Can You Afford to Make the Wrong Cow?

The benefits of artificial insemination are hard to deny, yet only a fraction of beef cows are artificially inseminated annually in the U.S. and around the world. Unassisted calves from first calf heifers, faster, more efficient growth rates, high value carcasses, shorter calving seasons, and heavier, more uniform calves are just a few of the well know advantages of A.I. Perhaps, the biggest advantage to utilizing A.I. is the value of the replacement females you can create Unfortunately, the economic advantage of creating the right replacement females is also the hardest benefit to quantify.

Most cow-calf producers have an image of the ‘ideal cow’ in mind. It may even go beyond a mental picture to a list of genetic traits and attributes that compose this ideal. Modern semen sexing technology provides us with a powerful tool to make replacement females from a select portion of any given cowherd. However, just

because female sexed semen is available on a given bull does not mean that his daughters will make good cows. When making the decision of which bull to use in making your next set of replacement females, ask yourself: “Can I afford to make the wrong cow?”

It’s easy to recognize the impact of genetics when it shows up as additional money in your calf check from the sale barn or the closeout from the feedyard. However, as you consider the genetics that will be used in making your next generation of replacement females, it is important to consider the traits that impact your input costs. Cow size, dry matter intake, fertility, longevity, maternal calving ease, milk, and convenience traits significantly impact maternal profitability. Breeding decisions that move these traits in the wrong direction can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars in additional cow costs on an annual basis.

DRIVE MATERNAL EFFICIENCY AND PROFITABILITY WITHOUT SACRIFICE

ABS Global’s Sexcel sexed female semen product line gives producers the freedom to concentrate their maternal breeding decisions on sires offering traits needed to drive maternal efficiency and profitability without sacrifice. Producers can create their replacement females from a defined portion of their cow herd with Sexcel without concern about the performance of male progeny from a mating.

MATERNAL P R YTILIBATIFO

In this article, we focus on Angus genetics, as they represent most beef genetics being utilized through AI today. The American Angus Association (AAA) provides us with multiple economic indices for use in selecting cattle for different scenarios. $Beef ($B) is a terminal index that serves as a good tool for predicting post-weaning profitability of cattle but has zero maternal emphasis. $Maternal ($M) has the makings of strong maternal index but is a primarily output focused index.

The AAA economic indexes are useful tools, yet none appear to be ideal for identifying the most profitable maternal genetics for a producer choosing to utilize sexed semen to create replacements. Using $M to select maternal sires is a good start, however, a stronger emphasis on traits that impact input costs is necessary to identify the most maternally efficient and profitable animals

ADDITIONAL TRAITS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING FOR COW EFFICIENCY

While we don’t have a direct tool to select for cow efficiency, we know that traits like Mature Weight (MW), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), and Milk can all impact the inputs needed to maintain a cow. Mature weight is our best indicator for a cow’s maintenance requirements. There are always exceptions, but on average, bigger cows require more feed and resources to maintain than smaller cows. $M places downward pressure on the Mature Weight EPD but not on Dry Matter Intake or Milk. An emphasis on controlling DMI and Milk EPDs is necessary to keep cow maintenance costs in check.

Dry Matter Intake is typically measured during the growing phase of an animal’s life. It is challenging data to collect, so there is limited information on dry matter intake in mature cattle. Nonetheless, the limited data available indicates that intake is relatively repeatable throughout an animal’s lifetime. For example, heifers with lower intake during the growing phase, tend to have lower intake as mature females, relative to their contemporaries. Therefore, it makes sense to put downward pressure on the trait as we strive to identify the most maternally profitable genetics for our customers.

While it can be controversial in respect to its accuracy, Milk is also a trait that can impact input costs. The Angus Association provides a tool called the “Optimal Milk Module” to help determine a Milk EPD range that is appropriate for your operation. Genetic needs for Milk vary regionally with different resource availability, but there are upper and lower boundaries that will cause issues regardless of environment.

