f all Thailand’s islands, Koh Lanta is one of the best allrounders. Less than an hour’s boat ride from Krabi, Koh Lanta is actually made up of several little islands, the most visited of which is Koh Lanta Yai. It has got nature reserves and beaches where you won’t see another soul; it’s got accommodation that runs the gamut from spare to super-swanky, which attract more 30-, 40- and 50-something travellers than backpackers. Bringing the children? The waters are calm and the island safe. See our article on Koh Lanta on page 32 for more details about this wonderful island. Not sure if you should get vaccinated from rare diseases before heading off on a tropical vacation or just taking a trek through the jungles of SE Asia? Or maybe you want to get vaccinated but have no idea which vaccinations to ask for? Check out page 42 for a thorough discussion of which, if any, shots and pills you will need to keep you well. Remember, “Better safe than sorry!”

If you’re visiting Thailand for the first time or you have lived here forever, a visit to Chiang Rai in Thailand’s north is a must. Not only is the climate a little cooler there, it has its own distinctive culture. Food, language, architect, and dress are very distinct here from other parts of the Kingdom. It truly is like visiting another country. Get more information about this wonderful city in this issue.

Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon Festival Phi Ta Khon is one of the most colourful traditional festivals of Loei province and it offers a unique experience to anyone who visits. Phi Ta Khon is a distinct masked procession which takes place on the first day of the three-day Buddhist merit-making holiday called Boon Prawat in Thai. This annual event, known to visitors as The Ghost Festival takes place in June, usually the first week after the 6th full moon of the year. This year it will be held from 27-29 June, 2014 in the village of Dan Sai in Loei. The whole event is called Bun Luang, and the great highlight of this unique festival is a long, colourful parade of young men who dance and strike poses while wearing huge masks made from carved coconut-tree trunks, topped with wicker work and sticky-rice steamers. These represent ghosts and as they parade they carry a sacred Buddha image. It is thought that the festival originated as a form of spirit worship with music and dancing to appease the spirits who protect the local villages and ensure plenty of rain for the upcoming harvest season. On the second day of the festival, the villagers gather at the temple of Wat Ponchai to listen to the thirteen sermons of Prince Vessandorn being recited by local monks. Important Event dates and program details may be subject to change. Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand’s official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past. Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2014
12
This July, the province of Ubon Ratchathani in northeastern Thailand, will be celebrating its annual Candle Festival from 11-21 July, 2014. The festival which traditionally marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent shows the local people’s devotion to Buddhist traditions while allowing them to showcase their renowned candle-carving skills.
The stunning parades start out from the front of Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram and head along the road as far as Thung Sri Mueang. Taking part in the parade are dancers and musicians in traditional costume. In addition, there is also an International Wax Sculpture Competition in which artists from all over the world come here to display their works of art.
The highlight of the much-anticipated events is the parade of beautifully-carved candles and floral floats which takes place on the day of Khao Phansa Day, the starting date for lent when the Monks take to their temples for the rainy season. The procession also features a special Royal Candle sent by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, as well as ornately carved beeswax candles and sculptures made by the local people especially for the festival.

anti-aging IN THAILAND words: Steven Storm
T
hailand’s medical & wellness industry offers treatments that suit any patient’s needs, whether they are looking for traditional care or alternative medicine. And one such alternative is holistic medicine which attempts to heal by engaging one’s entire presence – body, mind, and spirit – as it pursues maximum health. Holistic medicine is comprised of many different kinds of therapies that aim to not only treat illnesses after they have arisen, but to care for the person as a complete being, focusing on sickness prevention and health promotion. One of its main principles is that our emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical attributes are all connected and therefore an important part of being healthy is to have harmony between these four aspects. As a way of maintaining one’s well-being, holistic medicine tries to accomplish what we’ve always been told to do – which is to “take care of our health” – so we can live long and prosperous lives. As such, it has come to be an effective approach to antiaging or longevity treatments, which attempt to slow down our aging and allow us to grow old healthily with a high quality of life in our later years.
In Thailand, many facilities offering anti-aging treatments are in fact using holistic methods, which have led to a gradual integration of the two types of care, and a wide array of “holistic/anti-aging” treatments and clinics. These centers perform thorough check-ups of an individual’s body, including complete bioresonance body scans, blood analyses, and ECGs (electrocardiograms) to design a treatment program that is suited to their needs. Programs include liver detoxifications, intravenous vitamin and antioxidant infusions, plus things like chelation therapy (which removes heavy metals from the blood), oxygen therapy (which assists in keeping our immune system healthy and active), and hormone replacement therapies (HRT). Aesthetic treatments are also popular in holistic/anti-aging programs, such as laser skin resurfacing, botox injections, and dermal fillers to reduce wrinkles and improve skin tone; non-surgical face lift procedures; and cellulite elimination and various weight loss regimes. In addition to holistic treatments, the prescription from anti-aging doctors is

