LAKE FOREST COLLEGE ACADEMIC CONNECTION Mike Dau

It started innocently enough in the Spring of 1967 after having read an article in ACE handball magazine about two outstanding Jr. players from the Bronx, Wes and Willie Yee. The college was in the final stages of constructing a new sports facility that would include three handball courts and a decision had been made to organize an intercollegiate team.

Davidson protege via Flamingo Park (Fla.) where Bob spent his winter months. With the graduation of the Yee’s in 1972 two other DeWitt Clinton alums joined the Forester ranks, Ray Estevez and Mickey Guzman. They were the spark plugs in capturing three successive intercollegiate team championships, 1974, 1975, and 1976. Another N.Y.C. player of that period was Artie Diemar (Manhattan Prep) who the won college’s first intercollegiate

QUJHO’s Mike Watson. Jai Ragoo (Brooklyn Tech) Noel Shurak and Satra Wasserman (Bronx H.S. of Science), Keith Vassall (Brooklyn Tech), Ferrence Dominguez (New Town) and most recently Billy O’Donnell (St. Francis Prep) and Jon Iglesias (Forest Hills). The Foresters have enjoyed a great deal of success with this N.Y.C. transfusion all who have made major contributions toward winning intercollegiate team championships 5 out of the last 6 years. It should be obvious to anyone that without attracting the New York contingent of Jr. players over the last 37 years many of the 27 national intercollegiate titles achieved at Lake Forest simply would not have happened. And the search continues for players from the metropolitan area who seek an outstanding educational opportunity and a handball program with a tradition of excellence.

HIGHLIGHTS

Coach Mike Dau and the 1999 Lake Forest Handball Team featuring ICHA Travel Team members Keith Vassall, Satra Wasserman and Jai Ragoo

In seeking experienced players I contacted the Yee brothers coach at the Castle Hill Beach Club, Bob Davidson, and then followed up with their High School coach at DeWitt Clinton, Neil Seiden. And the rest is history as the Yee twins became the foundation of the handball program at Lake Forest College. Willie became our first national intercollegiate champion winning the A Singles title in 1969 and Wes followed up with successive Open singles titles in 1971 and 1972. The Yee brothers were the prime force in L.F.C. winning their first team championship in 1971. Another fine player of the same era with a New York connection was Steve Jamron, a

doubles title with a player from Florida, Ray Prosser. It should be mentioned that there were several outstanding New York Jr. players that simply “got away” but not without me trying hard to convince them of a Lake Forest education, most prominently Steve Lott, Ken Ginty and later on Eric Klarman. In spite of not landing them they all have been helpful over the years in recommending Jr. prospects. Throughout the 1980’s and the early 90’s there was a dry spell of New Yorkers on the team roster but in the middle 90’s a resurgence occurred with the help of Inner City Handball mentor Paul Williams and

THE PERFECT GAME

Message from the Founder and President I have been playing handball in NYC recreationally for 37 years and competitively for 33 years. It was after a decade of meeting handball players in various parts of the country that I realized that every teen who plays the sport should experience all the good health, camaraderie, highly competitive environment and unending fun that the inexpensive sport of handball could offer. In 1991 I founded the Inner City Handball Association. Its mission was to spread the joy of organized (USHA-based) handball to the inner city communities of New York City. Fourteen years later the mission is basically the same except with the help of the USHA, ICHA has been able to inspire teen players to pursue their athletic aspirations in Boston, Florida, Philadelphia, Wales (United Kingdom), London (United Kingdom) and Ireland. New York City is the only place in the world with over 2000 public one wall handball courts. Additionally NYC has a little

over 100 private four wall courts and no regulation three wall courts. I hope to see at least four tournament regulation 3-wall sites in NYC in the next five years. New York handball players are blessed to have so many courts but many of us take them for granted. Year after year outdoor courts throughout the city are replaced by basketball courts, rugby fields, kiddie playgrounds and various other community needed venues. Indoor courts are replaced by squash courts, rock climbing walls, basketball courts, and split level aerobics rooms. Although these other activities need venues, they should not come at the expense of handball. Preserving handball venues is only one reason why organized handball is needed and needs your support. The USHA preserves our game nationally. ICHA preserves our game locally. There are

over 100,000 teen athletes who play recreational handball in New York City. Exposing these teens to all forms of handball on local and international levels with limited venues is a major task, especially for a volunteer based organization such as ICHA. Over the next few years the ICHA Board of Directors and I will continue to work hard to promote the game, provide academic / work-related/handball opportunities to teens and college students, preserve existing courts, lobby for outdoor three wall courts and an indoor multi- court one wall facility. ICHA needs New York handball players to become members, to contribute to our development fund, and to volunteer when asked (but please do not wait until asked). Until next time thank you all for your past support.

