Profit from Genetic Progress

2025 BREEDER’S JOURNAL

At a Glance

Our Spring Breeder’s Journal is a highlight every year. We get the chance to showcase new sire acquisitions as well as dig into important and relevant topics. This spring is no different as we have acquired some of the most exciting bulls to ever come to ABS. They fit the needs of today’s producers and provide new mating options for our long-time customers. These sires not only offer great overall data but also bring with them the traits that just make cattle work.

We again focus in on Making Matings with Intent in this edition. While the choices you have for what to breed for are more diverse today than ever, you also have more tools available to you than before. The options that sexed semen provides to commercial and purebred producers change the game. With sexed semen, you can laser focus the product you create toward what makes your program work. The industry may look different, but our goal for more than 80 years remains unchanged: we want to help you achieve your breeding objectives and profit from genetic progress. Thank you for your business and interest in ABS; we value the opportunity to help you and your operation!

Selecting the Right Bull

In the world of beef genetics, discussions around bull selection often drift towards “popular” bulls. We regularly get the following questions:

» Who’s your most popular new bull this year?

» Who’s the best bull to use on daughters of (insert name of your favorite bull)?

While those are reasonable questions, the process of selecting the ideal bull is a bit more complex and unique to your individual operation. Why? The reason stems from the sheer volume of information available to help make these decisions today.

In the Angus breed alone, there are 31 different EPDs and indexes and 3 more EPDs in the pipeline for release later this spring. EPDs and indexes are powerful selection tools that have played a significant role in the impeccable efficiency with which we produce quality beef in the U.S. today.

Unfortunately, these tools are only effective when they are used in the right way. Not every EPD is relevant to every breeding decision, and knowing what trait to focus on can be confusing. Whether you are selecting a new AI sire or simply in the market for a new bull, answering the following questions will help guide you to the EPDs and indexes that are relevant to your needs.

EPD = Expected Progeny Difference, a numeric predictor used to help select for individual measurable traits important to beef production.

Index = Applies the appropriate economic weighting to multiple EPDs at the same time, simplifying selection decisions requiring emphasis on multiple traits. Can be focused on Maternal, Terminal, or All-Purpose traits.

WILL YOU KEEP AND DEVELOP YOUR OWN REPLACEMENT HEIFERS?

If your answer to this is yes, then a great place to start is with a Maternal Index. Remember, indexes weigh the economic importance of multiple traits simultaneously. The most maternally focused indexes from multiple breeds are listed in Table 1. To further refine your maternal selection decision, the individual trait EPDs listed in the Table 1a may be worth consideration. If your answer to this question is no, you can and should disregard the traits in these tables as you select your next bull.

A common answer to this question is “I sell my calves at weaning.” The simplest solution in this scenario is to focus on bulls with higher Weaning Weight (WW) EPDs. However, if your answer to the question is “I sell at weaning and I would like to build a reputable set of cattle with interest from repeat buyers,” a better place to start is with a Terminal Index.

These indexes ensure that the person who feeds and/or harvests your calves has a positive outcome by appropriately weighting the importance of post-weaning growth, efficiency, and carcass traits. Terminal traits are strongly correlated to weaning growth, so finding a sire that excels for both is not challenging.

If you feed cattle to finish, sell cattle on the rail, or market directly to consumers, Terminal Indexes should unquestionably be part of your selection criteria (See Tables 2 and 2a).

ARE YOU BREEDING VIRGIN HEIFERS?

This question may have historically been the first to come to mind. Ultimately, this question is about the importance of Calving Ease Direct (CED) in your selection decision. CED is an indicator of the ease with which progeny of a bull will be born from virgin heifers. While CED is still of vital importance in breeding heifers, the availability of highly proven sires that suit this need today is much broader and more diverse than it has been historically.

So, if breeding heifers is part of your operation, start with bulls that suit your needs identified above, then sort them for a CED EPD that fits your needs. A higher CED is better when it comes to heifers, and bulls with higher accuracy for this trait are your most reliable option. If you are only breeding mature cows, CED is a much less important selection criterion.

ARE THERE ISSUES IN YOUR COW HERD THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT?

Finally, let’s address any issues with what are commonly referred to as convenience or foundational traits. These are things like foot, udder, and temperament problems. Problems that can create management headaches and economic losses

FOUNDATIONAL/CONVENIENCE TRAIT EPDs ( Table 4)

Traits

Tools to manage foot structure and quality Udder Traits Teat,

Angle

of

Predicts the ability of cattle to shed winter hair coat

to help improve temperament of cattle

The EPDs listed in Table 4 can help you address many of these problems. If you don’t have issues with these traits, bulls near breed average for these EPDs should keep you out of the ditches. On the other hand, if you already have a problem in one or more of these areas, find a breed leader for that trait and let him go to work fixing the problem in your next calf crop.

Ultimately, with the diverse selection of bulls and the broad spectrum of EPDs and indexes at our disposal, you should find multiple bulls that fit nearly any operation’s unique answers to these questions. ABS Bull Search is an excellent tool to help you filter and sort bulls. Otherwise, reach out to your local ABS representative to help work through the process of finding the right bull for YOU!

