight Lieutenant Rakesh Chauhan, one of five service personnel killed in the crash in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on 26th April 2014.

Flt Lt Chauhan, an intelligence officer in the RAF, died alongside three members of the Army Air Corps – Captain Thomas Clarke, Warrant Officer Class 2 Spencer Faulkner, Corporal James Walters – Lance Corporal and Oliver Thomas, of the Intelligence Corps.

A funeral service for the 29-year-old, will then take place at L o u g h b o r o u g h Crematorium, with full military honours. A con-

dolence gathering was held at the Gujarat Arya Association Community Centre last week, which was attended by more than 1,000 people from all over the country.

Lt Chauhan’s Flt father, Kishor, 61, told a local newspaper: “The procession will start in Belgrave Road at the end of where the flyover was.

Walsall pupil enjoys school's first scholar title A tenacious teenager who is laying the groundwork for a highflying career in finance was honoured by her school earlier this month.

Henna Chhohan, aged 14, has been named a Hydesville Tower School scholar after excelling in maths. Her name will make history as the first to appear on the Walsall school’s first scholarship board.

The currently blank honours board is on display in the reception of the independent school, which opened its doors in 1952 and is housed in a series of converted Victorian properties overlooking Walsall Arboretum.

Year 9 and achieved an A grade and she will sit an extra-curricular GCSE in Human Health and Physiology in June this year.

She said: “I think it’s great that pupils are able to take exams early, if they are ready. I think it gives them an advantage when it comes to applying for a sixth form and university place because it sets you apart.”

now studying Additional Mathematics, AS Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. In addition to being taught by the school’s Head of Mathematics, she has individual lessons with Headmaster Andrew McGinnes, himself a graduate mathematician.

Henna’s attitude, achievements to date and aspirations are absolutely what this senior school stands for.”

Henna has set her sights on becoming an investment banker.

The eldest of four children, Henna cites Warren Buffett, American tycoon, investor and philanthropist, and Dr Marcus du Sautoy, award-winning mathematician and scientist, as inspirations.

City Sikhs Network opens branch in Midlands

The first regional branch of City Sikhs Network (CSN) was officially launched in the West Midlands last Thursday.

Attended by almost 200 guests, the evening event, titled Recipe for Success, was held at Radisson Blu Hotel in central Birmingham.

CSN is a forum for British Sikhs. Its mission, to create positive change within society and to inspire people to be the best they can.

Compere Raj Rainu welcomed guests, following which Jasvir Singh, CSN Chair, gave some background to the forum.

Speakers included: Labour Councillor Preet Kaur Gill (Sandwell Council); business coach Sukhi Wahiwala; broadcaster and DJ Dipps Bhamrah and Paul Uppal MP (Cons; Wolverhampton South West).

The programme also featured a Q&A session.

Among questions asked was one from Mukesh Naker of Leicester-based lobbying group British Hindu Voice, ‘why is it that the Sikh, Hindu and Jain communities are totally ignored politically?’

In response, Paul Uppal MP said: “If I’m

honest, we’re our own worst enemies.”

Referring to all British people from the Indian subcontinent, he explained: “We are disunited. As groups we very, very poorly communicate our message. We have so many so-called community leaders who are there to promote themselves, not the community issues.”

MP Uppal said that politicians of all colours talked to each other about denominations and groups of all kinds and often it was a case of hit-and-miss.

He also said how shocked he was about the low level of people’s political knowledge and how poor he finds it. “We’ve got to be more credible and professional in how we engage with politicians,” he said. “We should be strategic and smart.”

Last month CSN launched the second annual British Sikh Report, a strategic document which seeks to identify the needs and wants of the Sikh population in the UK. In the West Midlands, the Sikh population stands at 134,000 or 2.4%.

In Birmingham there are 64,600 citizens of Indian origin.

Man denies attempting to kill Sikh religious leader after Leicester axe attack

A man who swung an axe at a religious leader, breaking his arm and cutting open his face, has gone on trial for attempted murder.

Harjit Singh Toor disguised himself as a member of the Namdhari Sect, a branch of Sikhism, and smuggled the weapon into a ceremony at a gurdwara in Spinney Hills, Leicester, in August last year.

A jury at Birmingham Crown Court, where the 27-year-old is on trial, watched footage of the attack Sunday in which Toor could be seen leaping onto a low platform with the axe above his head and swinging it down at the religious leader, while a group of musicians looked on in the background.

The trial continues.

Scotland to start post study work visa for Indian students

Scotland has announced in an exclusive interview with the Times of India that it will re-introduce 2 years post study work visa for Indian students, if it gains independence from the UK, in the referendum scheduled for September 18th.

Scotland's minister for external affairs and international development Humza Yousaf told the Times of India, that ever since UK changed its immigration policy and ended its post-study work route for international students, Scotland has

seen a 51% dip in Indian students enrolling to Scottish universities. At present, over 2000 Indian students study across Scotland. By 2024, it is expected that there will be 3.85 million students globally and India along with China contributing 35% of global growth during this period. Indian students will be the second highest in travelling to enrol in foreign universities. Yousaf told TOI "India's relationship with Scotland goes back to 1870s and it's a friendship we greatly value. In fact if

the referendum sees a majority voting for Scotland's independence, Delhi will be one of the first places we will open our embassy. We have named India as our strategic priority country. The embassy will work to strengthen India's ties in promoting trade and culture".

A study by Strathclyde University published in 2009 estimated that international students contribute £188 million to universities in Scotland directly with a further £321m to the wider Scottish economy.

Shoeless toddler found on road after slipping out of Nursery A toddler at Oak Tree Day Nursery was found wandering alone in the middle of the road, after he slipped out of the nursery unnoticed.

Romeo Chudasama was picked up by a passing driver who stopped when she spotted the 23month-old walking shoeless along the road. She knocked on the doors of nearby houses before going to Oak Tree Nursery, in East Dulwich, where she said staff had not realised he had gone missing.

His mother Rekha was furious and has since taken Romeo out of the nursery. This has led to

other parents boycotting the nursery. driver Ms Bus Chudasama, 39, reportedly told a national Daily: “I was at work when I got the call to say what had happened. I couldn’t believe it. I went straight to the nursery and was told he had escaped but it was only as he was brought back that they

realised it.

“The nursery owner said she was very sorry but she said mistakes do happen. I know accidents happen. If my son had hurt himself while at nursery I would have dealt with it. He is a very active child and very outgoing, and he loves jumping around. But I can’t forgive them for letting a child go for a walk in the road.

Nobody knows how long he was alone for. Luckily the road wasn’t busy at the time but anything could have happened to him.

Immigrants must respect the British 'way of life', says Sajid Javid The recently appointed first Asian Secretary of State and Culture minister Sajid Javid, pictured, has spoken out about immigrants coming to the UK and have said that they must learn English and "respect our way of life".

The new Culture Secretary has criticised those migrants who have lived here for years but still cannot speak the language.

