A NOTE FROM THE editor

MAY 2016

hello New artists, new culture, new trends and new ideas. If, like me, you find inspiration on a restaurant napkin or in a shop window then you know you are creatively inclined! Inspiration is everywhere, whether you are creative minded or not! Here at ABSORB we collate creative inspiration and filter it for you our readers! In this launch edition of ABSORB we cover the disciplinary that is ‘photomontage’ featured within the arts & culture section, highlighting mixed media artists and showcasing a project responding to the theme ‘10 layers’. The collage has moved on since just cut and paste! This feature also extends onto our digital platform ABSORB digital where we delve into the moving image! New to the city? We have your weekends sorted! From free art exhibitions to attend to undiscovered parks to escape the hustle and bustle that is the rat race! This is a personal collation of some of my very favourite places in the Capital - and so please only take your favourite friend - these places can not become the new tourist spots of 2016!

twitter@katymcconville

Elsewhere in this visionary issue, we explore into all the details that is trend forecasting! We wanted to keep ABSORB relatable to it’s readers and so only high street brands are featured - making that decision to buy ‘just another black dress’ more justified! I have carefully selected the latest trends and how you can transition from summer to winter with only the slightest of changes! London creative Ed Shrewsbury welcomes us into his journey of becoming Topshop’s art director and I also get to chat with Mark Small finding out what life was like straight after graduating. The world needs new ideas so let’s get out there and do something new! From having your own unique photography style or visiting that exhibition nobody else wants to go to - do it anyway and inspire the uninspired! ABSORB your surroundings. #absorbmag

We followed Ellis - ABSORB’S photographer around on a shoot to see what they really get up to! With direction in sight, the model and the photographer usually have the outfits on site, and then travel about looking for the perfect locations - as we say at ABSORB; inspiration is all around you. These photographs went towards the ‘10 layers’ photomontage project. A huge thank you to Eloisa for being a fab model as well! Boris Peianov

Borris was born and raised between Romania and Serbia, brought up in an artsy environment, and went on to study Architecture and Conceptual Art. Currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He states: ‘I tend to be minimal, but I drift from that very often, my work often ends up being eclectic, spontaneous, raw even. Honest. I tend to produce relatable work, which is why I favour the use of typography.’ All images and content used are collected from the artist’s personal website.

Gus & Stella You may have stumbled upon this creative duo in 2013 when Topshop’s creative director Kate Phelan commissioned them to take over the art direction, photography and film of the autumn/winter In-Store magazine titles ‘maison stella’. We’ve dedicated the next three pages entirely on what they are doing now. From their Topshop success, they have gone on to collaborate with rather a few top publications such as Teen Vogue US, Elle France, Glamour Germany and brands like Chanel & Libery to name a few. All images used are sources from the artists’ personal websites.

Born and bred in Belgium and spending most of their time collaborating in The School of Arts in Ghent they became a duo in life and work. Upon graduation in 2010 they decided to move to London and work as freelance photographic assistants whilst continuing to work on their own projects. Gus & Stella’s approach to photography and film is rooted in the playful observation of everyday life. These authentic moments reoccur in their commercial work.

JesseDraxler

Draxler is now based in Minneapolis and started collaging seven years ago. His impressive portfolio is made by hand and are all weirdly sexual, visually challenging and teeter between aesthetically pleasing and disturbing. All images used are sources from the artist’s personal website.

79

We featured Draxler because we loved his use of free hand painting over fashion photography. This abstract feel creates mood and curiosity. We love his cut up portraits - and also the fact he works in black and white!

LOUISE MERTENS Louise has been making collages since she was young, making it such a trademark of herself. She admires the sophisticated quality of Japanese art. She has always been inspired by the female body, the mysterious and the incomprehensible. There is a simplicity in the contours, in the minimalism of the lines, in its eye for detail. “The subtle but important details force you to look with more patience,” She says. “and patience is really important in my work.” She likes to step into dialogue with fashion images through hiding and altering parts of her characters. Manipulation in his purest form.

