India’s Viswanathan Anand lived up to his reputation as the best rapid player of his generation when he routed challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel 2.5-1.5 in the four-game tiebreakers in Moscow to win his fifth World Chess Championship title last week. The 8.5-7.5 overall win (including 12 classical games) gave Anand Rs 86 million while Gelfand took home Rs 64 million ($1.02 million). By winning the title, Anand automatically qualifies for the next year's World championship to be played in India. Anand had won the WCC title in 2000 (Tehran), 2007 (Mexico), Bonn (2008) and Sofia (2010). Continued on page 26

The future of the Union has been under much deliberation off lately. Probably to avoid any later criticism, the Royal family and the Government doubly ensured that this jubilation remained a truly British event as opposed to just an English one. Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish accents could be heard more often in the capital over the last few days. Hundreds and thousands of people travelled all the way to London to take part in this festivity. The Queen was joined by her consort as she began her celebrations at the Epsom Derby on Saturday. The jubilee celebration kick started with a 41-gun salute that was fired at the Tower of London while other gun salutes echoed across Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast on the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were driven onto the course with racegoers cheering as the Royal motorcade reached the winning post. Continued on page 13