In an interview with a national daily, Sajid Javid reportedly said that voters have real fears over “excessive” immigration and are justified in wanting Britain to have more control over its borders.

Mr Javid defended Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party, against charges of racism but insists that only the Conservatives can deliver the reforms to European Union laws

needed to cut immigration.

“People want Britain to have more control over its borders, and I think they are right,” Mr Javid, who is the son of Pakistani immigrants, said.

Mr Javid's tough stance on immigration will no doubt provoke debate on controls to migration in a crucial week of elections.

On Thursday, voters will go to the polls across the UK to elect MEPs for the European Parliament.

Elections are also being held in 161 English council areas. Immigration is a key area in the current campaign and will be central to all parties’ manifestos in the run up to the general election.

In his interview, Mr Javid suggested that some immigrants who are already well-established in the UK also need to take greater responsibility for integrating with the rest of society.

“I know people myself, I have met people who have been in Britain for over 50 years and they still can’t speak English,” he reportedly said. “I think it’s perfectly reasonable for British people to say, look, if you’re going to settle in Britain and make it your home, you should learn the language of the country and you should respect its laws and its culture.”

Croydon Fraudster Neelam Desai jailed for 30 months Neelam Desai, a travel agent from Selhurst, Croydon, has been jailed for 30 months for a series of frauds totalling more than £230,000, the Croydon Advertiser has reported.

The 34-year-old, former baggage handler at Gatwick Airport, ran a business selling discount

flights and holidays from her home in Beulah Grove, Selhurst, in late 2009 and early 2010.

However, the deals which were advertised were unrealistically cheap leading to her business quickly falling apart. Her lies were finally unravelled on Monday 19 May when she appeared at Croydon

Crown Court to be sentenced.

Judge Stephen Waller sentenced Desai to a total of 30 months.

A boy not more than seven, Dhyan is from Finton House School in London. Recently he launched a game for iPhone and iPad devices.

The game called Greedy Ladder game is in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital charity.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals with the broadest range of dedicated, children’s healthcare specialists under one roof in the UK. The hospital’s pioneering research and treatment gives hope to children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often lifethreatening conditions, from across the country and abroad. The charity needs to raise £50 million a year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, provide vital up-to-date equipment and fund

research into better treatments for the children.

Now coming back to the game, the Greedy Ladder is a racing game. You can race to the top of a ladder in 6 cities from London to New York. The idea is to get to the top as fast as you can and be number one on the ladder board.

You have to maintain a good diet balance to race fast. So eat well, avoid

sweets and candy and most important don’t get hit by objects like shoes and buses!

Dhyan designed the game whilst attending a hackathon with his father in September 2013. At the end of hack he had drawn the logo and designed all the game play. Since then he has been working with a specialist team of developers in Poland to bring the game to life. He also recorded all the sound and has designed a merchandise range.

The game can be downloaded for free from the App Store where you can race the London ladder for free. The purchase of other cities like Agra, Hong Kong, Paris, or Tokyo will lead to profits going to charity.

Deveshi Priya Abott, singer

The second one in our list of child prodigies today is nine-year old Deveshi Priya Abott.

Devishi recently won a gold medal and a trophy for her performance at the Croydon Music Festival in the under 10 category. She started learning music at the age of seven and a half but was always fascinated by music from a much earlier age. “She used to play the harmonium by herself at the age of three,” said Deveshi’s proud father.

At the Croydon Music Festival, Devishi performed a bhajan, competing with close to hundred students and still managed to win the prize. Her certificate says that there was a particular ‘taal’ in the bhajan that she sang extremely well and very professionally. Devishi has only been learning music from her teachers Mrs. Sapna Das and Mrs Sobha Das for the past one year.

Independence Day – NaMo Style

16th of May 2014 will go down in history when India was given a second chance to secure its independence.

Our Shri Narendrabhai Modi transcended the binds of caste, creed, religion, language and ethnicity to take the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to its most profound election victory ever. The landslide victory decimated the dynastic socialist Gandhi Congress and the so called ‘Third’ front.

The media was left breathless as the results started to come in. TV anchors that had for more than a decade shown total bias against PM Modi ji were left dumbfounded. As the minutes ticked by you could see the shock on their faces – the sudden realisation that they had got it all wrong and backed the wrong horse in Rahul Gandhi and Congress. In a desperate attempt to salvage some credibility, TV/Media anchors changed their tune to pro-Modi. In one instance we even had mithai being shared by TV anchors and their guests. In the end, those who had for years fed the masses untruths about PM Modiji were left having to eat their own words. It truly was awe inspiring to see these parasites grovelling in full public view.

PM Modiji has shown that regardless of the opposition, the Lion of Gujarat can handle it all. He is more than capable of sorting India out. However for us the UK we must take stock of who our friends are, and those who wish us harm and show disrespect. It is now time for the Modi tsunami to hit our shores and for us to take up that challenge closer to home.

Let me remind you also how the then Labour government in 2002 instigated a diplomatic ban on Gujarat – even though there was no shred of evidence implicating Chief Minister Modi. It was the Congress Government in India under Manmohan Singh that stayed silent whilst one of its democratically elected CMs was hounded by foreign powers.

How disgraceful knowing that for political gain Congress stooped to the gutter instead of protecting CM Modi. On that day the integrity of the Congress Government died totally. They had sold their souls and the country to the imperial masters for whom they do the bidding.

I must therefore congratulate and commend David Cameron who within months of getting into power lifted the stupid illegal diplomatic ban. He travelled to India thrice showing that the future belongs to India and that the UK wants to be part of that bright vision. On his last visit he even stated live on CNNIBN that he was very happy to work with Narendrabhai Modi. David Cameron therefore became the first western leader

to openly nail his colours to the mast. I can now also tell you that our Prime Minister was one of the first to send his congratulations to PM Modiji. In fact from the information I have, PM Modi ji took only one call on that day – and that was from David Cameron.

I am disgusted with Ed Miliband and the Labour Party. Did you know that the 1st tweet made by Ed Miliband on the Indian elections was at 12:02 pm - 18 May 2014. By this time I had already reminded him at least three times that he had failed to tweet his message of congratulations to PM Modiji.

I then checked to see if this was a pattern within the Labour MPs – and guess what, yes it was. It seems Labour MPs were either all ignorant of the biggest election taking place in the world, or they had been instructed not to comment on it. Even the so called ‘Labour Friends of India’ had not posted a message of congratulations to PM Modiji.