free exhibitionsLONDON Conceptual Art Once it was healthier to drink gin rather than the water in London. Thankfully – or not – those days are long gone, but the act, or should that be the art of drinking, remains a constant source of creative inspiration. This BP spotlight display curated by David Blayney Brown, who curated last year’s phenomenal Late Turner show, charts Britain’s relationship with alcohol from George Cruikshank’s temperance-themed ‘Worship of Bacchus’ to Gilbert & George’s ‘Drinking Sculpture’. Ignore the somewhat dry title of this survey of British art. Taking in the period of Harold Wilson’s Labour government and the election of Margaret Thatcher, there’s plenty of switched-on politically-motivated (and often angry) work on offer by artists who, thinking beyond the limits of conventional art, used text and photography to pose questions about the world around them. The show features undersung and highly influential figures including Art & Language, Victor Burgin, Bruce McLean and Stephen Willats, all of whose work strikes a chord with that of socially-minded recent Turner Prize winners Assemble. You’ll also see early experiments in feminist art in the work of Mary Kelly and land art in Richard Long’s outdoor experiments. Keith Arnatt, meanwhile, brings a dose of knockabout British humour in works such as his self-explanatory ‘Self-Burial (Television Interference Project)’ (1969). Timeout London

Paul Strand: Photography and Film for the 20th Century

Goodness: It’s a quality you probably appreciate in your mum. But in an artist? We’re taught from an early age to admire art’s bad boys and girls, from Caravaggio via Picasso to Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. They have the coolest lives and make the best copy. But the photographer Paul Strand (1890-1976) was, unerringly, a good man. And his images, of New York City streets, remote rural communities, even crocuses in his back yard, are inseparable from his humanity. Timeout London

You’ll recognise it immediately. Revolving in a room of its own, Mark Wallinger’s ‘Superego’ is a dead ringer for the New Scotland Yard sign. Wallinger has stripped the triangular form of words and mirrored it so that, spinning above your head, it reflects fragments of the gallery in an endless cubist dance. It’s mesmerising but also a little terrifying – too high to allow you to catch a glimpse of yourself, it feels aloof, imposing and alienating. Timeout London Like the Met itself, you might say, or glitzy contemporary art. Timeout London 109

STATES OF MIND: tracing the edges of consciousness This exhibition follows on from the first instalment of States of Mind which saw artist Ann Veronica Janssens fill a room with beautiful multicoloured mist which visitors queued for hours to get enveloped in. Enlisting the help of artists, philosophers, neuroscientists and psychologists, the second part of the programme, Tracing the Edges of Consciousness unpicks the awareness of one’s existence through a series of changing installations exploring synaesthesia, disorders of memory, somnambulism and what happens when conscious experience is interrupted. Alison Britton is one of the leading ceramic artists of her generation. She rose to prominence in the 1970s as part of a loosely affiliated group of women potters who had trained at the Royal College of Art, and whose work challenged established traditions. Brittons ceramics took function and ornamentation as subjects to explore rather than qualities to necessarily directly exhibit, an approach to making that shifted the agenda for craft practice. COLOUR TREND

A minimal palette of both neutral and warm tones emerges as a directional take for this spare yet complex trend. Colour is worn in head-to-toe ensembles for a dramatic effect, or in diverse opposing hues in structured silhouettes creating a sharp and modern edge. These unusual tones add a sophisticated vibe to the summer season. 137 Image reference from WGSN and Pinterest.

HIGH STREET TOP PICKS

As we know catwalk collections are out of stretch for most of our pockets and so we thought we would put together a high street collection that represents the forthcoming trend for spring/summer 2016 that is Simplexity. To be even more shopping savvy - we have created looks you can transition easily from spring/summer to autumn/winter with the smallest of changes and of course - still be on trend!

Zara have seen this trend and used it to the best of their ability! It really outlines their style as a brand. Add a tied bomber for that edgy feel.

spring/summer TOPSHOP

This dress is perfect for spring and relates to the trend with its drop down structure, monochromatic stripes and has Issey Mayaki accents.

Folds, structure and form are all accents that make up the trend that is Simplexity. This Zara dress is perfect for a summer day at work, evening drinks or a sunday exploring. Versatility is key to savvy shopping so pick garments that work for different looks. Opposite are Zara’s loose white pants - a necessity we feel for British summers! Relating to Gabriele Colangelo catalk looks, pair with an oversized white jacket for the Simplexity look.

