We often hear and talk about the damaging effects of the sun on our skin: sun exposure can cause skin cancer, for one thing, but it can also be the cause of wrinkles and age spots. When we think of how our skin ages over time, it sags, tears, and generally becomes much more fragile. Well, what about our eyes?
NABILA MAYET-CASSIM looks at the sun’s effects on our eyes, the importance of sun protection and how crucial it is to wear proper polarized eyewear.

Similar to how it damages your skin, UV radiation (UVA and UVB) from the sun enters your body through invisible wavelengths, altering DNA which increases the risk of developing skin cancer on the eyelids and premature ageing of the delicate skin around your eyes.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation UV rays from the sun may contribute to the causes of the following:
Cataracts: The most common cause of preventable blindness, cataracts obstruct and discolour your eye’s lens and gradually impair your vision.
Macular degeneration: A leading cause of vision loss in adults over 60, it is brought on by cumulative UV damage to the retina’s central portion, which records what we see and transmits it to the brain.
Keratitis, or corneal sunburn: UV exposure can cause painful burning of the cornea, the clear surface that admits light and images to the retina. This can cause light sensitivity, blurred vision, and even temporary blindness.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR EYES AGAINST THE SUN
Your eyes help you see and navigate in your day-to-day life, so protecting them is paramount. It goes without saying that our eyes perform an integral function and are a necessary part of human life.
With beautiful, warm summer days to look forward to, you and your family can safely enjoy the great outdoors while preserving the health of your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Simply adopt a few simple habits and make them a way of life.
The most common way to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays is by wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
“Sunglasses and hats help you in two important ways. They filter light and they protect your eyes from damaging UV rays,”
explains Optometrist Rubeena Jadwat. Start thinking about sunglasses as important as sunscreen. In other words, don’t leave home without them. But how do you know what kind of sunglasses are right for you and which ones are actually going to help?
• First off, the basics. We want to wear sunglasses that fit us correctly so that they actually cover our eyes. To protect our eyes from all sides, look for wrap-around sunglasses.
• Go for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB light (this should be indicated on the sunglasses themselves or the retailer may be able to tell you).
• You might want to take it a step further by wearing specialised polarized sunglasses to better protect your eyes. To improve visual comfort and performance, these sunglasses are designed

to reduce intense, blinding glare from highly reflective surfaces like snow and water.
POLARIZED SUNGLASSES - ARE THEY CRUCIAL?
We’ve all experienced the effects of glare from wet or shiny surfaces when being outdoors. Our vision can be damaged by this glare, making our surroundings dangerous. According to Jadwat, “Polarized glasses can give you a clearer, more accurate vision and alleviate some eye strain. If you find yourself squinting a lot, even when you’re wearing sunglasses, consider investing in polarized sunglasses.”
“Polarized lenses are not crucial because they will not protect your eyes from UV damage more than standard 100% UV lenses.”
Even though most polarized glasses offer some level of protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, the phrases polarized and UV protection should not be used interchangeably. Unless specifically stated otherwise, polarized lenses do not provide UV protection.
This also does not mean that polarized glasses should be completely disregarded. There is highly specialised glasses designed to reduce strain on the eyes by eliminating harsh, blinding glares. Polarized glasses are an excellent option to consider for all who spend much time outside.
Polarized lenses are beneficial for anyone working near water, metal, or large flat surfaces that reflect sunlight. These glasses also come in handy for any activity that involves quick changes in lighting, such as fishing, jogging, or cycling.
Eye strain, eye tiredness, and headaches can be minimised through polarized lenses and are ideal for not only better sight while on the job, but also a better quality of eye health.
Making sure your eyes are adequately protected from light should be your top priority when purchasing sunglasses. Be sure to speak with your optometrist to learn more about the best type of sunglasses for you.

AISHA BAKER is known for her brand, Baked – the Blog, the Collection and, recently, the Podcast. We sat down with the woman who brings it to all life.

ashion blogger, influencer and business owner Aisha Baker arrives for coffee, looking effortlessly elegant, make-up polished and glowing, but not over-the-top. So far, so fitting. “Sorry,” she mutters, taking her seat. “I’m going to an event after this, that’s why I’m like this. I don’t usually wear make-up.” The statement feels jarringly at odds with an Instagram feed that’s all-gorgeous outfits, glamorous events, and perfectly made-up smiles. Later, there’ll be another revelation, when she shares how she went to an event with hair coiled in a bun, took it out as she arrived and “hoped for the best.” But by then, the anecdote won’t be so much a bombshell as true to character for a woman who, outside of the demands of the Gram, is down to earth and even relatable.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
“I don’t think I’m a social media influencer as much as I’m an entrepreneur,” Aisha muses. It’s true – she may have started out as a blogger but today Baked is a registered business
and she runs it accordingly, paying herself a salary, making sure it’s tax compliant and setting financial targets every year. Her business interests also go beyond content creation – Aisha has a clothing brand (Baked Collection, launched during lockdown) and has partnered with her dad on a Vida e franchise.
While she has a natural entrepreneurial spirit, she also has a degree to back it up. “I think I always secretly wanted to be in media,” she confesses, “but I was so afraid to ask my parents to approve that, so I went and studied business because that was what was expected of me.”
BLOGGING BEFORE IT WAS COOL
It was at university that she started writing – about typical student struggles, like trying to make new friends, breaking up with her high-school boyfriend and how to dress for the campus on a student budget. A friend suggested she turn those essays into a blog. “It got popular very quickly because I think so many of my peers at unis around South Africa