I don’t know about all of you, but I take that as the highest form of disrespect to PM Modiji, to Indian democracy, to the Indian people and to all Indians in the UK. Ed Miliband wants to be the Prime Minister of UK yet on the world stage he failed monumentally in his duty to do the right thing. I have been informed by a number of people that the Labour Party wanted to secure the Muslim vote in the elections. In effect it seems it was easier to ignore Hindus, Sikhs and Jains as long as the Muslim vote was kept happy. How true and widespread this might be – only Ed Miliband knows. However the evidence suggests that the Labour Party has shown a distinct lack of judgement when it came to PM Modiji and the Hindu community in the UK. I wish to leave you all with a parting thought. Huge expectations exist both in India and overseas with regard to PM Modiji and what he can do for India. I would just say to everyone, 60 years of bankrupt corrupt governance will take time to sort out. Let us all support PM Modiji in whatever way we can. Let us understand that time and space will be required to restructure Bharat so that it is fit for the 21st Century. In my view PM Modiji will require at least two clear terms to turn the Indian juggernaut around, but a glimpse of what we can expect in the future will become a reality within months. The next few years will see breath taking changes and opportunities in India. It is time Bharat and its people took their rightful place on the world stage. India has finally secured its Independence.

I asked her father what she would like to do going forward, now that she has such a keen interest in music. “I

She is planning to learn more and take part in the Croydon Ratha Yatra festival where she would again be performing,” said her father.

When PM David Cameron came to power in May 2010, he made a series of pledges to cut net migration down to fewer than 100,000. As we edge closer to the general election in May 2015, it seems Mr Cameron has cooled on his party's pledges by seemingly avoiding the question of whether he was sticking to his commitment, on a television interview.

Perhaps, this could be due to the fact that over the last four years, he has

noticed the contributions immigrants, and in particular Asians, have made to the British society, and has potentially changed his stance. Interviewed on Sky News’ Murnaghan programme, Mr Cameron declined five times specifically to say that he wanted to achieve this by 2015, preferring to insist that the Conservatives were “working towards” the target. He said: “We are doing everything we can to deliver on it and we should continue to do that.” Asked again if the

figure was still a target for the general election, Mr Cameron said: “I want to see net migration down to the tens of thousands not only because it is right for the British economy because we should be training our own people for these jobs. But also if you look back to the 1980s when net migration was in the tens of thousands, we were an open economy then. But do you know what, immigration wasn’t a big political issue because it was properly under control and that’s what I want to achieve again.”

Indian diaspora celebrate Modi’s victory

The Indian diaspora in Britain rejoiced the stupendous success of Shri Narendra Modi in a rally on Friday 16 May, followed by a huge celebration on 17th at Sattavis Patidar Centre, Wembley, organised by Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar in association with Sattavis Patidar Gaam Samaj, BJP supporter Rashmiben Patel and young Overseas BJP member Nachiket Joshi. For the first time Britain witnessed such a large scale celebration outside India for Indian elections or such political occasions.

Nearly a thousand people gathered at the beautiful SPC at Forty avenue, including MPs, Peers, local Councillors, and the Mayor of Harrow.

The programme started with the national anthems of Britain and India, followed by moving speeches by the present dignitaries.

Leicester East, expressed his happiness over the grand victory of Modi and gave assurance to fight against the ban on the import of Gujarat’s famous mangoes.

Shock and Awe at the Stunning Victory of Modi and BJP After 30 years, India has elected a single majority government with great potential for economic development and good governance. The behaviour of Narendra Modi – his first action was to visit his mother and receive her blessings and his inspiring speeches at Vadodara, Delhi and Varanasi - has all the ingredients of his resolve to have an all-inclusive approach for his government.

He entered the Central Hall of the Lok Sabha after bowing down at the steps and described the place as 'Pavitra Bhumi'. His address was full of sincerity, commitment and his message was as it has been in Gujarat for the last almost 13 year period as Chief Minister. He represents all people, all 1250 billion Indians.

India's stock market is booming. FDI is flowing to India in leaps and bounds. The Indian rupee is getting stronger. The top credit rating agency 'Moody' has already given AAA to India. The development process in India is full of challenges and the new Prime Minister – elect is fully aware of all the hurdles.

His Cabinet formation process is in full swing, as I wrote in my column a few weeks ago. He is likely to induct people from all quarters who possess proven skills. I am also happy that my optimism about the clear majority of BJP has been so brilliantly fulfilled.

Mr Gopal Gandhi, a grandson of the Mahatma and a totally upright man, has written an open letter to Mr Narendra Modi. Mr Gandhi has put forward his thoughts and advice in a very constructive manner without any fear or favour. Knowing Mr Modi, I'm sure such message, though not necessarily needed, will be listened to

by Mr Modi in all its earnest.

Paranoia of certain Western commentators 'Western' doesn't mean exclusively 'European' or 'American'. It includes persons of Indian origin with excellent education and good academic positions but their tune reminds one very often about the piper remembering his paymasters.

There is a full report elsewhere in your Asian Voice of an event, organized at LSC titled 'Elections 2014: The Biggest Event in the World'. I attended with all the hopes of listening to an impartial and objective analysis or at least an overview of the election results. I was not very inspired.

The chair person, though talking about 'no political rhetoric', looked slightly hypocritical.

The first speaker, Professor Talking about Mr Modi, Mukehbhai Patel expressed his hopes for a better future of India under his rule. He also thanked Lexicon Construction as well as members of Sattavis Patidar community for the grand building of Sattavis

Pranab Bardhan, began his speech with 'I am allergic to Mr Modi'. For a moment, I thought he was half joking, but no, he was honest to the core. His comments about communalism were totally provocative and untimely. His suggestion about the 'unilateral destruction of a small percentage of nuclear arsenal by India' was ludicrous and most people laughed at it.

However, the most inappropriate comments and bombastic statements came from Mr James Astill of the Economist. He was talking about 'bloodshed and Modi's hands in it'. His accusation about Amit Shah, playing the communal card in Uttar Pradesh and about the Economist's earlier, unwarranted claim of conditional support to Mr Modi, was totally inappropriate to the impartiality and objectivity of such a reputable journal.

Whatever such 'pundits' say, the BBC report of a substantial number of Muslims and Christians voting for BJP is more factual and relevant. Whatever the so-called 'experts' or the Economist perhaps far beyond its weight proclaim, 550 million Indians have exercised their right and given a thumping majority to the BJP and NDA as well as a total rejection of the divisive Politics of the Congress Bahujan Samajwadi, NCP and the likes.

The advent of the new government and the rapid economic progress in India, which is more than possible, need not surprise people in the know. The late Professor Angus Meddison, a British economic historian, calculated that in 1820, before the Industrial Revolution had began in Britain, China and India were by far the two largest economies in the world. Though if you go back to 1500 A.D., India's was larger than China's. The possibilities are that very soon, India will acquire the rate of growth much higher than the present 4.4% and the trajectory has potential for more and more momentum.

At the 14th Asian Film Festival in London Humaima Malik, winner of the Best Actress award for her performance in Bol, wore a Sania Maskatiya creation.

Sania Maskatiya also created a limited edition capsule collection in celebration of her Flagship store turning one on February 2012. I love the fact that Sania’s brother, Umair Tabani, is her head of business development. Lost opportunity

Editors everywhere must be hugging their sides with delight having found what they assume is a most appropriate word "Modification" - to define the anticipated impact of India's dynamic new prime minister Narendra Modi. How clever is "Modification"? Unfortunately not clever at all. The word means "toning down" or "making slight changes". I am sure Mr Modi aims to do a great deal more than that.

