summer season, it’s essential to adapt your hair care routine We countdown crucial summer hair care tips to help you maintain luscious locks that can withstand the heat and humidity.

5

A haircut or trim at the beginning of summer is a smart move to get rid of any split ends that may have developed. Regular trims support healthier hair growth and maintain a fresh, polished look throughout the season.

6

CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIR PR ODUCTS

Select hair products that cater to the challenges of humidity and frizz, which are more prevalent in the summer. Lightweight, moisturising products will help keep your hair manageable and looking its best.

7

EAT FOR HEALTHY HAIR

Your diet plays a vital role in maintaining healthy hair. Include hair-friendly foods like fresh fruits, leafy greens, and nuts in your meals. Consider supplements such as biotin or omega-3 fatty acids if your diet lacks these essential nutrients.

8

PR OTECT YOUR HAIR DURING WORKOUTS

Minimise the use of heat styling tools during the summer to prevent damage. Embrace heat-free styles like beachy waves, braids, or buns, which not only protect your hair but also suit the laid-back, summery vibe.

Exercise is essential year-round, but during summer, the combination of sweat and sun can be harsh on your hair. Protect it by securing your hair in a loose bun or ponytail, and use moisture-wicking headbands to keep sweat away from your locks.

With the arrival of summer, it’s crucial to adjust your hair care routine to meet the season’s unique demands. By following these essential summer hair care tips, you can

ensure that your locks remain healthy, vibrant, and ready to shine in the sun. With proper care and attention, you’ll enjoy luscious, sizzle-proof hair throughout the season.

SKIN CARE

THE SECRETS TO

flawless skin

Smooth and even skin is a coveted asset for many, but various factors can lead to textured skin. These skin concerns can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin type, fortunately, advancements in skincare technologies and products offer effective solutions to improve and smooth uneven skin. We investigate the reasons behind these skin concerns and look into the latest innovations and skincare products designed to help you achieve a radiant complexion. BY ANJE HILL

THE CULPRITS BEHIND BUMPY SKIN AND PORE PROBLEMS

Irregular skin tone is a broad term including various forms of skin discolouration, such as sunspots or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can also encompass irregular skin texture, including dry patches, the collection of dead skin cells, fine lines, or blotchiness. Durban-based medical practitioner, Dr Jihada Cassim says,“Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores can be attributed to a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.” AGEING The initial appearance of visible signs of ageing can be disconcerting for many. For most ageing starts to

manifest in their twenties and can be amplified by a blend of internal and external influences. “As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, which can lead to a loss of skin elasticity, resulting in larger-looking pores and uneven texture,” she explains. EXCESSIVE SUN EXPOSURE Overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can damage the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres, leading to premature ageing and uneven texture. Sun damage can also make pores appear larger. GENETICS AND GENDER Your genetics plays a significant role in determining your skin’s texture and

pore size. If your parents have large pores or textured skin, you may be more prone to these concerns. Men have been reported to have more pores, higher sebum production and larger pore size than women. POOR SKINCARE HABITS “Using harsh, pore-clogging products, or not following a proper skincare routine, can exacerbate textural irregularities and pore size. To pinpoint the specific causes of uneven skin texture and enlarged pores in your case, it is best to consult an aesthetic doctor or a dermatologist. They can perform a comprehensive skin analysis and provide personalised recommendations,” explains Dr Cassim.

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

31

SKIN CARE

OILY SKIN Excess sebum production can cause the skin to become oily and prone to clogged pores. These clogged pores can appear enlarged and give the skin a rough texture. ACNE AND SCARRING Acne breakouts can lead to inflammation, scarring, and textural irregularities on the skin’s surface. Pockmarks and acne scars can make the skin appear uneven. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Pollution and environmental toxins can accumulate on the skin’s surface, contributing to dullness and roughness. PIGMENTATION “Uneven skin tone generally occurs when you find pigmentation developing,” says medical practitioner and owner of Skin Solutions Dr. Parushinee Naidoo. “The most common causes of pigmentation and uneven skin tone are sun damage and hormonal issues. You need to discern whether it’s mild pigmentation or hyperpigmentation. Hormonal pigmentation such as Melasma can be stimulated when you go through different hormonal phases of pregnancy, menopause or chronic hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. Other causes of uneven skin tone can be inflammatory, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation conditions such as acne, eczema or even rosacea,” she explains.

TEXTURE TROUBLES? TACKLE THEM WITH PROVEN SOLUTIONS!

Assessing the Root Causes. Before embarking on a journey to improve your skin’s appearance, it’s vital to identify the underlying factors responsible for these issues. Addressing the root cause is crucial for effective treatment. For

32

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

instance, if acne scarring and hyperpigmentation are at the core of your skin concerns, it’s wise to seek professional guidance to address the primary causes of acne. If you’re dealing with conditions like eczema or dry, irritated skin, consider factors such as microbiome disruption, harsh household products, or environmental imbalances that might be triggering these texturerelated problems. Exfoliation for a Smoother Surface. The removal of dead skin cells is a key step in achieving smoother skin. Regular exfoliation, whether through dedicated scrubs, sonic cleaning brushes, or chemical exfoliants, can help target areas with texture. It’s important to be cautious with physical exfoliation products, ensuring they are not too abrasive or used too frequently, as this can lead to overproduction of oil and skin damage. Opt for formulas with spherical particles and adhere to a twice-a-week exfoliation routine. Alternatively, chemical exfoliants are a gentler option that can deliver consistent results.

Sun Protection Matters. Sun exposure is a known culprit behind uneven skin texture. Dr Naidoo says, “When it comes to skincare habits that can help you prevent enlarged pores and pigmentation the most important thing you can do for prevention has to be sun protection SPF or sunscreen. Not only does sunscreen help protect you from skin cancer, but it also helps suppress the Melanin stimulation that happens in response to UV exposure. Sunscreen also helps limit the ageing process or the oxidative effect of the sun on the skin thereby helping prevent elastin and collagen breakdown from the sun. So SPF is the number one product you can add to your skincare routine to help you prevent both pigmentation, uneven skin tone and the appearance of large pores.” Harnessing Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a multifaceted ingredient that not only helps even out skin tone but also smooths skin. This potent antioxidant provides both reparative and protective

SKIN CARE

treatments to avoid mishaps. For a more cost-effective approach, consider using at-home peel masks, ensuring they are gentle and non-abrasive to protect your skin. Addressing Scars and Scarring. To combat uneven skin texture effectively, it’s imperative to address existing scars, especially those with raised or discoloured textures. Achieving visible results requires patience and consistency. Utilise products specifically designed for scar treatment, following their instructions diligently to witness improvements over several months.

