YEARS

Derryfield was founded in 1964 as a day school, where students could get an education on par with the best boarding schools, yet still be home for dinner each night. Fifty years later, that still matters to families all across New Hampshire. This year, we welcome students from fifty towns across the state, shown by the pins in the map below. Our bus routes now serve the Seacoast (new this year), Salem, Concord, Milford, and Nashua areas, bringing our students to school each day, and still getting them back to their families in time for dinner.

WELCOME HOME TO DERRYFIELD As part of Derryfield’s Fiftieth Anniversary celebration, we’re bringing alumni back on campus to celebrate their accomplishments and have them share their stories with current students. Our Lyceum Art Gallery is displaying works by alumni artists all year long, and special allschool assembly programs feature alumni speakers. The assemblies opened with a round table of early graduates, Ellie Cochran ’69, Joni Taube ’69, and Jeannie Devine ’76, talking about what life was like at Derryfield in the early days. Sarah Silverman ’89 made everyone laugh with her candid confession (see below), but also made us think, with her list of things she wished she’d known as a teenager. Most recently, Gary Hirshberg ’72 and David Snow ’72 both talked about their lives as business entrepreneurs, and how Derryfield helped set them on their way.

“I STILL WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND I’M SO EXCITED THAT I DON’T HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL. BUT SINCE I HAD TO, I’M SO GLAD IT WAS DERRYFIELD.” –SARAH SILVERMAN ’89

Members of the Derryfield community gathered with David Snow ’72 and Gary Hirshberg ’72 at a networking breakfast.

CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS

Re-Introducing Alice

Two ways we’re celebrating throughout the year are our “50 Acts of Kindness” and “Commit to 50” initiatives. “50 Acts of Kindness” honors our founding families’ vision by asking groups or individuals to commit to performing an act of service during the year. “Commit to 50” invites members of the school community to do fifty of something, whether athletic, studious, or fun. As part of the Derryfield family, we hope you’ll participate, too! Send your ideas, or pictures of completed projects, to us at milestones@derryfield.org and we’ll post them on our website. See more of what’s already been done at www.derryfield.org/50/students.

COMMIT TO

ACTS OF KINDNESS

Associate Head of School Jennifer Melkonian talks with Bennett Freeman ’70 and former Board Chair Tricia Lucas at September’s Leadership Gathering.

Alice Handwerk, who has been a member of the Advancement Office at Derryfield since 2003, has taken on a new role as Director of Alumni Development. She looks forward to expanding her numerous connections with Derryfield alumni in the coming years. Keep an eye on your inbox for upcoming alumni events.

Our eighth graders “committed” first, by going down the Geronimo water slide at Water Country fifty times during their retreat! The tenth graders started off the year by spending their retreat day at Massabesic Audubon working on several service projects.

Carroll-Ann Goldsmith (Brianna Smith ’14) speaks with Jim and Laurie Matheos (Lindsay ’14) at October’s Alumni Parent Gathering.

TEACHING THE TEACHERS Derryfield and Northeastern University Launch Professional Development Collaboration

Faculty members Jay Godfrey, Pete Brandt, Karen Robichaud, and Michele Leclerc went on a 50 km bike ride.

The JV boys’ soccer team held bake sales and sold grilled food at evening soccer games to feed hungry fans and benefit the USO.

2014-2015 marks the first year of a professional development partnership between Derryfield and Northeastern University, in which Derryfield faculty pursue advanced degrees in education. It’s unique because it is conducted entirely online, using various online tools and techniques. With the support of the Nancy S. Boettiger Professional Development Endowed Fund, Derryfield covers the costs for up to three faculty per year. Giving our faculty this opportunity is exciting, says Dean of Faculty Brent Powell, and helping Northeastern shape the program shows the school’s “growing role in leading excellent independent school teaching and learning.” Derryfield’s first three enrollees in the program are Regina Assetta (English), Jeff Cousineau (Physics) and Head of Middle School Mark Blaisdell, all of whom are pursuing their M.Ed. All have already noted positive ways in which the program may shape their teaching, and are looking forward to sharing insights with their students and fellow faculty. The online aspect will be especially useful in developing our own online programs, and helping our students succeed in other online environments.

MS girls’ soccer and field hockey teamed up to organize a canned food drive for New Horizon’s Soup Kitchen.

Members of Ms. Melkonian and Ms. Branch’s advisory are writing notes of gratitude to 50 members of the Derryfield community.

