Over the past four years, I was lucky enough to be a part of the Cornell University field hockey team, and I can safely say that I would not be where I am today without the influence of my teammates and coaches. At Derryfield, Coach McCaigue laid the foundation for sportsmanship, inner courage, and calculated risktaking. Playing a Division I college sport is no cake walk—you have to embrace the difficult times and conquer them as a unit. You have to be able to recognize your flaws and correct them for the team to succeed. Over my athletic career, I learned to relish the challenge of working tirelessly towards achieving a goal. Now that I’ve graduated from Cornell and am in my first year at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, I’m ready to move on to other chapters of my life, and I look forward to beginning a career in food animal medicine. While the future is unpredictable, I know I will always carry with me the lessons I learned in leadership, communication, and perseverance during my time as both a Derryfield and Cornell field hockey player.

Derryfield shaped me into an athlete who can enjoy the sport while remaining competitive and focused. Moving from high school sports straight into collegiate level play is quite a leap for anyone. For me, the transition felt a bit more graceful than it potentially could have been. The environment that Derryfield cultivates for their athletes is tremendously supportive and enjoyable—a perfect balance between intensive play, passion for the game, and fun times with the team. Coach Cousineau and Coach Hettler both modeled the importance of building a strong and cohesive team. This allowed me to push my limits while enjoying the comraderie of my team and the sport. The Derryfield approach enabled me to become a more skilled and thoughtful player. My confidence on the soccer field from my time at Derryfield carried me through the challenge of making a name for myself on the pitch out here in Colorado.