benefits against environmental damage. Defending your skin against further damage is essential to prevent future texture issues, while the restorative properties of Vitamin C can enhance skin suppleness and reduce pigmentation, scar tissue, and age spots. The Power of Peels. As we age, the natural shedding of dead skin cells becomes less efficient, leading to dullness and uneven texture. Chemical peels offer an effective way to remove the top layer of skin, but it’s advisable to consult a professional for in-office

Incorporate a Retinoid. Many dermatologists recommend the inclusion of topical retinoids and retinol in skincare routines to address uneven skin texture. These vitamin A derivatives are potent agents for promoting collagen production and enhancing epidermal turnover. As a result, they can significantly improve skin texture, and tone, and reduce hyperpigmentation. While retinols are available in over-the-counter products, stronger retinoids necessitate a prescription for use. Micro-needling for Quick Results. Micro-needling has gained popularity for its ability to produce rapid and

noticeable improvements in scarring and uneven texture. This process involves using small needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, prompting the skin to initiate a repair response. “When it comes to treating enlarged pores the best treatment treating this condition is micro-needling and I find the SkinPen is the best micro-needling device for giving you the maximum collagen stimulation and guaranteed results”, says Dr Naidoo with practices in Ballito and Umhlanga. Mirco-needling boosts collagen production and reduces the appearance of pores, acne scars, and fine lines, resulting in a smoother overall texture. Exploring Laser Resurfacing. For individuals dealing with persistent texture issues, laser treatments offer promising results, although they tend to be more aggressive and expensive. Like micro-needling, laser treatments trigger the body’s natural healing process by creating micro-wounds in the skin. This process can minimise the appearance of scars, reduce hyperpigmentation, eliminate sun damage, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and tighten loose skin. Achieving smooth and even textured skin is a common skincare goal, and with the latest innovations in skincare technologies and products, it’s more attainable than ever. While genetics and ageing play a role in skin texture, addressing the causes and implementing an effective skincare routine can lead to significant improvements. Whether you opt for retinoids, chemical peels, microneedling, or other treatments, it’s essential to consult a skincare professional to determine the best approach for your unique needs. With dedication and the right tools, you can enjoy the benefits of smoother, more radiant skin.

AND OVERALL VITALITY While everyday demands take centre stage, there’s a subtle aspect often overlooked—one that silently offers insights into our overall well-being. Our nails—seemingly ordinary—tell a quiet yet meaningful story about our internal health. We explore the intriguing relationship between nail health and our body’s well-being with insights from a trusted GP and expert in women and child health, Dr. Carmen Briner, also known as the beloved @momdoc. NAIL HEALTH

THE NATURE OF NAILS

Nails are made of a tough protein called keratin, the same substance in our skin and hair. They serve as protective layers, safeguarding our fingertips and toe tips. Healthy nails should have a smooth surface, even colouring, and a strong structure. They mirror proper hydration, sufficient nutrition, and overall good health. The condition of our nails reflects the intricate balance of our body’s different systems. Dr Briner notes, “Our nails can tell us a lot about our health. Sudden nail colour, texture, or shape changes can indicate underlying issues. While they’re not definitive tools for diagnosis, these changes can prompt us to

consider our well-being and seek professional guidance if needed.” When your nails exhibit changes, it’s worth considering the bigger picture. Dr. Briner suggests paying attention to accompanying symptoms that might provide additional insights into your health. For instance, if your nails show signs of discolouration, along with

WHAT ARE YOUR NAILS TELLING YOU:

Peeling: If your nails are prone to peeling, it could signal a lack of moisture. Consider your exposure to water and chemicals and whether you use adequate moisturisers. Weak: Nails that easily bend or break might indicate a nutritional deficiency, possibly lacking vitamins like biotin or minerals like calcium and iron. These nutrients are essential for maintaining nail strength.

breathlessness or persistent coughing, it could be a signal to investigate potential respiratory concerns. Similarly, if nail changes coincide with fatigue and dizziness, it might prompt a closer examination of your cardiovascular health.

Ridges: Horizontal ridges, often called Beau’s lines, can be associated with illness or stress episodes interrupting nail growth. Vertical ridges, on the other hand, are usually harmless and can come with age. They can also hint at nutritional imbalances. Discolouration: Yellow or green nails might point towards fungal infections or underlying lung issues. If your nails appear blueish or purplish, it could indicate poor circulation or oxygenation, possibly related to respiratory or cardiovascular problems. White Spots: Those small white spots on your nails are usually harmless and are often a result of minor trauma; however, they could also indicate a zinc deficiency. Half-and-Half: If your nails have a white portion near the base and a pink or brownish portion near the tip, known as half-and-half nails, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional. These nails could be a sign of underlying kidney disease. Dark Streaks or Bands: Dark streaks or bands on your nails could cause concern. It’s essential to have them checked out by a healthcare professional as they can be related to melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

One of the greatest challenges for human wellbeing in the 21st century will be to focus on the advantage of having a healthy colon and therefore a good immune system – this is where probiotics can play a significant role. Probiotics are critical for normal digestion and for defence against infection. Bacteria in the gut are known to: • Stimulate the immune system • Enhance the mucosal barrier • Aid digestion and break down toxins • Inhibit adherence of pathogens

A good probiotic can be beneficial in the following ailments: • Diarrhoea or constipation • Bad breath, gas and bloating • Irritable bowel and lactose intolerance • Gastroenteritis and playschool diseases in young children

NAIL HEALTH

NURTURING YOUR NAILS

A pivotal aspect of healthy nails lies in the sustenance we provide from within. Dr. Briner underscores that a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, such as biotin, zinc, and iron, can significantly influence nail health. Taking appropriate supplements can further bolster your nutritional intake, but caring for your nails extends beyond diet. Enter Jacintha Marais, Skincare Therapist and Founder of Earth Body&Skin in Claremont, Cape Town. Jacintha shares tips for those who seek to maintain robust nail health. While professional nail treatments and salon visits can certainly aid, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential drawbacks. Jacintha notes that enhancements and certain salon treatments may compromise nail health. She encourages awareness when choosing salons, advocating for cleaned and sterilised tools, and minimising exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins. Jacintha empowers patrons to ask questions and hold salons accountable for safe practices. Opt for salons using products with minimal harmful substances. If you’re inclined to enhance your nails, consider the impact on their already brittle state and opt for simpler alternatives like a manicure and polish. Furthermore, if an infection arises, a reputable technician will prioritise your health by declining treatment and urging a consultation with a doctor.

