While many people are familiar with aspects of South Asian textiles – Mughal velvets, chintzes for the Western markets or rural embroideries, for example – this book aims to surprize, inspire, delight and inform readers with an extraordinary range of material, much of it being published for the first time. From ancient survivals to contemporary couture these objects reflect the richness and dynamism of India’s heritage. As well as presenting great historical masterpieces, the importance and variety of basic fibres – silk, cotton, wool – from which Indian textiles are traditionally made are emphasized, and the remarkable techniques of weaving, printing, dyeing and embroidery that have lead them to be prized across the world are illustrated with specially commissioned photography. Rosemary Crill is a Senior Curator in the Asian Department at the V&A.

Featuring 100 objects, the book examines the origins of these precious artefacts from the treasury of the Mughal emperors and the courts of Hindustan. The author also looks at the influence that India had on avantgarde European jewellery made by Cartier and other leading houses and concludes with contemporary pieces made by JAR (hailed as the Fabergé of our times) and Viren Bhagat, which are inspired by a creative fusion of Mughal motifs and Art Deco ‘Indian’ designs. LONDON COUTURE 1923–1975: British Luxury Edwina Ehrman & Amy de la Haye, eds London Couture is the first book to examine, in detail, the luxurious garments produced by the rarefied London couture industry – from lavish ballgowns to sharply tailored suits and spectacular court dress – as well as the designers who conceived them, their clients and the prestigious publications that disseminated and promoted the ‘London Look’ to an international audience.

The Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers (INCSOC; the Society) was incorporated by the Board of Trade on 6 January 1942, in the third year of the Second World War, and dissolved in 1975.1 Variously known as ISLFD and INCSOC, its aims were threefold: to maintain and develop the reputation of London as a centre of fashion; to collaborate with groups of fabric and other manufacturers, and with companies, firms and individuals, with a view to increasing the prestige of British fashions, and promoting the sales of British fashions in both home and overseas markets; and to assist fashion designers by protecting their original designs; enabling them to exchange information to their mutual advantage, arranging dates for their respective showings; fostering the professional and trade interests of persons engaged in creating British fashions; developing the standards of skilled workmanship[,] and representing their views to government and trade bodies and to the Press.2
Margaret Havinden’s previously unstudied papers shed new light on the genesis of the group, the introduction of associate members in 1955, and on forerunner The Fashion Group of Great Britain, to which many members of INCSOC had belonged.6 Havinden (née Sangster, 1895–1974) [LC02-021] was instrumental in the formation of the Society, and its first chairman (March 1941 to April 1942). She was a director of W.S. Crawford Limited, with special responsibility for the fashion industry, which she promoted assiduously throughout her career. The Hyder and Havinden papers have here been supplemented with other archival material, commentary in the press and references to INCSOC in memoirs and diaries. The founding members of The Incorporated Society were London-based couturiers. They created seasonal collections of original designs, from which private clients could select models to be custom-made, and overseas companies could purchase models for sale, reproduction or adaptation (see Kim, pp. xx–xx; Lassig, pp.xx–xx)[LC02-010]. They employed highly skilled staff, who used labour-intensive hand-sewing techniques to create perfectly fitting, immaculately finished garments. Given the prestige of couture, it is appropriate to ask why the group decided to call themselves ‘fashion designers’ rather than couturiers.