By the way, Mr Modi not only has to think big, he must think bigger than he's ever done before if he is to inspire the entire subcontinent and put it on the path to prosperity for all its citizens.

India's election ended in a landslide victory for the BJP, thanks solely to campaign by Mr. Narendra Modi with help of RSS and VHP. In 1947, Mahatma Gandhi, drove the British out of India; Sardar Patel merged 555 states into single nation. In 2014, Modiji drove Nehru/Gandhi dynasty who ruled for more than 60 years.

Modiji has an uphill task and will need a long time to remove corruption, resolve Kashmir-separatist problem, subdue Naxals and Maoists, implement uniform civil law, abrogate article 370 etc.

Another burden to deal will be Prevaling Hinduphobia among minorities.

Fortunately, foreign nations have realised Modiji's sterling quality and have become friendlier. Only sustained one party majority for many terms can make India fly like paramhamsa.

Amidst immense excitement, entertainment and slurring, India's 16th election is over leaving a huge impact on millions of people in India and around the world.

After anxious, nervous waiting, it must be great news for vast supporters of Modi that he has emerged as a historic winner.

Modi has a huge challenge ahead and he is ready to take it up confidently. He has surprised and silenced many of his opponents and sceptics by his stunning victory.

Let us hope that our great hero can rid us from an evil of corruption which has crippled India and establish righteousness in every sector of our motherland, we love so dearly.

The recent victory of BJP made me wonder about events in my adopted country.

It has been governed by 5 British Prime Ministers. Margaret Thatcher (11 years); John Major (6 years); Tony Blair (9 years); Gordon Brown (2 years) and David Cameroon (4 years). This is a total of 32 years.

The decade started by privatisation of many publicly owned utility, transportation and other monopoly enterprises to promote competition in the belief that it would result in better quality services at lower costs. In the second decade, liberalisation was followed by further deregulation. One example is deregulation of financial services such as banking, insurance, mortgages, loans and pensions. In the last decades, deregulation was followed by re-regulation and stricter supervision by public sector watchdogs including the financial sector.

BJP should plan 30 years ahead and take the losing parties in confidence in a 30-year plan. Five year plans are no longer relevant. That would ensure that egos, rivalries and political squabbling over ideologies do not make any political party not see the wood for the tree.

False allegations

I write as Chairman of ILG to counteract the allegations made by Navin Shah.

I would like to remind all the residents of Kenton East and Asian Voice readers that Independent Labour Group is a party registered by the electoral commission and not a Bogus party as alleged

It does not befit an Assembly member to make allegations of this type especially as the trouble started when my Marlborough Ward Member colleague was put forward to wrest the leadership away from Thaya Idiakkadar who happened to have been in office for only 5 months a type of challenge that had never occurred before.

I am appalled to hear the above maligned accusations of former colleagues who were Labour Party foot soldiers for many lifetimes/ members of labour party for 93 years in total and all of them people of very high integrity and principals, 4 people were former mayors, one was group chairman. It takes a lot of bravery, strength of spirit and sheer guts to take a stand when people of Harrow were suffering, mainly due to Con-Dem Cuts by the National Government.

The steps taken by myself and the other councillors were taken with deep soul searching and when there was no other option, despite our agreement of a mediation it was rejected by 2 votes perhaps even manipulated by people with self interest.

Democracy in action

The world's largest democracy concluded a peaceful and open election in which 550 million voters participated. This democratic process resulted in a resounding mandate for the BJP and its allies under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

Ed Miliband, as leader of the official opposition in the UK Parliament and laying claim to being a statesman with aspirations to be our PM, would, I am sure, understand the impact of this.

I am therefore disappointed that after more than 48 hours since the declaration of the will of the Indian people, he has remained silent both in congratulating the citizens of India for the peaceful and open election process and also in neglecting to communicate a personal message as to express good wishes and prospects for India-UK relations to India PM Narendra Modi.

Talking to fellow British Indians Hindu and non-Hindu - there is an almost unanimous wave of endorsement of Mr Modi. Miliband's lack of response is an insult to all who respect democracy everywhere and more specifically to Indians and Hindus whose pride, culture and above all, the democratic will you have chosen to dismiss.

A new era for India

Heartfelt congratulations to Shri Narendra Modi, his advisors and the BJP Party for the most outstanding victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

Since independence in 1947, India has been holding national election on a regular basis as prescribed in the constitution. This is the first time the Indian election has proved itself to be a truly democratic process.

Democracy as a political system is an invention of man and was invented to eliminate feudalism replacing it with a system that would ensure the ruling of a nation by a person with right knowledge, experience and ability. Shri Modi has earned that distinction through honest and sincere dedication, commitment and hard work.

When the election was over, addressing the nation Shri Modi said, “Let us place people over politics, hope over despair, healing over hurting, inclusion over exclusion and development over division. This is the right time to look ahead. It is a time to connect with each other.”

This is the only way forward. If there is a person in the whole of India who means what he says it is Shri Modi. It is now time to start work, the work that would usher in a new culture of Indian politics and a new era for India.

Landslide victory

Shri Modi and BJP are one of many who deserve kudos for their landslide victory in spite of the mud throwing and personal attack by all opposition parties and also from some unsatisfied saints and gurus and other religious leaders.

Voters themselves proved that they were ready for real democracy even though many of them are uneducated and went out to vote.

Kudos is also well deserved for the Election Commission of India for holding a massive election supervised by 8 millions committed officials resulted in a peaceful, fair and an orderly fashion 2014 general election.

Many western nations were sceptical of Modi's landslide victory but now are wagging their tails for their self interest and willing to grant him visa which they refused earlier.

Amir Khan to build orphanage The British Pakistani boxing champion Amir Khan has recently been featured on The Sunday Times Rich List, and rumoured to have earned more than a million pounds in Las Vegas.

Now he is again all over the news, not for hitting another jackpot, but for spending £100,000 to build a new orphanage in Pakistan.

The project is the first of a new charitable foundation backed by the 28year-old boxer, which aims to raise funds for a variety of projects in Pakistan, as well as other parts of the world. Khan told the Bolton News that the Amir Khan Foundation would be “low cost” and would ensure that all donations

are given to worthwhile causes after it is launched on 14 June.

Riz Malik, who is working with Amir on the venture, reportedly said they were close to setting up a project in the

Home office probe over claims of fraud

In a government probe over claims that migrants were able to buy qualifications supporting their asylum bids have triggered a Home Office search of a language school in Upton Park, East London.

Immigration and enforcement teams have attended the Learn Pass Succeed (LPS) school in Upton Park, east London, following a sting by the Daily Mail newspaper.

Inside, staff examined potential evidence after the Home Office launched the investigation into claims that migrants who speak no English are able to buy documents showing that they have passed a supposedly “secure” language test. The Daily Mail reported that secret filming at one examination centre in London showed the certificates which are required by anyone wanting to remain in the UK permanently or to apply for British citizenship – were being sold for £500.