Maintain proper nail hygiene, keep nails dry and well-trimmed, and use moisturisers to prevent drying. Protect your hands with gloves during household chores and minimise prolonged exposure to water and

ith their colourful soles and laces and everexpanding product line, Veldskoen® has turned SA’s iconic shoe into a global fashion statement. The shoes, which are handcrafted in South Africa, using mostly locally sourced materials, are shipped to 32 countries and have been spotted on some famous feet, including those of Hollywood actors like Matthew McConaughey. As the Veldskoen® brand continues to grow and share South African culture with the world, three visionary women are leading the charge. We caught up with newly appointed CEO Driekie Zondagh, CMO Anna Greenfield and Freya Bell, who manages PR and events.

WHAT HAS MADE THIS BRAND TAKE OFF THE WAY IT HAS, BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY?

Freya: “Authenticity! Veldskoen is more than a brand, it’s a lifestyle and one that embodies South Africa’s spirit and adventure. People love our story when they hear it.”

WHAT’S IT LIKE SEEING CELEBS WEARING YOUR SHOES?

Driekie: “I cannot describe the immense pride we feel when we have

international celebs wearing our shoes but can honestly tell you that I still get the same excitement when I go to the local mall around the corner from my house and see strangers wearing our shoes as well.”

WORKING FOR A SMALL BUSINESS, HOW DO YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR HEALTH AND AVOID BURNOUT?

Anna: “We all burn the midnight oil from time to time, but we try to prioritise family time and flexibility, and sometimes we gently nudge people to take leave.”

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE VELDSKOEN BRAND? Anna: “Veldskoen is a vehicle for spreading positivity about South Africa. The brand identity is to celebrate what is beautiful and good about our country and her people.”

Driekie: “It is critical to have a balance between work and still making time for yourself. It is not always easy, but I make a point of blocking out some time in my calendar to ensure I have some time for myself in between meetings.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOU’RE MAKING TIME FOR YOUR KIDS?

Anna: “Part of why I love working for Veldskoen is the fact that it is a family business. Yes, family run, but also family-friendly. I have the flexibility to do school drop-off and pick-up and take my kids to sports. I can stay home with them if they are sick. We are not bound by a clock-watching mentality. We realise people are whole beings who can manage their time and their workload effectively.” Driekie: “One of the things I feel very strongly about is taking my son (Ferdi, 14), to school every day. I find the time we spend together in the mornings is special and something I don’t easily give up. I also attend every sports match and/or school event as these are the moments you can never get back once missed. My daughter (Cleo, 22), works at Veldskoen as our Digital Marketing Manager – I am blessed to see her and work with her every day.” Freya: “We sit at the dinner table together every night, without fail. This is massively important to us as it gives us a chance to connect as a family and talk about our day. As a mum of three boys, Charlie (6), Raife (2) and Jasper (9 months), I’m a taxi service, a goalkeeper, a personal dresser, a teeth brusher and a living climbing frame. It feels like I’m constantly tired, but I repeat my mother’s mantra: ‘It won’t always be like this’ which gives me bittersweet comfort knowing it won’t be this tough but that they won’t always need me when they’re older.”

Symptoms, Causes, and Coping Strategies BY ANJE HILL

D

ue to the demands of parenting and the expenses associated with childcare, numerous couples choose to have one individual stay at home to manage childcare, household duties, and daily tasks. While fathers also assume the role of a stay-at-home parent, it is predominantly mothers who fill this position. Being a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) is a fulfilling and rewarding role, but it can also be challenging and overwhelming at times. Experiencing occasional moments of low mood is a common occurrence for stay-at-home moms; however, if you consistently find yourself overwhelmed by despondency or a sense of purposelessness, and if you believe that nothing holds meaning, you might be dealing with the challenges of stay-at-home mom depression.

SYMPTOMS OF STAY-AT-HOME MOM DEPRESSION

Stay-at-home mom depression, also known as maternal or postpartum

48

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

depression, can manifest in various ways. Common symptoms include: • Persistent sadness or a sense of hopelessness. • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities. • Fatigue and low energy levels. • Changes in appetite and weight. • Difficulty sleeping or excessive sleeping. • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt. • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions. • Irritability or restlessness. • Withdrawal from social activities and relationships. • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide (seek immediate help if this occurs). If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above for an extended period, it is essential to seek help. It can be challenging to differentiate between typical parenting stress and depression, so consulting a healthcare professional is crucial. Reach out to your doctor, a therapist, or a psychiatrist who specialises in postpartum mental health.

EXPLORING TREATMENT OPTIONS

Stay-at-home mom depression is treatable, and there are many effective options available: Therapy. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy can help identify and manage negative thought patterns and enhance interpersonal relationships. Medication. In some instances, healthcare professionals may recommend anti-depressants to help alleviate symptoms. It’s essential to have an open discussion with your doctor about potential risks and benefits. Support groups. Joining a support group for stay-at-home moms can foster a sense of community and emotional support. Sharing experiences with others who understand your situation can be comforting. Self-care. Prioritise self-care by carving out time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s exercise, hobbies, or a moment to indulge in a good book.

MENTAL HEALTH

MANAGING LIFE AS A STAY-AT-HOME MOM

Balancing your role as a stay-at-home mom with self-care is crucial for your well-being. Here are some strategies to help you manage your life effectively: • Establish a daily routine which can provide structure and stability for both you and your child. • Delegate and seek help. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from your partner, family, or friends. Sharing responsibilities will help with you feel less overwhelmed. • Prioritise self-care. Make time for activities you enjoy, even if it means taking a break from childcare. • Maintain social connections by reaching out to friends, joining parenting groups, or participating in local community events. • Accept your feelings. Remember that it’s okay to have bad days. Acknowledge your emotions and seek support when needed. Stay-at-home mom depression is a real and challenging issue that affects many mothers. By recognising the symptoms, understanding the causes, seeking help when necessary, and practising self-care, you can manage this condition and enjoy your role as a stay-athome mom while maintaining your mental health. Remember that you are not alone, and support is available to help you through this journey. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has over 160 free Support Groups and 24-hour emergency helplines. Visit www.sadag.org to join a Support Group.

Causes of Stay-at-Home Mom Depression

Stay-at-home mom depression can be influenced by various factors. Hormonal changes, particularly after childbirth, can impact mood regulation, potentially contributing to depressive symptoms. Additionally, the lack of social interaction while caring for a child can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Sleep deprivation, a common aspect of early motherhood due to frequent nighttime feedings and disrupted sleep patterns, can take a toll on mental health. The adjustment from a career to the role of a stay-at-home mom can also be emotionally challenging. Furthermore, relationship strain, stemming from marital conflict, changes in the division of responsibilities, or a lack of support from a partner, can further exacerbate depressive feelings in this role.