for patients to concentrate on taking better care of their skin, improve their diets, and make the necessary lifestyle changes conducive to better health. Detoxifying and cleansing the body through the consumption of nutritional food and supplements, daily exercise, and healthy habits are paramount to slowing the aging process. Their recommendations often focus on the integration of a person’s lifestyle, diet, fitness regime, and stress management procedures, and consultations with doctors result in personalized holistic programs. Other things they may recommend are yoga, meditation, music therapy, hydrotherapy, reflexology, and various traditional treatments like Ayurveda, Thai massage, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has a long history of dealing with the issue of aging. The Dr. Orawan Holistic Institute, founded by its namesake doctor, Dr. Orawan Kitchawengkul, is an award-winning holistic institute offering first-class cosmetic dermatology, anti-aging medicine, and anti-cancer treatments. he sings, dances, acts and her entourage is more impressive than her famous behind. Thrice married J-Lo reveals how she went from plain backing dancer to diamond-encrusted diva.
Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born to Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe (a kindergarten teacher) and David, a computer specialist. Lopez and her two sisters, Leslie and Lynda, grew up in a small apartment where their mother encouraged them to entertain each other with theatrical performances in the front room. With a taste for the limelight, Lopez began singing and dancing lessons from the age of five and ignored academic studies at school, instead preferring to pursue sports and the arts. At age of 16, Lopez won her first film role in My Little Girl and while it failed to kick start her career immediately, it gave her a taste of the fame game. After graduating from high school, Lopez enrolled at Baruch College in Manhattan and also worked in a legal office to fund her dance and singing progression. Her college life only lasted one term before she dropped out to concentrate on her career dream and she began auditioning for dance roles. Lopez was eventually selected as a dancer for various music videos and scored her biggest break as a backing dancer in Janet Jackson’s That’s The Way Love Goes video in 1993. 1997 was to be a big year for Lopez both personally and professionally. Firstly came a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her turn in the film Selena and she also met Ojani Noa, a waiter at a Miami restaurant. At the wrap party for ‘Selena’, Noa grabbed the microphone and offered a Lopez a diamond ring in the middle of the dance floor. Lopez accepted and the pair married the same year but were divorced by January 1998. After the somewhat questionable Anaconda movie, which did well at the box office despite being panned by critics, it was to be Steven Soderburgh’s Out of Sight in 1998 that was to truly highlight Lopez’s potential. Starring alongside George Clooney, the film’s success saw both stars suddenly being taken seriously.

Lopez’s profile was now sky high. ‘Out Of Sight’ had worked its magic and, thanks to a big entrance at the Oscars ceremony that year, she scored a modelling contract with L’Oreal. Lopez’s flair for entertainment extended beyond acting though and a call from Sony records was too tempting to ignore. Her debut album, On The 6 (a reference to the subway line she used to take when she was growing up), was released in June 1999 and made the top 10 in the US charts. Lopez’s winning streak was evident, with the album earning a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording and two nominations at the Latin Grammy Awards also. It was during the making of the album that Lopez was to meet Sean Combs (then known as Puff Daddy), who was helping produce the album. Their twoand-half-year relationship was splashed across the media regularly and the press feasted on one particular story which

The pair were stopped by police after the incident and a stolen gun was found in the front seat of their car for which Lopez was initially charged for gun possession, but charges were dropped later after her appeal that she was in the back seat of the car during transit. Needless to say, the hype and stress surrounding the drama would fizzle the romance and Lopez split from Combs a year later. 2001 was to prove an eventful year in all aspects of Lopez’s life. 2001 was to prove an eventful year in all aspects of Lopez’s life. First came a hit film, The Wedding Planner, then a release of her second album, J-Lo, and her second wedding. It seemed lady luck was still on Lopez’s side come 2002. With yet another number one album under her
belt it was to be her romance with actor Ben Affleck that was to create a worldwide stir. The couple met on the set of the film Gigli and love soon blossomed. The relationship spawned publicity off the scale, with the pair being re-named ‘Bennifer’ and Affleck even appearing in her music video for the single Jenny from the Block. Lopez hit the headlines once again in 2004 when she secretly married salsa star Marc Anthony. They had briefly dated in the late 1990s, before his first marriage and her second, and unlike the mar of both their previous marriages, the two remain together and announced in November 2007 that they were expecting their first child together (later confirmed to be twins).
Beyond her busy acting and singing schedule, Lopez has also formed her own production company, Nuyorican her own clothing line and a range of perfumes which have topped many sales records. Lopez has become one of the biggest multi-media stars in the world - her only sign of slowing down will be that she’s now a mum for the first time to twins, a boy and girl born in February 2008. In 2010, it was announced that Jennifer Lopez would be joining the judging panel on season ten of American Idol. Inspired by her gay aunt who had died, Lopez signed on as executive producer of the television series The Fosters, which is about a same sex couple raising a family. The show
premiered on ABC Family on June 3, 2013, and has since been a ratings success for the network. Later that June, Lopez performed at the birthday of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Doing so, she garnered widespread backlash for performing for the leader of a “repressive, authoritarian regime”. Lopez returned as judge on American Idol for its thirteenth season for a reported salary of $17.5 million. After the conclusion of her Dance Again World Tour, Lopez began recording her eighth studio album, inspired by her travels. It will be released in 2014 through Capitol Records. In January 2014, she released two promotional songs from the album: “Same Girl” and “Girls”. In March, she released the album’s