Error as Cover Photo from Brent is on Guidebook for Hounslow A rough guidebook to Hounslow has turned out to be very rough indeed after an error made by Hounslow Council shows it features a photo taken in Neasden, Brent as its cover photo.

The book was published in an effort to highlight the best of Hounslow in a bid to attract investors and tourists to the borough. Produced at a cost of £25,590 for 20,000 copies, it includes a list of interesting facts about the area with information ranging from transport links to listed buildings.

The cover photo features a colourful shot of Diwali and New Year celebrations in which ample

supplies of sweets and drinks are being offered up to God at a Hindu temple.

However, the temple in question is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, in Neasden, Brent, well away from Hounslow’s ‘borders’.

The blunder was pointed out by Nehal Patel, who reportedly said she regularly visited the Neasden temple and felt the use of the photo, ‘providing incorrect informa-

tion to whoever sees the guide’.

A council spokeswoman said: “The front cover of the Rough Guide is an image taken at the Neasden Temple in Brent and was used in error due to an oversight in the production process; which has since been tightened.

Whilst we fully accept that an image of Hounslow would have been more appropriate, the image does reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the borough. The Rough Guide is likely to be updated later this year but we will continue to use the available copies of this edition to promote the borough.”

Last November, KKR invested $200 million acquiring a 37.98 per cent stake in Hyderabad-based Gland Pharma, which develops and manufactures generic injections primarily for the US, as also for India and other semi-regulated markets. It also produces pharmaceutical ingredients.

Further, the Cabinet cleared another proposal under which KKR will acquire 24.9 per cent stake in Gland Celcus Bio Chemicals. Gland Celsus is likely to increase its stake in Gland Pharma to 30.24 per cent.

India’s milk revolution

French firm Danone has added traction to India’s milk revolution, a sign that the country is attracting the attention of global dairy companies.

Groupe Danone has introduced pouched milk packs under the Danone Dynamix brand in Pune. “At this moment, we have launched our pouch milk in Pune. We are trying to the market. Tata Steel’s quantum jump

Tata Steel has posted a largerthan-expected profit for the fourth quarter fiscal ending march 31. This was achieved on the back of an all-round improvement in performance across geographies, including Europe, the company’s foremost overseas market. The fourth quarter profit of Rs 1,036 crore compares very favourable with the previous quarter (ending December 31, 2013), which was Rs 503 crore. Mango ban opens door for Pakistan?

The EU ban on India's Alphonso mangoes, due to fruit fly may open a door for Pakistan to boost exports, it has been claimed.

Two men have been convicted of the horrific murder of a 69-yearold Sikh pensioner Harjit Chaggar, pictured, whose body was found in the basement of a food store in Kent, 12 days after she went missing. She lived in the Chatam area of Kent for forty years and disappeared whilst out shopping in early September.

Medical experts concluded that she had been beaten around the head and neck and had bled for up to six hours before her death.

Shop workers Mohammed Islam, 28, and 38-year-old Murshed Miah were convicted of her murder at Canterbury Crown court. The pair were also found guilty of preventing Mrs Chaggar's lawful burial or cremation along with their boss Abdul

Hannan, 44, and another shop worker, 27-year-old Rasad Miah.

All four defendants, who have denied the charges against them, were remanded in custody and was due to be sentenced on Tuesday, May 20. A handbag and some jewellery belonging to Ms Chaggar has never been found. As the guilty verdicts were read out, the defendants shook their heads with one continuing to protest their innocence from the dock.

The number of billionaires living in the UK has increased to 104 with a combined wealth of £518.9bn, up by 13% from the previous year. According to The Sunday Times Rich List published by The Sunday Times on 18 May 2014, the world's rich have never been richer, with more and more billionaires and multi-millionaires now living in Britain including women and more than 60 British Asians.

Deals are like buses, when they come they come all at once

We exchanged on a property in fashionable Cornwall Gdns for a ground floor, share of freehold flat, consisting of 710 sq. ft. The price paid was £900,000 which equates to £1,267 per sq. ft., on the surface this looks expensive, however on closer inspection the prices going in this location are around £1,750 per sq. ft. conservatively.

Furthermore the last part of this address indicates it may be facing a garden which in this case it is. The property itself is an ill constructed one bedroom flat, with a plaster board placed in the middle of the bay windows to turn it into a one bedroom. At 710 sq. ft. it is actually a large one bedroom flat, I have seen two bedrooms at 500 sq. ft.

The ceiling height on the flat is very impressive, this is one thing you cannot appreciate without a visit. The square footage is only two dimensional and to get a fair understanding perhaps the cubic footage should be given, in other words the volume of the flat. This would then take into account the height of the property and give a fairer indication.

F rom first glance it was obvio us the wall had to be tak en out and the flat tu rn ed back in to a st udio, this way you woul d have one roo m t o incorporate t he large bay win d ows. Due to the ce ilin g height yo u can no w pu t in anot her floo r in t he same room.

Th is gives you a mezzan ine leve l. This will also increase th e sq uare f ootage o f livable space in the pro perty.

It is possible to add in another 250 sq. ft. at least, thereby increasing the end value potentially by £437,500. This way it works in our favour, the square footage is based on two dimensions.

Unfortunately our strategy has been mostly a hit and run one; we don’t like to get our hands dirty. Hence after saying all of this, we went for the kill. Instant gratification as opposed to delayed gratification.

We have been working on this deal for three months due to the owner being abroad, and the time taken for the lawyer to get the authorisation. I wasn't worried as the price was only increasing during this period. As soon as we exchanged the property was put back on the market in a discreet way to attract a developer. There was enough margin there to attract someone to come and purchase. The price quoted was £1.2m, within a few days we had two offers at £1m, however we said this won’t cut the deal, we need at least £1.05m. A Friday is a good day to go back and say this as then the deal would start itching the prospective buyer over the whole weekend. So come Monday we had a revised offer of £1.05m which we are proceeding with.

£1m and the other was purchased for £700k and resold for £910k.

On the first we made £150k from £85k and on the second £210k from £70k.

These came with risks, they rarely come on the plate. The end result perhaps looks very attractive and lucrative, but both had issues and required close work with the lawyers to ensure the onward sale happened smoothly.

Whilst we were in the process of selling the £850k deal the freeholder decided to nail a notice up on the front door from her lawyer announcing she had forfeited the lease due to a number of issues. This then put us under obligation to inform the oncoming purchaser as well as putting our purchase under possible jeopardy.

We managed to iron the creases out from the deal and get it through. I was actually glad to get rid of this one as the freeholder seemed to have a lot of time on her hands, and also lived in the same block, it smelt like trouble ahead.

With the other one we are looking to do a resale, this time after completion. It’s a pub in Kensington which we purchased for £1.25m, got planning for and is currently being resold - hopefully for £2m. We had some interest from other parties at slightly higher prices, but this is irrelevant as they couldn’t put their money down and do the deal. There was a lot of unnecessary talk and no walk going on. One of the buyer links had four people in it, and it was apparent they didn't really have a clue about the issues involved in the purchase, from the VAT to the stamp duty, yet they posed themselves as agents.

