A Rich History. A Wealth of Opportunity.

W

illiam K. Vanderbilt could have built his Idle Hour Estate anywhere he wanted when, over 110 years ago, he opted for the site that is today the Rudolph Campus of Dowling College, on the South Shore of Long Island, west of the Hamptons and little more than an hour, by train, to Manhattan. Dowling’s Brookhaven Campus is home to the College’s NCAA Division II playing fields, our Aeronautics program and some of our graduate programs, including doctoral programs in Education, and it all comprises a vast setting for college life. While campus setting is a compelling feature of many first-rate colleges, the most important facet of degree studies is the quality of instruction and the prospects for success after graduation. Dowling can boast both characteristics while offering the distinct advantages of its locations in one of the most thriving regions anywhere in the world.

While there are no guarantees in life, Dowling students who do their part by excelling in their studies can count on a faculty and staff who will work on their behalf to optimize the probability that Dowling graduates will be ‘discovered’ by someone who can open the door to opportunities after graduation, thereby setting the stage for a lifetime of career success, be that moving on to a graduate school or into a professional pursuit that coincides with their degree.

Named President Emeritus of Wagner, he went on to England to become President of Richmond, The American International University in London, and then to Egypt, where, as Founding Chancellor, he was overseeing the creation of what was to be the largest American international university in the world.

resident Norman Smith comes to Dowling having logged over 40 years in higher education. Early in his career, he was Assistant Dean of two Harvard Graduate Schools, Education and Government, where he also earned his doctorate. He went on to become one of the youngest college presidents in America when he went to Wagner College, overseeing the emergence of Wagner as a top-ranked college in the Northeastern US and a TIME Magazine College of the Year.

erhaps the most important and relevant strength of Dowling College is its focus on success after graduation. At a time when as many as half of all college graduates over the past five years remain either unemployed or are working in jobs minimally related to their college majors, Dowling is heavily focused on doing everything possible to insure its graduates on the positive side of this statistic.

His books of note include FROM BOTTOM TO TOP TIER IN A DECADE: THE WAGNER COLLEGE TURNAROUND YEARS and WHAT COLLEGE TRUSTEES NEED TO KNOW.

Dowling professors are veterans in their field who focus their work on undergraduates. Nothing any college has to offer is more valuable to future success than the quality and commitment of the faculty and their willingness to use their professional contacts to open doors for their students.

He is the recipient of the New York University President’s Medal for achievement in higher education leadership and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Philadelphia University, Wagner College and Richmond University.

College is an expensive investment. We realize how important it is for that investment to pay off after graduation. - Norman Smith, President

Unlike many college campuses in more rural settings, Dowling graduates have same-day, round-trip access to one of the most powerful cities in the world, enabling access, while an undergraduate, to post-graduate career opportunities in just about any top-of-theladder setting. Likewise, leaders in virtually every professional field can visit Dowling, appearing as guest speakers and teachers, thereby giving Dowling students an opportunity to build inroads into what would otherwise be closed doors that are almost impossible to penetrate after graduation. It is not just what you know, but who knows that you know it. Being discovered for your talent, knowledge and work ethic is greatly enhanced when you are close enough to those who can take you to the next level. Dowling faculty and staff work to help you become discovered.

That’s the Power of Dowling.

Dowling College’s Rudolph Campus in Oakdale is set on the Connectquot River in the heart of the “Idle Hour” summer and holiday estate of William K. Vanderbilt, grandson of 19th Century railroad magnate, Cornelius Vanderbilt. The gray stone and red brick waterfront mansion that is the campus centerpiece was constructed in 1901 and was the crown jewel of the original 900 acre property.
