DERRYFIELD ATHLETIC HISTORY
FORMULA
The exhilaration of a hard-fought game, the bonds between teammates, the thrill of putting your preparation to the test and seeing it pay off…At the Derryfield School, we can’t imagine life without these and all of the other great aspects of competitive sports. We’re a school where core values shape a vibrant community, and individual attention helps students excel academically. Likewise, in athletics we create an ideal environment for individuals to become the best they can be. Want proof? Since 2000, our teams have won more than 30 state championships and produced individual state champions in nordic skiing, alpine skiing, cross-country running, golf, swimming, and tennis. At Derryfield, it’s a win-win situation: We offer both great team experiences and excellent individual player development.
APPLYING TO AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL We’re looking for strong students who demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning, social and emotional maturity, and a concern for others. Motivated students who are also experienced or aspiring athletes are encouraged to apply. Girls Varsity Field Hockey, 2011 State Championship Game
It’s a cold and snowy November night when #2-ranked, defending champion Derryfield matches up against #5 Stevens. The first half is fiercely fought, but with no scoring on either side. The second half begins with an early goal for Stevens, but within ten minutes sophomore Berklee Vaillancourt connects to even the score at 1-1. The clock runs out on the game. On the first overtime. On the second overtime. Now both teams face the prospect of sudden death. Derryfield’s girls set up to execute one of their go-to plays. Stevens manages to disrupt it, but junior(?) Zoe PiSierra makes her own opportunity, putting the ball in the goal to the astonishment of both her opponents and teammates. Time stands still. Finally the realization hits–and the screaming begins. Derryfield’s girls are champions for the second consecutive year!
Boys Varsity Lacrosse 2010 State Championship Game
This night is a culmination of a four-year rebuilding process. Ten seniors stand one win away from a 17-1 season and the NHIAA DIII state title. But first they have to beat the undefeated Kingswood Knights. Early on, Derryfield executes its offensive sets, but Kingswood takes advantage of transition opportunities driving for an 8-7 lead at halftime. By the start of the fourth quarter, it’s 10-9 Kingswood. Until Derryfield rattles off three straight goals to take a 12-10 lead. But Kingswood will not go away quietly, sinking one with just over four minutes left to make the score 12-11. Less than one minute to go and Kingswood has possession and one last chance to tie the game. The attackman closes in, but wait! Derryfield’s defenders have stripped him of the ball! One of them scoops it up, the clock ticks, the horn sounds, it’s OVER!

“ Every state championship will be something that I remember for the rest of my life,” says Brittany, a senior from Bedford, N.H. A four-year varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis player, Brittany is proud of winning three consecutive soccer state championships and two consecutive tennis state championships, as well as being selected captain for all three sports. She calls Derryfield’s coaches “talented and encouraging” noting, “It helps that most of our coaches are our teachers and understand our homework load every night.”
“ I’ve met some of my best friends playing sports and having those bonds make the high school experience so much more enjoyable” says Justice, a junior from Manchester. A three sport varsity athlete at Derryfield (soccer, basketball, and lacrosse), Justice is equally appreciative of the larger lessons gleaned from her athletic experiences. “Thanks to Mr. Lemire, my coach the last two years, I have become more talented than I ever thought I could be. I can also now manage to get home from a basketball game at 10:30 at night and still maintain good grades. I wouldn’t have become a successful student if I didn’t play sports.”
“ In soccer and lacrosse I have had dedicated, hardworking, experienced, and fun coaches,” says Matt, a junior from Manchester who has enjoyed multiple championship seasons. “They put in a lot of time to make their team succeed.” Matt, who has played six seasons with the New Hampshire Tomahawks lacrosse organization, believes that Derryfield coaches really bond with each player. He states, “That relationship between players and coaches is the reason Derryfield athletics are so successful.”

Alumni PROFILES Hannah Will ’08: Crew, Swimming, Lacrosse After receiving multiple awards in her three sports during her years at Derryfield, Hannah graduated with two exceptional honors: Derryfield’s 2008 Female Athlete of the Year Award and the Ken Piatt Memorial Scholarship, given to the boy or girl who combines excellence in athletics with outstanding achievement. Hannah then headed to Tufts University to swim on the varsity swim team and row on the varsity crew team. She lists numerous ways that her Derryfield sports experiences shaped her as an athlete and as a person—starting with leadership. She says, “I think it gave me a lot of confidence to be the stroke in the women’s first boat and to be captain of the swimming and lacrosse teams. When I came to college I wasn’t uncomfortable being in a position of leadership, even if I didn’t think I was the most talented of the group. I think Derryfield gave me that advantage.” Also on the list: time management. “Derryfield was where I first needed to understand how to manage my time,” says Hannah. “I played sports in all three seasons and my house is a solid 45 minutes from school. I matriculated at Tufts with a really good understanding of how to balance my commitments. Being a member of Derryfield’s rigorous academic community--and my participation in Derryfield athletics--made me better prepared for the demands and expectations of college than many of the other matriculating freshmen.”