TECHNOLOGY & KIDS

THE TECH DILEMMA

Navigating your children’s digital lives Exploring the Impact of Technology on Children’s Health and Development with Digital Well-being Expert Dr. Marlena Kruger.

I

n a world where technology seamlessly integrates into every corner of our lives, children’s interaction with devices is a subject of growing concern and fascination. With laptops, tablets, and smartphones becoming daily companions, the balance between technology’s potential benefits and risks is a delicate one. As the digital landscape evolves at an unprecedented pace, understanding its impact on children’s health and development takes centre stage. We seek guidance from Dr. Marlena Kruger, an authority in digital well-being, as we navigate the intricate world of technology’s impact on children. As CEO of MindUnique Education and director of the TechnoLife Wise Foundation, her expertise helps us unravel the evolving effects of technology on young minds. Dr. Kruger’s insights shed light on the advantages and challenges of children’s interaction with digital

BY CELESTE STRYDOM

devices, providing a nuanced perspective that aligns with our quest to comprehend technology’s role in their lives

POSITIVE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY

A positive perspective emerges while exploring the dynamics of children’s engagement with technology. Dr. Kruger says: “When used thoughtfully, technology can boost children’s self-confidence and facilitate their learning. “She explains that digital devices, used under the guidance of attentive parents and skilled educators, become pathways to improved self-confidence and enhanced learning experiences. In situations where real-world opportunities are limited, technology offers access to a virtual universe of information and interactive learning. As our society evolves in a digital age, these positive aspects form a foundation that balances technological competence with holistic growth in young minds.

PITFALLS

Of course, we should be concerned about the drawbacks. Dr. Kruger underscores the risk of a sedentary lifestyle driven by excessive screen time, which can hinder crucial physical activity needed for optimal neural network development. These concerns encompass the emergence of neural and learning disorders, compromised eyesight, and preventable health issues like obesity and diabetes. Dr. Kruger shares: “Research has underscored the impact of screen overuse on children’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.” In response, due to these concerns, various countries, including France, Finland, the Netherlands, and Australia, have taken steps to limit smartphone usage in schools. The Global Education Monitoring Report has also called for a cautious approach to classroom technology, focusing on learning outcomes over mere screen exposure. Furthermore, the potential for

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

TECHNOLOGY & KIDS

technology to distract and create addictive behaviours cannot be ignored. Dr Kruger’s insights extend to initiatives like the Wait Until Grade 8 challenge from the TechnoLife Wise Foundation. This initiative advocates postponing internet and social media access via smartphones until the age of 13, in line with age restrictions on social media platforms. This strategy safeguards children’s cognitive and emotional development.

BALANCING THE SCALES

Dr Kruger encourages a balanced approach: “We must explore alternatives to screen time, prioritize green development moments, and actively nurture essential skills beyond screens.” As our comprehension of technology’s effects evolves, it becomes evident that a thoughtful, well-balanced integration is paramount to fostering robust, resilient children in an era defined by digital influence.

Dr. Kruger’s approach highlights the importance of prevention over cure, advocating for early limitations on screen time to foster a healthy tech culture. Her guidance encourages parents to model effective screen time management and to engage with their children eye-to-eye, nurturing open communication. By striking a balance between technology and real-life experiences, families can create a nurturing environment where children

FOOD ART ACTIVITIES

FLOUR-BASED PLAY DOUGH WITH CITRUS AROMA We’ve tested this recipe and it is super easy – the dough is smooth, non-toxic, and lovely for little hands. It does not stain and lasts ±3 months. If you’re able to add a drop or two of citrus essential oil, playtime would be a truly multi-sensual experience. INGREDIENTS 1 cup flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1/3 cup salt (this helps to keep it from being sticky and also helps preserve it) 1 cup water 1 tablespoon cooking oil Food colouring of choice A few drops of citrus essential oil (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a medium saucepan, mix the flour, cream of tartar and salt. Then add water and oil.

3. Knead for a few seconds and store in a zip-lock bag or airtight container in the fridge. If it dries out a bit, add a few drops of water and knead again.

2. Turn the plate to medium/low and stir. It will be a little lumpy at first. Before it starts to get thick (be ready – this happens quickly), add whatever food colouring you want. Keep stirring until it thickens (anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes) and keep scraping it away from the bottom of the pot. Once you notice the dough is no longer wet, remove it from the pot and allow it to cool.

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE

trend Berberine is the latest supplement to take TikTok by storm, with people making it sound like a wonder supplement for weight loss, lowering blood sugar levels and everything in between. Naturally, we had to find out more. BY WANITA NICOL

i

f you’ve never heard of Berberine, you’re probably not on TikTok. The supplement has been having a major moment, with several creators posting weekly updates on their berberine journeys and calling it “Nature’s Ozempic” (yes, as in the diabetes medication turned celebrity weight-loss fad). Amidst all the hype, though, are other videos of people claiming that taking berberine made them ill; so, what should we believe?

WHAT IS BERBERINE?

“Berberine is a plant alkaloid that is found in the roots, rhizomes and stem bark of certain plants,” explains

homeopath and iridologist Dr Jessica Leske. These include European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, phellodendron and tree turmeric. Having a rich yellow-golden colour, berberine has been used as a dye, as well as medicinally and in ancient China it was highly prized. While it may be new to TikTok, berberine has been around in the natural medicine world for some time. “Berberine has been used for over 3,000 years in Chinese traditional medicine, and for over 20 years in the Western world in the form of a herbal extract or dietary supplement,” says Maria De Ascencao, a good health and wellness expert.

NOT JUST A HASHTAG

As is so often the case when it comes to trending remedies, there are many claims around the uses of berberine, with the most popular among TikTokers being its benefits for weight loss and lowering of blood sugar. “Yes, it’s recently trended on TikTok and you may have heard of it being referred to as ‘Nature’s Ozempic’. This reference is a nod to the diabetes drug that has taken the world by storm, primarily because of its notorious weight-loss side effects,” says De Ascencao. “As a supplement, the buzz around berberine primarily relates to its utility as a natural aid for people with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high

IT HAS MANY PROPERTIES – IT IS AN ANTIOXIDANT, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, ALTERS THE GUT MICROBIOME AND THEREFORE HELPS TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL, BALANCES BLOOD SUGAR, REDUCES INSULIN,” SAYS DR LESKE.

blood pressure. There is research that indicates it might even strengthen the heartbeat, potentially helping people with certain heart conditions.” While the science can sometimes be sketchy when the internet claims to have found its latest “miracle remedy”, berberine has actually been studied quite extensively. “There is a growing body of research over the last 20 years showing that berberine is indeed ripe with possibility,” says De Ascencao. “Researchers are exploring many possible uses of berberine, including as a treatment for diabetes, obesity, cancer, PCOS, high cholesterol and more.” Dr. Leske agrees. “As far as I know it is quite well studied. Recently there have been more studies coming out on Berberine.” In some animal studies, it was shown to help regulate metabolism and energy levels. Other studies found that berberine helps lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol and that it may help with weight loss and lowering the risk of heart disease. It has also been found to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. “It has many properties – it is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, alters the gut microbiome and therefore helps to lower cholesterol, balances blood sugar, reduces insulin,” says Dr Leske.