could relate to those stories.”
By the third year, Baked The Blog had 3 500 subscribers. Encouraged by one of her lecturers, and with help from other bloggers, Aisha started approaching brands and by the time she graduated, her hobby had turned into one of the first monetised blogs in South Africa – and a viable career.
UNEXPECTEDLY EXPECTING
Aisha and her husband (Proteas cricketer Wayne Parnell) fell pregnant with their son when Aisha was 28 – just as her career was taking off. The transition has not been easy.
Q What was it like for you, becoming a mom?
We hadn’t planned to have a child, so it was a big shock for me. I struggled with post-partum depression because I felt like none of my friends and colleagues were having kids, so I felt so alone in this experience. Knowing I’d given up this big career to be a parent was just so challenging for me.
Q How did you handle it?
I decided to quit everything and for six months I just focused on my mental health and my son and we travelled with my husband. Looking back, it was the right decision because it allowed me to immerse myself in the experience of being a mom and it gave me a new perspective and motivation to have something for myself. It took me about 18 months to recover from the post-partum depression and get back into work.
Q Did you know you had post-partum depression?
No. A friend of mine is a doctor and she came over to my house and recommended I speak to someone, because she said, this is not ok. I was in my pyjamas every single day. One week became two weeks and the next thing it was three months of me not being able to do anything, not leaving the house and just feeling like I was a shadow of myself. When I got medicated, within six weeks I was feeling so positive. I started going out and being social again.
Q What were things like with the birth of your daughter?
I had her in 2021. My husband was in the UK for cricket and because of Covid, we couldn’t travel to him, and he couldn’t come to us. So, he couldn’t make it back for her birth. I had a Facetime birth with him, and he only met her when she was six weeks old.

Going into 2023, Aisha plans to focus on her podcast (Baked The Podcast) and, in particular, conversations around motherhood. Here’s what she wants people to know…
1. YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALL. “That’s the message I want to send to people – that it’s ok to stop. It’s ok to get off the wheel and step back. I don’t want to push that narrative anymore that being a working mom and having it all together has to be the goal.”

Relationships are hard, rewarding work. Factor in a transition and loss such as separation, divorce or death of a spouse; and the subsequent rebuilding of a new family unit will mean new challenges to work through. Eager anticipation and trepidation may precede the uniting under one roof but with early preparation, consistent communication and support, these can be navigated more smoothly. We chat with experts and experienced blended families who share some tips and insights.

LOVE ISN’T ENOUGH, PUT IN THE WORK.
“My rule of thumb when you’re dating is no contact with your partner’s children for at least the first year,” suggests Mental Health Therapist and Social Worker, Kim Abrahams. “You don’t get to your partner through the kids; you get to the partner on the baseline first and the kids are the bonus. As beautiful as the love is between two people, that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen instantly for the children and people forget that. When you’re in love…you’re on the rollercoaster. But at some point, the roller coaster stops.”
A misalignment of parenting styles is also a common challenge Kim encounters as often the spouse joining an existing unit (i.e. a person marrying a partner with children) is not encouraged to use his/her voice or advocate for his/her role in the family or to discipline the children. If the groundwork is not solid, it’s a mess.
PREPARATION SHOULD BEGIN BEFORE MOVING IN TOGETHER
Don’t wait until the poo hits the fan. When first contemplating a long-term relationship, moving in together and/or

marriage, this is the best time to start family therapy and not during the move-in. Start the awkward conversations. Kim finds that most families seek help when they’re already
in crisis but pre-work should begin prior to moving in together and therapy should be continuous.
HOLD SPACE FOR THE CHILDREN TO COMMUNICATE
“When it comes to the children, I see a lot of anger and anxiety”, says Kim. “On the flip side, there’s submissive behaviour which escalates thereafter. Just because you’re moving into the children’s houseit doesn’t mean they are not grieving the life they thought they would’ve had. Kids are in pain and they don’t know how to express it. Behind anger is always pain;
times individually or together with their children to ask how they are feeling.
Transparent, vulnerable conversations where adults and children share should be encouraged. Stepchildren should be consulted about what name they feel comfortable using for the stepparent. A nurturing community should be sought. A neutral party such as a play therapist is always a good idea as children may only be able to express themselves through play and not words.

Parents should prioritise regular
change to: One family shared their idea that a blended family is a slow cooker i.e. you’ve got to add one ingredient at a time, watch it, let it simmer and know that it’s a meal you will only get to enjoy years later. Families should equip themselves with knowledge, mentors and socialise with other blended families. Each family walks its own path and comes with its own unique set of circumstances therefore it should lean into its own support system and leave what does not work for it. The family should then be re-imagined and co-created by the willing partners in their own way. Conflict will arise but there are learned tools which can over time assist with conflict.

This journey is new for everyone and family members need to understand and honour each other’s differences allowing for room for growth and for rules to be adjusted accordingly (as children grow older).
SET UP A SACRED WEEKLY FAMILY TIME
Set aside a weekly family time which encourages participation for all ages. It could be a pizza or movie night every Friday where different family members get to be in charge of food/genre selection. Seasonally this could expand to family road trips, camping or holidays.
CREATE FAMILY RULES TOGETHER WITH YOUR CHILDREN
Create family rules together that are visible in the home. Start with a few core family rules where each person gets to add one rule. A helpful script is “In this family we never… i.e. talk to each other with respect, are careful with the words we use, try to keep our voices down. Exclude the word ‘don’t’ from any of the rules.” Kim says “You’ll be surprised. Sometimes even the
3-year-old will add a rule like, “Can we have ice cream?” You can negotiate this - perhaps ice cream on movie night. Family rules can be a fun thing; involving eating and scribing and it becomes a unified tool.”
DON’T ALLOW HUMOUR TO ESCAPE YOUR HOME
Make humour a priority in your home. Some things aren’t going to be funny, but ensure you’re able to laugh at yourself, and your mistakes and tell yourself and your children it’s ok to mess up. Sometimes bursting into laughter can de-escalate a situation and result in a shocked child giving the parent time to ask ‘What was that all about?’

