Lets face the future
O
n the auspicious occasion of Diwali and forthcoming Hindu New Year, with folded hands, I would like to convey my best wishes and prayers to all my readers, patrons and supporters. Diwali more correctly Deepotsavi is the oldest celebrations. It is just not a Hindu festival but it is also observed by the followers of all Indic religions, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs. Along with the Indian diaspora, it has also become an international festival celebrated everywhere the Indians reside. The festivities are held in the British Houses of Parliament, the Whitehouse in the US and involves Indians and non Indians. It is an ideal opportunity of stock taking as well as planning ahead for a better future- in terms of financial and family well being, along with peace everywhere, it is an all inclusive festival. In a country larger than the Western Europe, the New Year has some different dates. For most of the British Hindus, Tuesday 13th November is the Diwali day- last day of the Vikram Sambat 2068. On Wednesday the 14th, we embark on the New Year and the new era. In Britain the past year has again proved to be a challenge. We the British Indians along with our brethren from other ethnic minorities are continuously endeavouring to do better in terms of education, commerce, professions and vocations. Inspite of the stress and strain of the continuous harking of 'immigrants', we do our utmost to be an asset to our Karmabhumi- our new home. Great Britain has been very good to us and we in turn are ceaselessly trying to make it even 'greater'. Of all the recent 'migrants', British Indians have done better than most to reciprocate to the hospitality, tolerance and fairness which are the hallmark of this great country. All of us are duly disturbed if not pained by the greed of those in power in India. Accumulating stolen wealth of huge amounts or of Himalayan proportion is neither useful nor beneficial and still some irresponsible individuals are engaged in suppressing the Dalits and the deprived. Gandhi is readily available by dime a dozen. But there is something observed in India over the ages that the public will be able to defy and the oppressors will be dealt with appropriately. The road is bumpy, full of hazards but the core value of the Indian civilisation and the inbuilt strength of The Constitution will correct the course, perhaps sooner than later. Diwali is a time for firm resolution, not only for personal progress but for the common good as well. We all have our role to play as individuals to improve the quality of life. We at ABPL took a bold step over an year ago by rejecting adverts from the so called magic healers, psychics and others who were exploiting the hardships and problems of the vulnerable members of the society. Our small step along the ethics of the profession is costing us a huge amount, but with the support of our readers, advertisers and well wishers, we have remained both viable as well as are able to hold our head high. Ours is just a small sacrifice to remain committed to the profession of service towards our readers and the community at large.
Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice 2012 -

Diwali message from Parliamentarians and Community leaders Diwali is a festival that feels ever more relevant in the twenty-first century as we celebrate the victory of good over evil. It is a time to reflect on the year gone by, to brush away our bitterness and negativity and to pray for both forgiveness for our wrongdoings, whilst also praying for wisdom to become better people. Like a diwa lamp I hope that we can bring light and joy to our family, friends, community and to this great country that has given us so much. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year. Lord Popat of Harrow Diwali is a time of joy and happiness, a time when we reflect on the past and hope for the future. As we celebrate the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness, let us also have a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves: the hungry and thirsty, the lonely and destitute, those who have no home or shelter and those for whom every day is a struggle for the basic necessities that we take for granted. All good wishes to your readers for a Happy Diwali, peace, prosperity and happiness.
Diwali is a time of great celebration amongst family and friends - a festival that marks the triumph of good over evil and darkness over light. It's a time to celebrate the best of human spirit and the determination that we will make the world of tomorrow even better than today. On this auspicious occasion of happiness and prosperity, I wish everyone a wonderful, exciting and happy Diwali. Seema Malhotra, MP I pay a tribute to the very many community organisations who every year, without fail lead events to celebrate key festivals like Navratri and Diwali in my constituency of Harrow and Brent. I thank them for hosting such events and keep- ing the flag of Hindu values flying. The celebrations are more than the religious rituals – they mark our cultural heritage and inspire the young British Hindus to practice and promote the ideals of peace, inclusivity and harmony. Its great to be a Londoner because one gets to celebrate and appreciate a whole host of different events given we are multicultural and multi-religious community. Happy Diwali and a happy New Year. Cllr Navin Shah AM
Shailesh Vara MP I want to wish everyone a very Happy Diwali and a peaceful and prosperous new year! Diwali is a story of celebration of the return of Lord Rama and Sita having vanquished the evil Ravana. It is a story of good over evil and today we can all reflect on the past year to commemorate our own personal achievements in conquering similar evils together. This year, I have been visiting local charities in my constituency of Ealing Southall that work tremendously hard to tackle the everyday evils of our society. I celebrate with them on their hard work and success and hope today they enjoy this special festival of lights.
Deepavali (meaning a garland of lights) also commemorates the death of Narakasura at the hands of Lord Sri Krishna. It is believed that Narakasura, a wicked demon, tortured common people and they prayed to lord krishna to defeat him. The people then celebrated Narakasura's defeat with sparkles, lights and crackers. This celebration was continued down the generations as Deepavali. The day begins with an early morning oil bath, wearing new clothes, burst- ing of crackers, visiting Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu/Siva temples. The exchange of sweets between the neighbours, visiting the relations, preparing Deepavali special sweets are tradition of the day. On Behalf of World Tamil Organisation, I wish you, your families and loved ones A Happy Deepavali!