Another party didn't turn up at the premises twice! It’s amazing how many people waffle and fall down on the basics.

I write to you from Delhi, just after the election victory. So do we in Britain profit from what looks like a gallaping Indian stock market?

What if you believe small businesses will now flourish, infrastructure building will increase and the Rupee will rise?

There are a number of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) which unlike conventional funds, have lower charges because they are like index trackers and don’t have fat manager fees (the fees and the managers are fat).

Here are some of the ones to investigate – your online or traditional UK broker can buy then for you.

You won’t need an Indian bank account or brokerage account.

‘Market Vectors India Small-Cap Index (ETF).

This fund tracks 88 small listed Indian companies. It is up 30% so far this year. Because the companies are small and not multinationals you get more exposure to the domestic economy.

Around $256m worth of investments are tracking this index. But because it is following smaller companies, it is volatile. So beware. The charges are only 0.85% annually.

INXX tracks 30 Indian infrastructure companies if you want to focus on a sector. According to the World Economic Forum, India’s infrastructure is poorer than that of Cambodia. If as expected there will be a huge focus under Modi-nomics on infrastructure to help build the nation and the economy, then this fund should continue the rally which has seen it up 25% already in the past month.

Finally what also of the Rupee – surely it too should rally now? Well the fund which tracks the Rupee against the dollar, ICN, is up 8% this year which means it is one of the best currency tracking funds in the world. With a strong central government, the demand for Rupees should continue as foreign investors look for Indian investments.

So there you have it, three funds to tap into Modinomics. But what is Modi-nomics. Well, right-wing political economics has two flavours. There is the Reagan/Thatcher type of the free-economy, little regulations, supply-side monetary policy (meaning making doing business easier and low interest rates) and then there is the more protectionist policies associated with right-wing politics. Modi-nomics will not be of the purely free markets because Indian national interests would not allow it. It does not sit with BJP politics or principles and is somewhat elitist to reduce labour regulations for instance.

It will be glad to see inward investment, but protect the labour force. Probably it will be closer to a Democract, than a Republican, a Liberal Democrat than a Tory or a Labour view. It will be pragmatic, not ideological, because Gujarat has shown itself to be practical in achieving its goals, not ideological.

The new Immigration Bill received Royal Assent on 14th May 2014 and is now officially the new Immigration Act. The main, though not the only, changes are: • Requiring landlords to check the immigration status of tenants. Failure to do so will result in a £3000 fine per person.

• Prohibiting banks from opening current accounts by requiring them to check against a database.

• New powers to check driving licence applicants • Require temporary migrants to make a contribution to the NHS • Those who need but do not have leave will be removed without rights of appeal • Increased powers of search are increased to allow searches of third parties not connected to the detained person • Power to make requirements for biometrics to be

taken when applying for British citizenship • A severe reduction of rights of appeal to allow rights of appeal only when an asylum, human rights or EU application is made.

• Tribunals will not be able to consider new matters not previously raised in human rights cases unless the Secretary of State gives her permission. There will be a new procedure to manage this process • Many rights of appeal (including some human rights appeals) will take place from abroad • In human rights appeals, the “public interest” as defined by the Act will need to be considered • Extension of the notice period to 28 days (extended to 70 days in some cases) for couples giving notice of marriage and require registration official to refer to the Home Office all marriages where at least one party is a nonEU national without settled status • Reduction in rights to apply for bail.

The Rupee strengthened and bonds rallied as vote counting showed the main opposition alliance will form majority government. Proponents see Modi who has overseen annual economic growth of 10 per cent, as a leader who can speed up infrastructure projects and strengthen the Indian Economy. Further Indian economic growth is will likely lead to a stronger rupee in the medium term.

Wednesday was a big day for the pound. The UK unemployment rate came in at 6.8%, so it is continuing to fall with unemployment at 6.9% the previous quarter which is the lowest level in five years. The number of people in employment hit a new record high with 30.43 million people now in work We also had Mark Carney's quarterly inflation report. His tone was to stress that the economy is improving, however, that there is still some way to go and they are still in the early stages of the recovery. Some important things to note from the speech were that the Bank of England has increased its Economic growth forecast for next year from 2.7% to 2.9% and for this

year unchanged at 3.4%.

Unemployment remains significantly above the banks current estimate for equilibrium rate. The closest Carney came to indicating an interest rate rise was by saying we have edged close to the point when the bank rate would gradually need to rise.

The US showed signs of recovery at the end of last week with the house-building sector coming back to life after a few quiet months, with the number of housing starts jumping 13.2% in April. Housing starts (which count when a builder begins constructing a new site) rose to

an annual pace of 1.07 million, the highest level since November 2013. Also, permits to build new homes jumped 8%, to an annual rate of 1.08 million, suggesting house building will be strong for the coming months.

The US inflation rate also improved at its fastest rate since last July. The consumer prices index rose by 2.0% on an annual basis in April, with prices up by 0.3% month-on-month. Figures were also released showing that Russian holdings of US treasuries fell by 20% in March. This may be behind much of the USD weakness with Russia dropping their US assets, hence a damp-

ening demand for dollar.

European car sales rose at their slowest rate in five months, adding to concerns over the economic recovery. Reports showed new car registrations across the EU rose by 4.6%, year-on-year in April, but it is still the third lowest figure for an April since 2003.

Weaker-than-expected economic growth adds to pressure on the European Central Bank to loosen monetary policy further to reduce the risks of deflation in a barely growing economy.

On Thursday Euro-zone CPI figures hit 0.7% targets that were forecast, but the good news was counter-acted by below forecast GDP figures of 0.9%.

Following the announcement from the European Central Bank Vice President stated that policy makers are prepared to add further monetary stimulus if needed, the euro fell to the lowest level in 11 weeks versus the dollar and yen. Economists are urging the ECB to take fresh action at next month's meeting, after the latest GDP data showed Europe's recovery remained week. As a result weaker EUR is forecast.

Prince Harry honours troops killed in Italy battle

London: Prince Harry honoured the thousands of British and Commonwealth troops fought and died at Monte Cassino in a desperate campaign to wrest control of the stronghold from the Germans by placing wreaths at the Polish military cemetery.

The Prince was shown where British, New Zealand, Indian and American soldiers advanced from the valley below, all the time under the withering fire of Spandau machineguns, mortars and artillery.

“It really dominates the valley,” the Prince said, as he looked down over Cassino town, which was smashed to rubble in the fighting, as well as the railway station, where a battle cost the New Zealanders particularly dearly.

He was in Italy to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the monastery finally being taken by Polish troops on May 18, 1944, and began the day by laying a wreath at

War Cemetery to honour the New Zealand forces who played a key role in the bloody campaign, suffering 1,400 casualties.

The Prince, wearing a Household Cavalry dress uniform, performed his first Maori “hongi” greeting, pressing noses with Sir Jerry Mateparae, New Zealand’s Governor-General and himself a Maori.