Let Sexcel® Help You Complete the Profitability Puzzle

The performance and quality bar for your calf crop continues to rise, while interest rates and input costs dictate a continued focus on controlling costs at the farm or ranch gate. At times, these demands can seem to be at odds with one another. While the cow remains the productive engine of the beef industry, she is only one piece of the puzzle.

Efficiently producing a high-quality eating experience is the business we are all in, whether we feed the cattle ourselves or not. Luckily, we have the technology to address the seemingly contradictory goals of different industry segments. Sexed semen is the missing puzzle piece—with the power to optimize maternal and terminal mating decisions concurrently and help you MAKE MATINGS WITH INTENT.

SEXED SEMEN BREEDING STRATEGIES

Sexed semen empowers producers to more precisely control the outcome of nearly every mating. With the broad availability of both male and female sexed semen from the ABS Global lineup, there is no reason progressive beef producers cannot build a breeding strategy incorporating sexed semen and genetics precisely tuned to their desired outcome. Beef producers across the country are latching on to sexed semen to achieve their herd goals in creative ways. Ultimately, 60 percent or more of any given herd are likely good candidates to be inseminated with a straw of sexed semen. Following are just a few of the strategies that producers can employ to leverage the power of combining genetics and technology.

USING 60/40 TO SKEW BULL-TO-HEIFER RATIO OF YOUR CALF CROP

Whether you are aiming to generate more replacements, increase the number of high-value steer calves, or generate additional elite seedstock bulls or heifers from your existing cow base, the 60/40 concept is the place to start. It is a safe bet that 60 percent or more of a group of well-managed females will display estrus in response to a given synchronization protocol.

These cows that display estrus are ideal candidates to be bred with sexed semen, as it has been demonstrated that the pregnancy rate to sexed semen is significantly higher in females that display estrus by the time of insemination. Breeding the remaining 40 percent of a group of cows that do not display estrus with a straw of strategically selected conventional semen helps protect the overall first-service conception rate.

Putting this into practice can help a producer shift the sex skew of their calf crop to 60-65 percent of the desired sex. Consider the additional value generated from your desired calf gender and then think about what it would be worth to have 10-15 percent more of them in your calf crop.

(All cows are synchronized and fitted with Estrotect™ patches.)
Females that display estrus with activated patches are inseminated with a straw of Sexcel.

Let Sexcel® Help You Complete the Profitability Puzzle

GOING ALL-IN WITH SEXCEL

For some producers, the difference in value generated from one sex of calf to another is so significant that maximizing that portion of their calf crop has become their target. These producers understand that while inseminating every cow in a given group with sexed semen may not maximize first service conception rate, it has the potential to push the calf crop to a skew rate of 70 percent or more of the desired calf sex. The likelihood of a successful outcome in this scenario is significantly improved by ‘stacking the deck’ for fertility in the group and controlling as many variables as possible. Some key considerations for achieving a positive outcome with sexed semen are in the table below.

SEXED SEMEN RECOMMENDATIONS

» For best results, only use in females that have displayed estrus.

» Target less than 5 minutes from thaw to insemination.

» Ideally, inseminate 16-22 hours after the onset of estrus.

» ‘Stack the deck’ for fertility by using in mature females with good BCS and adequate time post-calving.

» Consider protocols with increased estrus response rate and/or some level of heat detection.

» Utilize estrus detection aids.

USING BOTH MALE AND FEMALE SEXCEL TO CREATE A PRECISION CALF CROP

For many small to medium-sized commercial operations, deploying a breeding strategy that incorporates Female Sexcel, Male Sexcel, and conventional semen to generate a precision calf crop may be a good fit. When Female Sexcel on the right bull is used on the right cows, the success rate in terms of generating ‘keeper’ heifers is very high. It’s realistically possible to generate the necessary number of replacement heifers with as few as 35 percent of the first service matings.

When employing the 60/40 Synch concept, you are left with 25 percent or more of a group of cows as excellent candidates for male sexed semen to help add value to the terminal portion of your calf crop. With proper emphasis on maternal and terminal traits in genetics used, the end result can be a targeted number of replacement heifer calves precisely designed for your unique production system and a set of marketable/feedable calves with exceptional terminal performance and value.

THE ABS PHILOSOPHY

We believe there is a unique genetic management approach for each customer and herd. With the broad spectrum of genetics and technology available, there is no reason every female shouldn’t be bred to raise her best calf every year. Make the most out of your AI program by thoughtfully selecting matings that ensure your profitability. Leverage real-world experience behind the ABS shield to help put the right puzzle pieces together and MAKE MATINGS WITH INTENT.

Together, We Make Matings with Intent

We trust and respect our ABS Representative and look to him to help us make our breeding decisions. We look to the specialists to keep us on track and improving. If you want good genetics and to save heifers, I recommend Sexcel. The product seems to be very accurate and has met our expectations.

– Dan Blower, Blowers Farm, NE

Sexcel is a game changer for us. High genetic merit Angus bulls are our bread and butter. With the strong availability of male-sexed semen at ABS, it is a simple process for us to pick the bull that fits our needs genetically and simply produce more of our desired product. We now routinely achieve a 60 percent ratio of bull calves each year.
