Published to accompany the V&A’s major autumn exhibition, Opera: Passion, Power and Politics 30 September 2017 – 25 February 2018 Opera is traditionally regarded as an elitist art form far removed from reality by its fantastical plots and melodramatic divas. This book shows that beneath the opulent sets and sumptuous costumes, opera is very much a product of its time. Like all the great narrative arts, it draws on essential human experiences to create a form that can be endlessly reinvented to reflect a changing society. Focusing on seven opera premieres in seven distinct cultural landscapes, with additional essays by contemporary practitioners including Antonio Pappano and Plácido Domingo, the book culminates in the international explosion of opera in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The seven cities and premieres are: Venice (Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, 1642); London (Handel’s Rinaldo, 1711); Vienna (Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, 1786); Milan (Verdi’s Nabucco, 1842); Paris (Wagner’s Tannhäuser, 1861); Dresden (Strauss’ Salome, 1905) and St Petersburg (Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, 1934). Kate Bailey is Senior Curator of Design and Scenography in the Theatre and Performance department at the V&A.

Government School of Design was moved to a more permanent home, along with its teaching-collection. Opened in 1857, this was now re-named the South Kensington Museum. As the Museum became established, a further national benefit was identified, which was to be social: the director Henry Cole promoted the Museum’s educational value to the general public, offering a leisure amenity to which all were entitled. Cole also calculated that this paternalism would have a useful economic impact, which was the deliberate development of a more discerning consumer society in Britain. The creation of the South Kensington Museum was therefore a corporate national project, amalgamating art theory, industrial investment, consumer behaviour mechanism and popular edification. 124

Conceived as a work of art in itself, the V&A is the most elaborately designed and decorated museum in Britain. This book reveals how its first Director, Henry Cole, commissioned leading Victorian artists such as Frederic Leighton, G.F. Courts) was built for the second iteration of the Crystal Palace (reconstructed on a more permanent basis in Sydenham in south London, opened in 1854), and these were to be equally exemplary. The Courts were a series of scaleddown composite “reconstructions” of admired monuments.8 Together, the modern structure of the Crystal Palace and the careful historic referencing of the Fine Arts Courts encapsulated the recommended doctrine of British Design Reform. Tellingly, several of these re-creations depended upon recent British exploration, close study and publication of non-Western sites: Austin Henry Layard at Nineveh in Iraq, Owen Jones at the Alhambra and Joseph Bonomi in Egypt.9 On the face of it, Iran was absent from this account; however the Assyrian Court, as laid out by James Fergusson, was a composite admixture of Layard and Rassam’s Assyrian palace finds from northern Iraq.10 With the profits earned from the Great Exhibition, a large estate of land was purchased in South Kensington, close to Hyde Park. By the time the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations was held in London in 1851, an increasingly vocal consensus had been reached about the standards of industrial design in Britain, and the consequent need to restructure the design education system. The call for British Design Reform had long been made by an influential lobby of art commentators, each of whom was now directly linked to the administration of the Exhibition itself: Henry Cole, Richard Redgrave, Matthew Digby Wyatt, Owen Jones, James Wild, James Fergusson and others, including Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert. Earlier discussions had already considered this issue at government level, at a dedicated parliamentary Select Committee in 1836.1 It had then been decided to establish a national network of Government Schools of Art, equipped with a central teaching collection.2 As a hugely popular national moment, the Great Exhibition provided publicity, validation and significant new funding for this ongoing reform movement, leading to the establishment in 1857 of a permanent site for both School and Museum, in South Kensington. Following the Great Exhibition, the Museum concentrated upon building a global reference-collection for British designers to study. Acquired primarily to address contemporary national concerns, artworks were therefore not sought for their original historical or cultural contexts.

Today the Victoria and Albert Museum holds extensive and renowned collections of Iranian art, spanning at least twelve centuries of Iran’s sophisticated cultural history. These objects range from archaeological finds to architectural salvage, from domestic furnishings and drinking vessels to design archives. Most of this diverse material was purchased in the late nineteenth century, over a few decades – roughly between 1873 and 1893 – during a specific period of contact between Victorian Britain and Qajar Iran.

FASHION PERSPECTIVES – E-BOOKS

DIARIES

A history of fashion from the perspective of those who were there: the V&A’s growing series of fashion e-books put the story of style into context.