A wealth of visual material supports the extensive, original research – from beautiful features by celebrated photographer Norman Parkinson to the elegant illustrations of Francis Marshall. Previously unseen garments are illustrated throughout the book, alongside historical photography that documents the houses of the great designers, their favoured fabrics and their most glamorous clients, including Queen Elizabeth II, Margot Fonteyn, and many stars of stage and screen. Edwina Erhman is a curator of textiles and fashion at the V&A. Amy de la Haye is Rootstein Hopkins Professor of Dress History and Curatorship at London College of Fashion.
This essay draws primarily on the Lilian Hyder Archive, which is housed in the V&A’s Archive of Art and Design.3 (Dorothy) Lilian Hyder (1897–1987) was the organizing secretary of INCSOC from around September 1941 to February 1954. (Her successor Ann Ryan was in post from 1956 to 1960. Rosemary Borland, née Chubb, b. 1925, of prominent British advertising agency W.S. Crawford Limited, ran INCSOC in the interim.) Hyder’s papers include two Minute Books which together cover the period 6 January 1942 to 2 September 1959.4 Some pages have been cut from the first volume, with two significant losses: in 1943, and 1944–5.5 In addition, with no known surviving documents from the last 16 years (1960–75) of the Incorporated Society's existence, and dwindling contemporary media interest, it has been impossible to reconstruct this lost history.
The answer is unrecorded but the decision was probably political. The wartime government supported the formation of INCSOC, wanting to promote the export of couture clothes, and the fine British textiles from which they were made, to raise hard currency (particularly US dollars), for the war effort. The government was also exploring ways to champion London as a fashion centre with its own identity when the war was over. Ministers realized that they needed to work with a group.7 Couture, however, was viewed as a luxury and, from June 1940, the government had introduced measures to reduce the domestic consumption of luxuries in order to divert raw materials and manpower towards exports and war production.8 Clothes rationing was introduced on 1 June 1941. Forming a society of couturiers under these circumstances could have been misunderstood as promoting high fashion for the few. The term ‘fashion designer’ was more neutral, while serving to distinguish the couturiers from London’s ‘court dressmakers’ (see de la Haye, pp.xx–xx). However, INCSOC’s role of promoting couture specifically is implicit in its aim ‘to assist fashion designers by protecting their original designs’.9 (Most British ‘dressmakers’, and all wholesalers, were thought to adapt and
Expert authors from around the world have delved into museum collections, as well as the archives of prestigious designers, textile suppliers and fashionable journals, to bring together this pioneering study of the London couture houses of the twentieth century. The full breadth of London’s offering is examined, from royal favourite Norman Hartnell to pioneer Charles James, and prestigious houses such as Lucile, Worth and Hardy Amies. The ancillary dressmaking trades in London are also considered, as are the international markets for London couture, and the impact of royal dress on high-end fashion.

Christian Dior rocketed to fame with his first collection in 1947 when the ‘New Look’ took the world by storm. This charming and modest autobiography gives a fascinating and detailed insight into the workings of a great fashion house, while revealing the private man behind the high-profile establishment. It is also a unique portrait of the classic Paris haute couture of the 1950s and offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes. Dior details his childhood in Normandy, the family and friends closest to him, his most difficult years and sudden success, as well as his sources of inspiration and creative processes. Christian Dior (1905–1957) opened his own couture house in 1946, revolutionizing fashion with the ‘New Look’ and was created a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1950.

INDIAN TEMPLE HANGINGS Anna L. Dallapiccola The V&A has the world’s most important collection of nineteenth-century temple hangings from South India, but only one of the smaller pieces has ever been published. For the first time these amazing objects are documented and made public here. The hangings are of two main types: large narrative pieces from Andhra Pradesh which tell stories from the Ramayana, the exploits of Krishna or tales connected with South Indian deities, and smaller pieces from Tamil Nadu. A single extraordinary Ramayana hanging from Sri Lanka is also included. All of the pieces are illustrated in their entirety, along with copious details that highlight the remarkable skill and regional styles of the narrative artists. Each is accompanied by a brief summary of its story, but the full ‘frame-by-frame’ narrative is described in a separate illustrated catalogue section. This will also provide translations of all the Telugu and Tamil inscriptions that accompany the narratives, translated especially for this book. John Aldridge, painter and designer of wallpapers (printed, like Bawden’s papers, by Cole & Son as the ‘Bardfield Papers’) arrived in 1933; in the early 1940s the Rowntrees, Kenneth and Diana, and Michael Rothenstein and his wife Duffy Ayers also settled in the village. Later they were joined by Walter Hoyle, printmaker and also a wallpaper designer; Marianne Straub, textile designer and weaver; illustrators and printmakers Bernard Cheese and his wife Sheila Robinson. There were also less well-known names, including George Chapman, Stanley Clifford-Smith and Laurence Scarfe. Though the careers of Bawden and Ravilious are welldocumented, many of the other artists are less well-known but equally talented, and most have never featured in a significant publication. This book tells the story of Great Bardfield and its artists, and their famous ‘open house’ exhibitions, showing how the village and neighbouring landscape nurtured a distinctive style of art, design and illustration from the 1930s to the 1970s and beyond. Gill Saunders is Senior Curator in the Word & Image Department of the V&A, specializing in 20th-century and contemporary prints and drawings. GOLD BOXES Masterpieces from the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection Heike Zech This book is a small volume on precious small boxes. Most were used to hold snuff – powdered tobacco – and were meant to be looked and admired from close-up. These miniature masterpieces were a key accessory for every stylish man and woman in the eighteenth century, reflecting the culture and fashion of the period. Gold is the defining material of the fifty masterpieces presented here. Therefore the most surprising aspect for those first encountering such pieces is not only the variety of forms and decoration, but also the materials of these boxes, from porcelain to precious stones, enamel and mother-of-pearl.

