I recently asked a number of friends and neighbors (most of whom were at least twenty years older than I am) to each share one important lesson they’ve learned in their long life. The answers were varied and wise, but the most poignant insight came from a former nurse:
She said, “Be kind and always say nice things about other people.”
What would the world look like if for just one day everyone followed that advice? For twenty four hours, the following would disappear:
· Conflict and aggression
· Bullying and harassment
· Stress and anxiety
· Discrimination and prejudice
· Negative media and gossip
· Self-criticism and negative self-talk
· Tensions in international relations
· Environmental neglect
Can you imagine such a world? No war. No hate. No polarization . . . It’s worth trying.
This spring, Familius is publishing a number of wonderful books, videos, and articles to help your family be happy. One book in particular is called Kindness Rocks by the founder of the Kindness Rocks Project. Our challenge to you, our Familius family, is to be kind and only say kind things about other people. Try it for one hour, then one day, then one week, then one month, then one year. The Dalai Lama once said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”
We are confident that this simple but important challenge will make the world a better place. Why? Because kindness rocks!

She is the award-winning author of GardensAreForGrowing (Familius 2022) and God MadeYouToo (WorthyKids 2022), with more titles on the way.
Laurel Alyesworth
As an introverted kid growing up in Vermont, drawing came naturally to Laurel Aylesworth. Instead of going to the mall like most teenagers, you would find her in her room drawing scenes from Lord of the Rings or copying her favorite characters from Elf Quest comics. Later, her career path naturally led to graphic design, but something was missing (namely, Elves and magic). She found her calling as an illustrator after becoming a mother and hence, wading knee-deep in picture books from the library.