The Gardener’s Diary

The World of Carmel Snow

First published in 1937, The Gardener’s Diary was both designed and illustrated by the renowned British graphic designer Edward Bawden (1903–1989). This perpetual week-to-view diary comprises beautiful horticultural block prints and helpful weekly reminders from William Cobbett’s English Gardener (1827). Plenty of space is given for charting your garden’s progress, recording when plants bloom and noting weather conditions.

Edward Bawden

Carmel Snow with Mary Louise Aswell

Carmel Snow (1887 – 1961), the notorious publishing rival of Vogue editor Edna Woolman Chase, left Vogue in 1932 to become fashion editor, then chief editor of Harper’s Bazaar. This vibrant memoir recalls her passionate career. Determined and opinionated, Snow had a brilliant eye for new talent: she hired Diana Vreeland and Richard Avedon, commissioned editorial from Truman Capote, and applauded Balenciaga’s first collection in a silent ‘hate filled room’. A woman of buoyant and unlimited energy, she rarely slept or ate, but seldom missed a three-martini lunch.

Eric Ravilious Diary Eric Ravilious (1903–42), painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver, is one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. Originally produced in 1933 by the Kynoch Press, this perpetual week-to-view diary features beautiful wood block engravings by Ravilious on every spread. Delightful illustrations represent the changing seasons, from roaring fires and snowy vignettes for the winter months, to strawberries in the summer, bringing to life the simplicity of English rural countryside. Beautifully designed, this is the perfect gift for gardeners and nature lovers as well as fans of Ravilious’s work.

Can I Help You, Madam? Ethyle Campbell

The working life of a woman in retail in the 1930s was tough, but not beyond the no-nonsense Ethyle Campbell. Quite unlike any other book about the rag trade in the 1930s, this semiautobiographical account of Campbell’s time as a fashion buyer for a London department store rings with her slangy informative banter as she plies her trade, often hilariously, between the shop floor, the couture houses of Paris and factories of New York. The enigmatic Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) is a legendary figure in the history of twentieth-century fashion. His name is a byword for clothes executed to the highest standards and characterized by their sculptural quality, the deft manipulation of textiles and dramatic colour.

Shown here for the first time outside the attic in which they were stored for generations are more than 200 perfectly preserved garments and accessories, complemented by archival objects, family photographs, and letters, spanning almost 150 years. The book is packed with evocative descriptions of the garments’ original owners; when the clothes were made or bought; and even where they were worn—all by members of the Roddis family of Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion offers a thorough introduction to the couturier’s fashion philosophy, design and business practices, with particular reference to garments in the V&A collection. It places his extraordinary output in the context of his time and provides an overview of his lasting legacy.

MARIANO FORTUNY HIS LIFE AND WORK Guillermo de Osma This book provides a complete and authoritative account of the visionary designer Mario Fortuny’s life. Best known for his rich, innovative textiles and opulent dresses, Fortuny (1871–1949) was also an accomplished painter, etcher and photographer, as well as a designer of theatrical sets, costumes and lighting. His spectacular creativity has acquired almost mythological status in the canon of early twentieth-century Aestheticism. Born into a renowned family of artists, critics, architects and craftsmen, Fortuny beneftted from an eclectic artistic education. He supplemented this with his own ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe, eventually settling in Venice to establish a studio in the Palazzo Orfei. There, he began to create work that rejected the hierarchies and barriers between the arts, producing furniture, textiles and stage designs for pioneering opera and ballet productions – all of which is shown here.

M ARIANO

FORTUNY

The hand-dyed, pleated ‘Delphos’ robe is perhaps the quintessential Fortuny creation. Its origins were founded in classical art, progressive theatrical costume design and the liberal principles of ‘rational dress’. The patented design proved an unprecedented success, favoured by customers from the avant-garde art world such as Isadora Duncan, and wealthy American socialites alike. Immortalized by Proust in Remembrance of Things Past, the fgure-skimming robe was considered shocking on its frst appearance in 1907, but examples inspired by Fortuny’s original design still regularly appear on red carpets today.