27 Table snuffbox Berlin, Germany, c.1765 c.1755? Jean Guillaume George Kruger (?) Chrysoprase, gold, diamonds, hardstone and foil w. 10cm, d. 7.8cm, h. 5cm
Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (r. 1740–86), had a particular preference for the green stone chrysoprase, and allegedly even asked to be shown boxes in this material on his deathbed. The light beauty of the box is in stark contrast to the story told by the stone: chrysoprase was found in Silesia, which became part of Prussia as a result of Frederick’s military campaigns, commemorated in the maps of the silver box medal.
Box medal with portrait of Frederick the Great and miniature maps of battlefields in the Seven Years’ War Bern, Switzerland, 1759–63 Johann Melchior Morikofer, G. Eichler and B. Hubner Silver and engraving diam. 5.1cm, h. 0.9cm

JAPANESE ART AND DESIGN The Collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum Greg Irvine, ed. Published to accompany the reopening of the V&A’s refurbished Toshiba Gallery of Art and Design in November 2015 The V&A has the UK’s largest permanent display of Japanese art, housing objects made over 1500 years. Collecting Japanese objects from its founding in 1852, the Museum has played a significant role in bringing the art of Japan to the attention of designers, manufacturers and the British public. This tradition continues to the present day, and in this new book some of the world’s leading researchers in the field bring their attention to the V&A’s unparalleled collection.

THE FOOTBALL’S REVOLT LeWitt - Him (Jan Le Witt & George Him) Footballs, as well as footballers, have feelings too, as proven by this reproduction of the charming 1940s children’s book by design duo Lewitt-Him. The excited citizens of Kickford and Goalbridge turn out for their annual football match only to have it cut short. After a particularly violent kick, the ball decides it has had enough and remains in the air, in spite of the townspeople’s heroic attempts to bring it back down. It is left to the children of the town to come up with a plan to save the match. Lewitt-Him is the pen name of design duo Jan Le Witt (1907–1991) and George Him (1900–1982). Both Polish by birth they arrived in London in 1937, sponsored by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Lewitt-Him’s successful graphic design partnership lasted 20 years, during which time they produced advertising and posters for Guinness and the Festival of Britain (1951). Stina does not like the cold. In fact, she will go to any length to avoid it. Even in summer she will never go out without tights and socks that cover her knees. When winter comes she retreats inside, and invents ingenious devices to protect her from the slightest chill. As the temperature drops Stina finally succumbs to the lure of her feather duvet and falls into a deep and dreamless sleep from which she is woken by a pounding at her door – two children tumble in blown by the icy wind. Through their encounter, Stina learns that nothing can keep you as warm as friendship. Set in Iceland, this beautifully illustrated story is the perfect read for cosy winter nights. Lani Yamamoto is the author and illustrator of Albert, a series of philosophy books for children. Stina was nominated for the 2014 Nordic Prize for Children’s and Young People’s Literature, winner of the 2014 Fjoruverdlaunin Women’s Literary Prize for Children’s Books and 2014 Dimmalimm Icelandic Illustration Award.

tína didn’t like the cold. She couldn’t eat ice cream, she wouldn’t touch metal, and she never wore skirts without tights AND socks that covered her knees.
Days began with hot oatmeal and books by the fire. Days ended snug in bed playing hide-and-seek with the moon.
It got colder and darker and Stína had to do more and more to keep warm.
