COLLAGE It’s pretty difficult for me not to think about Kurt Scwhitters when the word ‘collage’ is uttered ... His abstract assemblages of ephemera that were influential to movements, eventually paving the way for pop art and still continuously leaving an audience awe inspired ... and admittedly he is the reason why the theme was chosen. For me collage is as much about the collecting as it is constructing, the gathering together of things that intrigue, that excite, or induce a sense of wonder, provoking the imagination. The Theme really needs no explanation, it’s one that is entirely open to interpretation, where the process or the act of making in itself fits the brief and is also the subject.
5
Why and how people choose to make collage fascinates me, that collage making can be both a way of getting to an idea or an expression of the idea, there seem to be no rights or wrongs, though i’m cautious in saying so! but not being limited to image, word, sounds, video, anything, everything can be considered as collage ... David Hockney is quoted as saying ‘Television is becoming a collage - there are so many channels that you move through them making a collage yourself. In that sense, everyone sees something a bit different’ This theme presents the work of artists that have various approaches, each seeing things a bit different, presenting a lively, colourful, diverse approach to personal practice ... but consider it more of a glimpse into worlds that are much larger more expansive than they appear to be within the limitation of digital pages. Huge thanks to those who have contributed, thus helping to bring this theme into reality. And if you love collage Hannah Hoch is still on at Whitechapel, a show to be seen ... Victoria Coster

Kenneth Mahood with words - artist to artist
Kenneth Mahood claims his collages are just a useful bit of recycling. “All the elements are for formal or colour reasons,” he says. “ There is no message, only fragments of messages” He loves - and has drawers full of - old letters, old postcards and photographs, labels, museum and theatre tickets, books of matches and miscellaneous ephemera; all sorts of odds and ends that just take his fancy.

Before Kenneth retired, he divided his time between his main job as a cartoonist for the Times, the Financial Times, The Daily Mail, Punch and the New Yorker with painting, writing and illustrating a number of children’s books as well as making collages. He is now, in his eighties, writing a graphic novel and continuing to make collages.

Somehow, over the years, he has also found time to make hundreds of smaller collages, the size of greetings cards, which he would regularly send to friends and colleagues. The images shown here are from a collection accumulated by one couple and total about 50 in all. When pressed, he admits that when he starts, he looks for things of relevance to the person or occasion, but in the process of making, all sorts of other interesting things catch his eye and somehow find their way into to the image.

THE ELOQUENCE The Ritual
Responding to Collage
That running tap that gushes out to you; Its hand faded on the constant that registers: Timeless shadows whom cite aloud truths, Back at your hour is the tempered reckon firm. Fingers gesture the soul to stroke the spirit realm: provocatively yet thickly the movement hassprung Sung itself to you as a buzz: being a drone, To these walls earshot thinly are the star spangled What of this speckled flush within my vision? Is it miraculously to the defragmentation of matter's? When either are put away projecting as a doll's to pins Interfacing with a day's mood, to flagellate on lost factors As the air beats at the window through the curtains The Sun hides itself away from cloud to cloud A muse is there making love with the intra'V'enus That Romantic body rising up to reach out

My work is not exactly a collage, but it can be seen as one, i've been using a mix of painting media such as: coloured inks, pencils, acrylics, ball-pen and retouch in Photoshop . My art work is pretty much inspired by fashion and nature, i’m interested in colours and contrast, also human beauty. I love flowers and plants that’s why i've chosen the photograph of that model from a very flowery photo session. I’ve been drawing pretty much since I was born, I graduated from art high school , I did a BA Course in Interior Design in Poland, now i’m continuing with an MA related to product design, at Camberwell University of Arts here in London.

THE ELOQUENCE THAT SMALL CONTRADICTION
41
You left as an icicle drained off me for a residue; As if fate dropped off on me its pledge, that it looms, Mischievous clouds got over are the walls; Intravenously such monstrosities can tickle, With such a voluptuous figure for décor; Its ‘soft’ to think of you as an easel; The doll is cast in die with a make up’s; The light it receives spelt as prey on the cusp Bloody relatives sew madness against vibrations, Finding that even your fill a- parts is a trans- migration, And though homemade maybe this sour way for you, Nothing can smack with fire being out of place, for you.

THE ELOQUENCE YOUR BIGGEST CONTRADICTION
57
The way her lipstick intersects and tells tails with his tie, Their eyes net as if price scales to a text on their side, This foreign ‘cloth’ mixed with tongues; A good corporate identity is a uniformed one, But is to imagine them both naked their sin?, As the sexiest symbols, but a vagina versus a penis; Who is suppose to win over the audience’s?, Especially when its dressed to kill the ‘sensitiveness’, Upon instructing and conditioning, what’s on display?, All because it's taken to heart and got into from a foray.

Tony Roe In Abstraction
"suffering" "clouded" "disfigured" "downer"
Each of the set of four are different representations, or moods within the frame of mind suggested by the title
44 prints, are connected to the daily life of an addict and form a soon to be published e-book
The four groups are part of a set of eleven groups of prints that have been digitally modified from my original screen prints.

In recovery I know that once an addiction takes hold the "happy junkie" mentioned in a Placebo song is more often than not an unhappy junkie.
By addiction I am not specifically referring to any substance or activity, legal or illegal, but to the reality of being addicted to anything.
Of the eleven "moods" visualised in these prints, the addict is liable to go through one or any of these moods throughout the course of any hour let alone any day.

“Its about the relationship between the internal and external. How the ego, the characters we play relate to the outside world. Do the two intertwine or are they separate?... 1

... The brain is the receiver and transmitter, so essentially everything is in our head. We all agree on the perception of things however we all see things in a slightly different way. Is the ego just a barrier to the true nature of reality. All observations are taken from the human mind, does that mean they are correct, or is there a new understanding which we cannot grasp yet. 2