Homecoming of goodwill and faith
Diwali celebration in Trafalgar Square 2012
Diwali is celebrated differently in different states of India. While the north and west of India celebrate home coming of Lord Ram, Bengal celebrates Kali Puja, as the South celebrates the conquer of Asura Naraka by Lord Krishna. This year Diwali is from Sunday 11th November till Thursday 15th November 2012.

In Britain, Diwali has its own fervour in different cities. London celebrates Diwali through many small and big functions. The biggest of all is Diwali on Trafalgar Square by the Mayor of London, which is attended by thousands of people, every year. It is also celebrated by the Prime Minister in 10 Downing Street and in the Westminster, by different MPs. Leicester marks the celebrations by hanging over 6500 festive lights, especially around Belgrave Road. Even Birm-

iwali not only stands for good over evil, light before darkness, but it also marks an opportunity to pause and be grateful to what we have achieved in our life. Symbolically as we all know know Diwali stands for the homecoming of goodwill and faith after an absence, as in Ramayana. And it is indeed the time to make special memories with family, friends and close ones. While Deepavali is popularly known as the festival of light, the most important meaning is the inner awareness or consciousness, with which comes compassion, love and higher knowledge or wisdom.

New Zealand Diwali is celebrated publicly by many cultural groups. There are public festivals in the cities of Auckland and Wellington every year. Australia also celebrates Diwali, especially in the Parliament House in Sydney. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals from South Asia, and is also the occasion for celebrations by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Diwali extends over five days and celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance, although the actual legends that go with the festival are different in different parts of India. Because of the lights, fireworks, and sweets involved, it's a great favourite with children too.
wali is celebrated in the White House. The Indians living in the US obviously celebrates it with much pomp and gaiety exactly like the people of UK or Australia. The majority of population in Indonesia follow Islam. But Bali is famous for celebrating Diwali, as the majority of the population there are Hindus. The celebration and rituals of the festival is mostly similar to that celebrated by the counterparts in India.
In Britain, Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate Diwali much as they do in India, cleaning and decorating their homes with lamps, giving each other traditional sweets. In India as well as Britain, on the day of Diwali, the doorways are hung with torans of mango leaves and marigolds. Rangolis are drawn with different coloured powders to welcome guests. The traditional motifs are often linked with auspicious symbols of good luck. Oil diyas are arranged in and around the house. Around the world especially in

Mauritius is an island in the Indian ocean. It accounts to 63% Indians and about 80% of them are Hindus. Hence Diwali is celebrated with much festivity. Same as Malaysia with 8% Hindus, Nepal and South Africa.

A very special Diwali ■ Lord Popat Conservative Peer and Party Whip in the House of Lords his year’s Diwali will have added significance for many thousands of Ugandan Asians as it commemorates the 40th anniversary of their expulsion from Uganda. Their expulsion echoes the banishment of Lord Rama from Ayodhya and as a community we have come out stronger, making the Ugandan Asians –as the Prime Minister said in April of this year at the launch of the Conservative Friends of India- one of the most successful immigrant communities of all time anywhere. Unlike in the Ramayan, the majority of Ugandan Asians have never returned back to their Ayodhya, but instead have created their own Ayodhya here in Britain. Recently I was speaking at an event on immigration and integration and was asked ‘what the secret was behind the success of the Ugandan Asian community?’ My answer was simple; the success of the Ugandan Asian community is down to shared values, a respect for British culture and their willingness to integrate into their local communities. This success is not just limited to Ugandan Asians but spans across the entire British Indian community, to whom prioritising education, entrepreneurship, family, hard-work and service to the community come naturally. Today British Indians are part and parcel of British life. I can think of no greater example than the very visible role our community played in this year’s historic Diamond Jubilee celebrations and unforgettable Olympic and Paraylmpic Games. The phrase ‘proud to be British, proud to be Hindu” was truly evident this year when a number of Hindu Temples across the country proudly flew the Union Flag in tribute to Her Majesty for her Diamond Jubilee. This patriotic act reinstated our Hindu values of respect and humility. It is acts like this that demonstrate how well we have integrated and why we are such a successful community. In addition British Indians across the country cheered on our athletes, volunteered as games makers and helped to show to visitors that London
T
truly is the greatest city in the world. For many the nightmare that our friends and family lived forty years will be subdued this Diwali. As a community, it really feels like me have won the battle against evil and are returning back victorious. This is largely down to our resilience and our determination to make a go of things in Britain even if it meant starting from scratch. The sorrow of leaving everything behind has been overcome by how much more we have been given in return. I’m proud to say that forty years on, many Ugandan Asians are at the top of their professions and helping to lead this great country into new and exciting fields but the road to success has by no way been easy.
Asians were faced with wide spread hostility and were in grave danger of becoming stateless. Many of us will remember the adverts in Leicester telling “settlers to go elsewhere as the city was full up.” It is hard for many of our younger members to understand what their parents and grandparents faced. For many –if not most- of us who came to Britain we had never asked for handouts in our lives, yet we had nothing. This would not have been possible without the support of the then Prime Minister, Edward Heath and his Conservative Government who went out of his way (even against strong opposition from corners of his Party) to welcome us in such a compassionate way. The resentment made us stronger and even more determined to integrate ourselves, and today it is clear that Uganda’s lose is very much Britain’s gain. I still remember the determination of our community leaders to celebrate Diwali here in Britain, even though many of us barely a roof over our heads.
Like many we had scarce resources and we were not accustomed to celebrating Diwali in the cold and rain Lord Dolar Popat – but this did not stop our community leaders from hiring an old Church hall to conduct our ceremonies. Celebrating Diwali today in Britain today is an absolute privilege. As a community we have become ingrained in the British way of life without sacrificing our beliefs. A day does not go by without my being thankful for what this great country has given us. Our experiences have shaped us into who we are today and we have tasted both the hardships of life and also the rewards of determination. This Diwali is also a very special for the Gujarat Samachar and Asian Voice who are also celebrating their 40th anniversary. This publication is more than just a newspaper and is a beacon of light for our entire community. I was honoured to attend their Anand Mela this year, where we celebrated not only the publication’s anniversary, but also paid tribute to Her Majesty the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee by singing the national anthems for both the UK and India. This was again a perfect example of how well British Indians have integrated with and contributed to society. Today the publication has vastly expanded its remit and is involved in a number of community projects and charitable causes, in particular the Sarvam Trust, which is a part of Sri Aurobindo Society, Akshayapatra and Devdaya and many others. The publication is going from strength to strength and there is certainly no danger that our traditions and cultures will be eroded away in this country. In fact as CB is getting older his paper is getting younger and I am delighted that today the paper is accessible for our new generation of British Indians through an array of very talented, young journalists. As a community we have faced the greatest test of faith and this Diwali will indeed be a very special Diwali as we celebrate our own victory of good over evil.

