With great skill, the baya weavers construct their nests from thin blades of grass. The stalks are bitten off and then used for weaving while still fresh. After a short time, the tropical sun dries the green blades and the nest hardens and changes color.

The garden cross spider fastens its large orblike web near the ground. The web often consists of more than thirty radii and has a closely woven hub. The adult spiders can weave webs with a diameter of up to a foot and a half (fifty centimeters). As many as 1,500 connection points can be noted in the design, which has a preestablished blueprint. In the morning dew, the spiderwebs seem as though they are laden with small glass balls.