It’s been ten years since Kristin Weixelbaumer started Black Betty Design, a homegrown South African jewellery design business that has become known for its unusual, striking creations and perfectly imperfect aesthetic.
The granddaughter of a jewellery designer, the craft was in Kristin’s blood; but it was learning about the healing power of gemstones and crystals on a trip to India that ignited the spark that would become Black Betty. The “Betty” part encompasses all women and the complexity that makes each woman unique. The “Black” represents a woman’s inner force. Together, they’ve come to symbolise women with the
boldness to step out of line and the vision to write their own stories.
WHAT INSPIRED THE BLACK BETTY BRAND?
There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. Black Betty is inspired by the idea of owning both your light and your dark; of owning your flaws. We create jewellery that enhances your “dark side” through incredibly unique designs, raw gemstones and drawing from symbols like snakes and skulls.
For Black Betty, the skull is less a symbol of death and more one that is about life. It reminds us about the fragility of life and how we need to take

I see Black Betty as my first baby, so there is such a link between in my entrepreneurial life and my life as a mother – the two influence and inspire each other so closely.
My children (and family) influence, inspire and assist me endlessly in my career. Being a mom has shown me never to sweat the small stuff because many more important things matter in
life. The ups and downs of being a parent resemble the ups and downs of owning a business, so you have to learn to go with the flow. I’m filled with passion in all corners of my life through my career and through being a mom; both “jobs” remind me to be deeply grateful for all I have.
Lastly, I feel like a mama to my Black Betty team. So, really, in all aspects of my life, there is this beautiful element of motherhood that I so value and from which I am always learning.

The human body is full of beneficial microorganisms known as probiotics that help keep your body healthy and working well, typically these are bacteria but certain types of yeast can also function as probiotics. The gut microbiome, or the community of microorganisms that live in your gut, has the largest number of bacteria and the greatest number of species compared to any other area of the body. Your gut is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria and it is believed to house 70-80% of your immune system, which emphasises how closely the immune system and gut health are related.
Taking good care of your digestive system and having good gut health have benefits from top-to-toe. The good bacteria in your gut help your body to digest food better and build up a defence against harmful pathogens such as viruses and bad bacteria. It has been estimated that 1-in-3 people are living with digestive difficulties and
our modern life is making us more prone to these issues. Studies have shown that our ancestors had 50% more diversity in their gut biomes than the average person today and it is believed that Western diets and modern-day hygiene have wiped a few dozen species of helpful microorganisms right out of our digestive tracts. These good bacteria play a vital role in keeping us mentally and physically healthy and also reduce the risk of illness and disease. Symptoms of a poorly functioning gut can include uncomfortable digestion, stomach aches, poor nutrient absorption, poor immunity and sleep, mood fluctuations and general fatigue. One thing that is clear across all studies is that if your diet is not healthy then chances are, your gut won’t be either and experts agree that lifestyle changes can make a significant difference.

Fibre is Crucial
Fibre is an essential component in achieving good gut health. Your child’s diet should contain a variety of fibres as they help the gut in their own unique ways.While we often think of fibre as a singular nutrient there are many different types, for example:
• Resistant starch found in wholegrain cereals, legumes and starchy vegetables like potatoes is not digested as normal by the body. It travels to the large intestine where it feeds good bacteria in the gut and aids in protection against disease.
• Soluble fibre helps the emptying process in the stomach, which aids children to feel fuller for longer. This fibre is found in legumes, oats, barley, vegetables and fruits.
• Insoluble fibre is found in wholegrain bread and cereals and in the skin of fruit and vegetables – this fibre helps to soften bowel content which promotes regular and comfortable bowel movements.

THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
The most common factors that contribute to poor gut health are stress, poor nutrition and long-term use of antibiotics and antacids. Antibiotics play a huge role in our gut health because they kill all bacteria in the gut, both the bad and the good, and sometimes species don’t come back.
This is especially true with children who are still in the process of developing their gut microbiome. It is believed that before the age of four or five a child’s microbiome remains flexible making this the perfect time to build a strong and healthy gut. Beyond this age, the microbiome is harder to change as it becomes well-established.
A healthy diet is vital in creating a positive environment for good bacteria and there are many great options available to us as South Africans in our local cuisines that are rich in probiotics. Mpho Tshukudu, a registered dietician with a special interest in South Africa’s food culture and heritage, explains, “Traditional foods often carry negative connotations of being ‘poverty foods’, despite their valuable nutrient credentials. The ‘sour’ taste associated with fermented dairy foods such as ‘maas’ and yoghurt is a South African
taste preference that works to our benefit.”
Tshukudu also encourages the intake of vegetables, particularly traditional leaves, of which South Africa has over 60 varieties.Morogo leaves, for example, are rich in nutrients and fibre; fruits such as pomegranates, figs, blackberries and baobab offer a source of polyphenols to support gut health and all of these can be used in modernised recipes, like making pesto, salads and smoothies. “One of the things I do today with my clients is to encourage the inclusion of a wide variety of colours we find in our foods that are beneficial to our health,” she says.

Pain is more complicated than you probably realise. The good news: That means there are more ways to treat it.