In April, the official song for the 2014 FIFA World Cup performed by Pitbull, Lopez and Brazilian recording artist Claudia Leitte, “We Are One (Ole Ola)”, was released. She will star in the risqué low-budget thriller The Boy Next Door, the independent film Lila & Eve (alongside Viola Davis), and the animated feature Home (alongside Steve Martin and Rihanna). Lopez will also venture into television. NBC has ordered a 13-episode television drama, in which Lopez will executive produce and star. postcards FROM KOH LANTA words: Steve Martin
K
oh Lanta is a 25 km long island off the Andaman coast of Thailand, south of Phuket and Krabi. Renowned for its long beaches, quiet seclusion, and natural beauty both above and below the water, Koh Lanta is a beach lover’s and scuba diver’s paradise. Located 70 km south of Krabi, Koh Lanta features a pair oflarge islands so close to the Thai mainland that it is not inconceivable that bridges will someday be built to connect them to each other and to the mainland. It may be many years before this happens however, as Koh Lanta is already a popular Thai beach holiday destination, but it is still a long way from the development and popularity of nearby Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. Technically a group of islands including the two largest, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai, Koh Lanta is the name of an administrative district in Krabi Province, though when referring to Koh Lanta most people mean Koh Lanta Yai, where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The prime attractions on Koh Lanta are its long beaches, clear water, and laid back atmosphere. Even after a decade of development that has resulted in the construction of a few of the finest beach resorts in Thailand, the sheer size of Koh Lanta’s west coast ensures that there is plenty of space for visitors to enjoy a relaxing holiday even in the height of peak season in late December and early January.
32
The west coast of Koh Lanta features nine beaches along its 25 km shore, most which are great for swimming and ideal for long, romantic walks and sunset views. It’s a great place for a family vacation or a romantic escape. The most developed areas of the island are on the northwest shore, particularly the beaches of Klong Dao and Long Beach (Phra Ae). These beaches feature the highest density of resorts and tourist services, though this is still a relative term as they are well distributed along the beach and up on the main road. Farther south the beaches become more secluded and the road terminates at a national marine park. In fact, beach hopping from north to south, either by rental car, motorbike, or long-tail boat is one of the great attractions of Koh Lanta. The island is also a scuba diver’s paradise as there are many coral reefs, limestone outcrops, seamounts, pinnacles, and undersea caves around Koh Lanta and nearby islands. The main tourist office on Koh Lanta is located at Baan Saladan, where visitors arriving via car-ferry or boat first arrive. Baan Saladan has the highest concentration of banks, dive shops, markets, medical clinics, and motorbike rental services. Koh Lanta’s post office is located in the east coast of Koh Lanta, in Baan Koh Lanta (Lanta Old Town), which serves as the islands capital.Koh Lanta is an island province

consisting of 52 islands. Koh Lanta Yai, the largest of the islands, is located approximately 70 kilometers from Krabi town and can be visited either by car-ferry from the mainland or boat from Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, or Phuket. As Koh Lanta lies just south of the Andaman coast’s prime attractions, namely Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and Phuket, it has maintained its laid-back atmosphere, even as Koh Lanta has slowly developed to include some of Thailand’s finest beach resorts. Still, Koh Lanta remains an amazing beach destination for families, couples, backpackers, and scuba divers: anyone who is looking for a Thai island that has not succumbed to overdevelopment but still has many options in regards to accommodation and activities. Koh Lanta Yai is 6km wide and over 30 km long, featuring nine golden sand beaches and a diverse terrain, including mangroves, waterfalls, and forested hills. A paved road runs from the north to the south of the island, parallel to the coast, and provides access to the headquarters of the

Mu Koh Lanta National Park and the lighthouse on the southern tip. Just south of Koh Lanta Yai lay the islands of Koh Ngai, Koh Kradan and Koh Muk, all of which offer equally stunning beaches and snorkeling and even greater seclusion. The primary attractions on Koh Lanta are its beautiful beaches and the stunning waters of the Andaman Sea. Long strolls on the beach and beachhopping aboard a long tail boat are some of the most common activities on the island. The interior of the island also features several waterfalls and caves that can be explored on foot, with a rental jeep, or even aboard elephant. Other attractions are the nearby islands that are top destinations for diving, snorkeling, or sea kayaking, such as Emerald Cave on Koh Muk and the dive sites at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. There are also a couple of interesting villages on the island, including the sea gypsy village and the town of Baan Koh Lanta.
The primary attractions on Koh Lanta are its beautiful beaches and the stunning waters of the Andaman Sea.
When To Visit Koh Lanta The high season on Koh Lanta is from November to April, and this is when the weather is driest and most people visit. The rainy season (or green season as it is known here) is from May to October, and it isn’t a bad time to visit as it is very quiet and hotels vastly reduce their rates by 50% or more.