Bright and Flamboyant
N
o Diwali is ever complete without an Indian wardrobe update. Though women seldom wear Indian clothes regularly in Britain, but the thrill of buying an Indian dress or a saree to flaunt around during Diwali is a different joy altogether. There are mainly three types of Indian dresses that we usually see women or girls wearing- a salwar kameez, saree or lehenga. Each of these have undergone several modifications and every year is a reflection of a historical era and style statement. This year it's the return of the extra long or layered fabric. You must have seen Aishwarya Rai's 39th birthday picture. It's the come back of ankle length kameez with churidars. While georgette, chiffon are popular as ever, silk and net are the most 'happening' this season. Heavy embroidery in fluorescent or bright colours is 'in', while the Anarkali cut still dominates, often with sheer sleeves, bordered with embroideries or borders matching rest of the kameez. Sarees have a similar trend, with very interesting styles in blouses and of course striking colour combinations. This is the year of contrasts. With a mono colour saree full of embroideries, women are opting for bright coloured contrast blouse, matching the same embroidery as in the body of the saree. With net being as fashionable as before, a purple saree with nice heavy embroideries and a fine red satin border, contrasted with a bright red blouse, embroidered with purple lining makes an excellent festive wear. But then again if you fancy lighter shades, there is plenty in store for you. Combination of crème as the body and other radiant colours as borders and blouse, is in fashion too. The other striking aspect of this year's fashion is the use of velvet. Pick a nice and bright yellow net saree with zari embroideries. Wear a red velvet blouse with the same patterns on it. While sleeveless as a style can never be boring, three quarter sleeves have a major popularity this Diwali. If you are a big fan of lahenga, let's give you an insight of what's in vogue this season. The chaniya choli is so last year. The very long shirts on top of lahenga with slits are in this Diwali. If you are thinking a body fit curvaceous lahenga will give you the Kardashain figure, then try a corset with a lahenga. Keep it simple. A mono coloured silk corset with simple thread work, a flowy shiny lahenga with bright skirt
border looks absolutely gorgeous. Add a sheer dupatta to it and you have a complete diva look. But if you prefer an Aline flowing skirts, wear a long fitted shirt (the top), on top of it instead of the choli, preferably mono colour, complementing the heavy embroidered skirt. But whatever be the combination, a thick satin or silk mono coloured border with zari and big patterns are common this season. Sheer shirts over lahenga skirts are popular too, but make sure you know where to draw the line, as its an evening with family, celebrating convention, traditions and togetherness. While women get to drape in metres and metres of flattering fabrics, the men get to look more 'Pathani' or 'Afghani' this year. With short cropped sherwani or jackets, the collar gets little perky and cheerfully bright. Imagine Ranbir Kapoor, doing a ramp walk with a short black sherwani in a red collar, sort of Nehru style with a white dhoti pants- the ultimate Rockstar image. Of course if you like colours, you are most welcome to experiment with different shades like the Maharajas (with brocade et al), but nothing like the mono coloured ones, double breasted buttons, and collars in contrasting colours. Add a mojri to it, and you are ready to dazzle. Dear Readers, Wish u and your family a very happy Diwali & prosperous new year. May God fulfill all your wishes in wealth, health & happiness in your life.