According to research published in the journal Pain earlier this year, more than a quarter of the world’s population is suffering from chronic pain. That’s more than two billion people, struggling through life; however, the solution is not as simple as popping a pill.
WHAT IS PAIN ANYWAY?
You’d think that something as primal and ubiquitous as pain would have a straightforward, simple explanation. That is not the case. In fact, the current definition of pain was only published by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in 2020. It defines pain as, “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage”. It
then goes on to explain that how we perceive pain is entirely personal, and influenced by biological, psychological and social factors. And that “through their life experiences, individuals learn the concept of pain”.
There are also different types of pain. “Acute pain is pain that’s been present for a few days to about six weeks; when the pain’s been present from six weeks to about four months, it’s in the sub-acute category and anything longer than three to four months it becomes chronic,” explains Dr Nadah Karriem, who works at The Pain Collective, a facility that specialises in the treatment of chronic pain.
Acute and sub-acute pain is generally linked to an obvious tissue injury. “With chronic pain, most times the tissue injury has already improved, but the pain signalling pathway is still signalling pain even without a tissue
injury.” Functioning correctly, pain is the body’s warning system that there’s a threat to its wellbeing. When pain becomes chronic, the warning system is malfunctioning – like a house alarm that keeps going off when no one is trying to break in.
STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE
Felicia Rubin, pharmacist and integrative health practitioner, practices functional medicine and believes in homing in on the underlying cause. “I do not treat symptoms – I treat the cause,” she says. “Because if you just treat with painkillers, you might be masking the diagnosis. You need to understand what sort of pain you’re treating.”
Rubin typically looks at three things when she works with patients –inflammation, diet and lifestyle. “Pain is caused by inflammation,” she says.

So by treating the inflammation, you eliminate the symptom, which is the pain. She says following a healthy diet can go a long way towards fighting inflammation. While that will look different for everyone, she finds many people respond well to eliminating sugar, heavily processed foods, gluten and sometimes dairy.
“Lifestyle is important because sometimes pain is triggered by stress,” says Rubin. While pain may leave you tempted to curl up in bed all day, she says that’s the worst thing you can do. Instead, she recommends practising mindfulness, yoga,Pilates or going for walks in nature.
TIERS OF TREATMENT
Dr Karriem’s first step is also to treat the underlying cause. “With acute pain, you treat the underlying issue –whether it’s a cut on your hand or an infection – and once the tissue has healed, the pain will subside.”
With chronic pain, things become more complex. Dr Karriem and her colleagues work as part of an interdisciplinary team and adopt a biopsychosocial approach to treating chronic pain. “You look at the person as a whole – what are the chronic conditions influencing the pain? You

Again, lifestyle plays an important role. An occupational therapist will consult on factors such as stress management, sleep hygiene and ergonomics. There is also a dietician on the team, who helps patients follow an anti-inflammatory, Mediterranean-style diet. “There’s been a lot of research recently about the effect of the foods that we eat and how they can increase inflammation in the body,” says Dr Karriem. Again, movement is encouraged – in the form of yoga, Pilates and daily walks.
If these interventions don’t work, a patient may be a candidate for the next tier of treatment – a pain-blocking procedure. “We do pulsed radio frequency rhizotomies – using electrical stimulation to block the pain-signalling pathways in the body.” Essentially, it involves stimulating the nerves with electricity that send pain signals from the tissue to the brain, confusing them and disrupting the signals, she explains. This reduces the intensity of the pain, allowing the patient to function. It takes around six to ten weeks to take effect and typically lasts 12-18 months. It can be repeated.
In addition, they also do pharmacological blocks – using medication to block the pain pathways. Here the effect is immediate, but it wears off after about a week.
There’s no surgery involved in these procedures, but there are needles, so they’re usually performed under sedation in a day theatre facility. “With these procedures, we’re not treating the underlying problem, we’re treating pain,” says Dr Karriem.
The important thing to remember is that pain is complex and if one treatment hasn’t worked for you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of options.

It’s safe to say that on a daily basis, we don’t think much about blood circulation. Generally, we understand the importance of healthy blood circulation, including how it supports the brain, heart, lungs, muscles, and digestion by carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.
Good blood circulation is an essential bodily function. When blood flows freely through the body and fulfills its task of eliminating waste products and deoxygenated blood from the cells, it is said to have good circulation. A healthy heart and a strong circulatory system work together to ensure proper circulation.
Even though poor circulation can affect any region of the body, it is sometimes first felt in the legs and feet since they are the areas that are furthest from the heart and have the most gravitational impact on the circulatory system.
While the symptoms of poor circulation might vary, any level of poor
circulation can affect a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and activities.
Midwife, Safiyya Sayed informs us of the common symptoms to look out for which may indicate poor blood circulation, they are:
• Tingling sensations
• Numbness
• Throbbing or stinging pain in your limbs
• Body pain
• Muscle cramps
• Bulging veins
• Pale or blue skin
These are signs that the blood isn’t moving correctly throughout your body. Your organs might not be getting the nutrients they need.
CAUSES OF POOR CIRCULATION
According to vitalheartandvein.com, poor blood circulation can lead to many problems. If left untreated, it could potentially affect the heart, kidneys, and brain, and may even be fatal.
Rather than being a condition on its own, poor circulation is a symptom of several illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, vascular problems, and heart disorders. Treatment of the underlying reasons, not simply the symptoms, is crucial if you have signs and symptoms of poor circulation.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE

atherosclerosis. It is a result of the thickening and hardening of artery walls in the brain. Plaque build-up in these walls is made up of a number of components such as connective tissue, collagen, elastic fibres etc.
Blockages in these arteries can lead to a stroke, due to the plaque’s disruption of blood flow. Symptoms of a stroke may include facial drooping, weakness in the limbs, paralysis, blindness and difficulty speaking.
VENOUS DISEASES
Venous diseases are diseases that damage your veins. These diseases prevent your veins from managing blood flow as effectively as they should. The two most prevalent venous diseases are varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.
BLOOD CLOTS
Blood clots are clumps of gel-like blood that form in your arteries or veins when blood changes from liquid to partially solid. It is a normal bodily function,
however, the formation of blood clots in certain areas can be dangerous to your health.
For instance, if a blood clot moves and becomes mobile in your circulatory system, it could be fatal.
If blood clots travel to the lungs, they may cause a pulmonary embolism. A heart attack can occur if a blood clot gets to your heart. Blood clots in the brain can cause a stroke.
Poor blood circulation is a sign of several diseases, including diabetes and Raynaud’s disease. Even though these conditions aren’t circulatory diseases, they nonetheless need to be taken seriously.
Poor circulation can also be brought on by an inactive lifestyle, being overweight, and age. Poor blood circulation is more common in people over 65.