Bold silhouettes are adorned with intricate embroideries while materials are alive with rich vivacious colour and high-shine metallics. Square shouldered jackets and coats emphasise this powerful trend. - W G S N

A palette of saturated brights highlighted with the luxury of silver and gold metallics emphasises the more-is-more theme, an eccentric Maximalism. Bold colours are used in juxtaposing combinations for bold and creative looks while these hothouse hues are also worn in head-to-toe layers, bringing added vibrancy to silhouettes. Yet it’s the risqué singer’s 78 of ‘The Blues Ain’t Nothin’ But…’ that’s been given pride of place facing a cabin-like bar counter where pints of Adnams Bitter and Broadside, as well as Bitburger, Murphy’s and Mad Goose Purity are dispensed and duly taken back to a saloon-style back room accommodating the seating. That’s where the live music takes place most nights of the week, performed by tail-shakers happy to have a residency and equal acclaim from tourists and local enthusiasts. The staircase down to the toilets is decorated with caricatures of great names in blues and wider genres (the one of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is a work of art). A great fit for the area’s relaxed, thirtysomething inhabitants, First Aid Box’s white tiled walls, shelves of pseudo-pharmacological gear and menu with a medicinal theme suggest the snap of a latex glove, but it’s a concept of charming staff, upbeat music and flattering, flickering candlelight. But the most inspired thing about this place is that when the morning after the night before arrives, you can head straight back for a shot in the arm in the form of coffees, pastries, sangas and well-executed, modish small plates. This time it’ll be in the company of local mums-with-babes, groups preparing to take a spin around Brockwell Park and hungover friends self-administering hair of the dog. So open wide and say Aah! Falling into the tourists traps is quite easy, especially close to the main attractions like the Grand Canal. Here are a few bullet points to get you through your visit: - Visit in the off season - Choose a family run B&B or rent a short-term apartment (Air B&B). - Explore the real Venice‌ by foot. - Gondolas are a once-in-a-liftime experience‌ but be careful! - For great meals, step away from the popular piazzas Look for Local Souvenirs Walks of Italy To save booking an extra nights accommodation download the rail planner app to book night trains getting you to your next destination. Gondolas are synonymous with Venice. Some might say that no trip is complete without a ride in the ubiquitous boats. However, as a photographer, I’d much rather photograph them from a distance. Gondoliers wear their distinctive and traditional hats and shirts and know they are the constant subject of photographers. This fellow hung about for some time, very conscious of the constant clicking and enjoyed the attention. Gondoliers have their website that explains their official rates. Find rates at : GondolaVenezia.it It’s not cheap, by any means. Prices are approximately 80 Euros for a 40 minute ride for up to 6 persons. And that’s during the daytime. At night, rates rise to 100 Euros for a 40 minute ride. If you have your heart set on a romantic ride for two, that’s the rate you’ll pay. But if you hang about the popular spots where rides commence, you’ll find fellow travellers looking for others to share the cost of the ride. Don’t be surprised if Gondoliers ask for more than these noted rates. So, settle on the price and length of the ride at the outset. Also, check the time of the start of your ride. Why? Gondoliers’ watches can run suspiciously fast! Pa n T h e O n P h o t o s

ABSORB’s editor has recently had the trip of a lifetime and visited the country of Thailand. We hear this country on some many people’s wish lists and travel plans but we want to know if the hype is real. I have just had the amazing opportunity to travel and experience Thailand. We flew into Bangkok and then had a small coach ride to the city of Pattaya. Whilst here we visited temples, The Sanctuary of Truth, experienced the night life and took a boat trip visiting local islands. This was a fantastic week which temperatures reaching 35 degrees - not weather for laying around sunbathing. In the picture opposite, we went for sunset drinks at the Hilton Hotel on the beach front in Pattaya. The cocktails were out of this world and the views - well you can judge them for yourself. It felt like luxury! It was so nice we went back twice! I definitely recommend visiting here - the drinks prices in comparison to British Stirling is crazy! 360 Thai Baht for a cocktail is the equivalent to £7. If this was in London you wouldn’t be getting change from a £20 note! After spending a week here, we took an internal flight south - to the city of Krabi. I must say, upon arrival this was more of what I expected Thailand to look like. Sheer cliff ’s and farm land. Here we spent another week in the Vogue Resort Hotel & Spa. My favourite part was another boat trip where you can get the chance to snorkel and see all different types of coral and fish. Don’t forget to invest in a GoPro - this was my must have of the entire holiday!

Travelling in a long boat has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I couldn’t believe the white beaches and clear waters. Railey beach was the closest beach to travel to by long boat from the main beach in Krabi. They were very cheap and very often. Once arrived on Railey beach you could participate in activities such as kayaking or paddle boarding, and even rock climbing if your feeling brave! There is a ‘walking street’ where you can shop for souvenirs or food. I recommend the fruit smoothers! In that heat you need all the beverages! I definitely would refer a friend to visit here and the people are right about the hype - it truly is an amazing country!

