SelfMadeHero Spring 2015

Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. We are proud to bring readers visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. This spring sees the release of the most hotly anticipated graphic novel of 2015, The Sculptor by Scott McCloud. The bestselling author of Understanding Comics returns with a spellbinding urban fable about a wish, a deal with death, the price of art, and the value of life. Neil Gaiman has said of McCloud’s long-awaited magnum opus, “The Sculptor is the best graphic novel I’ve read in years. It’s about art and love and why we keep on trying. It will break your heart.” After the success of Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley, we’re delighted to be bringing the work of another high-profile North American graphic novelist to UK readers. Spring also sees the release of two wonderful books in translation: our Art Masters series continues with Pablo, Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie’s stunning portrait of Picasso’s life among the bohemians of Montmartre, and Aama, Vol. 3: The Desert of Mirrors, the latest instalment of Frederik Peeters’ breathtaking science fiction series. We also publish Andrzej Klimowski and Danusia Schejbal’s latest collaboration, the autobiographical graphic novel Behind the Curtain; I. N. J. Culbard’s adaptation of Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow, a hugely influential book that is enjoying a renaissance thanks to the hit HBO show True Detective; and a collection of album review illustrations by Run Wrake, End of A Century, edited and introduced by broadcaster and journalist Andrew Collins. We love to hear from our readers, so be sure to let us know what you think @selfmadehero

NME, turning his talent to documenting one of the most exciting periods in pop music history. Drawing on his influences – early hand-drawn animation, Dada, Pop Art and punk graphics – Run Wrake developed a unique, bold and contemporary style to capture a vibrant musical culture with a perceptiveness and wit that was all his own. The illustrations collected here are a testament to the versatility of Run Wrake’s art: End of a Century pictures musicians, good and bad, from the heady days of the nineties, from guitar-driven grunge and Britpop acts to ageing folk musicians and manufactured pop stars. Run Wrake studied at the Chelsea College of Art and at the Royal College of Art before going on to become one of the most distinguished graphic designers, illustrators and animators of his generation. After being diagnosed with cancer in November 2011, he died in October 2012, aged 48.

J

ulie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie’s awardwinning graphic biography of Pablo Picasso

captures the prolific and eventful life of one of the world’s best-loved artists. Pablo takes in Picasso’s early life among the bohemians of Monmartre, his turbulent relationship with Fernande, and the development of a career that began in penury, continued on through scandal and frustration,

and reached its climax with the advent of Cubism and modern art. This stunning graphic biography shows how Picasso’s art developed through his friendship with the poets Max Jacob and Guillaume Apollinaire, the painter Georges Braque, as well as his great rival Henri Matisse. Julie Birmant is a former Director of the prestigious Brussels film school INSAS. She writes plays and produces

Clément Oubrerie is an acclaimed artist. His first graphic novel, Aya of Yop City, won the First Book Award at Angoulême, the Children’s Africana Book Award, and the Glyph Award.

n 1907, the French battleship Iéna was destroyed when

a nitrocellulose-based weapon propellant it was carrying

became unstable with age and self-ignited, killing 120 people. A year later, La Bonne Auberge became the

earliest-known pornographic film, depicting an intimate encounter between a French soldier and an innkeeper’s daughter. Like all films at the time it was made with a highly combustible nitrocellulose-based film stock. Loosely based on historical events, The Good Inn follows the lone survivor of the Iéna explosion as he makes his way through the French countryside. He falls into a strange love affair with an innkeeper’s daughter and, even more deeply, into a volatile counter-universe where war and art exist side by side. From Pixies frontman Black Francis, in collaboration with writer Josh Frank and artist Steven Appleby, The Good Inn is a bold and visually arresting novel about art, conflict, and the origins of a certain type of cinema. Black Francis is the frontman of US rock band Pixies. His songs have inspired musicians from Thom Yorke to Kurt Cobain. Josh Frank is the author of the Pixies biography

Fool the World. Steven Appleby is a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. The author of over 20 books, he has also worked in TV, radio and musical theatre.