New UK Association Inner City Fives Based in London I am an English Fives player and for the last two years I have worked for Teach First, an education charity in London designed to attract graduates into some of the city’s most challenging schools. Each year Teach First organizes a School Project competition where all participants are invited to submit an idea which they think might change an aspect of education within the capital. The winners receive funding to implement their projects. Having played handball in Ireland and been impressed by the Inner City Handball Association (ICHA) in New York, I put forward the idea of introducing One-Wall to London as a affordable way for all London schools to tackle the problem of a lack of sports facilities and youth inactivity. I suggested that One-Wall in London could have the same impact as it has in New York. The idea reached the final where I pitched to a panel of business leaders and won the competition, and funding of £1,750. Our strategy was to introduce One-Wall to individual London boroughs, focusing all our resources on making that borough a success before replicating the model across the capital. The first borough was Croydon, the borough in which I taught, and we organized a competition for the end of the summer term. Using the funding we offered all Croydon schools free coaching sessions from a Fives Federation coach and encouraged them to mark out One-Wall courts in their schools. Six schools and over 500 pupils received coaching over the term and three schools now have courts. The competition was held in July and received entries from 50 pupils from four schools. As a result Croydon borough now has a multisports coach who has responsibility for coaching and running One-Wall in the borough and we hope to include more Croydon schools this year. From the beginning the idea has been supported fully by the Fives Federation which oversees all versions of Fives in Britain. To utilize their coaching and playing resources, we have called the sport One-Wall Fives, rather than handball, and will exist alongside Eton Fives and Rugby Fives. Similarly, our association is the Inner City Fives Association. We then hope to get

Teens warming up for the first United Kingdom High School One-wall tournament

Director James Toop (center) briefing the teens before the start of the matches

our One-Wall players to link in with and play the other versions of Fives. I also contacted Paul Williams with a view to receiving his ideas and support for OneWall in London and we were very pleased to welcome him for one week in July. He supported the competition and played an exhibition game which he won, despite the children’s partisan support. Paul also met with members of the Fives Federation and played Eton and Rugby Fives. It was great for the Fives players to learn more about the World Council and also for Paul to discover that there were not many individual Fives associations in Britain, but one unified federation. I will be contacting all English Fives players this year with a view to forming an English team to participate in next year’s World Championships in Edmonton. As the project enters its second season, the borough model is now being introduced as to Kensington and Chelsea, so we have achieved our target of expanding to a second borough. Work continues in Croydon and we have already begun

targeting schools for a third borough. The other side of our work includes approaching local education authorities and businesses for sponsorship and support. Government and corporate social responsibility policies in Britain are now strongly targeting sport as a way of tackling social problems in London and we hope that by stressing primarily how One-Wall Fives can do this, we will attract their interest. I have already had meeting with the government’s education unit and a promotional DVD is in production which we can begin sending to potential sponsors after Christmas. Our plan is that in a few years there will be schools in ten boroughs playing OneWall in London and we can then begin to start sending regular English teams to participate in World and European Championships. One-Wall will also be an excellent way of promoting and expanding existing forms of Fives in Britain. If anyone would like more information about One-Wall Fives in London or can support in any way then please contact me at jamestoop@hotmail.com.

RESULTS

Long Island Open In what at first looked like a possible upset, Kendell Lewis beat Jai Ragoo in the Open Singles finals of the ICHA Long Island Open Tournament held at Rockville Center’s Sportset from January 14-16. In the match, Ragoo led Lewis 8-1 in the tiebreaker before Lewis won the game and the match with an 11-8 score. Lewis and his partner, Fred Torres, also took the Open Doubles, defeating Raul Retian and Danny Vera, 21-20 and 21-15. Other matches saw James Brady defeat Jonathan Iglesias in the B Singles and Robert Sandler and Mark Glatzer score a win over Danny Yee and Iglesias in the B Doubles. Meanwhile, the C Singles went to Allan Sanchez, who beat Raphael Matta Jr., and the C Doubles went to Matta and Henry Hill over Lou Gottlieb and Frank Drost. In the age categories, Danny Maroney took Glenn Hall in a tiebreaker in the 50 Singles while the 50 Doubles went to Anthony Barone and Tom Dougton over Mike Krell and Vincent Ruggiero. Lloyd Darling defeated Gary Grossman for the 60 Singles. The three-day event was managed by Fred Turbee Sr., who was assisted by an ICHA committee of Ray Boni, Neil Flaum, Phil Fusco, Richard Hanley, Fred Turbee Jr. and Gil Shore—some of whom played in the matches; none of whom made it into the highlights film. Turbee Sr. guided the event from its planning stage to the awarding of trophies on the contest’s last day. Boni and Flaum did marathon refereeing—a difficult and sometimes thankless job. (Both Michael Schneider Sr. and Sydel Smith, volunteer referees, could attest to that difficulty.) The tournament did see the cancellation of eight scheduled matches—two caused by illness and six cancelled because scheduled players neither appeared nor called. In one case, Byron Ortiz gamely stepped in for one missing player, allowing an Open Doubles match to proceed. Turbee Sr. said the staff of the host club, Sportset, was very accommodating and helped the tournament run smoothly. Simi-