These should be included in our diets anyway, not only to help fight against depression.”
5-HTP for Weight-loss
Studies have shown that women who took 5-HTP reported a greater feeling of fullness, which led to a decreased food intake. Women who took 5-HTP also had reduced body mass index.
5-HTP for Depression
While more research is needed, some studies found that 5-HTP could support increased serotonin levels in the body, thus easing symptoms of depression.
5-HTP for Pain

DO YOU HAVE A GARLIC ALLERGY?
Garlic has been cultivated for thousands of years for its flavour and its many health benefits, so regularly that around 25 million tons of garlic are produced each year! But what happens if everyone’s go-to vampire repellent has you running for the hills too?

garlic is widely recognized all over the world and in many cultures for its health benefits and has been used in traditional medicines as an antibiotic, antifungal and antiinflammatory agent. For most people, the main discomforts associated with garlic are bad breath and body odour but for those who have an allergy to garlic, it can be a very uncomfortable experience and sometimes even
dangerous to come into contact with garlic.
We spoke to Dr Candice Royal, Paediatrician and Allergologist at The KidsAllergy Paediatric and Allergy Centre in Cape Town about allergies and what to be on the lookout for if you think you may have an allergy to garlic. “An allergy is an immune response to a food that causes symptoms in multiple systems, most commonly the skin, and may be potentially life-threatening.”

explains Dr Royal, “The reaction does not relate to the amount of the food eaten and, in many people, may be triggered by minute exposures.”
“Most people are aware of allergies to milk, egg and nuts but people can be allergic to almost any food.” says Dr Royal, “Spice allergy, including allergy to garlic, is less common and thought to occur in 1 in a 1000 people. Garlic is a very common spice used throughout the world and is thus one of the more common types of spice allergy. The prevalence of garlic allergy in children is not known but it is thought to be rare.”
An allergic reaction can cause symptoms like hives, swelling, vomiting and even difficulty breathing and collapse. “Garlic allergy can present in 3 different ways, “ says Dr Royal, “ It may cause a rash on the skin due to direct contact with the garlic allergen, breathing in garlic powder may cause asthma (shortness of breath, cough, wheeze) in allergic people or a garlic allergy may cause symptoms ranging from hives to anaphylaxis when eaten.”
Food allergies are often confused with food intolerances, but it is important to note that food intolerances are usually less severe than food allergies and symptoms are typically limited to the digestive system. As Dr Royal explains, “An intolerance is an abnormal reaction to a food that does not involve the immune system. An intolerance may be caused by a lack of an enzyme involved in the digestion of the food, such as lactose intolerance or due to a sensitivity to the chemical properties of a food, such as caffeine in coffee. Intolerances are dose-dependent so a little may not cause a problem but eat too much and symptoms may be experienced.”
With its widespread usage in a variety of foods, garlic can be a difficult substance to avoid. If you have a garlic

allergy you could be allergic to either cooked or raw garlic, or both - and you may also have some sensitivity to the other vegetables of the Liliaceae family such as onions, chives, leeks or shallots as they all have similar characteristics.

individuals and their families. Unmanaged they have a major impact on quality of life and in certain cases, can be life-threatening.”

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BESIDES THE PRICE?

long before you began scouring farmer’s markets for truffle-infused olive oils, ancient civilisations in Iran, Turkiye, Greece, Italy and Egypt were cultivating olives and extracting their oils for all sorts of wonderful uses. Historical records suggest that olive oil was used for cooking, cleaning, lighting lamps, and as medicine. Today we use it primarily in the kitchen, but take a walk through the grocery store, and you’ll be
confronted with various options ranging in colour from pale yellow to deep green and varying degrees of price.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Olive oil and extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) taste different and react differently to the cooking heat. This is because how the oil is extracted and processed is different.
Olive oil is a heart-healthy fat which promotes good cholesterol whilst reducing the bad cholesterol in the
bloodstream. This means olive oil consumption can be protective against high cholesterol, heart diseases and strokes, says Aziwe Booi, a dietician in private practice.
She explains, “Olive oils are a source of monounsaturated fats and vitamin E making it potent in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes olive oil great for skin, hair and nail health whilst supporting your immune health. These antioxidant properties reduce oxidative stress,

which is also associated with reducing the number of free radicals which tend to cause damage to your cells resulting in various types of cancers. Research has proven this by showing that olive oil can reduce the risk of various cancers.”

Sometimes labelled as “Pure Olive” or “Light Olive Oil” and usually pale yellow, it costs less than extra-virgin olive oil. This oil has been refined to remove natural impurities, which involves treating it with heat or chemicals. The flavour is almost neutral and a good option for cooking because of its higher smoke point.
EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
This oil is higher in quality, darker in colour and more flavourful. The flavour ranges in taste from batch to batch, sometimes herbal or fruity to bitter and peppery. It has not been exposed to chemical or heat treatment. It’s cold-pressed from the fruit. Unrefined
oils have a lower smoke point, meaning they burn at a lower temperature. It’s ideal for dressing and dips.
WHICH SHOULD YOU BUY?
Glynis van Rooyen, author and publisher of The Guide to Extra Virgin Olive in South Arica, explains: “Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the highest grade of virgin olive oil and has the best health benefits and flavours. Before chemical testing, Virgin Olive Oil was the best we could get – today, chemical testing puts the final stamp of quality on the product. Firstly, EVOO is the pure juice of olives processed below 30 degrees C without additives or using solvents or refining methods. Pure olive fruit juice. The chemical analysis must
show a free acidity of no more than 0.8% and peroxides lower than 20 meg/kg (an indicator of freshness). Virgin Olive Oil is a natural unrefined oil, processed at higher temperatures resulting in much lower quality oil, and it is not as tasty or healthy as EVOO.”
Numerous studies have shown that consuming EVOO can benefit our health. One study showed that women who had a Mediterranean diet supplemented with EVOO had a 62% lower risk of breast cancer than women advised to eat a low-fat diet. There’s also evidence that EVOO may protect against type 2 diabetes and possibly Alzheimer’s.

