Olympics: London dazzled in a grand opening spectacle
ery to make it seem that Britain's beloved 86-yearold Queen Elizabeth II had parachuted into the stadium with the nation's most famous spy. A short film showed 007 driving up to Buckingham Palace in a black London cab and, pursued by her majesty's royal dogs - Monty, Willow and Holly, playing them-
selves - meeting the Queen, who played herself. "Good evening, Mr. Bond," she said. They were shown flying in a helicopter over London landmarks and a waving statue of Winston Churchill - the queen in a salmon-colored gown, Bond dashing as ever in a black tuxedo - to the stadium and then leaping
Anna Hazare started his indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar amid impressive public response. Aggressive as ever, he attacked the government for not establishing a strong institution of Lokpal and vowed to fight till death for his cause. The poor turnout witnessed at Jantar Mantar which marked three days of indefinite fast by his team members, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai gave way to large crowds. The 75-year-old activist asked people not to worry about his health as people will not let him die. “I am ready to sacrifice my life for the cause. I am confident that people will not let me die.” He accused the government of betraying him three times. He referred to 15 ministers of the Manmohan Singh govern-
ment who are listed by his team as corrupt and said they were blocking the passage of a strong Lokpal Bill. He asserted that his movement was to awaken the people to the fact that they were the real masters and politicians their servants. He refuted the charge that he had deviated from his path and said: “It is the government which is moving away from its path. Our main demand is to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed.” Anna Hazare said he was neither joining politics nor launching a political party but would support "honest" and "good candidates" nominated by people in the 2014 general elections. The 75-year-old anti-corruption crusader said several people have been asking him to come out with an "alternative" against corrupt politicians. Continued on page 26

out into the inky night. At the same moment, real skydivers appeared in the skies over the stadium throbbing to the James Bond soundtrack. And moments after that, the monarch appeared in person, accompanied by her husband Prince Philip. Organizers said it was thought to be the first time the monarch has acted on film. Boyle sprang a giant surprise and picked seven teenage athletes for the supreme honor of igniting the Olympic cauldron. Together, they touched flaming torches to trumpetlike tubes that spread into a ring of fire. Boyle, though, like the true showman he is, saved the best till last. His interpretation of a Saturday night in suburbia which wrapped things up before the athletes arrived was a work of inspired genius. To one side of the stadium, a semi-detached house appeared. Then in the middle a huge inflatable version was erected, on to which were projected images of what was going on inside. And on this particular night, it was party time, Continued on page 26