oman LAND OF THE SULTANS words: Peter Houlsen
I
consider myself very fortunate to have lived and travelled in south eastern Arabia at a time when the way of life there was much the same as it had always been, little changed since its place names first began to appear on scantily-filled maps.
Its harsh environment was supportive of only a small population, ranking as one of the lowest densities in the world and surviving at little more than a minimum subsistence level. From the air, much of the region resembled a moonscape, forsaken and devoid of life. But civilized life there was.
With the discovery of oil in the Middle East, first in Persia in 1908 and later in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States in 1938, this whole region embarked on a massive programme of modernisation and development and the landscape changed beyond all recognition.
Today, skyscrapers and Bedouin tents, luxury cars side by side with camels ... nowhere else in the world can such marked contrasts in culture be found as within this region between the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean. A closer look reveals that carefully preserved traditions and unlimited trust in modern technology can combine to create a society which is a model of political stability and tolerance, with high standards of living, exceptional healthcare and unsurpassed attractions for the most discerning of travellers. Roads meet at Nizwa, Oman’s ancient capital and still one of the country’s most rewarding destinations. I lingered longer than I intended here, dividing my time between the huge 17th century fort in the centre of town and the rambling souks that cluster beneath its walls. Nizwa also gives access to the off-road drive into the ravine of Wadi Bani Auf: superbly scenic but also, in the words of the Rough Guide, “nerve-janglingly dramatic”. Or you could head west to the peak of Jabal Shams, at 3,005 metres (9,800 ft) above sea level, the highest mountain in Oman. Be sure
to make time here for the astounding Balcony Walk, an easy round-trip along precipitous mountain-side paths where blue sky stretches endlessly above miles of dizzying, thousandmetre-deep canyons. Seismically-distorted folds jut into the sky, framing palm-shaded pools in which children splash, families picnic and the ribbon of fertility loses itself in the arid cliffs. Eastern Oman’s classic adventure is the Wahiba Sands. At the dusty frontier town of Al Minitirib, I met with a local guide for an exhilaratingly bumpy drive over moguls out into the ochre desert, where a scattering of luxury tented camps hide. Sheltered by rippled dunes under the starlight, this has to be one of the most memorable, magical ways to spend a night. Along the coast north of Muscat, you could head into Sohar, a port city with a long history but regrettably little to show for it, bar one splendid old whitewashed fort. From here head west to the Emirati-border oasis city of Al Ain, boasting the 19th century Jahili Fort, with its excellent history museum profiling one of the 20th century’s greatest explorers, Sir Wilfred Thesiger. But at sunrise the beach is deserted, and I walked for many hours beside the dawn-lit ocean. As I picked my way between turtle nests, a tiny hatchling caught my eye, skittering wildly over the pristine sand. I shadowed it on the most dangerous journey of its life, keeping the gulls

know your vaccinations for visiting or staying in thailand words: Gavin Wadell
I
lthough health facilities in Thailand are of a high standard and most modern day medication and treatments are readily available, it is still prudent to be aware of the risk of any infection or disease and take proper steps to get protection from them. Risk factors to be taken into consideration include location, whether in rural areas or in towns and cities, time of year, altitude, length of stay, present health and past history of health including age, underlying disease etc. The table below gives a brief description of some of the more common health issues and vaccinations you should have for either travel or long term stay in Thailand. Several of the below diseases are spread by mosquito bite. Due diligence can be taken to reduce infection by covering exposed areas of skin particularly during mid morning and early evening. A good brand of mosquito repellant should also be applied and any areas containing stagnant water such as tires and plant pots which are favored by mosquitoes for egg laying and further breeding should be removed. Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV).It is usually spread by close personal contact and by eating food
or drinking water contaminated with HAV. Vaccine is recommended for all travelers over one year of age. It should be given at least two weeks (preferably four weeks or more) before departure. A booster should be given 6-12 months later to confer long-term immunity.
Several of the below diseases are spread by mosquito bite. Due diligence can be taken to reduce infection by covering exposed areas of skin particularly during mid morning and early evening.
Typhoid: Typhoid is a serious disease and causes a high fever, weakness, stomach pains, headache, and loss of appetite. If it is not treated it can cause death in around 30 % of people infected. The disease is generally spread by contaminated food or water. There are two types of vaccination for typhoid available, either by injection or by orally through the mouth. A combined vaccination against typhoid and hepatitis A is now available and is particularly useful if traveling in Thailand.
Malaria: Prophylaxis with Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) or doxycycline is recommended for rural areas bordering Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, including Mae Hong Son. Rare local cases have been reported from Phang Nga and Phuket; insect protection measures but not malaria pills are not recommended for these two areas. Dengue Fever: a flu-like illness sometimes complicated by hemorrhage or shock, is highly prevalent in Thailand. The number of cases usually peaks during the rainy season (ranging from May through November), when mosquitoes proliferate. A total of 26,000 cases and 33 deaths were reported nationwide for the first four months of 2013. A dengue outbreak was reported from Phuket in April 2013, causing more than 300 cases. Dengue is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite primarily in the daytime and favor densely populated areas, though they also inhabit rural environments. No vaccine is available at this time. Insect protection measures are strongly advised such as covering exposed areas of the body especially early morning and early evening, mosquito repellent, and removing any areas of stagnant water in the vicinity of your home.
Japanese Encephalitis: Japanese Encephalitis is a serious infection caused by a virus and is found in rural parts of Asia. The virus is spread to humans by mosquito bites infected with the virus, although it cannot be spread from person to person. Risk of infection is actually low for travelers though are higher for those living in rural areas for long periods of time. Thankfully infection rates are rare; however mortality is high with around 1 in 4 people dying from the virus. Symptoms include high fever, headache and encephalitis a brain infection from which the virus gets its name. Vaccination is given in two does around 28 days apart and the first dose should be administered at least 1 week before you intend to travel.