Maori soldiers, sailors and airmen performed a traditional “karanga” ceremony, requesting permission to enter the sacred land of the cemetery.

“We suffered 78 casualties out of a battalion of 200 men,” he said. “I was one of the few survivors. The boats were hit by machinegun fire and torn by underwater barbed wire. We were loaded down with packs and ammo so a lot of men drowned.”

Wounded three times during the Italy campaign, he said: “It was horrible. We were terrified. We were being hit by Spandau machineguns which could fire 1,000 rounds a minute.”

London: The house prices have jumped by nearly £10,000 between April and May, the biggest month-on-month increase ever recorded. Figures from Rightmove, the property website, showed house prices jumped by nine per cent over the past year, pushing up the value of an average home to record levels. The news came as the Bank of England said that people could be stopped taking out mortgages worth many times their salary to buy new homes to cool the market.

London beat New York to become the best city in the world

London: PwC’s sixth annual index of 30 major cities internationally has picked London as number one spot as a centre for business, finance and culture in Cities of Opportunity. This means that London has edged ahead of New York since last year, with Singapore coming in third.

Retirees should try to earn at least £15,000 pension

London: According to an industry report, those planning their retirement should try and plan for an income of at least £15,000 a year so that they can feel comfortable and financially secure. The report found that wellbeing jumps significantly once retirees earn between £15,000 and £20,000 a year, including their state pension. Many people earning less than that find it difficult to afford energy bills and groceries, said the report.

Woman, lover jailed for killing child

Oslo: A Norwegian woman Yasmin Chaudhry and her British lover Ammaz Omer Qureshi were sentenced to eight and nine years in jail for killing the woman’s 21month-old daughter while video-chatting online. The child died after her mother plunged her head in a bucket of water following the webcam instructions of Ammaz Qureshi, who was in London at the time. The Oslo court charged the couple with manslaughter, since it considered that they did not take the infant’s life deliberately.

London: One of Britain’s leading employment experts said that elderly people are not getting necessary help from nursing homes and home care staff.

Baroness Kingsmill said that she had never seen so many under-qualified, undertrained and underpaid staff in any sector of the economy. She said that hundreds of thousands of carers were paid below the national minimum wage, forced to accept zero-hour contracts, only few have any qualifications and even fewer have chances to train.

Health entrepreneurs selling life-saving products to NHS

London: Now there is a new wave of entrepreneurs and medical technology start-ups which are selling life-saving products to the NHS. Telecoms analyst Syed Abrar wanted to create a digital tool that would help mental health patients cope with the day-to-day, and reduce stigma surrounding such afflictions as depression and anxiety.

“The plan was always to build a product that would resolve a social issue,” he says.

So Abrar started Buddy, an application that allows the user to keep a digital mood diary through the simple action of sending a text message.

London: Following terror threats, hundreds of British tourists are being evacuated from Kenya. Scotland Yard has drawn up a policing plan for the east London borough of Tower Hamlets, which has a history of allegations of election crime.

Washington: An IndianAmerican expert in comparative constitutional law has been named dean of a top law school in the US state of California.

Sujit Choudhry, 44, is currently the Cecelia Goetz Professor at New York University School of Law and is the founder of its Centre for Constitutional Transitions. His five-year term at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law will begin on July 1. In a statement, the University of California Berkeley executive vice chancellor and provost Claude Steele called Choudhry a "brilliant scholar, professor, and mentor", who would inspire and lead with "big ideas" during a time of rapid change in the legal profession.

The Indian-American called the Berkeley Law deanship the opportunity of a lifetime.

29 walkers walk 96 miles in just 4 days for Shishukunj

‘Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful’. With this thought in mind, on 1st May 2014, 29 walkers and 4 volunteers set out from Stanmore at 10 am to drive 8 hours up to the Scottish Highlands. Their sole aim was to walk Scotland’s premier long distance walk – The West Highlands Way to raise money for Shishukunj. The trek was 96 miles long from Milngavie to Fort William and the challenge was to walk this in just 4 days!

The National Geographic rates this walk as one of the ‘World’s Top 20 Best Walks’!

The real journey had begun many months earlier with training beginning after Christmas. The group started with just a few miles a day and peaked at consec-

utive days of walking 24 miles per day before the main challenge. The training was completed in many different terrains around the London area. The walkers’ ages ranged from 27 years to 64 years with varying degrees of fitness. For some it was their first such pursuit whilst others were seasoned and had already run a few marathons. The group also consisted of people from different professions.

Each morning after a hearty breakfast, the first team would depart at 7 am followed by the other teams in 15 minute intervals. We carried our own provisions of water, nuts, chocolate

and cereal bars etc and set out walking for 13-14 hours, covering - up to 28 miles per day. Out of the 29 walkers, a couple of people had to drop out due to injuries, but all the rest finished, ecstatic, despite a lot of us suffering from knee pains and blisters. World Rejoices Modi's Victory

LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan said the ‘miracle’ of NDA getting so many seats in the Lok Sabha polls was possible only because Modi was projected as the prime ministerial candidate.

Paswan termed the new responsibilities on Modi’s shoulders as ‘crown of thorns and not a garland of flowers’ as it was important to deliver on promises in a time-bound manner. He stressed on the need for a ‘strong’ and not ‘helpless’ Prime Minister.

Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal described his party's association with BJP as ‘inseparable’. In his brief acceptance speech, Modi said even though BJP got a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha polls, NDA allies will be as important for him as they would have been without it. He also recalled that

in the beginning of Lok Sabha polls, NDA initiated with three parties and now 29 partners are set to work collectively.

Following his unanimous election as the leader of BJP parliamentary party, Modi got emotional during his speech and broke down when he referred to L K Advani's mention that he had done favour to the party by taking up the responsibility.

“Can serving the mother be a favour? A son is only dedicated to serve the mother. The favour has been done by the party,” he said addressing the newlyelected MPs of the party in the historic Central Hall of Parliament.

Committing his government to all sections of the society, particularly the youth, women and poor, Modi said, “I want to assure the people of the country that there is no need for pessimism going by the past bad experience...I am a very optimistic man and only an optimistic man can bring optimism in the country.”

His name was proposed by party patriarch L K Advani and supported by senior leaders, including Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari.

The election was an important formality before Modi approached President Pranab Mukherjee for formation of his government.

Advani remarked during the meeting that Modi was a "popular" and "famous" leader and he was happy to propose his name.

Modi's triumph capped an amazing run for the 63year-old chief minister of Gujarat, who ran a highvoltage campaign that rewrote the political rulebook and caught his rivals napping. Modi himself won from both Vadodara as well as Varanasi. BJP won 73 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. In Bihar, BJP won 23 out of 40 seats and in Delhi the BJP won all the 7 seats. Many prominent Congress ministers lost, including Sushilkumar Shinde, Kapil Sibal and Sachin Pilot. Arun Jaitley was a prominent loser on the BJP side, undone by anti-incumbency against the ruling Akali Dal in Amritsar. In Odisha Biju Janata Dal won 19 seats and BJP got two seats, while Congress failed to open its account. After winning the election Modi visited his mother and sought her blessings. On May 17 Modi visited Delhi and later to Varanasi to rousing receptions. Big winners included J Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK, which won 36 of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress won 34 of 42 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party, which stunned observers by winning the Delhi assembly last year, made an encouraging Lok Sabha debut by winning 4 seats in Punjab.

