2023

Welcome to our 2023 list, from the team at Magic Cat.

This year marks our third year in business, and we are delighted to be launching our partnersip with Thames and Hudson as we grow our list in Australia and New Zealand.

In a difficult world, books are like lighthouses; they show us how to navigate difficult situations, and they bring us closer to the people and places we are trying to reach. Unplug and unwind with The Book of Forgotten Skills – a book that is packed full of low-cost, feel-good fun; enjoy a good, old-fashioned joke with Knock Knock; learn how inclusivity, sustainability and equality thrived in the ancient world with Lessons From Our Ancestors; and finally, snuggle up for a special bedtime with The Christmas Songbook, a sumptuous sound book with 8 classic carols.

With books for every age from 0 to 12, our list and our team show how much we believe in the magic of reading our way through life.

‘AN ESSENTIAL MENTAL-HEALTH HANDBOOK FOR THE NEXT GENERATION’
- Vanessa Nakate
Featuring a toolkit at the end of each step to help readers grow with the knowledge.

In the same way that people from the same family or friendship

group have very different ways of dealing with the same

thing, everyone has their own ways of dealing with the climate

crisis. Arguments can happen when people don't understand each other's ideas, feelings and reactions. Sometimes it's helpful

to remember that other people's coping mechanisms might

be different from yours. If other people seem to be in denial,

that's just their way of dealing with it. But it doesn't have to

be yours. If you suffer from eco-anxiety, it's because your mind isn't letting you run away from the problem.

YOUR ECO-ANXIETY IS GIVING YOU A HINT. IT’S TELING YOU TO JOIN IN THE EFFORT TO SAVE OUR PLANET.

WE

crisis are legitimate. What's more, they have the potential to

help you become part of the solution. Don't be hard on yourself.

You should be proud of your feelings. They show that you are a

eco-worrier to eco-warrior - but you have to be worried in the first place to make it!

STEP 1 :

Self-care practices to ease your eco-anxiety

FOCUS ON THINGS THAT BRING YOU JOY

While it might be true to say that eco-anxiety is helpful for triggering action, it's also true that a love of life is a great motivator when it comes to preserving our world. So make time for the things you love - it'll make you a more effective eco-ally.

TALK TO SOMEONE YOU TRUST

It's awful to deal with bad feelings alone. Speak to someone you feel comfortable with and who will give you time to express your thoughts. Maybe choose a quiet moment, or tell them in advance that you need to have a proper chat about something that's upsetting you.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF

You don't have to be Greta Thunberg to make a difference. Even she probably doesn't feel like 'Greta Thunberg' all the time! Nobody's perfect, and the fact that you're worried at all shows you are the beginning of your journey towards becoming the best eco-ally you can be.

LEARN MORE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Learn about the things you can do to make difference, however big or small. We can often alleviate a fear of the unknown by educating ourselves about the situation in question. Knowledge is power, after all.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Next time you watch the news and feel your heart speed up or your palms start sweating, check in with yourself and say, Thank you, body, for reminding me how precious the world is. Please trust that I am doing what I can for now.

well-informed, empathic person who cares about the state ofhelptheworld.Wedon'twanttogetridofyoureco-anxiety,butto eco-actionyouthinkofitinsteadaseco-compassion,eco-understanding, and eco-determination. It's a small switch from STEP 1 e

STEP 1 :

1 VALIDATE YOUR ECO-ANXIETY

Whenever you feel eco-anxiety kick in, whether it's mental or physical, remind yourself that's it's a perfectly rational response to a real problem. Your eco-anxiety is a sign that your ideas and emotions are in tune.

2 REJECT DENIAL

You can't unknow what you already know. Once you've acknowledged that there's a problem, the only way is forwards. Denial might seem to work well for some people, but for those of us with eco-anxiety, it isn't really an option. . . and that's OK!

3 USE YOUR FEELINGS TO SPARK ACTION

Validating your feelings is the first step, and taking action is the second. Without action all the validation in the world could seem a little empty. Of course, you don't have to act straight away and maybe you're doing quite a bit already. Rather than piling on more pressure, you could remind yourself of the actions you're already taking.

4 FOSTER DETERMINATION

If you set yourself a realistic goal, like 'to live as responsibly and sustainably as possible', then you will increase your chances of achieving it. Make sure you forgive the odd deviation or slip up. It's not possible to be eco-perfect!

5 BE TOLERANT OF OTHERS

It's easy to get annoyed at people who have a bit of catching up to do with regard to the climate crisis. Belittling someone for having a different opinion to yours won't convince them to change their mind, but a thoughtful discussion might.

17 f

e Step 5 f

Reclaim Your Power

THE CLIMATE CRISIS CAN MAKE US FEEL CONFUSED AND POWERLESS. BUT IF WE CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK, WE CAN GET OUR POWER BACK!