Diwali: Reinforcing a positive way of life â– Kruti Patel, 19 years
I
n this era, for many Diwali is merely a festivity worthy of celebration with close family and friends. The inspiration of good triumphing over evil dates back to 10,000 years ago in Indian civilisation. The puranas depict Lord Ram and his victory against the ten headed demon, Ravan in a mythological manner. However these representations of characters and events, such as those in some well known literary texts can be perceived as being metaphorical. Ravan was a devotee of Lord Shiva and he was given the strength equivalent to that of ten men, thus he was depicted as having 10 heads. History presents how he did not use his strength for the benefit of society, but rather his personal gains in particular to carry out the abduction of Sita. This in many ways made a devotee of Shiva demonical. Diwali can have multiple meanings for an individual. For me, it is not just the festival of lights as the West refers to it, but rather a remembrance of how we must live our lives. Good overcoming evil does not always take a physical manifestation as depicted in a great epic like Ramayan. Whilst Ravan meets his eventual fate in the hands of the Lord himself, we human beings may not directly encounter such physical evil in this day and age. Rather, both good and evil is a branch of our minds, whereby we often struggle to do what is right and indulge in temptations, which often are our personal setbacks. Sometimes I think that it is essential that we overcome our internal battles and so Diwali can mark a new beginning- perhaps a new path in life, as well as awakening a light within us. In our home, Diwali has also been a simple occasion, but all members of the extended family are expected to get involved in the preparations for it. Before Dhanteras a thorough house clean is carried out and the divas (usually new ones each year) are taken out, which are lighted throughout the five days. On the first day, my mother usually makes small preparations. Indian sweets and snacks are either cooked at home or bought from outside. Unlike India's friendly weather, British
A Painting from the Metropolitan Museum, New York
weather is never so predictable, so there was often an issue with designing a rangoli at the entrance of our home. But over the years my mother has always used standard rangoli powders and glue to produce ornate designs on wooden planks, which are usually displayed inside the home.
Gujaratis refer to the second day of Diwali as Kali Chaudas, which is celebrated on the 14th day of ashwin by Hindus. Again this is a day dedicated to the worship of Mahakali or Shakti who happened to defeat evil on this day. This day is also attached to the legend of Hanuman and a story of Satyabhama (Lord's Krishna's wife) putting the life of the wicked Narkasur at an end. These events in turn for thousands of years have been cele-
brated through the lighting of lamps. Usually in that morning of Diwali members of our immediate family sit together to pray. It is a remembrance what types of wealth we should accumulate; a wealth that is earned truthfully, sincerely and through sheer hard work. The significance of Lakshmi pooja is highlighted. Bestu varash or new year is usually when the extended family sit and have a meal together. The occasion is commonly marked by setting off fireworks or even attending the finest firework displays. This a time to make new goals and resolutions for the coming year whilst awakening a sense of hope and optimism. The final day (Bhai beej) as it is referred to marks the scared bond between a brother and sister, where the sister wishes her brother a long, healthy and prosperous life. In our family this occasion is celebrated with the sister inviting her brother for lunch or dinner. Traditions tend to vary depending on the household and its members. The celebrations of Diwali are perhaps more appealing for Hindus in India, just as Christmas is more attractive in a Christian country. Whether or not one truly believes in tradition, there is no doubt that such festivities strive to bring together or strengthen existing family ties, reinforcing a positive way of life that enriches good thoughts and actions. A time for serenity ■ Kavita Vanik, 21 years iwali is celebrated by followers of Dharmic religions. Jains celebrate Lord Mahavira’s attainment of Nirvana, Sikhs celebrate Diwali to signify the release of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobindji and 52 princes from imprisonment and Hindus all across the world mark the auspicious occasion of Siya-Raam and Laxman’s return to Ayodhya. No matter who you are and where you are from, Diwali is a time where people forget their woes and light the lamp of goodness so that we may overcome darkness. My family is no different. Diwali is a time for serenity in my household, a time where we reflect on our duties as individuals, as family members and as citizens of a country, so that we may sprinkle some of Shri Raam’s wonderful qualities of Love, Compassion and Respect, into our everyday lives. Our day begins peacefully. Every family member makes an extra effort to wake up early and to dress their best for a visit to the Mandir so that we may thank God for another peaceful year and request Him to bless us with further joy and growth in all aspects of our lives, for the coming year. Then it’s time for the meeting, greeting and laughing to our hearts’ content with family friends who shower us with, what feels like, unlimited selection of Indian sweets. These sweets are generally not consumed throughout the year, as we strive to maintain our healthy diets, however, the rule is forgotten on Diwali and we find ourselves consuming a whole years’ worth of sugar. As our stomachs begin to grow at an alarming pace, night time edges closer and the Divas are lit to ensure that on this joyous day, we
D
light as many lamps as we can, so that we may remember the power of good over evil. The warmth from the Divas and the fragrance from the incense sticks make our home seem mystical and there are plenty of moments where I find myself in awe of a home that I tend to overlook on the other 364 days. It is a majestic sight. One of my favourite moments of the festive season are the consecutive days of Puja, starting from Dhanteras and lasting until Bhai Beej. The prayers are different to the daily prayers that take place throughout the year, because during these 5 days, all 5 family members gather around the Shrine at home and offer their respects as a unit. Once the sound of chanting and the Puja come to a close, we venture out into the garden to light the biggest fireworks we could find. As the day nears an end, I find myself inspired by the qualities Shri Raam possessed. Respect, Love, Compassion and Duty to His family makes a strong impression on me and I vow to bring these values into my own life for the coming year. Although Diwali is special every year, the one aspect that is missing from our Diwali is the presence of our grandparents. Just like Shri Raam during his 14 year exile, we are patiently waiting for the day that we can spend Diwali with our extended family, mainly with Daadima and Dada, whose phone call from India is what, ultimately, makes our Diwali different, memorable and priceless. I would like to wish to all of the Asian Voice readers and the followers of Dharmic religions all over the world, a Shubh Dipavali and SaalMubarak for the coming year.
What I miss about my Indian Diwali ■ Neeti Rao, 16 years iwali is the most prestigious festival celebrated all over the world by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. I lived in India for the first seven years of my life and celebrating Diwali in India, was such a grand experience. It was a pleasure to be a part of such a colourful festival, the pomp and gaiety. The Indian pop-
D
follow the music here, so I eventually missed all that made my Indian diwalis so special. Any Indian festival is certainly incomplete without food and sweets. Every celebration has its own specialty of food, sweets and drinks. Diwali marks a generous consumption of sweets like Barfi, Sohan Papdi, Gulab Jamun, Ras
ulation celebrates Diwali with such energy, enthusiasm and style that it seems to even bring life into something that is absolutely dull. As a young child, I never understood the true meaning of Diwali and its purpose. I would light fireworks and perhaps even waste a lot of food, never think of how it could affect our environment and our world. Growing up has taught me many things on how we are putting ourselves into danger by not using our resources correctly. Fireworks create a lot of pollution and is quite dangerous towards global warming. So we need to refrain from such usage and take special care of this planet. Music holds a very important place in any celebration. Diwali also has its own music, own rhythm and own essence. When I came to London, I did not quite
malai and likes. One ingredient is however common in all those food items and that is love and happiness. Living in London, I miss the Diwali food of India the most. I miss the variety, the process, its ingredients and the love that people added to the food, making it more special. I haven’t celebrated Diwali in India for many years now but coming to London at a very tender age I have moulded myself into some of the traditions that people in here believe in and I feel that maybe celebrating Diwali in London is not so bad after all. Gradually, I have started to love London and its surroundings and I have realised that I am a part of it too. There is always a part of me that wants to go to India and celebrate Diwali there, but the other part wants to be a part of London Diwali, the way it is now.