Jeffrey Cousineau

As one of three Derryfield teachers enrolled in the Northeastern program, Jeff Cousineau has added “student” to a resume that already includes teacher, coach, and parent (Zoe ’20). Mr. Cousineau came to Derryfield in 1997, and has been teaching physics and coaching boys’ varsity soccer ever since. He’s guided his students to success in STEM, and his soccer teams to six championships, including this year’s unexpected victory. Outside Derryfield, he is also the director of the Magic Touch Soccer Academy, Director of Coaching for the Olympic Development Program and Director of Coaching Education for the NH Soccer Association.

ALUMNI EVENTS Re-Introducing Alice

Two ways we’re celebrating throughout the year are our “50 Acts of Kindness” and “Commit to 50” initiatives. “50 Acts of Kindness” honors our founding families’ vision by asking groups or individuals to commit to performing an act of service during the year. “Commit to 50” invites members of the school community to do fifty of something, whether athletic, studious, or fun. As part of the Derryfield family, we hope you’ll participate, too! Send your ideas, or pictures of completed projects, to us at milestones@derryfield.org and we’ll post them on our website. In November 1985, Derryfield’s second production of Peter Pan moved indoors, staged at the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. Notable cast members included our very own Director of Admission, Kathleen Rutty Fey ’87, as Peter. The January 1993 production recorded two firsts. Performed in Derryfield’s theater for the first time, it was also the first time the actors actually “took flight.” Jennifer Melkonian, who directed that production, reflects, “This was a magical time for the actors and audience alike, bringing Derryfield theater to new heights, while at the same time creating nostalgic moments for those who had been involved with the School’s early productions.” 2014 is the second time that Jim Speigel has directed the show. “The first time was in 2004, and while the show remains as classic as ever, a new cast makes for a whole new experience. Everyone is so excited about this never-ending tale... for all the same reasons that made our past productions equally magical.”

FALL SPORTS RECAP Derryfield is always proud of its athletes, and this fall was no exception. Here are some individual and team highlights that we wanted you to know about. For pictures and complete coverage of every team, visit www.derryfield.org/athletics.

Emily van Duren ’17 did great things on horseback, winning the “Big E” riding show in saddle seat in September, and was recognized nationally by being named to the US Equitation Federation’s Saddle Seat Young Rider’s Team.

Our middle school field hockey team had a great season. Coached by Tracy Blaisdell and Laura Russell, they captured their first Tri-County championship.

Students also had the opportunity to try something new this fall, when a fencing club was formed. Members attacked and parried twice a week, led by a local professional fencing instructor, and a good time was had by all.

The varsity golf team moved up a division, from D-IV to D-III and still went 15-2 for the season, placing third in the State Tournament. Patrick McGinley ’15 even took home the trophy at the D-III State Individual Championship! The boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams had tremendous seasons, both winning their state championship. The girls were led by Gabi Brummett ’17, who’s scored over 100 goals in only two seasons. The boys, despite having a very young team this year (only two seniors), made it a “three-peat.” Casey Hecox ’15 ended her Derryfield cross country career in great style, winning the D-III State Championship, coming in 8th of 145 in the State Meet of Champions, and 29th of 264 at the New England Championships.

PETER PAN NEVER GROWS OLD Peter Pan was chosen for this year’s Middle School musical—an apt choice for Derryfield’s 50th year. It was first staged as a Middle School play in the spring of 1971, and has been produced once every decade since then. Jeannie Devine ’76 remembers that first production, “it was entirely outdoors, using the woods between the Gateway building and the patio just outside the cafeteria.” In November 1985, Derryfield’s second production of Peter Pan moved indoors, staged at the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. “I STILL WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND I’M SO EXCITED THAT I DON’T HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL. BUT SINCE I HAD TO, I’M SO GLAD IT WAS DERRYFIELD.” –SARAH SILVERMAN ’89

FALL 2014

As part of Derryfield’s Fiftieth Anniversary celebration, we’re bringing alumni back on campus to celebrate their accomplishments and have them share their stories with current students. Most recently, Gary Hirshberg ’72 and David Snow ’72 both talked about their lives as business entrepreneurs, and how Derryfield helped set them on their way.

belonging Welcome to Belonging, Derryfield’s new semi-annual newsletter. One of the goals of our strategic plan is to build a sense of belonging among the entire Derryfield community—students and alumni, faculty and staff, and current and past parents. Filled with news, information and events, Belonging will let you know what’s going on at your school. Each issue features a calendar of upcoming events for your planning, as well as short features and pictures of what’s happening, both on and off campus—all things to interest and excite you about this family to which you belong. We hope you enjoy! Members of the Derryfield community gathered with David Snow ’72 and Gary Hirshberg ’72 at a networking breakfast.
