We’re a school where core values shape a vibrant community, and individual attention helps students excel academically. Likewise, in athletics we create an ideal environment for individuals to become the best they can be. Want proof? Since 2000, our teams have won more than 30 state championships and produced individual state champions in nordic skiing, alpine skiing, cross-country running, golf, swimming, and tennis. “
Hear what they ARE SAYING One of the best things about Derryfield sports is “having captains to guide you through what you need to work on, and to help you with your weaknesses, or help you get better with your strengths,” says Sierra, a 7th grader from Goffstown, N.H. She plays soccer, softball, and basketball and knows that her athletic experiences at Derryfield have helped to build her skills. In soccer she’s improved her defense; in softball she’s learned to steal bases; in basketball, her best sport, she has gained confidence as a ball handler. She says, “I love being a point guard and calling different plays.”
“ Every state championship will be something that I remember for the rest of my life,” says Brittany, a senior from Bedford, N.H. A four-year varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis player, Brittany is proud of winning three consecutive soccer state championships and two consecutive tennis state championships, as well as being selected captain for all three sports. She calls Derryfield’s coaches “talented and encouraging” noting, “It helps that most of our coaches are our teachers and understand our homework load every night.”
“I love the feeling of teamwork on the field and the competitiveness in the games,” says Polly, an 8th grader from Hopkinton, N.H. Polly shows off her own talents on town and premier league lacrosse teams, and as a championship-winning ski jumper with the Andover Outing Club. She also competes as a member of Derryfield’s middle school soccer, lacrosse, and ski teams. At Derryfield, she says, “I have learned that to be a successful team, everyone must work to their full ability.” “I am able to manage my school work, my school sports, and my hockey while I go to Derryfield,” says Dominick, an 8th grader from Windham, N.H. Playing hockey for the nationally ranked Greater Boston Vipers as well as the Olympic Development hockey team, Dominick plays baseball and soccer at Derryfield. While winning the Tri-Couny Championship with the middle school soccer team was a favorite moment, Dominick says one of his best experiences was Derryfield’s March break baseball training camp. “I was proud that I was able to keep up with the upper school students on the varsity team,” he says.
“ In soccer and lacrosse I have had dedicated, hardworking, experienced, and fun coaches,” says Matt, a junior from Manchester who has enjoyed multiple championship seasons. “They put in a lot of time to make their team succeed.” Matt, who has played six seasons with the New Hampshire Tomahawks lacrosse organization, believes that Derryfield coaches really bond with each player. He states, “That relationship between players and coaches is the reason Derryfield athletics are so successful.”