Diwali a time for firework displays, family fun and spirits ■ Sagari Datta, 17 years
D
iwali, also known as “the festival of lights” has always been a joyous occasion where all the family can join in with the festivities. Diwali for Hindu's are the most important event in the Indian calendar, however for Bengalis Diwali is called “Kali Puja”. This is when we worship the deity Kali who is an incarnation of Parvati. Along with Durga Puja, Kali Puja is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in Bengal. The legend has it that after the goddess Durga came down to slay the demons from Earth. Unfortunately, she got caught up in battle and then went on a killing spree where she not only killed the demons but this included humans, predominantly men as well and in doing this she turned into her alter ego Kali. The gods, seeing this destruction, called upon Lord Shiva, who had to be awoken from his deep mediation, for help. On his attempt to stop her he simply lay down in front of her and as she stepped on her husband, this broke her trance and started to calm down again, however in the process she stuck her tongue out in shame as she realised her mistake. This is the image that Bengalis celebrate today. We depict Kali holding men's heads and hanging on her waist however, her foot is placed on Lord Shiva's chest and her tongue is sticking out in surprise. As a child I spent celebrated Kali Puja in Kolkata with my family including my great aunts and uncles, cousins and seconds cousins, anyone really from our long and extended family tree, festivals were massive events for us. Every year we would go to lush countryside to small place called Boral. It was originally planned among each of my great aunts
and uncles to build houses in one set of land so that they could live together when they all retired, as being away from the city meant we could get away from the noise and the pollution. However the dictionary definition of retirement age seems not to apply to my grandparents as they are still active as ever. During the festival seasons this also meant that when we came together to celebrate we could make as much noise as possible! Once everyone arrived jobs would be allocated to different family members as each are carefully handpicked suited for each job. One group would gather round to one of the buildings to create dazzling fireworks for display during the evening and another would be busily cook the bhog for the family and goddess Kali. Extreme devotees in our families to the goddess will fast for the whole day until they have given pushpanjali, this would be done in the evening after the sun has set. All our family members would gather around the central courtyard where there is a stage specially built to host the statue of the goddess and we all come round together and to give our blessings to Kali. After all the formalities has been dealt with the real entertainment of the night starts. Our family will come round and light the handmade fireworks in the court yard as it is said to ward off any evil spirits that might be around. All sorts of fireworks such as fountains, Catherine wheels, sky rockets just to name a few, burnt bright with vivid colours such as red, orange, green and white. One can never forget the childhood joy of sparklers as we held competitions on who could hold the most lit sparklers at the same time, I can safely say that I did not lose. Coming to this country was a big step for my family and at first it was difficult following and continuing our religious festivals but as we got out we discovered many places that celebrate Kali puja here too. Since we've moved to several place in the UK, I have been to various pujas and seen shared the hearty festivities with my family in places like Sheffield, Bolton, Harrow and Camden town. They all share the same celebrations as I had experienced in Kolkata, with similar displays of fireworks and bhog that tastes just like home and it feels like I have been transported back to Kolkata.