MIXED MESSAGES

There are plenty of so-called experts on TikTok posting about how to take berberine and in what dosage – and their advice varies considerably. “Berberine usually comes in capsule form and the dosage is 200-300mg taken two to three times a day,” says Dr Leske. Natroceutics recommends taking the berberine complex just before meals as it takes about an hour for it to be absorbed by the body; however, with any medication or supplement, it’s a good idea to speak to your health provider before taking it for the first time. This is especially true if you

64

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

already take chronic medication (more on that below) but even if you don’t, your dosage may be different from someone else’s depending on your personal needs and health profile.

IS IT SAFE?

While berberine is mostly safe for adults, you may experience some side effects, especially in the beginning. “It is generally safe, but may cause stomach upset initially – diarrhoea, bloating, or constipation,” says Dr Leske. It’s these symptoms that TikTokers are usually referring to when they talk about berberine making them ill. Some research suggests this initial gastrointestinal discomfort may be because berberine supports the gut microbiome and the effects occur as the gut flora balance corrects. They shouldn’t last; however, if you experience any kind of discomfort, it’s better to be safe than sorry – ask your health provider about it right away. Don’t just push through, hoping for the best. Berberine is also not for everyone. Dr Leske cautions that pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take berberine. De Ascencao adds that it’s also not recommended for babies and children and that it may interact with certain medications. “Do not take it with cyclosporine,” she says. “And if you have a medical condition or are taking any medications, speak to a healthcare professional before taking berberine. This is especially important if you are currently taking blood sugar-lowering medication. Overall, berberine has an outstanding safety profile.” There is no such thing as a “miracle remedy”. While berberine has been found to have many useful properties and people have had positive results using it, it’s always a good idea to approach any new supplement or medication with caution. Seek medical advice before trying it, and whatever you do, don’t take yourself off any prescribed chronic medication without consulting your health provider.

hen your nose gets stuffy, your head feels heavy, and the world around you seems to have lost its lustre, it’s all too easy to chalk it up to either sinusitis or allergies. Often, their symptoms can overlap, leaving many people confused about the underlying cause of their discomfort. We will explore the key differences between sinusitis and allergies, delve into natural ways to find relief, and discuss when it’s crucial to seek the guidance of a healthcare professional.

mucus membranes that can get blocked by allergens, viruses, or bacteria. Sinusitis is often the result of a viral infection, like the common cold, which can lead to a secondary bacterial infection.

Understanding Sinusitis

Allergies: The Culprit Behind Sneezing and Itching

Sinusitis, commonly known as a sinus infection, occurs when the sinuses become inflamed and swollen. These hollow spaces in the skull are lined with

certain foods. When exposed to these triggers, the immune system releases chemicals, such as histamines, leading to allergy symptoms. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE 1. Sneezing 2. Runny or itchy nose 3. Watery eyes 4. Itchy throat or ears 5. Skin rashes or hives

Natural Remedies for Relief

Now that we’ve identified the culprits, let’s explore some natural remedies to help alleviate your suffering. 1. Steam Inhalation Both sinusitis and allergies can lead to congestion and a stuffy nose. Steam inhalation can provide quick relief. Boil

water, pour it into a bowl, and lean over it while placing a towel over your head to trap the steam. Inhaling the warm, moist air can help ease congestion and soothe irritated nasal passages. 2. Saline Nasal Rinse A saline nasal rinse is a fantastic way to clear out mucus and allergens from your nasal passages. You can easily make a saline solution at home with salt and warm water or purchase a premade saline rinse kit like the Kuraflo Nasal Rinse, www.kuraflo.co.za 3. Honey and Ginger Honey is known for its antiinflammatory properties, while ginger can provide relief from congestion and throat irritation. Mix honey and ginger in a cup of warm water or tea for a soothing and healing drink. If your symptoms are caused by seasonal allergies, consuming local honey may help. The theory is that the small amounts of local pollen found in honey can help your body build a tolerance to these allergens over time. 4. Essential Oils Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils can help open your airways and provide relief from congestion. Add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam or use them in a diffuser. Visit www.soil.co.za to purchase your pure, natural and organic essential oils. 5. Stay Hydrated Hydration is key in both cases. Drink plenty of water to keep your mucus thin and easy to expel. 6. Probiotics Consuming probiotics through foods like yogurt or supplements can help boost your immune system, potentially reducing

allergy symptoms. Try Rawbiotics GUT Correct www.rawbiotics.co.za to boost your immune system.

When to See a Doctor

While natural remedies can provide relief, there are times when professional medical assistance is necessary. Persistent or Severe Symptoms If your symptoms are severe, don’t improve with natural remedies, or persist for more than a week, it’s time to see a healthcare provider. High Fever or Greenish Nasal Discharge These can be signs of a bacterial sinus infection, which may require antibiotics. Difficulty Breathing If you have severe difficulty breathing, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Allergic Reactions Consult a doctor immediately if you suspect an allergic reaction to something you’ve consumed or been exposed to, as allergies can sometimes be life-threatening. Chronic Sinusitis When experiencing recurring sinusitis, your doctor may recommend further evaluation and potentially allergy testing to determine the underlying cause. Understanding the differences between sinusitis and allergies can help you choose the right approach to relieve your symptoms. Natural remedies can provide relief for many people, but it’s vital to know when to seek medical help. By paying attention to the duration and severity of your symptoms and being aware of potential red flags, you can take charge of your health and make informed decisions when it comes to managing sinusitis or allergies.

BRAIN HEALTH

NOURISHING YOUR AGING

How Diet and Supplementation Can Keep You Sharp Every journey through life comes with its own set of changes and challenges, and ageing is no exception. One of the most common concerns associated with growing older is the fear of cognitive decline. While it’s true that our brains change with age, the good news is that cognitive impairment is not an inevitable part of the ageing process. There are proactive steps you can take to maintain and even enhance your brain function, and a significant part of that equation is your diet and supplementation. Nabila Mayet-Cassim explores ways to support your cognitive health through nutrition and supplementation.

