New for Brass Your guide to the new ABRSM Brass syllabus 2013 – 2016 for Horn, E Horn, Baritone, Euphonium and Tuba
For Brass teachers and learners
ABRSM’s new Brass syllabus 2013-2016 will be published in July 2012 and takes effect from 1 January 2013. It will feature new set pieces for Horn, E Horn, Baritone/Euphonium and Tuba. (Please note: there are no changes to the set pieces for Trumpet, Trombone and Bass Trombone, which were last revised in 2010.)
New set pieces The ABRSM repertoire lists have been expanded for every lower brass instrument, bringing them in line with other instrument families. We consulted widely amongst brass teachers to gain views and advice on repertoire additions as well as favourites to be retained. The new syllabuses reflect many of these suggestions, and some 20% of the current choices have been retained, for teachers favouring continuity.
More instrument-specific pieces now feature on the new syllabuses and a selection of pieces from the brass band repertoire appears towards the syllabus’s higher grades. These include repertoire associated with Gordon Higginbottom, Robert and David Childs, and Steven Mead, as well as (for the first time on ABRSM’s brass syllabuses) titles from Salvationist Publishing. A number of publications have also been set on all four syllabuses, providing welcome news to those teaching cross-brass, in groups.
A few of the exciting repertoire choices that teachers and learners can look forward to include: For Horn:
Reinecke’s haunting Notturno (Grade 7), Gliere’s romantic concerto (Grade 8), and the rewarding York Bowen and Trygve Madsen sonatas (Grade 8)
For E Horn:
Hindemith’s lyrical sonata from 1943 (Grades 6 and 8) and a new transcription of Mozart’s Horn Quintet (Grade 8)
For Baritone/ Euphonium:
Karl Jenkins’s brand new euphonium concerto, an atmospheric concerto by Philip Sparke and a gritty sonata by Antony Roper (Grade 8)
For Tuba:
An inventive book of new studies by Timothy Jackson entitled ‘Adverbial Etudes’ (Grades 1 to 5), Andrew Duncan’s lyrical ‘Haworth Suite’ inspired by the Brontës (Grades 3, 4, 5 and 7), Alec Wilder’s delightful Poulenc-like ‘Effie Suite’ (Grades 5 and 7), and Philip Sparke’s sunny Tuba Concerto (Grade 8)
New resources from ABRSM for Brass teachers and learners Written by composers particularly associated with brass, such as Philip Sparke, Lucy Pankhurst and Peter Meechan, the books cater for trebleclef, bass-clef and E bass-clef readers. For each book there are three piano accompaniment books available separately, for use with B ,E and F instruments.
Shining Brass ABRSM is excited to announce a new series of cross-brass publications called Shining Brass. Publishing in July 2012, this series features two volumes catering for Grades 1–3 and Grades 4 & 5, and providing syllabus pieces on all three lists (A, B and C).
Each part book comes with CDs containing a single recorded performance of each piece (played variously by E Horn, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium or E Tuba) and complete backing tracks recorded from the B , E , and F piano accompaniment books. Additionally a full performance of every piece played on a B , E , and F instrument can be downloaded for free from www.abrsm.org/shiningbrass
Principal Horn ABRSM is also publishing a book of new compositions for Horn and Piano entitled Principal Horn. This is a single collection of superb repertoire pieces and studies for more advanced Horn players. Covering Grades 6 to 8 it contains 13 pieces in a variety of attractive styles, specially commissioned from three of the finest composers of Horn music working today, Richard Bissill, John Frith and Timothy Jackson. Key features: • printed music for three pieces from each of Lists A, B, and C of Grades 6 of the ABRSM 2013–2020 syllabus for Horn, with a further four pieces for Grades 7 & 8 • inspiring and varied repertoire from which to build a balanced programme for the exam or concert • a CD featuring exemplar performances as well as backing tracks