TRAV EL Where to stay? This is the big question. If you are travelling, the hostels really can not be faulted. Besides the lack of air con - for what you pay and the service it’s outstanding! Book with a trusted airline, and travel by coach to nearby places. Book a week in advance to your next location and you can change the amount of days your staying if they have room for you! I love taking holiday photos, and so before I travel - I always have a good haul on Pinterest and travel blogs for photography inspiration. You don’t know what your missing out on! I collected some fab photo’s whilst mid-flight and upon landing. Head over to my personal Instagram account for my updates. @katybm94

In Krabi we had the amazing opportunity to experience Thai New Year named Songkran. This is a water festival where the streets are crammed with pick up trucks filled water tanks and super soaker’s! We joined a local hostel party at The Slumber Party Hostel where they provided a hose pipe so we could fill up our water guns! The atmosphere was incredible and not a person in sight was dry! The locals would jump off their trucks and paint your faces with a talcum power mix and power die. I would say a necessity for this event would be a water proof bag/phone pouch - as you really do get drenched! Imagine a tub of ice water literally thrown over your head! NO IPHONE IS SAFE!

267

If you wanted more of a crazy party then head into Bangkok for Songkran. This goes on for a week and the streets are completely shut down and crammed with locals and tourists - I need to repeat this is not for the faint hearted, it, is, crazy! If you are staying in Bankgkok I would say to take a small boat on the canal and book a route taking you down the small water streets. This was a very eye opening experience seeing houses on stilts just centimetres off the water. Whilst on the canal we saw water snakes and lizards - very cool to see in the wild! We also saw people feeding fish from the temples - there were thousands! Thousands! It was interesting to see the high rise buildings sat right next to such run down housing! This is the true Bangkok, it is very mixed together!

Music aside, what many don’t consider about Coachella is just how beautiful the festival is. Over 17 years, the organizers have honed their craft at throwing a singular party, and everywhere you look while bouncing from stage to stage is a stunning piece of art or the area’s natural landscape. At night, the palm trees light up in reds, blues, and greens while illuminated balloons fly into the sky. Coachella, for a couple weekends each year, manages to develop its own universe, and while many other festivals attempt such a feat, the amount that actually achieve such a spectacle is a rarity. - Consequence of Sound

INTRODUCING

HE ’ S IN FASHION Ever wondered how an Art Director actually got their j o b ? ? We f e e l g r a p h i c d e s i g n j o b s i n t h e f a s h i o n industry are hidden behind closed doors and untalked about. Here at Absorb we have done the hard work f o r y o u a n d h a v e c h a t t e d t o To p s h o p ’ s v e r y o w n A r t D i r e c t o r E d S h r e w s b u r y ! H e l e t ’s u s i n o n h i s c r e a t i v e journey so far and we find out how those dreaded internships really work!

We c h a t w i t h E d Where it all began - did you study at University? What is your brief journey to how you got to where you are now, landing you your career? (state job title): I studied Graphic Design at Manchester School of Art so very relevant to what I am doing now. In my third year I got an internship at Esquire which I had to do in London whilst doing uni work alongside it. The day after my last hand in I moved to London and start-

ed an internship as a Digital Designer for Conde Nast. which then lead onto a Design internship at British Vogue, I was there for roughly two months and then I was offered a full time job as a Digital Designer for Topshop which I took and am working as now. How did you find funding the internships? I funded my internships by working part time, saving up money and just crashing on friends sofas in London rather than paying full rent.

284

Most internships won’t pay you anything so when your in London you need to be extremely financially planned and organised. If you could go back to any stage during your life, would you do anything differently? Yeah, I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry A levels but if I could I back in time I would do an Art and Design BTEC. I wouldn’t change a thing from my Art Foundation or degree though.

A B S O R B Th e Vi s i o n a r y Is s u e 2 0 1 6

Do you have an online portfolio? And do you think this is essential for a job interview? An online portfolio/website is very important yes, it really separates you from student to professional. Mine is www.edshrew.co.uk

The dreaded interview - any horror stories you feel we should be prepared for? I think everyone prepares for nervous situations in different ways. Whenever I try and plan a speech out I stumble and get nervous but if I go in relaxed and have confidence in my ability to improvise on the spot then I am okay.