BRAIN HEALTH

FUEL YOUR BRAIN WITH A NUTRIENTRICH DIET

A well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of brain health. As we age, our brain’s nutritional needs may change, and it’s important to adapt our diets accordingly. Dr Elenia Kolokotronis, Clinical Nutritionist provides her expert dietary tips to keep your brains sharp. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These essential fats found in fatty fish like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds are known to support brain health. Omega-3s have been linked to improved cognitive function and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Fruits and vegetables such as berries, spinach, and kale are packed with antioxidants. These compounds help protect our brain cells from damage caused by free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Whole Grains: Opt for whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread over refined grains. Whole grains provide a steady supply of glucose to the brain, which is its primary source of energy. Lean Proteins: Incorporate lean proteins like poultry, lean cuts of meat, and beans into your diet. These foods contain amino acids that are essential for neurotransmitter production, supporting cognitive function. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can impair cognitive function, so make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.

BRAIN-BOOSTING SUPPLEMENTS

In addition to a nutritious diet, certain supplements have been associated with improved cognitive function and brain health. Always consult with a healthcare professional before adding supplements to your regimen. Here are some supplements to consider: Omega-3 Fish Oil: If you’re not getting enough omega-3s from your diet, consider

a high-quality fish oil supplement. These supplements can support brain health and reduce inflammation. Vitamin D: Many older adults are deficient in vitamin D, which has been linked to cognitive decline. A vitamin D supplement may be beneficial, but actual sun exposure is best practice for optimal cognitive function.

Vitamin B: B vitamins, including B6, B12, and folate, play a crucial role in brain function. They help reduce homocysteine levels, which have been associated with cognitive impairment. Consider a B-complex supplement. Ginkgo Biloba: This herbal supplement has been used for centuries to support memory and cognitive function. It may improve blood flow to the brain and protect against age-related cognitive decline.

74

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

Phosphatidylserine: Some studies suggest that this compound can support memory and cognitive function, particularly in individuals with age-related cognitive decline.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Dr Kolokotronis advises that while diet and supplementation are important, they should be part of a holistic

approach to brain health. Other lifestyle factors can significantly impact your cognitive function: Regular Exercise: Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, stimulates the release of neuroprotective chemicals, and can improve memory and cognitive function. Mental Stimulation: Keep your mind active with activities like puzzles,

reading, learning a new language, or taking up a new hobby. These activities help create new neural pathways and maintain cognitive function. Social Connections: Engaging in social activities and maintaining strong social connections can protect against cognitive decline. Social interaction stimulate the brain and provides emotional support. While ageing brings inevitable changes to our bodies, cognitive decline is not an inevitability. By focusing on a brain-healthy diet, appropriate supplementation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we can take proactive steps to support our cognitive function as we age. Remember that individual needs may vary, so it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to create a personalised plan for maintaining and improving your brain health. Dr Kolokotronis urges quarterly check-ups as a standard practice for those over 60. With the right approach, you can continue to enjoy a sharp and active mind well into your golden years.

Dr Kolokotronis carried out a comprehensive study involving 82 participants from diverse backgrounds in South Africa and various global regions, all aged 65 or older. We examined prevalent psychological issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The study revealed a striking trend: many of these individuals had harboured romanticised expectations about retirement that did not align with the actual experience. Interestingly, the consensus among participants was that continued work played a significant role in alleviating their mental health challenges and reducing stress levels.

October marks both National Nutrition Week and National Marine Week and the international not-forprofit organisation, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) representing the world’s leading sustainable fisheries and ecolabelling program, encourages South Africans to choose seafood that’s good for you and the ocean too.

FISH IS GOOD FOR YOU

Seafood is a high-protein option that provides good nutrients, vitamins, and essential Omega-3 fatty acids which are beneficial for your heart, brain and overall health. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, a good rule of thumb is to eto eat fish such as to eat fish such as mackerel, hake, tuna and salmon at least twice a week as part of a healthy, balanced diet. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Heart Mark logo – often seen next to the MSC blue fish label on your favourite seafood products – guides consumers in making the healthier choice.

“Hake is a good source of high-quality lean protein, which is essential for muscle growth, repair, and overall body function and is often more budget-friendly,” shared Kirby Hendricks, a registered dietitian based in Cape Town.

the world’s biodiversity. Looking after the oceans and the resources they provide is more important now than ever before. Effective fisheries management is vital to ocean conservation. Take the local hake fishery as an example. In 2004, the fishery became the first hake fishery in the world to meet the globally recognised standard for sustainable fishing set by the MSC. Since its first certification, the fishery has seen several environmental benefits, including the rebuilding of hake stocks, reductions in seabird interactions, and greater understanding and migration of its impact on ocean ecosystems and the seabed. The fishery also employs 27,000 South Africans in direct and indirect jobs. The MSC’s blue fish label on wild-caught seafood indicates that the product has been independently verified for its sustainability. By choosing fish and seafood carrying this label, you make the positive choice to support well-

managed, sustainable fisheries that help keep our oceans healthy – so future generations can enjoy the same seafood we love.

Asian Hake Medallions Salad Recipe by Chef Naledi Toona Prep time: 15 min Cooking time: 15 min Serves 2

INGREDIENTS MSC-certified hake medallions, each medallion cut into four pieces 3 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp chilli flakes

Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Serves 4

1 tbsp crushed garlic and ginger 3 tbsp honey For the salad 200g fresh herb salad mix 1 cup red cabbage, shredded 1 large carrot, grated

METHOD Mix all the ingredients together except the medallions. Place the medallions in a zip-lock bag and pour in the sauce. Leave to marinade for one hour in the fridge. Remove the medallions from the fridge and leave at room temp for 15 minutes. Heat a nonstick pan. Remove the medallions from the marinade and grill on a pan for 2 minutes on each side. Set aside. In the meantime, pour the rest of the marinade into a small saucepan. Simmer the sauce until it is slightly reduced. Set aside to cool completely. On a large platter, place a layer of the herb salad mix. Scatter the red cabbage and carrot on top. Carefully place the medallions on top of the salad mix. Drizzle the sauce on top as a dressing.

Herbed hake & spring vegetable spaghetti Recipe By Ilse van der Merwe - The Food Fox INGREDIENTS 30 ml extra virgin olive oil 450 g frozen MSC-certified hake medallions, sliced into 1 cm rounds Salt pepper, to taste 2-3 garlic cloves, finely grated Rind of 1 lemon, finely grated 5 ml (1 teaspoon) cake or bread flour 250 ml (1 cup) vegetable or chicken stock 400g spaghetti 125 g sugar snap peas, sliced 1/2 cup Italian parsley, finely chopped 1/2 cup dill, finely chopped 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, finely grated

METHOD Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil for the spaghetti. While waiting for it to boil, heat the oil using a large wide non-stick pan and fry the sliced hake on both sides until lightly golden and just cooked, seasoning with salt pepper. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the spaghetti to the boiling water (stir every now and then to prevent sticking, and place a timer on 7-8 minutes for al dente). While the spaghetti is cooking, add the garlic and lemon rind to the same pan in which you fried the hake, over medium heat. Stir for half a minute, then add the flour and stir briefly. Add the stock and bring to a simmer, stirring. Now add the sugar snaps, fried hake, and the freshly cooked spaghetti, topping with parsley, dill and parmesan. Use tongs to mix well, then plate and serve immediately in bowls.