Andrew Cochran ’01 Soccer, Basketball, Tennis
Matthew Bagley ’97 Lacrosse, Soccer
Katherine DiPastina ’09 Field Hockey, Softball
Every year at Derryfield, one athlete from each varsity team is selected to receive a Class of 1970 Award for most improvement. A triple-threat athlete, Andrew won one of these awards for each of his sports, though his greatest accomplishments would ultimately be in soccer. Captain of the soccer team, he earned the Golden Boot Award as the leading scorer both his junior and senior years, finishing up with 42 career goals at Derryfield. His individual honors aside, he and his teammates experienced some character-building moments. He notes, “I experienced the success of two undefeated soccer seasons and the disappointment of not winning a state title.” Next up was Lake Forest College, where his career highlights included winning the Midwest Conference Championship his freshman year, leading the team in scoring as a junior, and serving as team captain his senior year. He says, “My years at Derryfield taught me how to balance my athletic ambitions with my academic responsibilities; and when I arrived at college, I was prepared to be successful in both.” Since then, Andrew has capitalized on both his college education and his athletic experiences in his work in the sports media industry. A former business analyst at ESPN, he is currently an affiliate sales manager at MLB Network. He says, “Derryfield athletics taught me about teamwork and provided me with great leadership opportunities that benefited me both in college and professionally at ESPN and MLB Network. I was lucky to have great coaches who were fantastic mentors.”
“Derryfield profoundly shaped me as an athlete,” states Matt. “Not only did I learn how to train for and achieve success, I also learned how to be gracious and fair at every level of competition, in victory and defeat. Most of all, I learned how to develop and pursue my passion for the sport. This passion—more than anything—has been the driving force behind all of my athletic achievements since high school.” Lacrosse has been central to his life both in U.S. leagues and in the United Kingdom, and those achievements have been numerous. Many times an All-Star, MVP, or champion in his school, college, and professional careers, Matt is currently the head coach of England’s national lacrosse team and captain of the South of England regional team and has played in a number of British National Championships. He is grateful to Derryfield for athletic opportunities, but also life lessons. “At Derryfield School, I learned about team spirit and loyalty to both sport and institution. These lessons—and the individuals who taught them to me—definitely had an effect on the type of player and coach I would become. My teachers and coaches always taught me to carry myself with class, to be humble and fair in all aspects of life, especially during hard times. That last bit is often overlooked; it’s easy to lose interest or focus when things aren’t going one’s way, either on the field or in life. Maintaining a steadfast work ethic, a positive attitude, and the knowledge that pursuing a dream is a noble and worthwhile calling–these are the values and lessons my Derryfield teachers, coaches, and advisors imparted.”
A contributor on Cornell University’s field hockey team even as a freshman rookie, Kat earned the Most Improved Player as a sophomore. The Ivy Leaguer was much honored during her time at Derryfield. Recognized as the Field Hockey Player of the Year in 2007 by the Manchester Union Leader, she was named Derryfield’s Female Athlete of the Year as a junior and as a senior, among other honors. Accolades notwithstanding, Kat takes nothing for granted. She says, “Derryfield athletics have taught me to play with humility. After losing two straight championships my freshman and sophomore years, and finally winning in my junior year, I was well accustomed to the reality that one can never expect to win any game.” Kat has great admiration for her coaches at Derryfield, whom she considers to be great role models. “The coaching staff at Derryfield was a crucial part of my preparation for collegiate sports,” she says. “I am particularly fortunate to have had Mr. McCaigue’s experience and guidance in the realm of collegiate field hockey, without which my skills as a college athlete would not be remotely close to what they are today. My other coaches were often teachers who doubled in their duties by being in the classroom and on the field, and it is not surprising to me that they dedicate themselves to the students as athletes just as much as they do in class. These coaches taught me to have a strong work ethic and cultivated my interest in their sports, and without their help and enthusiasm I could not imagine continuing on to play in college the way I am now.”