“Just Be Yourself”

I would recommend going through your portfolio how you want to show it an interview (make sure you start with a good project and end with a good project) and take notes on points, concepts and your working thought process on them as that is what the interviewer will want to here. Whoever is interviewing you already knows you’re a good designer as they’ve seen your work and invited you in, what they want to know through the interview is can they spend 8 hours a day with you. Are you going to get on with them? And are you enthusiastic for the job and bring ideas to the table? There things to think about before an interview but there is no need to get yourself worked up and nervous because they always end up being a lot more relaxed than you think (just be yourself).

My favourite studios are Wednesday, Jonny Lu and Li inc, they all produce work that blows my mind. Is there any other creative areas you feel you would like to expand to? I would like to explore video direction, it’s never something I ever experimented with at uni because not knowing the software at the time really intimidated me. We c h a t w i t h F l i c k Where it all began - did you study at University? What is your brief journey to how you got to where you are now, landing you your career? (state job title): I studied Fashion illustration at London College of Fashion (LCF). After graduating I picked up freelance bits until I gained full time employment at a graphics supplier company. From there I worked my way to jobs at ASOS and, now, Topman. If you could go back to any

stage during your life, would you do anything differently? I would have liked to have travelled more when I was younger. Have you done any work experience/interning? If so, where at and how did you manage to achieve these internships? (sourcing contacts). I interned at Alexander McQueen on the womenswear print team. It was a great experience but it was very hard work and really long hours. it did give me invaluable insight into the industry though and I did learn

288

a lot. If you said yes to the previous question, how did you find funding the internships? Very difficult. I still had some of my student loan left and I also worked in a pub to pay my way a bit. It was exhausting! Do you have an online portfolio? And do you think this is essential for a job interview? I do have a website for my work, yes. I do feel that this is essential for job interviews and even applying for jobs. It looks more..

professional and proves that you’re serious about what you do. The dreaded interview - any horror stories you feel we should be prepared for? Ha! Interviews are always a strange social situation. I am lucky enough not to have any horror stories! My advice would be to include work in your folio that you like and like talking about. Also, try your best to get your personality across. So many times I have hired or seen people be hired that weren’t necessarily the most talented candidate for the job but had amazing personalities. Have you ever ‘enhanced your skills’ to accommodate the job application? If yes has this backfired during the job role? Not really. Who is your favourite creative? Whether it be a graphic designer/ illustrator/filmographer? Ah, thats a totally unanswerable question! There are too many people that I find inspiring to mention!

Is there any other creative areas you feel you would like to expand to? I would like to do more photography. What work / position are you most proud of? Every position I’ve had has had its worth in a way and I’ve learnt something from each of them. I’m proud of my position at Topman because I get to work on the Topman Design Catwalk shows, which are really fun. In terms of work I’m proud of, that changes all the time! I’ve just made some printed bags that I really like and hope to make more in the future.

We c h a t w i t h M a r k Where it all began - did you study at University? What is your brief journey to how you got to where you are now, landing you your career? (state job title): After college I knew I wanted to do an arts based course but I was unsure of my direction. In the last couple of months of college my art took on an underlying fashion theme throughout, and when applying to University I looked for a place where i could develop this. I then turned to Southampton Solent where I

found Fashion Graphics - a course which seemed to mix everything I loved together. I didn’t just want to be a photographer or just a graphic designer, I wanted to do it all and this course allowed me to do it. After graduating a friend who used to work for a fashion photographer suggested me as a good candidate for the new role available and soon I was travelling to New York, Paris, Milan and of course London to work during the fashion seasons. It was one huge

294

roller coaster and it was extremely demanding during the season. I made a conscious decision to work for 2 years there as that’s a great time to spend somewhere. After that time was up I saw an ad on LinkedIn for a retoucher at ASOS and applied! I took the only position they could offer at the time which was a freelance retoucher, which soon turned into a 6 month contract, then 3 months into that a full time position as junior, and now I’m what we call a ‘middleweight’ retoucher.

If you could go back to any stage during your life, would you do anything differently? I always think it’s important to look back on your life and reflect on the things that made you into the person you are today, but never have regrets about anything you do. I wouldn’t want to change anything because every decision I have ever made, however little or how small, have put me onto this path, and so far I’m loving the scenery, I mean, how many people can say they’ve watched a Chanel or Alexander McQueen show!

