Tennis State Champions W
e should be proud of the fact we not only have incredibly talented players in the state of New Mexico but the fact those same players are now on a national level in some cases. The state tournament is becoming increasingly difficult so even seeded players are having to really fight their way through the brackets. The finalist and semi finalist of this year’s state tournament should be incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished... It seems ever more apparent that each year we are seeing greater talent not in just one or two star seniors, but all around and especially in upcoming freshman. I felt like I was walking around watching a high level USTA tournament vs. a high school state tournament. This is going to really inspire younger players as they watch a whole new level tennis.” - JEREMY DYCHE, Director of Tennis, JDTA & former touring pro This year’s state tennis championships brought excellent play from regions around the state during the May showdown at the Jerry Cline complex in Albuquerque. Visit abqsportsmag.com for this year’s winners.

I
t was the night of a lifetime for 15-year old Michael Fanelli.
Fanelli is like a lot of boys who love fast cars. But his kind of fast is a little bit faster than normal. Try Indy 500 fast. And he got to drive. Fanelli, a student at Cleveland High, was the youngest driver in the field at the prestigious 69th “Night Before the 500” Honda USAC Pavement Midget Classic at Lucas Oil Indy 500 Raceway was held on May 24th in Indianapolis. He learned a week before the race that he would have his first opportunity to race at the Indy 500 raceway events and his first time driving a United States Auto Club (USAC) National Midget race. The car Michael drove is owned by John McGerigle, owner of Hilltop Tire and Automotive in Rio Rancho. The previous winners include A.J. Foyt, Johnny Parsons, Mel Kenyon, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kayne and Tony Stewart. Michael qualified 9th and finished the race in 5th place. “What can I say besides wow!! My first USAC midget race and it’s the Historic night before the 500 classic 69th running,” said Fanelli. “I just hung in there for 50 fast laps and we came home contending in the top 5. Huge thanks goes to John McGerigle for letting me drive his midget, it was a rocket ship. I feel very privileged to have gotten the opportunity. I also want to thank Trumen West for all his help in the pits, plus Sydnee Hamblin, my father Frank Fanelli and finally all my amazing sponsors along the way- Hilltop Tire and Automotive, Napa Auto Parts, Kendall Motor Oil, Atlas Pumping, Marty Saiz’s State Farm Agency and Butler Built. My ultimate goal is some day to race in the Indy 500.”
Michael Fanelli
Youngest driver in the 69th Annual “Night Before the 500” National Midget Race BY: MARTY SAIZ
USAC National Midgets are 400 horsepower 4 cylinder motors and the cars are open wheel chassis. It was a 50-lap main event and they only had one yellow flag on lap 11. The track is a big 5/8 of a mile asphalt track near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Michael started racing at 5 years old with the Roadrunner Quarter Midget association. When Michael is not traveling to race the National Midget or his USAC HPD Midget you can find him out at Motiva Speedway west of Albuquerque racing a 360 non-wing 700 horsepower sprint car. To keep up with Michael and his race schedule, fans can “like” his Fan page on Facebook “Michael Fanelli Motorsport” or on twitter at M_fastnelli.

Pete Clinch
Back in the ZONE STAFF REPORT
O
ne of the most decorated coaches in New Mexico soccer history is taking on a new challenge - for the first time in his 35-year coaching career, he’s taking on a newly formed girls U14 club team - Red Devils with Rio Rapids.
“I found it intriguing when I was approached,” says Clinch, “because of the fact that we have players who are not happy and not enjoying the game and were looking for something a little different. When I hear that, when they’re that young, it irks me a little bit because we are losing players out of the game because of it. As I’ve gotten older, I think it’s more about the kids, that they are in a really good environment to enjoy the game and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played and be treated good.” Make no mistake - this is no recreational team. Pete Clinch plays to win - he built a dynasty with Albuquerque Academy. His time with the Chargers spanned 26 years - 19 years as the head coach (12 years with the boys, 7 with the girls) - and resulted in 6 state championships: 5 consecutive with the girls and one with the boys. During that time he led both teams to a career 313-wins. Clinch retired from the Academy in 2013. He was one of the people instrumental in the formation of Rio Vista FC (now Rio Rapids), earning 18 state titles between his time with the Charges and at the club level. He’s coached players to the pinnacle of the sport and assisted more than 150 players in obtaining in excess of 2 million dollars in scholarship money.
Career highlights: ranked 7th in US by MaxPreps, 12 district titles, District Coach of the Year, NM State Coach of the Year 8 times, NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) State Coach of the Year 5 times, Rocky Mountain Coach of the Year 3 times, National Federation of High Schools top 8 finalist for National Coach of the Year. He currently travels conducting specialized training camps nationwide, including at Stanford University. He’s looking at the Red Devil’s first year as a building period. Master the skills, he says, and winning is a by-product. Clinch is a retired professional player (Oxford United, Boston Minutemen) and retired Albuquerque Fire Department EMT. Coach Clinch and the Red Devils hit the field this summer. Clinch plans on staying with this team through high school graduation in order to prep them for collegiate opportunities.

