March was the month for travel at Derryfield, with students going on service and cultural trips all over the globe during spring break. With fifty years of travel now under our belts, we thought it might be fun to look at where in the world we’ve been. We’re posting our students’ insights on their journeys, and more pictures, on our travel blog, Global Perspectives. Take a look at www.derryfield.org/global/perspectives.

WINTER SPORTS RECAP Snow and cold weather didn’t keep our Derryfield athletes from some hot performances. Here are a few of the season’s highlights. For pictures and complete coverage of every team, visit www.derryfield.org/ athletics.
In the first-ever season of varsity hockey at Derryfield, the new team faced a challenge. By joining forces with Hollis-Brookline High School in a co-op program, we leaped right into Division II play. The going was rough at first for the HBDS Warriors, but they kept at it, going 5-7 in the latter part of the season, for a final record of 5-13. The coaches are proud of the way the team came together and are looking forward to continuing to build next year.

Not all the water this winter was frozen—Derryfield had some great results in the pool too, with Jon Furlong ’17 taking home the state’s Division II diving championship. We also learned in February that varsity soccer player Gabi Brummett ’17 was named the Gatorade New Hampshire Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year, for the second year in a row. Finally, though they may not play on a court, our “mathletes” had an amazing year! With a small squad (in math competitions, the bigger the team, the higher the potential score), they still finished second overall in the SMASH series of competitions, held over the course of the year. Individually, Zach Levell ’16 placed third in Juniors, and Josh Campbell ’15 won it all, taking 1st place in Seniors and the overall competition, which comes with a $5,000 scholarship.

Seniors have begun to dream of life after Derryfield, and the rest of us are eager to meet the next generation of Derryfield students now that they’ve gotten their good news from our Admission office. Results from the Strategic Plan Survey The results are in! This winter, members of the Derryfield community were surveyed in an effort to collect feedback on their experience with the School, especially as relates to goal one of the strategic plan: belonging. Participants were asked to give feedback on diversity, school spirit, volunteering, communications, and their general sense of belonging at Derryfield. The response rates were incredibly high: 34% for alumni, current parents, and alumni parents and 62% for students and faculty/staff.

While we have only just started examining the results, it was immediately apparent that the Derryfield faculty was consistently ranked highest as the most important component of the Derryfield experience. In addition, 97% of recent alums said we prepared them “well” or “very well” for college. All the feedback received will guide our efforts in many areas of the strategic plan. Thank you to all who participated!

In the spring of 2014, the Facilities committee began talking with faculty, staff and students about what they would like to see in a re-imagined campus. Topics for improvement ranged from academics and athletics, to dining facilities and common areas, to security and sustainability. The firm of Cowan Goudreau Architects, with additional assistance from Centerbrook Architects and Planners, presented the complete campus Master Plan to the Board of Trustees in December and received their enthusiastic support. We’ll have more on the exciting changes to campus proposed by the plan in the next issue of Derryfield Today, due out at the end of the summer. Until then, here are some pictures from the original planning session, and a taste of what a new campus might look like...

A PROGRESS REPORT ON DERRYFIELD’S STRATEGIC PLAN
DERRYFIELD SUMMER PROGRAMS
Two years ago, Pete Brandt and Lindley Shutz began to lead the middle school faculty in discussions about what characteristics they felt should be developed in their students, alongside basic knowledge of subjects such as history, math and English. They arrived at a list of ten traits: Community Member, Active Learner, Reader, Speaker/Performer (Communicator), Writer, Researcher, Artist/Creator, Problem Solver, Quantitative Thinker, and an Active Healthy Person Many of these skills are, of course, already being taught in one class or another. The idea is to be more deliberate about cultivating them across the curriculum (reading effectively, for example, not just in English, but in history and science as well), and also to establish measures to evaluate students’ progress toward achieving the goals. Beginning with the first four characteristics this year, each teacher has the freedom to decide how to integrate them into their lesson plans. The end result will be a “mosaic” of work, projects, and experiences, accumulated over each student’s Middle School years, which together form a picture of their achievements. The hope is to create a digital platform that will allow students to share this mosaic with family and friends. With these skills as a foundation, what they choose to build on it is up to them.
goal 4: elevating
“ Increase public awareness of Derryfield as the premier day school in the region and as an integral community convener.”
Derryfield did something new in presenting this year’s musical production of Beauty and the Beast. To share the show with a wider audience and increase awareness of our theater arts programs, the Derryfield Players put on a special Friday morning show and invited a number of schools in the area to bring their students. Local schools Mount St. Mary, St. Benedict’s, St. Catherine’s and Mill Falls Charter School brought about 300 students combined, representing grades 4–6. The audience was entranced by the show, and many stayed afterwards to collect autographs from the entire cast, including Belle, the Beast, Cogsworth, Lumiere and Mrs. Potts.