Hepatitis B:
Influenza:
Vaccine is recommended for all travelers if not previously vaccinated. Two vaccines are currently licensed in the United States: A full series consists of three intramuscular doses given at 0, 1 and 6 months. Engerix-B is also approved for administration at 0, 1, 2, and 12 months, which may be appropriate for travelers departing in less than 6 months. Side-effects are generally mild and may include discomfort at the injection site and low-grade fever. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) occur rarely.
The three most common strains of influenza in Thailand are seasonal influenza, Type B influenza, and H1N1 and protection against all three can received through one combination shot given on a yearly basis. In general if you are a young healthy adult with no apparent underlying diseases then vaccination against influenza may not be deemed necessary for you. However, the following groups are recommended to have the influenza vaccination: aged 50 years and over, women who are pregnant over the influenza season, children aged 6 months – 4 years old, and people who have certain chronic conditions. The influenza season in Thailand typically lasts during the rainy season from May until around November – December.
Rabies: Any animal bite or scratch should be thoroughly cleaned with large amounts of soap and water and local health authorities should be contacted immediately for possible post-exposure treatment, whether or not the person has been immunized against rabies. The incubation period for rabies actually takes several weeks, however once the disease has reached a certain stage in the body there is no treatment for it. It is vital to contact the nearest treatment facility as soon as possible. Tetanus-diphtheria: Tetanus is a serious disease that causes painful tightening of the muscles. It can lead to locking of the jaw causing severe restrictions on opening the mouth and swallowing and in some cases can be fatal. Td is tetanus – diphtheria vaccine for adults as a booster around every 10 years or after exposure to tetanus from an animal bite or other wounds which cause the skin to be broken.

Fortunately for tourists, Chiang Rai is also a center for community development projects, helping rural villagers develop their attractions without adversely affecting their natural and cultural assets. For a special memory, we suggest to “Get Higher than the Clouds on Thailand’s Glorious Phu Chi Fa.” Loosely translated from the Thai, Phu Chi Fa means “hill that points to the sky,” and anyone who’s ever visited knows exactly what this means. Phu Chi Fa Forest Park is a protected area surrounding the cliff at lower elevations (from the peak down to about 1,200 meters) that is covered in primary forest featuring a wide variety of lush evergreens, plus several other tree species, and a diverse array of ground-covering plants like ferns, different kinds of moss, and of many types of grass and, due to the cooler climate, lots of colorful flowering shrubs. The fauna is diverse here too, with many mammals, birds, amphibians, and even fish in their natural habitats. Like the Chinese proverb informs us, the journey is the reward. And in the case of Phu Chi Fa, if it’s not the reward then it’s at least a large portion of the pleasure. Besides trekking through the verdant and abundant forest en route to the
peak, there are many other things to enjoy along the way, such as one of the nearby Hmong hill-tribe villages. There, people flourish by living basic, traditional lives in the mountains far from the rest of the developed world. Visitors can enjoy the laid-back village life, experience the local culture, and support local artisans by purchasing their handmade arts and crafts. From Chiang-Rai you can also stop at the neighboring Thai-Lao border market where customary Thai and Lao textiles and handicrafts are on offer, or, on certain days each month, visit with Lao tribal people who hike over the mountains into Thailand to set up a market for their goods. Phu Sang National Park is also part of Doi Pha Mon Mountain Range. For a real heavenly treat visitors
should not miss the single-level, 25-meter high Phu Sang Waterfall. The amazing thing is that the falling water emanates from a spring above at a temperature of 35°C. The surroundings are abundant evergreen forest and freshwater swamp forest, and you can view the gentle cascade of hot mineral water as it joins the river below, or look from the top and take in the hot springs from which it originates. Be sure to pack a bathing suit so you can enjoy a totally unique swimming experience, and even a picnic lunch. Visitors to Phu Chi Fa can stay overnight at local villages Ban Rom Fa Thong and Ban Rom Fa Thai, and camping is also available very close to summit. The park does provide for some basic facilities such as restrooms and running water, but bring your own gear for that truly sublime outdoor experience with just the moon and stars, and the early-morning sea of mist, about a 1.8 kilometer hike away from the Phu Chi Fa peak. So be sure to visit beautiful Phu Chi Fa, and get higher than the clouds!

sam’s steaks and grill words: Dionysus
I
have often wondered what happened to the art of dining out.
In times past going out to a restaurant was something usually reserved for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. People would put on their best clothes and then all concerned would make their way to a place that was dedicated to ensuring that their experience that evening was one that they would not forget. This was called “dining out”. Now it seems that the sole intent of most of us is to eat as fast as possible rather than to savour the flavours of the produce and the skill of the people preparing them.
56
Thank heavens then for Sam’s Steaks and Grill at the Holiday Inn, Patong, Phuket. This oasis of dining sanity in an ocean of fast food and quick turnaround is an unexpected find in an area more known for its hedonistic opportunities rather than its culinary offerings. Its subtle layout allows each table to have its own sense of privacy making it perfect for that romantic dinner or for larger tables when you want to celebrate with friends or family or opt for the private dining room. Sam’s takes the concept of Dining Out very seriously from when you make your reservations, and it is
recommended you do as Sam’s is very popular. The reservation staff makes sure that no 2 tables are seating at the same time allowing them to give you their undivided attention. As you arrive and are shown to your seats, which are high backed and perfect for a prolonged meal, you take in the atmosphere which if you are coming mid service includes an interesting aroma which you cannot place as there is no sign of the kitchen. My host for the evening, Holiday Inn EAM Morgan Layberry, selected from across the menu and so one of the best dining experiences I have had for many years commenced. First to arrive were the French oysters, prepared in 3 different ways which are flown in for the hotel twice a week these. The St Kerber’s had the soft salty taste of the sea whilst the Kilpatricks with their bacon and Worcestershire sauce and the