Greek Hake with Feta, Lemon & Fennel Recipe by Georgia East INGREDIENTS 450g frozen MSC-certified hake medallions 1 fennel bulb, washed 2 lemons 2-3 rounds of feta cheese, drained 8-10 black olives, pitted 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary 5ml dried oregano 5ml smoked paprika Coarse ground sea salt and black pepper Olive oil 250ml orzo (Greek rice pasta)

82

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C. Remove each hake medallion from its packaging and set aside. Chop off the fennel stalks, reserving the leaves. Using a very sharp knife or mandolin, thinly slice the fennel bulb. Do the same with half a lemon. Drizzle a little olive oil in the base of an ovenproof dish and layer over the fennel and lemon slices. Add the feta rounds and arrange the hake on top, scattering over the olives. Juice the remaining lemon half and add to the dish. Season the hake with the dried oregano and paprika and tuck the fresh rosemary sprigs in amongst the fish. Season the entire dish with salt and pepper and drizzle over some more olive oil.

Bake the fish for 20-25 mins or until gently flaking. Cook the orzo according to packet instructions and pour into a large bowl. Remove the hake from the dish and keep warm. Using tongs, transfer the cooked fennel, feta and olives from the ovenproof dish to the orzo and combine. The feta will break apart, making the orzo creamy. Finely chop the reserved fennel leaves and add to the mixture. Avoid adding any of the sliced lemon as this will result in bitter orzo. Spoon the orzo on to each plate and top with a hake medallion. Serve with extra lemon wedges and a dollop of tzatziki if desired.

INGREDIENTS 1 cucumber

Total time: 15 minutes Serves 2

METHOD Speed-peel the cucumber lengthways into long ribbons, discarding the seedy core, and place in a bowl with a pinch of sea salt, black pepper, and 1 tablespoon each of red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Toast the pittas, then slice into strips and arrange around the edges of two plates. Place a large non-stick frying pan on a high heat. Remove the peaches to a bowl, give the pan a quick wipe with a ball of kitchen paper, then use the fine side of a box grater to grate half the halloumi over the surface of the pan (like a lacy doily). Leave on the heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until golden on one side, then tip directly over one of the plates, using a spatula to ease it away from the pan, if needed. SEA & MOUNTAIN SKEWERS Right the way across the Mediterranean, foods from the sea and mountains collide in truly beautiful ways. Even more fascinatingly, the friendship between prawns and mushrooms here is divine.

INGREDIENTS 2 medium leeks

Total time: 45 minutes Serves 2

8 large raw shell-on king prawns 160g mixed mushrooms 40g Pata Negra or quality Spanish ham 1 x 700g jar of white beans

86

absolute mama | ISSUE 16

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Place the whole leeks straight on to the bars of the oven for 40 minutes, or until blackened. Meanwhile, remove the prawn heads, squashing the juices into a small bowl (sounds gross, but trust me!). Peel away the shells, leaving the tails on, then devein and put aside. Place the prawn shells and heads into a small non-stick pan with 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Cook for 10 minutes on medium heat, squashing and turning regularly, to create a prawn oil, then discard the shells and heads. Meanwhile, finely slice any larger mushrooms and tear the Pata Negra into small pieces (if needed), then carefully divide and thread the prawns, mushrooms and Pata Negra between 4 skewers (I sometimes like to use long

woody rosemary sprigs), not packing them too tightly together. Strip off and discard the outer leaves from the leeks, then finely chop the rest and place in a medium non-stick frying pan with the beans (juices and all) and the reserved prawn juices. Bring to a simmer, then season to perfection with sea salt and 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar, adding a splash of water to loosen, if needed. Cook the skewers in a large non-stick frying pan on medium-high heat (or on a barbecue) with a drizzle of olive oil for 5 minutes, or until golden and just cooked through, turning occasionally and lightly pressing down with a fish slice. Spoon the beans onto a warm serving platter, then place the skewers on top and drizzle with the prawn oil, to serve.

s spring awakens Babylonstoren’s 7 000-odd clivias in a flush of orange, Master Gardener Gundula Deutschländer describes how seasonal rhythms have taught her to begin her days by observing what each plant needs. “Gardening is in my blood,” says Gundula, who studied Fine Arts but turned to gardening for more grounding. She joined Babylonstoren’s gardening team on day one, back in 2007. Her respect for South Africa’s untamed wilderness was instilled by her mother – a landscaper, who at 77 continues to sculpt the soil – and her father, who hails from a line of foresters. “I love the generosity gardening offers. I can give myself entirely and be replenished,” Gundula remarks in her soft-spoken manner. “If I didn’t have a child or my gardens, I would be a floating cloud. These two forces in my life balance each other out, especially as having an only child as a single parent often means they require your attention all the time,” she adds.

MAMANESS

Parenthood, for Gundula, extends beyond merely being a biological parent to children. “We need to redefine traditional notions of parenting, of what it means to be a mother, a father or a guardian, regardless of sexual orientation or gender roles,” she says with heartfelt passion. “The concept of fatherhood is a difficult one in South Africa. Everyone should be able to identify with ‘mamaness’ or motherhood regardless of whether they’re a man or a woman. We should rather focus our energies on how to nurture life through care to create a healthier environment,” Gundula asserts in her soothing tone. “When you have children, you want to give them tools, facilitate

It reminded her of the importance of playfulness and being childlike. During her divorce, she hung from the branches of an olive tree, just as she did as a girl. “There’s no personal growth without play because we cannot evolve beyond our usual patterns,” Gundula adds, speaking of her personal experience.

Her 11-year-old son – Nur, a genderneutral name meaning ‘transcending light’ – has been diagnosed with ADD. He, too, finds refuge in the natural surroundings of their home. This, she says, is because “no matter who you are, whether you’re experiencing droughts or mud-puddle seasons, there’s always a safe space for you in nature because you’re innately part of that environment”. Gundula advises parents that “nature is the answer”, especially in the absence of a guidebook on how to navigate the modern world and ever-changing digital environment. Physicality is important for boys. When Nur feels frustrated, they move through those emotions by going into the mountain, running through fields, climbing trees and stick fighting. This gives rise to a poignant reflection on what she was like as a girl: “I always said yes, obeyed what I was told and tried my best. These days, I try to be like a rose that has both flowers and thorns. This helps me find that balance between blooming and protecting myself”. This is exceptionally

perceptive advice for raising confident girls – I think to myself – so that they learn how to draw boundaries, rather than succumbing to society’s expectations of always being a ‘good girl’.