Thinking about the scale of climate change can make us feel helpless as individuals - and individual action may seem like a drop in the ocean in comparison to big businesses. But what you do matters. I want you to discard the belief that you're powerless: you're incredibly powerful.

What can I do to feel ambitious?

Try this exercise to help your concentration and feel more calm. Sit with your hands close enough together that each fingertip can touch its opposite on the other hand. Learn how to make sense of your feelings.
This book has been curated by a mindfulness expert for early readers, bringing together 30 exercises to help them identify, understand and communicat e their feelings.

It’s perfectly natural to feel angry from time to time – everybody does. The important thing is that we don’t let our anger hurt anyone else, or ourselves. But that doesn’t mean we should keep it bottled up inside – that might make it more likely to bubble up, like lava from a volcano! Sometimes, it helps to talk to someone about your angry feelings, but if you’re not ready to do that you could try drawing or colouring how you feel instead.

What can I do when I feel angry?

Take a piece of paper and a chunky crayon in whatever colour feels right for your mood. Cover the paper in pictures or even scribbles. Notice your breath as you do this. Do you feel different after you’ve finished?

Master the art of knot tying and you are half way to learning one of the most essential skills in life. Knot tying is as old as humankind. The good news is that by learning just a few of the basic knots, you can secure almost anything for any purpose.

CONSENT

Your body is YOUR body. Your hair, your elbows, your belly button, your toes.

Your friend’s body is THEIR body. Their hair, their elbows, their belly button, their toes.

You decide what actions are OK for you and your body, and your friends decide what actions are OK for them and their bodies.

Asking for consent is a way to ask others what actions are OK for their bodies.

Representation

Ask for consent when you want to touch someone’s hair, elbow, belly button or toes.

They give consent when they say, yes.

If they say or show no, that means stop.

If they don’t say anything, that means stop, too.

We all get to decide what we want for our own bodies!

Please can I touch your hair?

No. I don't want you to touch my hair.

Representation is the way that someone is shown or described. We can see representations of people in books, TV shows, movies and toys. When we see people like us represented, we might feel excited.

When we see people like us represented in the same ways over and over again, we might feel disappointed. And when we don’t see ourselves at all, we might feel invisible.

KINDNESS

Kindness is being thoughtful, helpful and friendly. When we think about kindness, we usually think about being kind to others.

Kindness is sharing a snack with a friend. Helping a neighbour.

Representation is important.

Start to look around with some extra attention.

What kinds of dolls do you see?

Who do you see in books? What are they doing?

On TV, what kinds of families do you see?

Do you notice any kinds of people missing?

190

Taking care of someone who is sick.

What is one way you could surprise someone with kindness today?

It’s wonderful when all kinds of people are represented in ways that feel right and true.

Treating ourselves with kindness is important, too.

We can be kind when we talk to ourselves. We can be kind by taking care of our bodies.

We can be kind by doing things that make us happy.

What is one way you could show kindness to yourself today?

This EXCITING and LYRICAL mountain-quest story shows children that real treasure comes from friendship.

Hare sets off to find the treasure. On the way, she finds a bear, who is lonely and desperate to make friends and a very shy blackbird. The three new friends battle their way to the top, only to find that the chest is empty except for a puddle. But when they peer inside, they see their own reflections. Bear marvels at how he now has friends and Blackbird no longer recognises himself – he’s got so confident! This bighearted story teaches children that sometimes life-changing moments happen when we least expect them, and true ‘treasure’ comes from friendship.

The Joy Of Chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley

Afterwards, we decided to compare notes, but I quickly realised that he did not speak any English and I even less Hungarian. No matter. We sat and started reviewing the game, and at certain points, we would stop to suggest other moves we thought might have been interesting to play.

Using only hand gestures, facial expressions, laughs and shakes of the head, we were able to easily communicate...

The language that we shared was the language of chess. That ability to share my passion with someone I cannot even speak to is one of the many reasons why I take joy from chess.

Chess has been spreading joy for over 1,500 years. It has lasted this long, I think, because of the simple yet enchanting shapes and movements of the various pieces.

The aim of the game is to defeat the enemy king, and to do that one has to know how to properly use the rooks, knights, bishops, pawns and the mighty queen.

Each piece is special, and moves in a magical way:

The rook moves in a straight line up, down or sideways.

The queen moves like both the bishop and the rook.

The bishop moves diagonally.

The knight moves in an ‘L’ shape.

The pawns move usually one square at a time, always forward like soldiers marching to war.

The king moves only one step in any direction and usually looks for safety in its castle unless needed in the end for battle.

The word checkmate signals a winner. It comes from an old Persian word meaning, ‘the king is helpless’.

july
Maurice’s Chess Moves
Chess means everything to me. Many years ago I played against a chess master from Hungary. We battled for hours, creating tricks and traps that we hoped the other person would fall for, until finally, the game ended in a tie.