Look for the CTC seal
The CTC seal is a Commitment to Compliance with strict quality standards set by the SA Olive Industry Association. Producers must submit samples of their oil which are tasted and tested before the seal is awarded to the oil. So, the seal immediately indicates good quality, genuine extra virgin olive oil.
Check the date of production
Olive oil does not improve with age as wine does; it starts losing its essential health benefits after two years, so make sure the oil was
produced within the last 18 months. This date will be on the CTC seal or somewhere on the label in the case of no seal. (Some producers do not submit oils for CTC seals even if they produce good oil, so check the production date and go by your tastebuds.)

DIRECTIONS
For the Olive Oil Shortbread:
1. Sift the flour, sugar, a pinch of salt and the cornflour into the bowl of a stand mixer.
2. Add the vanilla, drizzle in the olive oil and cream together using the K-beater attachment.
3. Wrap in clingwrap and chill for 30 minutes to rest.
4. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with a baking sheet sprayed with grease-proof spray.
5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface to a 5mm thickness and use a round or fluted cutter, about 6cm in diameter, to cut out the shortbread rounds.
6. Use a small palette knife to transfer to the baking sheet.
7. Bake for 15 – 20 minutes until golden brown.
8. Allow to cool for a few minutes to firm up on the tray, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before decorating with the royal icing.
For the Royal Icing:
500ml icing sugar
2 egg whites
450g – 500g (865ml – 960ml) icing sugar; sifted

For the Royal Icing: 9. Place the egg whites in a bowl and whisk with a balloon whisk until just frothy. 10. Start adding the icing sugar and mix well after each addition. Add until a nice piping consistency. 11. Spoon the royal icing sugar mix into a piping bag fitted with a very small nozzle tip. Pipe an outline onto half of the biscuits and let it dry. 12. Fill the inside with royal icing and place a dried flower on top and allow it to dry
For the Strawberry Jam: 13. Add all the ingredients in a blender and blend for a few seconds, depending on how chunky you would like the consistency. 14. Place in a large pan and cook over high heat until thickened. 15. Stir constantly to prevent the mixture from burning. 16. Allow to cool down completely before assembling the biscuits
To Assemble:
17. Stack the biscuits by placing the undecorated biscuit at the bottom, then place a small dollop of strawberry jam in the centre and stack using the biscuit decorated with royal icing.

Creamy Coconut Hake With Grilled Seasonal Vegetables

Lightly pan-fried hake is the perfect, easy dinner recipe. Served with seasonal vegetables and a creamy coconut sauce to enhance the natural flavours of hake, this is a healthy recipe the whole family will love.

INGREDIENTS
• 4 MSC certified hake fillets
• ¼ cup flour
• ¾ cup coconut cream
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 2 tbsp avocado oil
• 2 tbsp fresh coriander chopped
• 50g tenderstem broccoli
• 50g baby corn
50g sugar snap speas
½ tbsp garlic flakes
Salt and pepper to taste
METHOD
1. Dry the hake fillets with a kitchen towel. Season the flour with salt and pepper. Coat hake with the seasoned flour and dust off excess flour.
2. Heat 2 tbsp. avocado oil in a pan. Place the fillets in the pan and cook for 2 minutes each side. Remove from the pan.
3. Add the coconut cream to the same pan. Leave it on the heat to simmer until it starts to thicken slightly.
4. Stir in the lemon juice and replace the fillets in the pan. Cook for a further 2 minutes, turning them half way. Mix in the coriander and taste for seasoning. Adjust the amount of salt and pepper that you add, according to taste.
5. For the grilled vegetables, first rinse the vegetables under running water. Place them in a pan with a lid for 2 minutes. This allows the vegetables to steam using the excess water. Next, remove the
lid and pour in 1 tbsp. avocado oil. Season with garlic flakes, salt and pepper and leave to sauté for 4 minutes turning them regularly.
6. Serve the hot vegetables with the hake and sauce.

SMOKY VEGAN BURGER WITH SWEET POTATO FRIES
Ingredients for the BBQ sauce
1 cup sugar-free tomato sauce
½ cup water
¼ cup apple cider vinegar with ‘the mother’
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp sweetener of choice (coconut sugar/maple syrup/ agave syrup)
2 tbsp wholegrain mustard
3 tbsp tamari
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp coriander
½ tsp ground cumin
2-3 drops of liquid smoke
Salt and pepper to taste
Ingredients for the burger patty
1 cup black beans, cooked + drained (no liquid)
1 cup sweet potato or butternut, peeled + steamed

2 cups mushrooms, roughly chopped
Half a red onion, roughly chopped
¼ cup walnuts
1 garlic clove, grated
4 tbsp brown rice flour
1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp tamari (can sub soy sauce)
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp smoked paprika