A very special time of the year for me ■ Veeral R Thakker, 11 years iwali is a very special time of the year for me and my family. I always hope that it falls in my school half-term holidays so that I can spend plenty of time with my family and also to do lots of fireworks. T h i s year Diwali is 1 week after my half term, so unfortunately I won’t be able to do many fireworks as I wanted to but there are many other things to do other than that! In the festival of Diwali, my mum and my grandmother make a lot of savouries and sweet dishes for all of us, which we really enjoy eating. On the first day of Diwali me, my brother and my mum have lots of fun making rangolis out of different colours and many different patterns. Normally we start of with
have lots of fun doing sparklers and bangers at home but the best bit is still to come. The big fireworks! As much as possible every night me and my dad light a lot of fireworks and it is really enjoyable, colourful and cold. I like the colours and the very loud noises which are all very exc i t i n g . Everyone in my family gets together to celebrate this auspicious event and it is a very family fun time. On the third day of diwali, which is Dhantaras we perform the Laxmi pooja to celebrate and thank the previous year and the coming of the New Year. The day after Diwali, we celebrate the New Year and this is when we receive lots of gifts from our parents, grandparents and elders. Our day starts of in the morning with a visit to the
delicate designs but end up with something simple but just perfect for us designs. In addition we decorate the house with lights and lamps that are lit every evening. Every day during the lead up to Diwali we
temple, normally the Jalaram temple at Greenford. I am very sad at the end of it but Diwali will always come back again next year.

Diwali The real meaning ■ Tej Shah, 15 years iwali, the festival of light, is one of the most popularly celebrated festivals in the Hindu Calendar. During the festival it is accustom for families to gather together and perform traditional rituals and activities at home. The main story I know that is related to Diwali is the Ramayana. This is when Ram and Sita come back to his town after being banished for 14 years in the forest. The local villagers welcomed him back with lanterns and divas which is one of the reasons why it is called the “Festival of Light”. In contrast, for Jainism (a religion with similar beliefs to Hinduism) there story is different. For Jains, Diwali is a time when they celebrate the fact that the Mahavir, the last Jain Tirthankar of his era, obtained infinite knowledge in other words Moksha. So what does Diwali mean to me? Well every year I mark the occasion as a time to spend with my family and relatives. I also think Diwali allows me to be able to reflect on the past year and ask for forgiveness from my parents and relatives. Although, for many, Diwali is about getting new clothes/presents, going to firework displays, eating typical indian sweets and having a good time. However for me at Diwali I like to visit the temple and thank God for the life I have and secondly, I like to read stories that a related to Diwali so that I can broaden my understanding about the concepts behind the festival.
D
In my family, it is a tradition that we celebrate Diwali together as one. Therefore every year we celebrate the occasion at my Grandma's house at night. Prior to the evening we go to Neasden Temple and look at the wonderful displays of the deities and also receiving prashad (blessed food). After that we go to my extended family and it is a tradition in my family to give presents to my cousins. At night, we return to my grandma's house and have a huge feast that contains traditional Indian sweets and delicious Indian food. It's an annual event I look forward as well as the home-made food I like to engage in conversations with my cousins and uncles. We also do fireworks at home which I find entertaining and rather loud. In the recent years fireworks have become iconic to Diwali and have been part of the commercial side to the festival. However as a Jain my beliefs towards fireworks are not positive. In Jainism we are taught the fireworks can harm the environment which means it can kill certain plants and insects. Many people are concerned that Diwali and other Indian festivals are now being commercialised too much. In India it may still be seen as traditional as it used to be, though in Britain it may have lost its real meaning. Youngsters of my age tend to associate Diwali with just new clothes, fireworks and Indian sweets as opposed to understanding the real meaning and the triumph of good over evil. he real meaning

