Communities and leaders must confront 'child abuse'

The depressingly shocking sex grooming incidents, court cases, several individuals in long imprisonments is too painful and embarrassing to narrate, but at the same time one cannot forget the 'ugly' incidents happening in our own cities involving 'young teenagers'- especially in North England. Dozens of men used underage girls, many of them in council care, for sex over five years. Many of the victims and abusers were known to the authorities, who took no action. Child protection professionals dismissed the girls as consenting to their own abuse.

He added that agencies across the country had failed to get a grip on the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young girls. He also praised the courage of the victims of such abuse who had come forward to tell their stories. His comments came after an official report this week laid bare the failings of police and social services in Rochdale.

Mr Clegg said that neither the ethnicity of the abusers nor the hands-off approach to apparently independent yet underage girls was excusable. “It is completely unacceptable if perceived cultural sensitivities or political correctness ever stops crimes being investigated
