In this allegorical picture book about the hardships of immigration, a young rabbit named Pancho eagerly awaits his Papa's return. Papa Rabbit left two years ago when the rain did not come and the crops could not grow. He and many other animals from the Rancho went far away north to find work in the great carrot and lettuce fields to earn money for their families. When Papa does not appear on the night he is supposed to return home, Pancho decides he must go find his father.