Meanwhile, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and heir-apparent Rahul accepted responsibility for the party's worst-ever defeat but without acknowledging the magnitude of the debacle, and made no reference to Modi in their concession speeches. There was very little the Congress could do right in these Lok Sabha elections, putting up a sorry show across the country, perhaps the worst in the party's hoary history. It is also the first time that a ruling party has failed to muster 54 MPs - 10% of LS seats - to be eligible for the post of leader of opposition.

Probables in Modi cabinet

The BJP leadership made some progress in settling top slots in government with party chief Rajnath Singh tipped to be the home minister while senior leader Arun Jaitley could be the next finance minister.The hunt for a suitably distinguished post for Advani has not met with much success and the party leadership is unclear how to define the saffron elder's role and work out an arrangement where he can be a mentor.

With Rajnath and Jaitley expected to occupy two key slots in the cabinet committee on security (CCS), Modi is still left with the tough task of filling the two other CCS slots, external affairs and defence. Sushma Swaraj, who was Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha, is keen on a CCS berth, but there are doubts if Modi will be keen to accommodate her.

Though Swaraj is certain to be offered an important portfolio - HRD and health were referred to - her lack of enthusiasm for Modi's PM candidature may have weakened her claim to a seat at the ministerial highest table.

Among allies, LJP leader Ramvilas Paswan is certain to get an important portfolio, keeping in mind the assessment that the alliance helped the BJP gain a solid edge over rival RJDCongress and JD(U). It is not certain if Paswan will get railways, a portfolio he has held before. Other senior leaders who seem certain ministerial picks, but who's portfolio allocations are not clear, include Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ananth Kumar, Gopinath Munde, Piyush Goel, Rajiv Rudy, Ramesh Bais, Vidyasagar Rao, Harsh Vardhan, Varun Gandhi, Kirit Somaiyya and Jual Oram. Among allies, LJP leader Ramvilas Paswan, Harsimrat Kaur, Anant Geete, Upendra Kushwaha and Anupriya Patel are in the reckoning for ministerial positions.

It is a tragedy for the families who have to suffer bereavement, over 20 men from Britain are believed to have been killed so far, and also shame and humiliation as they face the anger of their community in the UK and themselves come to terms with the revelation of their sons’ radicalisation. Recently the police launched a campaign, as part of the Prevent strategy, to get families – in particular –mothers to look for signs of radicalisation and to dissuade their sons’ and inform the police but it is often the families who are last to know of the radicalisation which their sons’ hide from them. It is the disseminators who keep just within the law that must be tackled it is they who encourage the actions of these brainwashed recruits.

It’s a tragedy that, far

from the conflict in Syria coming to an end, the terrorist threat from these radicalised recruits returning home, further radicalised and better trained, spreading their ideology, has the potential to be a huge threat to the security of the UK. We must urgently develop a response to this threat, the police have already arrested over 40 people this year for Syria related offences on their return to the UK that is twice as many as in the whole of 2013.

It’s a tragedy that even though the police and Crown Prosecution Service are –rightlyarresting and prosecuting terrorists who return from Syria, the maximum tariff for many will be only ten years. The terrorism law, under which they will be prosecuted, dates back to 2006, long before the conflict in Syria began. It is time to review this outdated law and introduce an automatic life tariff for these terrorists. We must also tackle the extremism at root cause and I urge the Government to urgently review the Prevent strategy and the Terrorism Act 2006 and open a debate on how we deal with this time-bomb.

On a day when Kings XI Punjab were tested by luckless Delhi, Mumbai Indians played like one and thrashed Rajasthan Royals by 25 runs.

Cricket rocked by new fixing evidence

Former New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent has given officials from the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit with a treasure trove of information about matches which were targeted for spot-fixing and the names of players who were involved.

Domestic matches played by English counties are among those about which Vincent has provided detailed evidence from the period when he was playing for Lancashire and Sussex, along with details of fixing in at least four other countries.

He has also informed them of the details of an approach by another corrupt player to a current international captain, who turned down the offer and reported it to anti-corruption officials.

Investigators from the ICC’s anti-corruption unit are working with detectives employed by cricket boards around the world to piece together a complex case which they believe will emerge as the biggest fixing scandal since the Hansie Cronje affair 14 years ago,

Lou Vincent and possibly even more significant than that.

Vincent has agreed a plea bargain in the hope of avoiding a criminal prosecution for his involvement in and knowledge of spot-fixing in five or more countries over a four-year period between 2008-2012. He revealed in December he would co-operate with detectives and confessed to an ICC tribunal investigating fixing in Bangladesh earlier this year that he had been approached by an illegal bookmaker.

It is understood the ICC’s anti-corruption police are close to charging a former Pakistan international cricketer based on evidence provided by Vincent. The investigation crosses several international jurisdictions

and is expected to take another 12-18 months to complete with anti-corruption officers determined to use the information and land convictions.

Several of his allegations are believed to involve matches played in the now defunct Indian Cricket League, where he said players were offered bribes of money and prostitutes by shadowy figures involved in the tournament. He has also provided names and dates of meetings with fixers which are being cross-referenced by the ICC. His evidence has laid bare the threat of corruption to Twenty20 competitions in England and elsewhere which interest fixers in Asia when they are screened live on television in India.

Vincent became a roving Twenty20 specialist playing in England, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa and New Zealand when his international career ended in 2007 after 23 Tests and 103 one-day internationals.

He has told anti-corruption police of attempted fixing in the Twenty20 Cup in England when he played for

Lancashire and Sussex. He has admitted trying to persuade one Lancashire teammate to participate in a fix, but the player reported the approach to the authorities.

Another county player is believed to have agreed to a fix before backing out. A 40over match between Sussex and Kent in 2011 in which Vincent played is being subjected to special scrutiny by the ICC for evidence of corruption. He has also told investigators of fixing when he played for the Auckland Aces in the Twenty20 Champions League tournament in South Africa in October 2012. He has also detailed incidents in the Hong Kong Sixes competition.

A spokesman for the ICC stated the board never comments on anti-corruption matters.

The evidence from Vincent is seen as a valuable method of piecing together patterns of behaviour by fixers and how they target players with gifts and money, and then follow them around the world when they play in different tournaments.

The absence of Andrew Flintoff, who was speculated to return to Notts Outlaws for the match, gave Samit Patel a chance to take centre stage at Nottingham. His ankle injury, though, could delay that spectacle until the end of the month and what they in fact saw was clinical, more than explosive, batting from the Notts Outlaws that Lancashire Lightning never threatened to match.