Ingredients for the sweet potato fries
2 large sweet potatoes, cut into long strips
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp smoked paprika
Pink Himalayan salt + black pepper
Method for BBQ sauce
Combine all ingredients in a blender or Nutribullet and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into a pot and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken.
Method for the burger
Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the onions, cook for a few minutes. Add the garlic, ground cumin, smoked paprika and a pinch of salt to the pan. Cook until the onions start to soften, add the mushrooms, and continue cooking for a few minutes until the mushrooms begin to brown. Add the tomato paste, coconut aminos, tamari and black pepper. Set this mixture aside.
To a food processor, add the black beans (make sure they are dry and don’t have excess liquid) and walnuts. Pulse a few times, you don’t want a smooth mixture but you want the
beans and nuts to break down a bit so they are still a little chunky, but some bits are softer and broken up like a crumble. It adds to the texture of the patty. Remove from food processor and set mixture aside. Then place the steamed sweet potato or butternut into the food processor along with the cooked onions and mushroom mix. Pulse a few times so that the mixture combines but isn’t smooth – this is the mix that will bring all the flavour to the patty.
In a bowl, combine the two mixtures together and add the brown rice flour.
If your mixture is too wet, add a bit more flour and gently mix everything together. Wet your hands and then shape the mixture into 4 burger patties. The mixture will make 4 large burger patties, but you can make 6-8 smaller ones too. The burger patties can then be Air fried or baked in an oven or cooked on a non-stick pan. Make sure to flip the burgers over gently so that they cook through on both sides.
I Air fried these burgers on high at 204C for 15 minutes, turning them over at the halfway mark and didn’t use any oil, but if you are going to bake them or cook them, I would suggest brushing them with olive oil beforehand. I added the BBQ sauce onto the burger patty

when serving but the BBQ sauce can also be used to baste the burger while cooking.
Method for sweet potato fries
Mix the olive oil, spices, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add the sweet potato strips to the bowl and make sure each piece is generously coated with the oil and spices.
The sweet potato can either be Air Fried on high at 204C for 10-15 minutes or bake in a preheated oven at 180C for 25-30 minutes. Cooking times vary depending on your Air Fryer or oven, best to flip the fries over at the halfway mark of cooking time.

WHY APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH | ‘THE MOTHER’?
Organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar is the most beneficial apple cider vinegar from a health perspective. The ‘mother’ refers to the yeast and bacteria that are formed during the fermentation process.
Ingredients for the corn “ribs”
4 corn on the cobs, cut into 16 ribs
3 tbsp olive oil + extra if needed
2 tbsp lime juice
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp paprika
Pink Himalayan salt and black pepper to taste
Ingredients for the smoky chipotle aioli
1 cup raw cashews, soaked for 4 hours or overnight
½ cup water
¼ cup lemon juice
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
½ apple cider vinegar with “the Mother”
¼ tsp chipotle paste
⅛ tsp ground white pepper
¼ tsp white miso (optional)
Pinch of Pink Himalayan salt
Method for the corn “ribs”
Be very careful cutting the corn as it takes some practice, and you may need to use a few different knives until you get the hang of it.
Serving suggestion
✓ Serve corn ribs with smoky chipotle aioli and freshly chopped parsley
Stand the corn vertically upright and slice straight through the core, then slice again so you have 4 pieces of corn. Repeat until all the corn has been cut.
Mix the remaining ingredients in a bowl and dip the corn ribs into the marinade, covering generously. I used my Air Fryer on high at 204C for 12-15 minutes to make these, but they can easily be baked as well in a preheated oven at 180C for 25-30 minutes. Once cooked they will naturally curve and bend to their desired shape.
Method for the smoky chipotle aioli
Combine all the ingredients together in a blender or Nutribullet and blend until smooth and creamy.

COCONUT & LIME PANNA COTTA WITH STRAWBERRY COULIS
Traditionally, panna cotta is a sweet Italian dessert that is made from thickening cream with gelatine to form a thick custard-like consistency. In this recipe, I have used Agar Agar – it’s made from red seaweed and basically acts like a plant-based gelatine. You can find it in most health stores or online at Faithful to Nature or Wellness Warehouse. I love this recipe because it is not only super quick and easy to make but it can also be prepared in advance as well. Simple ingredients, prepared with love and plated beautifully make for an elegant masterpiece at your next celebration.
Ingredients for the panna cotta
2 cups full-fat coconut milk
¼ cup pure maple syrup
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 tsp lime zest
1 tsp vanilla extract or half a vanilla pod
1,5 tsp agar Agar
Ingredients for the strawberry coulis
175g frozen or fresh strawberries
2 tbsp pure maple syrup
1 tbsp lime juice
Method for the panna cotta
Combine the coconut milk, maple syrup, lime zest, lime juice and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer and make sure the mixture doesn’t boil. In a small bowl, mix the agar Agar powder with a little bit of room-temperature water to form a milky white liquid. Add to the saucepan and continue to mix for 3-4 minutes. If using a vanilla pod, remove it before dividing the mixture into 4 glasses or ramekins. Allow to cool to room temperature and then refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight.

Method for the strawberry coulis
Combine all the ingredients together in a small pot and bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Turn the heat down and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Allow to cool and blend until smooth. Strain the mixture and divide evenly across the 4 refrigerated Panna Cotta’s. The coulis can also be stored in a clean jar and refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Directions
1. Steam the pumpkin until soft then place into a bowl together with the cinnamon and honey.
2. Using a fork, mash well and set aside to cool.

4. To assemble, place a little granola into a serving glass, followed by the yoghurt and then top with the pumpkin parfait.