Tamaso maa jyotir-gamaya ■ Kapil Dudakia ‘Lead me from darkness to light’ – a perfect description for us to consider when we gather to celebrate Diwali. In the 21st Century who or what will lead us to enlightenment? Is it the ever expanding media that transmits 24/7/365 with content that is best described as varying in quality? Is it the ‘Social Media’ sites that profess to be your friend, but holds a secret to sell your personal data to the highest bidder? Is it ‘Twitter’ that limits each of your interactions to 141 characters, yet as some have found to their cost, even in 141 characters it’s possible to make or destroy a reputation? Is it that our ‘darkness’ of the 21st Century is in fact the emerging extremes of the ‘white noise’ in our daily life that has led to our individual and collective blindness? Education is considered by most to be one of the most valuable assets to have which can enhance one’s life and one’s future happiness and prospects. However in the history of the modern era, has there ever been a time when there were as many educated people as we have now (we now have significantly more graduates and post-graduates than ever before)? Yet with all this so called ‘knowledge’ and ‘education’ why is it that we still seem to remain ignorant about the very basics of our own humanity? The more educated the world becomes the greater the amount of ‘human’ we seem to be taking out of our ‘humanity’. Wisdom it seems is not always a by product of education, and it is wisdom that the world lacks so much nowadays. Education has become the pursuit for the collection of certificates, honours and titles. The elite in our society ensure the rat race is maintained with ever increasing numbers in the
Y
middle classes thinking their chase towards this goal will somehow transcend their children into the stratosphere of money, power and influence. Of course some of this might well be true, but at what cost? Not just the monetary cost, but more importantly, the cost of taking the ‘child’ out of our ‘children’. Are we in danger of sacrificing our children at the altar of our parental aspirations? Education, the United Nations states is a fundamental right, yet in how many countries do we truly have that on offer to all the children? If education is truly that important then surely regardless of the colour of your politics, it should be free for all, at least up to one’s first degree. And this is where I fear in Britain we have made a serious error by bringing in tuition fees and the debt that we are piling on to the future that has yet to find its feet. As a nation we seem hell bent in ensuring that our children end up not only with ever increasing debt, but also having to pay higher and higher taxes in order to support the pension rights of the increasing number in retirement. The society of the 21st Century, and beyond, will only succeed by the way in which it deals with the education of the masses. Spending £100 Billion on Trident, a set of nukes that will never really be used, seems absurd when you consider the real life challenges that we face as a nation. If we are not careful we might end up with all the military strength of a superpower, but having lost the society that we wish to protect. There is a fine balance in all of these important decisions – but it seems to me the definition of a modern civil society is one where we assure free education, free health care and an end to poverty. Not easy tasks by any means,
but certainly made easier if politicians can get their act together, stop wasting our money and start applying a bit of common sense to everyday issues. As Nelson Mandela reminded us, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. And in changing this world, our own Bapuji said, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ In ancient history great philosophers contemplated on education with Plutarch saying, ‘The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled’. Plato went on to say, ‘Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each’. In educating a child we bear the greatest of responsibilities since we can make a life that changes the world, or we can damage that life. Trevelyan put it nicely, ‘Education … has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.’ In an age when modern technology allows such quick easy access to a vast ocean of fragmented data – will we develop a new generation that can convert the data into meaning information and knowledge? Or will they be destined to know the price of everything, but the value of nothing? So at Diwali time what is the greatest gift you can give to your child? Give them the opportunity to learn, to live life fully and to grow into people of character possessing good human values. The rest they will do much better than we ever did or ever contemplated.

Diwali 2012 What it means to me ■ Amar Varia
F
ireworks, Rangoli, Mithai and lavish meals; these are just a few images that spring to mind when talking about Diwali. With the festive period right around the corner, I’ve been thinking about what Diwali 2012 means to me – a second generation British Indian approaching 30. As a youngster, I looked forward to the presents and fireworks – name a child that wouldn’t! My mother and nana used to teach me the Ramayan – which I’d then tell my friends at school. We’d visit and host family, the whole experience was exciting for us growing up. More recently however, I’ve become more aware of the deeper spiritual meaning of Diwali by placing focus on the awareness of our inner light. I once read the following quote by Sri Swami Sivananda which set me onto exploring the spiritual path: “Realise the constant and eternal light of the Soul, which neither rises nor sets.” This always reminds me that we all have a powerful weapon within us - the soul and how we have the ability to look within it to illuminate and expel the darkness within us such as ignorance, greed, envy, jealousy etc. It was amazing to see Barak Obama repeat a similar message a few year years back, not only being the first US President to recognise Diwali in such a way but also taking time to embrace the spiritual side of the celebration. Last year, I had the luxury of experiencing Diwali in India for the first time. As you can imagine, the festivities were on another level with professional grade fireworks constantly bursting over a span of three days with no break! Nationwide, even if you were in the most remote village, you would have been unable to escape the celebrations. Despite the extravagance and joy, I still seemed to long for the uniqueness of a humble British Diwali. I couldn’t help but look around and feel that despite India’s step up to being dubbed a future superpower, there are still millions under the poverty line. There are still millions being forced to deal with issues like corruption, untouchability, casteism and medical malpractices. In spite of the doom and gloom mentioned above, this year for India there is a person who has, in my opinion, illuminated the world with his bright soul. That person is Aamir Khan. Using his influence, he’s created not only a talk show but a movement. With Satyamev Jayate, he has raised concerns over issues that no one else has dared and sparked citizens across the country to stand up and act. Visiting India from abroad, it’s easy to point out the flaws. It’s easy to say there are so many rich people that have made it, why don’t they improve the country. Sometimes big changes have to come from education, not money. Educating everyone from the common man to the middle class can potentially be a million times more valuable than simply throwing money at a situation. When a celebrity uses their talent and power to achieve something for the common man, thanks is truly deserved. It’s even more deserved in the current economic climate where celeb status and their role within society may be thrown into question by critics. This Diwali I’ll be spending time with my family, re-
flecting on 2012 and remembering our nana, Mohanlal Prajapati who passed away last November – another man whose inner light illuminated the lives of those around him with good deeds and words. Whether you’ll be celebrating the triumph of Lord Ram, Sri Krishna’s slaying of Narakasura, honouring Lakshmi or inner reflection, I hope you all have a wonderful Diwali full of giving, forgiveness and unity.