Stan Zavoyskiy, last year’s 15 & under champion made history this year by capturing both 17 & 19 Boys singles titles. Zavoyskiy is the first teen athlete in 12 years to capture three singles championships in three different age categories. This was no easy feat especially as Zavoyskiy faced off with 18 year finalist Emmanuel Fuentes. Their final match was one of Open Championship recognition. Fuentes just barely edged out Zavoyskiy winning the first game 21-20. Fuentes quickly took the lead in the second game with a score of 9-5. As the sun quickly set, Fuentes realized he could no longer see the ball and asked to call the match on account of darkness. The fatigue Zavoyskiy agreed. The next day the match continued and the refreshed Zavoyskiy beat Fuentes 21-13. The eleven point tie-breaker was just as exciting and intense as the previous two games. Zavoyskiy took the lead, but Fuentes quickly caught up. In the end a few ace serves, rollout killshots and

strategically placed volley shots by Zavoyskiy made the difference. Zavoysky won 11-8. It’s the beginning of spring and so begins the kickoff of the handball tournament season. The 12th Annual High School Spring Meet was held at the Central Park, North Meadow handball courts in Manhattan. Hosted as always by the Inner City Handball Association and sponsored in part by the United States Handball Association in cooperation with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation this event attracted 94 teen entries from 11 high schools. Twenty of these teen athletes became new USHA/ ICHA members. In the Girls division Fort Hamilton dominated the 19 & under Girls division while Boy’s and Girls High School took control of the 17 & under Singles and Doubles. This year’s competition introduced a new breed of high school competitors. Both boys and girls athletes have their hopes set on victory this day and victory in the upcoming Junior and Adult nationals. Some seek to qualify for the ICHA Teen Travel Team set to compete in 2006 World Championships in Edmundton Canada. All volunteered to referee games and run the event. Special thanks to Bushwick H.S. teacher Fred Coles, Fred Turbee, George Figueroa, Veronica Figueroa, Stan Zavoyskiy and ICHA Board member Karl Muchow for volunteering there time to keep the tournament on time.

NYC Mayor’s Cup The 11th annual NYC Mayor’s Cup Handball Championship was held July 910, 2005 by the Inner City Handball Association (ICHA) in partnership with the United States Handball Association (USHA), NYC Sports Commission, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and NYC Parks and Recreation. Preliminary matches were held at Coney Island, Brooklyn and Central Park, Manhattan. The finals were held at Orchard Beach, Bronx. The Mayor’s Cup, one of the most anticipated preludes to the USHA One Wall Nationals, distributed a combined prize purse of $4000.00 to this year’s Pro and Pro Am Champions. Thanks to the 230 entries in this year’s Mayor’s Cup and the generous contributions from ICHA and USHA members, ICHA was able to present a $2000.00 check from the tournament proceeds to Andrea Grahlman on behalf of Lorraine Jacobs for the Jim Jacobs Research Fund for Leukemia/Lymphoma Cancer. Many thanks to volunteer site directors Karl Muchow, Peter Garcia, Lian Chin, Rob and Indira Golan for a great job running the Saturday preliminary sites. A special thanks to the players and volunteers whose efforts made this tournament possible. Congratulations to all the 2005 NYC Mayor’s Cup Champions.

Next Generation of Champions Lopierre, O’Donnell, Iglesias and Zavoyskiy the familiar names from the roster of 2005 junior handball champions were all absent from this year’s Fifth Annual Junior Big Blue Championships. The door was left open to the next generation of handball champions to sneak in. These new champions decided not sneak in but instead stormed in and claimed their championship titles. From the 13 & under division to the 19 & under divisions the competition was fierce. This year’s Junior Big Blue Championship attracted 141 entries (98 teens). Thirty five of these teen athletes became new USHA/ICHA members. Who will become the next generation of New York based one, three and four wall Champions? Remember the names you read today. Many will be the Handball Champions of tomorrow. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the United States Handball Association, St. Albans Handball Association and the Inner City Handball Association this tournament was a very successful, safe and fun event.