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust conducts vital conservation and research programs to protect the biodiversity of the critically important and fragile marine ecosystem surrounding Dyer Island.
Founded in 2006 by Wilfred Chivell, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, proud member of the Cape Country Routes, operates in Gansbaai’s incredibly vibrant and diverse marine environment in the Western Cape. This area is home to the Marine Big 5 and is a hotspot for the great white shark, dolphins, Southern Right whales, Cape Fur seals, the endangered African penguin, and plenty of other incredible seabirds.
Marine Conservation has historically been given little attention and this gap in the scientific arena necessitates new and interesting ongoing research
programs. This will enable us to learn more about our precious marine species and the habitats in which they reside and conservation efforts to ensure that they are protected for future generations.
We spoke to Christine Wessels at the Dyer Island Conservation Trust & Marine Dynamics to find out more about their incredible conservation efforts and what we as the public can do to help.
WHAT IS CONSERVATION AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The basic definition of conservation is preserving and safeguarding the environment for the benefit of coming
generations.
At the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, we DO Conservation. We discover through research and observation. We make a difference, we act and we get things done. We are part of the environment we live in. We see and feel the changes. We take responsibility.
Our research helps us to identify the origin, the cause and possible solutions to a problem. Solutions need to be implemented, policies need to change, legislation must be adapted and action must be taken.
The African Penguin is just one great example of the importance of

Conservation. South Africa’s only penguin species have been classified as endangered and could be extinct in the wild before 2030.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE PROJECTS THAT THE TRUST WORKS ON?
The Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s purpose and overall intention is outlined in the mission statement of Discover, Protect, Educate and Collaborate and some of the projects that we work on include:
• African penguin conservation which includes a nest project providing critical protection during the penguin fledgling stage; and in 2015 DICT opened a rehabilitation facility, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary.
• Invaluable research on Great White sharks by marine biologists includes tagging and tracking, behavioural surveys, wound healing, environmental parameter monitoring and population studies.
• The collection of shark egg cases on designated beaches helps identify species distribution and breeding timing of smaller shark species.
• We support the annual aerial survey
of the Southern Right whales. We collaborate with researchers to observe & record the endangered Humpback dolphin. We collect images of Bryde’s whales for the national database.
• We are part of the National Stranding Response Network. The Trust is the first port of call for marine animal rescues in the area.
• We are part of the National Whale Disentanglement Programme.
• Our Environmental Education Programme known as DEEP educates a dedicated group of young learners for three years measuring the impact and growth of each individual.
• We host monthly Marine evenings to inform and educate people about our environment.
• Marine pollution efforts include the unique fishing line bin project, monthly beach clean-ups, and storm drain catchment nets.

WHEN TO VISIT THE DRAKENSBERG
Many consider autumn (March to April) and spring through to early summer (September to December) the best time to visit the Drakensberg. The Drakensberg can get nippy in winter so if you prefer the warmer temps, spring to summer should suit you best.
The summer months normally mean daily thunderstorms, while wintertime (normally June to August) generally sees snow on the mountains.

on a recent trip, I was reminded again how travelling can reset the body, inspire you and give you much-needed perspective. Besides, it is also beneficial for your health and good for the soul. It also provides an opportunity to see new places and experience other cultures, do new things, eat yummy food, and meet interesting people…do we need any more reasons to travel?
My love for travel started at a young age. Travelling all over SA with my parents was one of the biggest gifts
they have ever given me. One of my fondest memories as a youngster was a visit to the Safari Ostrich Farm in Oudtshoorn in the 90s…who doesn’t have a great childhood memory of travelling to Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves?

5 SHY MEERKAT EXPERIENCE, DE ZEEKOE GUEST FARM
De Zeekoe Guest Farm just 7km outside Oudtshoorn is another treasure of the Cape Country Routes Collection and offers an activity I am certain you have never done before – the 5 Shy Meerkat Experience. We rose early one morning to hopefully have ‘breakfast’ with this member of the Shy 5. Upon arrival, you can enjoy a hot chocolate or coffee with homemade rusks before grabbing your chair & blanket and walking to their burrows. Patience is key but so worth seeing these creatures in their natural habitat. Devey our guide gave us
extended insight into their world and kept us entertained with his stories of observing these little guys since 2008. Booking is essential and weather dependent as meerkats will not venture outside their burrows on rainy days.

AGULHAS COUNTRY LODGE
We left the Klein Karoo in our reliable Ford Everest and travelled 4 hours to L’Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. We booked into the Agulhas Country Lodge, owned by Sue and Phil Fenwick who built this oldest guest house on the southernmost tip of Africa in 1997 and have been operating it ever since along with daughter Chelsea at the GM helm. Agulhas Country Lodge is another hallmark
member of Cape Country Routes. Built from natural limestone that blends into the background of the rocky hill and thanks to its elevated position there are remarkable sea views from nearly every viewpoint.
The lodge has eight en-suite rooms and the two honeymoon suites are fitted with jacuzzi baths and double showers. All rooms have sea-view balconies with modern amenities.
We enjoyed a glass of wine in the cosy, fully stocked bar while owner Phil told us stories from his days as a helicopter pilot in the South African Airforce. The bar counter was the original bank counter from the Koegas Village, a mining town that was built in 1888 and decommissioned in 1977. Most of the lodge, although it is a relatively new building, was constructed using old Oregon pine windows and doors bought on auction in the Kalahari from the demolished Koegas asbestos mining town. The

windows in the passages originate from the Koegas prison. A hotel close to the mine provided yellowwood door lintels and the doors to the lodges’ cigar lounge.
All in all, uniting a combination of combining a combination of old and new has created an unusual atmosphere which blends well with the stark natural surroundings of L’Agulhas.
Sue’s passion for food is evident as she spoilt us with the most delightful vegetarian meal starting with a delicious roasted cauliflower and garlic soup served with a lovely homemade gluten-free seed loaf, followed by a
creamy tomato, spinach, and feta risotto, yum! For dessert, she presented avocado mousse and wafer served with a brush of lemon curd. We honestly did not expect such a gastronomical treat.
Breakfast is served daily, and lunch and dinner can be supplied when booked in advance for groups of 8 or more.
Activities are plentiful. Swim at the longest uninterrupted natural white beach in SA at nearby Struisbaai or take a dip at one of the two tidal pools within walking distance of the lodge. We set off early one morning on a hike from the
lodge into the Agulhas National Park, past the second-oldest working lighthouse in South Africa to find the point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet – a must-see attraction. Continue and encounter the Meisho Maro shipwreck, a Japanese fishing vessel that ran aground in 1982. You will also come across ancient Khoisan fishing traps and kilometres of untouched coastline.