S TYLE AND SATIRE FA S H I ON I N P R I N T 1777 –19 2 7 Catherine Flood and Sarah Grant

Catherine Flood is a curator in the Word & Image Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her publications include British Posters: Advertising, Art & Activism (V&A, 2012) and, co-edited with Gavin Grindon, Disobedient Objects (V&A, 2014). She has curated displays on protest design, propaganda posters and nineteenth-century print culture.

From the sky-high coiffures of Georgian Britain to outsize Victorian crinolines, from flimsy Regency fashions to the languid silhouette of 1920s ‘flappers’, Style and Satire tells the story of European fashion, and its most extreme trends, through a selection of lavish fashion plates and glorious satirical prints.

Presented together here for the first time, these two genres describe an emerging, vibrant fashion culture, while themselves evolving, first through the pages of the mass-produced Victorian periodical, and then as vibrant, stencilled images in luxurious publications of the 1920s and ’30s.

Beautifully printed, hand-coloured fashion plates first appeared in Britain and France in the late eighteenth century. In the same period (and often by the same artists), satirical prints gloried in the absurdities of fashion.

Lavishly illustrated and rigorously researched, Style and Satire presents a fresh and original history of the fashionable silhouette through the lens of print culture – a vital and witty addition to every fashion victim’s library.

KALAMKARI TEMPLE HANGINGS

KALAMKARI TEMPLE HANGINGS

Anna L. Dallapiccola has a PhD in Indian Art History and a Habilitation (D.Litt) from the University of Heidelberg (Germany). She was Professor of Indian art at the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University from 1971 to 1995. In 1991, she was appointed Honorary Professor at Edinburgh University. She worked in India with the Vijayanagara Research project from 1984 to 2011. She has presented papers at a number of international conferences and written and edited many books. Her most recent publications are South Indian Paintings: Catalogue of the British Museum Collection (London, 2010) and The Great Platform at Vijayanagara (New Delhi, 2010). She is presently collaborating with Anila Verghese, Mumbai, on a research project concerning the art of the Vijayanagara successor states in southern India.

THE FABRIC OF INDIA

This sumptuous book is a wide-ranging yet accessible overview of the making, design and use of textiles from all over the Indian subcontinent. India’s unique natural resources combined with millennia of ingenuity and innovation have created an astonishing array of fabrics: almost every region developed its own textile specialities, whether in weave, dye, print or embroidery – and sometimes a combination of several of these. The fi rst truly comprehensive book on the subject, The Fabric of India explores in great detail the materials and techniques used in their manufacture and discusses centres of production, patronage, markets and designs, showing in lavish illustrations how India came to be synonymous with cloth – and colour.

Kalamkari Temple Hangings The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has the world’s most important collection of nineteenth-century temple hangings from South India. They were commissioned by Hindu temples and monasteries (maths) and by individuals for religious use. They were produced by the kalamkari process of hand-drawing, mordant-dyeing and painting, a complex technique that reached its highest expression in South India. The nineteen pieces in this book are all from the V&A collection. This is the first time they have been fully illustrated with complete translations of all their Telugu and Tamil inscriptions. Each piece is accompanied by a summary of the story it tells – whether a version of the Ramayana or an epic celebrating a local hero - as well as a detailed ‘frame-by-frame’ analysis of the narrative as it unfolds on the textile. The majority of these pieces are from coastal Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu, with one extraordinary Ramayana hanging included from Sri Lanka. All date from the 19th century except for one remarkable 20th-century hanging from Srikalahasti which depicts the life of Christ in the style of a traditional Hindu kalamkari. Bringing this group of hangings together for the first time gives the opportunity for a new look at the remarkable variety of regional styles in which they were made, and allows the work of some master craftsmen whose names are now known to us to be celebrated for the first time.

BEJEWELLED TREASURES Tis beautiful book explores a selection Collection. It features over 100 objects made in, or inspired by, India, dating from the seventeenth century to the present day. Among the highlights, reproduced with specially commissioned photography, are delicate Mughal jades, vividly coloured enamels, famous jewels designed by Cartier and Paul Iribe, and a beautiful peacock ornament bought in Paris by a Sikh maharaja. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the book also discusses three major pieces from the British Royal collection, including a stunning jewelled bird from the throne of Tipu Sultan, ruler of the South Indian kingdom of Mysore. fsmanship of traditional Indian jewellers has inspired modern and contemporary masters – such as Cartier, JAR and Bhagat – in Europe and India, and their work is also explored here.
