FRONT PORCH HOSPITALITY is a Texas tradition.

beautiful 1930’s craftsman style front porch is the centerpiece of Lake Cities Community Church’s newly renovated exterior. “The front porch represents community. It is a place to get to know people,” said founding pastor Craig Schill. “The front porch is a place to hang out or develop life long friendships. Young and old, married or single—no matter your life experience the front porch is inviting,” Schill added. To make everyone feel welcome the church sings a mix of old hymns and new contemporary songs. Sunday School for all ages is offered at 9:30am, followed by a worship service at 10:45. Small groups, children’s ministry, youth group, women’s ministry, men’s ministry and bible studies are also available to help people grow spiritually. Lake Cities Community Church began in 2007 with a vision to serve the local community. Lake Cities has twice received “Business of the Month” recognition by the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce.

“Our church was founded on four purposes,” Pastor Schill continued, “Worshiping, growing, loving and sharing. We seek to worship God and grow spiritually as we love one another and share our faith. That is what we are about.”

After meeting in a variety of locations, including the Rowlett Bowl-a-Rama and Cullins-Lake Pointe Elementary School, in 2012 the church purchased land at the corner of Liberty “It is unusual for a church to receive a business award,” said Pastor Schill. “But we are passionate about following Grove and Princeton. Renovation of the sanctuary began in 2014. the example of Jesus who did not come to be served, but to serve.” “We set out to create a unique facility that Rowlett could be proud of. Just as we have transformed this building, God can transform a person’s life. And we especially love our front porch. We want to be known as a church with front porch hospitality!”

This catalytic transit-oriented development, anticipated to break ground in summer of 2015, will change the face of Downtown Rowlett! Rowlett . . . where we started As you scan across beautiful Lake Ray Hubbard at the homes, schools, businesses and parks that comprise Rowlett, it is hard to imagine this thriving community of 56,000 had less than 6000 residents only 40 years ago. Go back a little over 150 years, and Rowlett didn’t exist. There was nothing but fertile land, good trees and open skies. Scattered among the acres and acres of empty land and creeks were a few families who spent well over a month traveling by covered wagon, bumping across prairie behind Daniel Rowlett who had received land for his military service. Families with names like Buhler, Compton, Coyle, Kirby, Herfurth, McEntee, Nelson, Oliver, Parker, Schrade, Shugart and Tinsley. Names that are now synonymous with Rowlett, as it was their tenaciousness that carved the path for the city we have today.

These first families were farmers, men and women from Germany and Ireland who knew how to work the land. They used their knowledge in the first year to grow crops that would help their family and livestock survive. In the second year, they planted cotton. In the late 1800’s cotton was a hot commodity. In fact, if you want to know why Rowlett is on the map, look no further than cotton. If you want to know why electricity came to Rowlett, look no further than cotton. In the 1930’s Rowlett was still an oil town. Not an oil town like the ones west of us, but an oil town as in lit only by oil lamps. No electricity pulsed through the town yet. By 1930, most cities and large towns had electricity but it had not yet made its way to rural areas. Rowlett would have been in the dark for several more years had it not been for Mr. Coyle who made an agreement with Texas Power and light. TP&L told Mr. Coyle they would build a transmission line to downtown Rowlett if he would build an all electric cotton gin. Thanks to this agreement, Rowlett turned off their oil lamps and turned on the lights in 1935. It wasn’t only the cotton kings who were there to support the community, although many of them also owned businesses in town. In 1893, J.W. Kirby built a General Store that stands to this day at 3805 Main Street. Vernon Schrade, a lifelong resident whose Father was one of the town founders said, “there were as many Kirby’s around town as there were ducks and geese”. Mr. Kirby along

with merchants like Schrade and Buhler did a good deal of business without money exchanging hands. Farming takes a lot of supplies up front and the pay doesn’t come until later. The sons and grandsons of these merchants inherited bushel barrels of receipts, a promise of later payment, which was always received. The willingness to lend a helping hand is one of the strongest legacies of these early leaders. Leaders like Pat McEntee. Mr. McEntee was not only known for the pecan tree in front of his Cotton Gin on Chiesa Road, but for generously giving his land to the town. Land Rowlett Square is on today. He also donated land for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and cemetery. Another McEntee known for offering a helping hand was J.C. McEntee. He was the community lawyer. The farmers turned to him whenever they needed advice on how to maneuver federal farm programs. J.C. was also a Notary and kept his notary seal conveniently located in the safe on his back porch. Before 1954, all the drinking water in Rowlett rolled off the roof into buckets or fell from the sky into cisterns. Since incorporating and officially becoming Rowlett in 1952, the town had been trying to drill a well. James Coyle had donated land for the well but there was over $40,000 in unmarketable bonds standing in the way of a dependable water source. A little thing like $40,000 wasn’t going to stop Rowlett from getting a well. Not with Mr. Coyle and Mr. Buhler around. Mr. Buhler, the first Mayor of Rowlett, bought around $5000 of the bonds with his own money and Mr. Coyle used his skills in diplomacy to get his friend at the Garland bank to loan him $35,000. In 1954, Rowlett got its well.

where we are today

The leaders of Rowlett have always had the ability to change with the times. Merchants realized entertainment was good for the city and profitable. Jim Lewis had a café renowned for delicious 10-cent burgers. Vernon Schrade said he was willing to trade marbles and pocketknives just for a bite. Most of these early families were involved in every aspect of the community. They donated land for schools and fire stations. Kirby’s general store also housed the first telephone exchange. Everyone did what was needed in order to help the community. Often that meant wearing many hats.

Since then, new leaders have emerged and followed these ideals. Transforming Rowlett from a small agricultural town into what Money Magazine has ranked “ONE OF THE BEST 25 PLACES TO LIVE.” This is no surprise to Vernon Schrade or the other families who have made this their home for generations. Rowlett has come a long way from where it started. The Dart rail has a stop just north of Main Street and is bringing new businesses to downtown, just as the railroad did back in 1886. The secret to this community’s success is that it has always been, and continues to be A TOWN OF HELPING HANDS. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) YEA! is a groundbreaking nine-month program that guides students in grades 6-12 through the process of starting a real business, including business plan development, pitching an investor panel, obtaining funding, launching the venture, managing media campaigns, e-commerce and web development, sales events, and trade shows. Students, ages 11 to 18, are taught to recognize the power of their ideas, and to develop the skills necessary to turn those ideas into meaningful enterprises. Local businesses provide instruction, mentorship, field trips and resources to these hardworking students for their start up endeavors. The program serves students in 6th through