Rockefeller with the spinach and cheese were a blend of delicate flavours. Next to arrive were the scallops and prawns and it was at this point that the theatre of Sam’s first arrived. Cooked at table, including a flambé at the end to secure the flavours, these were slightly sweet and beautifully textured. Gourmet dining is not complete without Foie Gras and the terrine that is made in-house by the chef was creamy with a beautiful gamey flavour that went well with the accoutrements. Sam’s offers other cuisines and we could not miss trying the Mahi Mahi prepared in a yellow curry sauce, the flavours of which complimented rather than overpowered the taste of the fish and the small black mussels from America added intensity to the overall taste flavour. A lamb rack from New Zealand served with a BBQ sauce, perfectly cooked to medium rare had the flavours just jumping out at you. Four very good sized cutlets made up the rack with lots of meat on each, something you do not always see in other establishments with 3 or even 2 cutlets being the norm.
Morgan had left the best to last when the Chateaubriand was served. Theatre time again as the meat was carved professionally at the table with the aromas permeating the room. Cooked to perfection, rare, the meat was so delicate it hardly needed a knife to cut it. We chose the garlic potato gratin and blue cheese sauce prepared with Gorgonzola to compliment the steak beautifully. Theatre time again for dessert when we chose Crepes Suzette prepared and flambéed at the table. It was at this point that we realised that we were often the centre of attention for others in the room who were taking in the show. Morgan told us that many guests seeing the different dishes being prepared at table decide to come back for a second meal, especially on their last night. The final theatre of the night was the Irish Coffee, experience that I have never had before and one you should not miss. Your waitress comes to your table with the makings of an Irish Coffee and dexterously moves glasses with lit alcohol in a mini fire show before culminating in pouring lit
alcohol from a great height in to your glass of coffee. In 2013 Sam’s was voted by Trip Advisor customers as being #1 Fine Dining Restaurant in Thailand. Morgan pointed out that whilst extremely pleased for their staff to win such an award Sam’s did not consider itself to be a Fine Dining restaurant but rather a steakhouse that does things others do not do. They may not be a Fine Dining restaurant in the strictest sense but they do offer an extremely fine dining experience. Absolute Thai Magazine would like the first 20 people an opportunity to try Sam’s for yourself and invite you to visit www.tastevouchers.com/ absolutemagazine to receive a complimentary voucher for 20% off your total bill.

ention beach clubs to anyone and the image of lounging by the beach or poolside in the hot sun or of young nubile people playing volleyball, windsurfing or other such sports comes immediately to mind. So to is a recollection of often overpriced drinks and substandard quality food. Phuket has been fortunate as its first real beach club, Catch at Surin Beach, set the standards of quality that others have tried to emulate over the years. Latest to join the growing number of beach clubs in Phuket is Bimi, also in Surin and it will come as no surprise when you see the quality that it is a sister to Catch.
58
Divided cleverly in to 2 sections by the beach access path Bimi caters for those that wish to party and have fun on the sand with those that want a more tranquil time in the comfortable restaurant. Its relaxed dress code is more likely to have people barefoot and in bikinis dancing on the sand throughout the day, which has its own curtain shower to cool you down, rather than the high heel and cocktail dresses that are often found at Catch. Even the waitresses are dressed in Bimi T-Shirts and sarongs to set the scene and to keep the party atmosphere going. Snack size food is available from 11.00 on the beachside whilst the main restaurant has day time and evening
menus. If you want something a little different ask for the longtail boat embedded in the sand which makes for a semi private dining area ideal for small celebrations or parties. We opted to dine in the evening to take advantage of the grill menu starting at 19.00 until 22.00 with the restaurant’s specialities. We left the choice of food and wine to the restaurant manager Khun Air being the best person to know what is freshest and best and to also give us a surprise.
First up was Bimi’s “WOW” Seafood Platter and WOW is definitely the word as it comes with Slipper Lobster, Oysters, Mussels, Crab, Prawns, Seared Tuna all on a bed of ice and served with 6 accoutrements. These were pleasant but to be honest the platter was so fresh and flavoursome that we ignored them most of the time and enjoyed the natural flavours of the seafood. We had this as a starter but it could just as easily been a main course for 2 or more. Bimi’s signature items are its grills and Phuket’s largest grill is set right in the middle of the restaurant where the chef prepares your steaks and other grilled meats or fish right before you. This is great theatre and a talking point whilst you are waiting for it to be cooked, all the time with the aromas wafting across the restaurant and tantalizing the taste buds. Steaks were next on the menu, one of us having the rib eye and the other strip loin, both of which were cooked to perfection. You can have a choice of rice or baked potato with your main course and we had potato as I am not ready yet to have rice with steak even if this is Asia. Again there is a choice of 6 sauces and Khun Air selected the
mushroom and béarnaise sauces for us to try, the latter of which is one of the best I have had in Phuket.

Fresh from Australia and grain fed the steaks were a perfect example of how simple food prepared correctly can be as enjoyable as an exotic dish full of various flavours. Natural flavours being allowed to shine! All through the meal Cafe Del Mar style music was being played in the beach area opposite but at a level that was not obtrusive to the diners but loud enough for the party crowd to carry on enjoying themselves. Dessert I confess is one of my weaknesses when it comes to dining out and I have a particular liking for Crepe Suzettes. To my delight this was one of the desserts available and I took little time in placing an order. The crepes were not too thick as can often be the case whilst the sauce was tangy and orangey with an almost burnt caramel flavour – perfect. I can see how you can easily spend the whole day at Bimi from breakfast right until closing time at 11pm when you make your way down the beach a little to join the more gentile crowd at Catch Beach Club.

