Britain opens new chapter with Modi
UK envoy James Bevan meets Gujarat CM to develop relations with state
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi shakes hands with British High Commissioner to India James Bevan at Gandhinagar on Monday.
Commissioner said. Modi also welcomed the decision of British Prime Minister David Cameron to strengthen and develop relations with Gujarat. He said he appreciates Britain’s Foreign Office minister Hugo Swire’s statement on behalf of the British government and its people to develop relations with the state, sources said. Following on from the recent announcement by the UK Government to enhance relations with Gujarat and its chief Minister Narendra Modi, Sir James Bevan, the UK High Commissioner to India, visited Gujarat on Monday. It was the first time in over 10 years that a senior UK official had visited the state to meet Mr Modi – opening a new chapter in relations. Though it was downplayed as just a courtesy visit by the UK, the significance of the meeting was reflected in the huge media interest in the meeting across India and the world. Narendra Modi is seen increasingly as the most credible candidate to become prime minister of India in polls scheduled for 2014. Bevan was with Modi for almost an hour in Gandhinagar, heralding a cordial beginning to resuming diplomatic ties.