Too little milk and calves will not reach their full potential for growth and marketability. Too much milk and you can create a high maintenance cowherd that will struggle reproductively without costly supplementation. More often than not, we find ourselves pushing the upper boundary for this trait in modern performance-oriented cattle. That being said, it is reasonable for us to apply negative selection pressure to bulls that fall above a certain Milk EPD threshold when selecting sires for purely maternal purposes.

By using the $M and $B indices provided by AAA, in conjunction with the added emphasis on DMI and Milk as described above, ABS has developed a selection index to rank bulls whose daughters should excel for maternal profitability.

While this discussion has been primarily focused on maternal traits, we recognize that maintaining adequate focus on the end-product value is necessary. Remember, utilizing female Sexcel to create your replacements provides you the opportunity to maximize performance and end-product value in the remainder of your calf crop, whether you sell at weaning or on the rail.

CROSSBREEDING FUNDAMENTALLY WORKS IN TWO WAYS:

UNDENIABLE BENEFITS

The benefits of hybrid vigor are undeniable. When created thoughtfully, crossbred progeny can exceed the productivity of their parents, often with less input cost. The icing on the cake is that the most marked impacts of crossbreeding tend to be on traits that are hardest to improve in purebred cattle. These traits are invaluable for maternal profitability. Characteristics like fertility, longevity, health, and fitness all benefit from hybrid vigor.

Table 1 depicts some well-known benefits of crossbreeding on maternal function.

CROSSBREEDING AT ITS BEST

There are several crossbreeding systems that can be used to take advantage of hybrid vigor. Each system has its pros and cons. The key to a successful crossbreeding system is it should be planned

The effect of crossbreeding is the most profound in a first cross of two purebred parents of different breeds with the resulting progeny known as an F1. This cross of unrelated individuals captures 100% of the available heterosis. The iconic F1 Hereford by Angus cross, “Black-Baldie”, is perhaps the most recognizable example. The Black Baldie female is legendary for her fertility, longevity, and efficiency.

Researchers at Oklahoma State University recently demonstrated that pregnant Black Baldie females consumed almost two pounds per day less dry matter as compared to straight-bred Angus females on a cow weight adjusted basis. While two pounds may seem insignificant on a given day, multiplying those two pounds across a cowherd and production year will get your attention. Crossbred females also consumed less but maintained a higher body condition score throughout the trial (Lalman, et al, 2019).

This is a great demonstration of breed complementarity at work in a cowherd. The F1 cross is ideal in terms of maximizing heterosis, but for producers breeding and developing their own replacements, it is nearly impossible to implement. Unfortunately, many producers cannot afford to keep or manage a nucleus of purebred females just for production F1 replacement heifers.

ROTATIONAL CROSSBREEDING SYSTEMS

For producers unable to maintain a system of producing F1 females, a rotational crossbreeding system can capture a majority of available heterosis year-after-year. A rotational crossbreeding program is manageable to implement, particularly with Sexcel female semen and a cowherd segmentation approach (ie. Sexcel 60/40 Synch).

In the breeding program, females selected to be bred with sexed semen are mated to a sire from the breed which represents the smallest portion of the female’s own breed composition. In simple terms using an Angus and Simmental system, females with a high percentage of Angus composition are mated to Simmental bulls, and high percentage Simmental females are bred to Angus. While it does require more management than a straight-bred herd, there are multiple tagging and identification approaches that can be used to simplify breeding decisions chute-side.

A 2-breed rotation can capture two-thirds of the available heterosis, and you can capture nearly 86% of the potential hybrid vigor by adding a third breed to the rotation. Adding more breeds to the rotation would continue to improve our utilization of hybrid vigor, but the reality is we struggle to find enough breeds with the combination of maternal traits we desire to incorporate.

While heterosis improves the productivity of resulting progeny, it cannot overcome the disadvantage of adding significantly inferior genetics to the mix. Adding too many breeds to the system can result in substantial phenotypic variation. Two and three breed rotations optimize retained heterosis, while allowing us to focus on progressive breeds with recognized maternal excellence.