Bimi definitely attracts the younger crowd and this is a deliberate and sensible move to compliment Catch Beach Club. Prices are lower at Bimi but the quality of service is of a level that you expect to find in its parent hotel Twinpalms.

or a special evening, my wife and I were looking for something different from the usual restaurants in the mall routine. So after much deliberation, and as madam likes seafood and al fresco dining, we settled on Breezeo, one of the multitudes of restaurants offered by the world famous, award winning Royal Cliff Beach Hotel.

Breezeo reminded me of long ago trips to the Caribbean, where beachside restaurants are considered the norm, but here in Pattaya, it’s quite unique. Sitting within touching distance of the blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand, this has got to be the most romantic setting around. With a palm fringed beach and stunning views over the delightful tropical
island of Koh Larn this makes Breezeo stand out from the rest. But the icing on the cake is the stunning sunset, with the sun dropping behind the island and the twinkling lights lighting up in the distance, it makes as a photographer’s dream. On arrival at Breezeo, we were warmly greeted by the highly
efficient and attentive staff. Shown to our sea front table, it was time to ponder the impressive menu. We both settled for the delightful set menu that was on offer. For the starter plate, we were presented with som tam ponlamai which translated is Thai fruit spicy salad, served with roasted peanuts and coconut. This came piled high in the bowl, with a mouthwatering array of local fruits and just enough spices to tickle the palette of anticipation of what was to come for the next course. Blackened salmon steak, served with, salad, Szechuan fried rice and chili jam. This arrived like a piece of art, with the salmon cooked just the way you would expect, the Szechuan rice came in its own bowl, made of sliced zucchini, which looked just too good to eat. Dessert
consisted of a banana crumble tart with homemade yoghurt ice cream which literally melted in your mouth. All the way through this great culinary experience we were approached by head chef, Walter Thenish the 32 year veteran chef of the Royal Cliff Group, to discreetly ensure that everything was to our satisfaction. Breezeo’s signature is ‘Be Yourself Dining’ this means it is entirely up to you, what you eat and drink. With an enormous abundance of seafood around these local waters it is no wonder the remarkable array on offer, you pick whatever you like from the ‘wet buffet’ and the highly skilled chefs will whisk it away and BBQ it to perfection. ‘Be Yourself Dining’ is also the theme for a unique concept on cocktails.
You will be presented with your very own ‘Cocktail Order Form’, being an expert or beginner it doesn’t matter here, at Breezeo the process is fun and simple, you simply fill out the form with your favourite alcohol or fruit juice right through to the glassware. Once finished, pass to your bartender who will prepare it for you. An especially nice touch if your cocktail surpasses expectations from the expert makers, you have the chance to have your cocktail emblazoned on their very own wall of fame. This was a very special night for us, so we were delighted with the professional attitude of the staff and the amazing culinary experience delivered to us. What will live with us for many years to come was the amazing views and incredible sunset.

BANYAN TREE, BANGKOK
saffron
FLYING HIGH IN THE CITY OF ANGELS words: Paul Eastland
I
t was with great pleasure that I was given the opportunity to sample the delights of this legendary, award winning establishment. Conveniently situated in the Central business district, Banyan Tree towers over its rivals not just in size, but service alike. Saffron is the signature Thai restaurant of the Banyan Tree Hotels and Resort group, serving up incredible dishes worldwide.
62
Located on the 52nd floor of this colossal hotel Saffron, boasts spectacular views over this metropolitan city. Serving an incredible array of innovative Thai cuisine, making this a must for anyone seeking the ultimate in the fine dining experience. After being transported up in the high speed lift, we were welcomed by the graceful attentive staff who pulled out
all the stops to make our experience one that we will never forget, starting with a traditional Thai hand washing ceremony, which was just the beginning. Luckily for us Chef Renu, the highly skilled master chef who is directly responsible and the mastermind behind the Saffron Signature restaurants worldwide, was present for our visit. Explaining that her goal is to create a menu, through her own innovative ways, using only the finest ingredients, including some of her own (secret) ones that she would never divulge, and boy has she achieved that. Nothing was too much trouble, and mentioning that my favourite Thai dish was Nam Prik Ong, a delightful Northern dish comprising of ground pork and tomatoes with a delectable array of
spices, within 10 minutes this was served as a starter accompanied with saffron crackers and rice cakes, which complimented each other to perfection, as did Madam’s Saffron marinated chicken with Chef Renus specialty exotic salad piled high above. Eagerly moving on to the main course, we were spoilt for choice, eventually opting for two familiar Thai favourites Tom Yam Goong which is the traditional spicy prawn soup, with lemongrass, cherry tomatoes and galangal which arrived in separate clay pots for each of us, nothing can distract from the view that this was created using only the finest, freshest ingredients, the taste was exquisite. Madam’s choice was Massaman Nua, a southern style braised beef curry with chestnuts and lotus seeds, accompanied with pickled vegetables, roti and your choice of four different kinds of rice (I tried all four); this is where Chef Renu’s
“secret“ ingredients were evident, whereas before I’d tried Massaman many times but never with chestnuts (usually with potato) and this change brought a completely different texture to the dish, with the chestnuts literally bursting and the beef simply melting in your mouth. Fantastic! For dessert we decided on Kao Niew Manmung & I-tim, which translates to mango with sticky rice served with coconut ice cream and Sakoo Bai, Toey, a Pandan tapioca pudding accompanied with ginko fruit and fresh coconut milk, which both neutralized the palate to perfection. After this I could manage no more, but Madam opted for a cappuccino coffee to round off our incredible experience. After dinner, (or before) it is a must to step outside to the sky deck, where the Latitude Lounge is situated, for post drinks, where an extensive