THE (NOT-SO) SECRET GARDEN

Just as parents’ roles evolve with their growing children, so Gundula’s role as Master Gardener has been redefined over the last 16 years. She’s nurturing Babylonstoren’s garden through its teenage years, “as it redefines its identity”. The garden is modelled on Company’s Gardens, as a reminder of South Africa’s history as a stop-over for travellers to replenish their food supplies and resources. Each of Babylonstoren’s 3 000 or so plant species are edible or have healing properties. During my guided garden tour, I’m encouraged to engage curiously with the working farm using my senses – to touch, smell, pick and taste the produce. As Babylonstoren comes of age, its harvests are shared among the two farm-to fork restaurants, boutique hotel and online shop. The one thing that’s remained constant during all this time is mother nature’s healing properties. A return to natural remedies is steadily germinating worldwide. Gundula planted the medicinal herbs within the

Healing Garden in a “humancentric” manner, with plants’ placement corresponding to the body parts they heal. Wilde Als (Artemisia afra) is named after Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting, wildlife, plants and childbirth. “The arrow shape of the leaf’s pattern indicates her protective properties,” says Gundula, plucking a leaf segment, indicating that I roll it between my fingers, smell and taste it. “The Xhosa roll the leaves into a ball that they place in their nostrils and ears to keep the cold out. It also helps with fever, lung conditions and supports a weakened immune system.” During her garden tour, expect Gundula to encourage you to pluck and eat three Spekboom leaves for your daily dose of Vitamin C. Nibbling on the so-called ‘elephant food’ helps nursing mothers with milk production and decreases blood sugar levels. If it grows in your garden, she recommends picking a few branches to decorate cakes, toss into salads and use instead of lemon. Gundula plants her final thought about how “Gardening, much like parenting, mirrors the cyclical rhythm of life. You have the chance to flower and shed your leaves as you grow personally and alongside your children.”

FROM THE EARTH

Gundula “baptises” her day by brewing a mean cuppa tea. “This self-empowering ritual acknowledges our role to nurture ourselves and the world,” she advises. Her daily blend is guided by her mood, her plans for the day, and the restorative properties of each herb. • Chamomile and lavender tea helps relaxation, relieves anxiety and aids sleep. • Chasteberry balances hormones in men and women and helps acne. • Echinacea eases colds. • Melissa has calming properties. • Mint aids indigestion and has antioxidant properties. (It’s best not given to infants). • Rooibos reduces cholesterol and blood pressure and is given to infants for colic. • Rosemary improves the ability to focus and memory. • Rosehip is high in vitamin C and has anti-inflammatory properties. • Sage soothes sore throats and fights infections due to its antibacterial properties. It also assists cognitive function. • St John’s wort elevates low mood. • Valerian root eases sleeplessness. • Holy Basil, Ashwagandha, Licorice root, Rhodiola and Tumeric are adaptogenic herbs that help the body respond to stress, while normalising physiological functions.

Growing YOUR OWN FOOD

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in self-sufficiency and sustainable living. One of the most rewarding and practical ways to embrace this lifestyle is by growing your food in your garden. Our country boasts an enviable climate and soil potential for gardening, making it an excellent location for year-round food cultivation. As we witness the resurgence of the age-old practice of home vegetable gardening, driven by rising food costs and a desire to reconnect with nature, it’s the perfect time to embrace this fundamental skill. is a fantastic option. You can grow a variety of plants in pots, which can be placed on balconies, patios, or anywhere that receives sunlight. Vertical Gardening: This space-saving approach involves growing crops vertically on trellises, walls, or supports. It’s an excellent way to make the most of limited space while keeping your garden tidy.

PERFECT SOIL PREPARATION

When the objective is to cultivate a flourishing harvest, meticulous soil preparation is paramount. The type of soil in your garden greatly impacts the success of your crops. Start by testing your soil’s pH and nutrient levels. Incorporate ample organic matter, such as compost, manure, and mulch, into your high-quality topsoil by digging it in deeply (800mm) for optimal outcomes. For raised vegetable beds, a

Planting Tips

Successful gardening also hinges on knowing how and when to plant your crops. Here are some tips for planting your garden: Companion Planting: Consider planting companion plants that benefit each other, such as tomatoes and basil. This can help with pest control and encourage healthy growth. Crop Rotation: To prevent soil depletion and reduce disease and pest problems, practise crop rotation. Move your crops to different garden beds each season. Proper Spacing: Follow recommended spacing guidelines for each crop to allow adequate airflow and prevent overcrowding, which can lead to disease. Seasonal Planting: Different crops thrive in different seasons. Research the best planting times for your region to ensure optimal growth. Watering: Water consistently, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, to prevent evaporation and minimize fungal diseases. Mulch: Apply mulch around your plants to help retain moisture, control weeds, and maintain consistent soil temperature. Fertilization: Use organic fertilisers sparingly and follow recommended guidelines for each crop. Overfertilising can harm your plants and contaminate the environment. Pest and Disease Management: Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests or disease. Consider using natural methods or organic pest controls to avoid chemical use.

Growing your own food in your garden is a rewarding and sustainable

endeavour. By selecting the right location, designing your garden space thoughtfully, preparing the perfect soil, and following the steps for no-dig gardening, you’ll be well on your way to cultivating a thriving garden. Remember to use these planting tips to ensure healthy, generous harvests. Whether you’re a novice gardener or have some experience, the journey of tending to your garden and reaping the rewards of your labour is both satisfying and fulfilling. So, roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and watch your garden flourish.

The abandoned Santa Carolina Hotel on Paradise Island, formerly a symbol of opulence and seclusion, now stands as a haunting relic against the backdrop of unspoiled nature. The decaying structure tells a story of bygone days when luxury met the Indian Ocean’s tranquillity. A notable piece of history lies within its walls, as it’s rumoured that the legendary Bob Dylan found inspiration here, penning

the iconic song “Mozambique” during his stay at the Santa Carolina Hotel. Though its glory days are a memory, this derelict yet fascinating site remains a captivating reminder of the island’s past, with an added note of musical history. Pack your bags and let this coastal oasis enchant you with its beauty, culture, and adventures of a lifetime, your unforgettable journey awaits!