“Triathlon is fun. It can be approached as a fun healthful activity or as a very competitive sport . Multisport training tends to be easier on the body because of the diversity of the three disciplines. Triathletes are very welcoming and kind to beginners and, since it’s an individual sport, triathletes tend to honor each other’s efforts rather than be intensely competitive.” - Jerry Shere, Sport Systems, General Manager.
T
his much-beloved sprint tri has made a May 11, Mother’s Day return to Albuquerque, quickly selling out with more than 500 participants.
“West Mesa Aquatic center was a great venue for the Jay Benson,” says Sherri Perez. “The bike course was well marked and challenging. The pool offered the 50m lanes that allowed for longer distances between turns and probably the best part was the fact that the swim (the last leg of the triathlon) was spectator friendly. With plenty of stadium seating, friends and family could watch as the athletes finished.” Read the full story at abqsportsmag.com.

One Accord Official Sport Tips Brought to you by One Accord Realty Off Side in Soccer:
Soccer
A player is offside if he is nearer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-last opponent (including the goalkeeper) when his team-mate advances him/her the ball. A player is only penalized for being offside if he/she is deemed to be active in the play. So a player can only be called offside if he/she is: 1. In the opposition’s half and gaining any advantage by being in that position. 2. Interfering with play (that is, part of the attacking move). 3. Interfering with an opponent’s ability to defend against the attacking move. Remember, a player cannot be offside from a goal kick, throw in, or corner.

A
full year of year of training has culminated in weeks of state championship play. Countless hours of conditioning - foot skills, cardio, strengthening, stamina. Mental focus and fortitude. The ability to BELIEVE that no opponent whether larger in size or in reputation, will beat you. The hopes and skills of thousands of youth soccer players took to the windy, lush green fields of the Bernalillo soccer complex as the facility played host again to this year’s state club soccer championships. There were few blowout championship games. And while soccer can at times be a subjective sport, there were a lot of good plays and good sportsmanship. ABQ Sports congratulations all of this year’s State Cup Champions and will follow their progress at Regionals, being held in New Mexico later this month.

Do what you love. Love what you do. By Daniel Lenzi, Club Manager & Personal Trainer at Defined Fitness
W
ould you like to wake up every day and help prevent diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other serious life-threatening conditions? I did, so I made the decision to join one of the most rewarding professions and become a personal trainer. There are many benefits to being a personal trainer. I am able to combine the things I enjoy the most: exercise and helping people achieve and exceed their fitness goals while teaching them how to live a healthier lifestyle. I have worked with all age groups, from training kids seven years old and up in the Parisi Speed School, to senior citizens. Although all have different goals in mind to reach, it is very rewarding to help them reach those goals. The flexible work schedule that personal training allows you to have is also a big plus. While there are many benefits to being a personal trainer, it takes a lot more than just a love of exercise to be effective and successful at this profession. A person must possess certain character traits. They must have an enthusiastic and outgoing personality, the ability to listen to the client’s needs, a great deal of patience and understanding, and the ability to interact with different types of personalities. I am required to wear many different hats: from a drill sergeant and coach, a motivator, to a friend to lean on.
A good personal trainer also needs to be knowledgeable about different health issues and how to work with people who have certain physical injuries or limitations. For example, a person with diabetes, a heart condition, or arthritis needs a different type of workout than a person with no or few health issues. Also, in this industry, there is always a new fitness craze or “the next big thing” so I it’s my job to be knowledgeable in all these areas. I am able to develop programs that incorporate new techniques but are still safe and effective. At the end of the day, I love what I do. It is very rewarding to know that I am able to make a real impact on my clients’ well being, whether it is helping them lose weight, overcome health issues, train for a competition or just become stronger.

t was the final game of the state club rugby championship.
Down 10-0 at the half to the Albuquerque Pumas, it appeared to be a miserable way for Westside Ruckus to cap an undefeated season. “(Coach) Monica and I were sweating bullets that this would be our first loss!” says co-coach Maddie Baltz. “We came back after the half with determination and a clear head. Finally, Darby Pruitt, 11th grade, pushed through a very strong Puma defense for a solid 5 points.” Read the full story at abqsportsmag.com

JAKE WILLIAMS RIDING to the Top BY: SUMIKO CORLEY
“Win or lose I knew that I was not going to let it be a one point match. I was going to win big or lose big. I wanted it to be exciting.” - Jake Williams NAIA National Champ
PHOTOS: COURTESY, ROSANN WILLIAMS
Exciting it was. Williams says he knew the victory was his just 60 seconds into the first period of the final match at the March 8 NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) national championship in Topeka, Kansas. “My opponent got the first take down,” says Williams, “it was the only time he would score during the match. I could hear him breathing hard and I knew at that point it was over that I had this.” He took the match 9-2 in the 149 pound weight class, capping a stellar junior season at Cumberland University in Tennessee. He won his last 10 matches, 36-2 during the spring semester. Read the full story at abqsportsmag.com