Because this is a highly popular, high end establishment it is advised to book your reservation in advance. Also be advised that there is a smart casual dress code observed, long trousers, closed shoes for men, for ladies no denim shorts. I have been to many high end restaurants, but Saffron stands out from the majority, not just because of location, but for the whole round experience, sublime food, atmosphere and hospitality. phuket heritage trails words: Amy Bensema
P
huket Heritage Trails is a unique tour operator that aims to promote the cultural & historical side of Phuket in a hands-on, educational manner. Founded by Phuket native Kritchaya Na Takuathung (Khun Chaya), Phuket Heritage Trails offers natural, cultural and historical experiences across the island. The tour experience is unique in that it showcases local beliefs, architecture, cuisines, and lifestyle within the historical backdrop made up of the community’s ethnic and religious diversity. The tours, accompanied by the mission statement of “Making a Difference,” are as memorable as they are educational. On a recent “Meet the Locals” tour, a small group of tourists are delighted by Khun Chaya’s fascinating explanation of the history of Phuket. The tour begins on a colorful little side street in Phuket’s Old Town district. The group is told of how Phuket’s fortune was once made on tin mining. Chinese immigrants flocked here to have a gamble in the once lucrative industry, and after the boom, many of those immigrants stayed in Phuket and set up businesses & homes in colorful shop houses that, still to this day, decorate the distinctive Thalang Road.
68
Khun Chaya emphasizes how the Chinese immigrants mixed with the island’s ethnic Thai, the Chao Lay who are better known as Sea Gypsies, and the Malays. She credits the tin mining era for mixing Phuket’s ethnic flavor. After the introduction to Phuket’s Old Town district, guests of the tour are ushered to “Baan Chinpracha” which is one of Phuket’s most precious gems. The Chinpracha House is over 100 years old, and is one of the most beautiful Sino-Portuguese mansions on the entire island. The Chinpracha House is truly one of the island’s cultural artifacts. Stepping inside the mansion is like stepping back in time. The current owners are sixth-generation descendants of the original builder, and many of the family’s antiques have been kept in tact. Original furniture, imported from China, still stands in most rooms, but it’s the family portraits that will peak your curiosity. What’s even more amazing is that Khun Chaya is able to recite the family’s history based upon each portrait on the wall. Local cuisine is next as it’s time for a lunch break. Khun Chaya is careful to ask the small group of any food

allergies, and her face lights up as she begins to explain the unique flavors that make up local Phuket cuisine. After feasting on a lunch of various soups, curries and salads, the group is off again. This time, a brief stop is made at a quiet temple with a peaceful garden. This location hosts Phuket’s only nunnery, and the group is given a quick tour of the grounds. Mid-afternoon finds the group driving through the hustle and bustle of Phuket town and onto the small island of Koh Siray. It is here that the tour enters into the tiny village of Laem Tukkae. Here, the tour meets the nomadic Chao Lay people. The Chao Lay are considered sea gypsies, and used to roam the Andaman Sea coast. About one century ago, they took up permanent settlements on the west

Despite the settlements, these people still stick to their traditional way of life. The sea gypsies are very independent and self sufficient, and the live a simple existence in harmony with nature.
Visiting this village is an eye opener for the tourists, as it gives them an insight into a group of people still close to the old ways of their ancestors. The visit to the sea gypsy village in Laem Tukkae rounds out the “Meet the Locals” tour with Phuket Heritage Trails. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek innovating on strong foundations
T
he 2014 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the first in a new decade. For many events or companies entering a new decade it is often seen as a time for change. A time for new ideas. A clear out, possibly. Not so for the organisers of Phuket Raceweek who value the event’s history, traditions and its award-winning formula of success. “We’re proud of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek’s heritage. Over the last 10 years it has grown successfully from a small local event into a world-class award-winning regatta with international renown. This history is part of the event’s DNA and we aim to build on this, not change it,” said Mr. Byron Jones, Managing Director of Media Business Services (MBS). The 2014 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek takes place off Panwa Cape on Phuket’s southeast coast,
16th – 20th July. Headquartered at Cape Panwa Hotel – the event’s title and host sponsor – the 2014 edition is already starting to boast a strong lineup of local and international entries. A new innovation this year sees the organisers take the lead in environmental stewardship by officially becoming a Clean Regatta as approved by Sailors for the Sea, the first regatta in South East Asia to become so. “Sailing is considered to be a clean and green sport, and on the whole it is. As residents of Phuket and organisers of an annual sailing event here, the team at Phuket Raceweek are aware of the importance of the sea to Phuket’s tourism and sailing industries, and we aim to ensure the marine environment is left in a better state for future generations,” explained Jones.
The Clean Regattas program is a global certification system that encourages regatta organisers and yacht clubs to manage and run environmentally responsible events. With regattas in more than 13 countries certified, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is the first in South East Asia.

The Blood of Olympus BY RICK RIORDAN hough the Greek and Roman T crewmembers of the “Argo II” have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen-all of them, and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood-the blood of Olympus-in order to wake. The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps. The Athena Parthenos will go west; the “Argo II” will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.