A SIMPLE WAY TO UTILIZE HYBRID VIGOR

Perhaps, the simplest way to take advantage of hybrid vigor is to utilize composite-breed genetics. Traditionally, a composite was the result of a breeding program crossing two or more breeds over multiple generations to ensure phenotypic variations had been stabilized (i.e. Santa Gertrudis and Beefmaster). More recently, the terminology has been used more broadly to describe crossbred genetics, regardless of whether the composite has truly been stabilized (i.e. SimAngus™).

Utilizing a composite breed simplifies breeding decisions and necessary records because all females can be mated to the same “composite-breed” of sire. The only limitation is that we don’t fully capitalize on the benefits of hybrid vigor. A 2-breed composite retains only 50% of the possible heterosis. Nonetheless, composite breeds offer a good compromise between retained heterosis and ease of use.

ABS offers an exceptional lineup of maternally focused bulls in several breeds that fit the goals of nearly any operation. While we think of certain breeds bringing particular traits of interest to the table, there can be as much variation within breeds for given traits as there is between breeds. Individual bulls can help or hurt your breeding objectives, no matter the breed. For instance, Hereford cattle tend to have a reputation for being low maintenance, low intake cattle. Nonetheless, we can still identify Hereford sires with the potential to sire high appetite progeny, and conversely, we can identify sires from other breeds that can move the needle in the opposite direction.

Take home message is:

Don’t assume sires from a particular breed fit the established stereotype for that breed’s characteristics.

Do your homework and make sure the EPDs and indices match your expectations. Please note that the right sire selection decision is unique to every operation’s overall goal and labor and management availability.

The Terms govern the purchase, sale, and use of all bovine related products and services offered by ABS Global, Inc. or its affiliates (“ABS”), including without limitation: semen, sexed semen, embryos, and bovines; (“Germplasm”); Breeding Services; Genetic Services; udder care products; breeding certificates; and equipment or supplies related to any of the above (collectively, with the Germplasm, Breeding Services, and Genetic Services, the “Products”) and of first-generation progeny made from Germplasm (“Progeny”). Please read these Terms carefully, as your use or purchase, or your employees’ or representatives’ use or purchase (collectively or individually, “you”), of the Products and Progeny constitutes your confirmation and agreement be bound by these Terms.

1. USE. Products are approved for animal agriculture use only. You may not export Products or distribute, sell, or transfer Products to any third-party without the express written consent of ABS. You agree to only use Germplasm, in whole or in part, in animals wholly owned or controlled by you in the ordinary course of business. You may not without the prior written consent of ABS: reverse engineer, genotype, sequence, clone, reverse sort, genome edit, analyze or manipulate the Germplasm; or use Germplasm or the genetic materials contained in or derived from the Germplasm or Progeny, including any semen, oocytes, embryos, DNA, RNA, protein or other molecular or hereditary materials (“Genetic Materials”) for any research or development use, including in public or private research programs. Sexed semen may be used solely for single artificial insemination of a single bovine, with the intent to produce a single offspring. All rights in Germplasm and Progeny not expressly granted under this Section 2 are reserved by ABS and all other uses are strictly prohibited without ABS’ prior written consent.

BEEF PROGENY:

(i) NuEra Germplasm (sold as NuEra® or InFocus®) may only be used to create a terminal crossbred Progeny (beef x dairy or beef x beef cross) that is sold, marketed, leased, traded, or otherwise transferred into the beef supply chain for the purpose of slaughter.

(ii) All other ABS beef germplasm may be used to create progeny that can be used or sold for any purpose, including as breeding stock or terminal animals.