Diwali Festival of Light

The Diwali that used to be ■ Shreya Datta, 16 years s a young child, I never understood the true meaning of Diwali. I remember my fellow classmates asking me about it, to which I could only reply with “The festival of lights” - not having any idea what that meant. That being said, if someone were to ask me the same question now, eight years later, I would respond the same way, the difference being that now I understand the story and why Diwali exists for Hindus. Back then, Diwali only meant food, and guests, and fireworks to me. It only came around once a year, but became one of the most exciting festivals of my childhood. Diwali became something I looked forward to months in advance, and I can still remember the excitement that would run through me when my father would come home with boxes of fireworks in his hands. Now that I am older, Diwali is no longer such a big deal in my family; we do not host family parties any more, and we do not set off fireworks in our own garden. It is fun to hold on to the days when my mother would dress me in traditional Indian clothes, and excitedly one

by one I would answer the door to family friend after family friend, and we would all enthusiastically run to the garden to get ready for the fireworks. Thinking back, it does not seem realistic for my family to host large parties that would go on until late at night, and then I remember that a lot of these memories are from when I was a small wide eyed child, only three foot tall from the ground, and of course everything seemed extravagant then. I remember helping my mother set out small candles around the outside of the house, and then of course to be disappointed when the flame died after a few seconds, due to the unfriendly British weather. My mother would ask me to try the Indian sweets she had made, and of course anything with sugar tasted like heaven to me. Over the years, I have grown a dislike towards Indian sweets, this being one more thing I no longer experience during Diwali. Then came the sparklers; we always began with the sparklers, and for some reason it became a tradition that the fireworks were not to begin until every sparkler had been used. I remember the faces of wor-

ried mothers as the small children waved around sparklers, creating shapes and words. I remember my father's hand guiding mine as I attempted to set alight a firework, and then the voices of adults chanting “Do not run, walk away slowly.” Growing up, I have also developed a fear of fire, the “Do not run” rule after lighting a firework still seems ridiculous to me. Feeling nostalgic, it seems that Diwali is mostly the festival for children, and it's sad knowing that I'll never experience Diwali this way again. Nowadays, during Diwali, we visit someone else's house, set off a few fireworks, eat a meal and return home by 10.30. These gatherings will hold two, maybe three families at the most, no match for the large gatherings we held in previous years. It is sad to know that I am slowly letting go of my childhood; slowly you begin to lose touch with the people you used to speak to every day, letting go of your memories together. I hope other children like me are able to experience the magnificent festival of Diwali the way I used to, and I hope they hold on to it, keeping that piece of their childhood.

ouses twinkle in the midst of Diwali celebrations making it seem as if the starry sky has scattered itself all across the soils of Mother Nature. Fireworks are ignited to accompany the ivory moon in a musical manner; getting rid of the darkness covering all. As delighted Shree Ram walks in his victorious procession, freshly made sweets are handed out to touch the smiling mouths. All of which are in a variety of colours and taste symbolising the happy, ecstatic and joyful emotions being explored on this extravagant occasion. If you glance at the middle of the street, you will witness a ray of hope at the entrance of my house. The rangoli patterns draw a path for happiness to lead into as there are twenty diyas lined up in anticipation for Shree Ram as his victory against evil is an inspiration
for us all. The presence of a family of five are sensed as my mother decorates the house with diyas as the rest of the family devotes their time to God for each of the five days of Diwali. Puja is essential as it welcomes God into our immaculate home and prepares us for a prosperous year ahead. Guests are seen in the distance with a handful of gifts for each of us three siblings and Diwali greetings are shared amongst us once the puja is complete. My mother will always make sure she feeds the guests as they are a form of God and their presence is much respected, especially on a special occasion such as this! All of our friends and relatives are dressed from head to toe in bright colours of shimmering Indian clothing for the occasion. Hair would be opened for some, buns for others, short, long, dyed, curled, but most importantly,
they’d be wearing the best accessory of all; a massive smile no matter what troubles they are going through. Devotion in God and the triumph of good over evil gives all belief that good will always triumph; you should never let the negative energy possess you as it can only destroy you. On that note, happiness is shared across the Hindu community as the message of Shree Rams victory is appreciated. After the fireworks have wrapped the unlit sky, enthusiasm still runs through our blood as we cover ourselves with a warm blanket in the weather in London’s crimson autumn. Wishing all readers of Asian Voice a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous new year.