2. WARRANTIES AND LIABILITY. ABS warrants that Germplasm, udder care products, breeding certificates, and equipment and supplies sold by ABS conform to the description on the individual Product package and the Breeding Services and Genetics Services will be performed with reasonable skill in accordance with generally acceptable industry standards. Except as otherwise set out in these Terms, all Products are provided by ABS “AS IS”. EXCEPT FOR THE WARRANTY SET FORTH IN THIS SECTION, ABS MAKES NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCTS OR THE PROGENY, INCLUDING ANY (A) WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY; (B) WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE; OR (C) WARRANTY AGAINST INFRINGEMENT OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF A THIRD PARTY; WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED BY LAW, COURSE OF DEALING, COURSE OF PERFORMANCE, USAGE OF TRADE OR OTHERWISE. The warranty described herein is contingent upon your proper use of the Products in compliance with any product manuals or instructions, industry standards, these Terms, and any reasonable instructions from ABS in respect to the return or destruction of defective Products. These warranties do not cover any Products which have been modified in any manner or subject to abuse, neglect, misuse or alteration.

3.LIABILITY DISCLAIMER: ABS, ITS AFFILIATES, AND THEIR EMPLOYEES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, AND DISTRIBUTORS (“ABS PARTIES”) ENTIRE LIABILITY ON ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE PRODUCTS OR PROGENY (WHETHER FROM BREACH OF WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY, NEGLIGENCE, OR FIDUCIARY DUTY) SHALL NOT EXCEED THE PURCHASE PRICE PAID TO ABS FOR THE PRODUCTS THAT ALLEGEDLY CAUSED THE LOSS, OR IF ABS SO ELECTS, REPLACEMENT OF THE PRODUCT. IN NO EVENT SHALL ANY ABS PARTY BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, EXEMPLARY, CONSEQUENTIAL, MULTIPLIED DAMAGES OR LOST PROFITS SUSTAINED BY YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON, OR FOR ANY FAILURE OF COWS TO CALVE. YOU AGREE NOT TO ASSERT ANY NON-CONTRACTUAL CLAIM UNDER STATE LAW ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR PURCHASE OR USE OF ANY PRODUCT. YOU ASSUME ALL RISK AND LIABILITY ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE, HANDLING, OR STORAGE OF PRODUCTS OR RELATED TO DEFECTS IN ANY STORAGE CONTAINERS OR TANKS CONTAINING PRODUCTS.

4. LIQUID NITROGEN NOTICE: You shall transfer all Germplasm from shipping tanks to your own nitrogen tanks immediately upon receipt. You are responsible for providing and maintaining liquid nitrogen tanks, including nitrogen levels and tank operation at all times. ABS may provide liquid nitrogen services to customers as an ancillary service. Such services are provided on an “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” basis. Without limiting the foregoing, the ABS Parties shall not be responsible for any loss and/or damages, direct or indirect, arising out contract, tort, or fiduciary duty by providing liquid nitrogen to you. To the extent allowable by law, all liability for the supply, maintenance, or servicing of liquid nitrogen storage tanks is expressly disclaimed by ABS Parties.

5. DISTRIBUTORS. ABS contracts with independent contractors, sales agents, authorized representatives, or other distributors (“Distributors”) from whom you may purchase Products directly. Distributors are not the agents, employees, or servants of ABS and are not authorized to contract for, or on behalf of, ABS. ABS does not control the Products after transfer to a Distributor, and disclaims all liability for the Products, services, actions, or work provided to you by Distributors.

6. INDEMNITY. You agree to defend, indemnify and hold all ABS Parties harmless from any and all claims, liabilities, damages, costs and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, in any way arising from, related to or in connection with (a) your use of ABS Products; (b) your breach or alleged breach of these Terms; (c) your violation of any third-party right, including any intellectual property, confidentiality, property, or privacy right; (d) your violation of any laws, rules, regulations, codes, statutes, ordinances or orders of any governmental and quasi-governmental authorities, including all regulatory, administrative and legislative authorities; and (e) any misrepresentation made by you.

7. MODIFICATION. ABS may revise these Terms from time to time and will post the most current version on our website. You are bound by any revision and should review these Terms periodically. If any provision of these Terms is deemed invalid, void, or unenforceable for any reason, that provision shall be severed and shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any remaining provision, and the parties shall substitute for the invalid provision a provision that most closely approximates the intent and economic effect of the invalid provision.