Have you done any work experience/interning? If so, where at and how did you manage to achieve these internships? (sourcing contacts). I did do one internship and I found this when the editor came into university to give a lecture. It was an... interesting experience, lets say that, and I was spending money left right and center. Was it worth it? Who knows, maybe that helped me get the job I have today. It was valuable in the fact I learnt how casual the fashion industry is. My ideas of magazine offices in large white massive buildings was soon destroyed, I wasn’t totally clueless, but when I dropped off a Stella McCartney dress at a certain leading fashion magazine, well lets just say 5 people in a tiny room was not what I had expected! If you said yes to the previous question, how did you find funding the internships? I funded this internship with money I had saved from part time jobs that I had throughout my life. Some of the money was probably giving to me from relatives for birthdays and other occasions. I’ve never been the sort of person to spend money as soon as I get it, and to this day I never understand people who do. I have a figure in my head, and if I ever go below that I know I need to re-asses my spendings.

295

Do you have an online portfolio? And do you think this is essential for a job interview? I did have an online portfolio. I still wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to take so I included a real mixture. It was on my personal blog which I actually set up during university for one of the projects we had to do! Was it needed? I’ll never know, who knows if they did actually look at it when I submitted my application. I did however download all these images and include them on my iPad which I used during my interview at ASOS. The dreaded interview - any horror stories you feel we should be prepared for? My internship interview made me feel like I had no idea what I was doing. Names were being thrown around and because I hadn’t heard of them I felt like they were looking down at me the whole time. When I had my interview to work during fashion season my CV wasn’t even looked at! I casually explained what was on it - that interview was more grasping what I was like as a person - which is essential because at the end of the day many skills can be taught, but people skills not so much.

“How many people can say they’ve watched a Chanel show?!”

Have you ever ‘enhanced your skills’ to accommodate the job application? If yes has this backfired during the job role? I’ve never felt the need to lie on CV, who knows, maybe I should have! I live my life by using the assets I have and I apply this to my CV. Every bit of experience is great. I once had an image published of me (a self portrait that I shot with a makeup look) in a national newspaper - a small article, but it also technically means I’ve been published in there! It’s not wise to lie on a CV, but I don’t have anything against cutting out some information from facts! Who is your favourite creative? Whether it be a graphic designer/illustrator/filmographer? Aesthetically my love for the arts started with fashion designers, Gareth Pugh, McQueen, Chanel, the attention to detail and themes that they conveyed through the fashion and their runway was so inspiring, and still is to me. A graphic designer I love is Neville Brody and I love his work because it’s similar to my own style and he really plays around with text in a fun way. My mind and favourites flicker so quickly that there isn’t just one person who is my all time favourite. I admire hard work, vision and passion, so really I have many favourites, just not one in particular.

297

Is there any other creative areas you feel you would like to expand to? When I had my interview for University the lecturer initially said I would be better suited for fashion design, and who knows maybe I was! I would have loved to learn more about design and sewing, I was the best in my class in secondary school but I never took it up for GCSE because well, I guess you could call it peer pressure. I was living in a bubble in Sussex, boys just didn’t do textiles, that was for girls, and so was dance, another thing I would have loved to have studied. What work / position are you most proud of? I had the opportunity to photograph the front row at a Chanel show so being less than a meter quite literally from Keira Knightly and Rhianna to name a few was a very out of my body moment. I’m most proudest of where my journey is going. For example I started a blog for a project at University called ‘Vanity Nightmare’ and I started creating makeup looks for it. I then continued to make random looks every so often - which I even used as examples in my portfolio for my job at ASOS. The blog then turned into a fashion diary when I was travelling around the world, and now it’s taking a side bench, and I’ve used the name for Drag! - Yes I am a Drag Queen on the side. It’s important to have your own creative projects going on while working anywhere and you never know where the next project may lead or who’s watching.

We c h a t w i t h Va l Where it all began - did you study at University? What is your brief journey to how you got to where you are now, landing you your career? (state job title): I studied to become a Fashion Designer at Palermo University (Buenos Aires, Argentina). I’ve also studied Fashion Styling as a short course because it wasn’t available as a full university degree. That was 10 years ago, back then there were jobs related to my career but, it was really difficult to find people to work

with and even harder to work in the industry because the fashion scene was very small. Back then social media didn’t exist. .. haha (not joking). Today social media is a great tool to start networking and expand your circles. So I finished my studies and started working thinking of a great future without knowing really where and what I was going to do. I started working in retail making some great contacts, and finally working as a Location Manager, making even more contacts with

299

people in the Industry, such as photographers, directors, etc. It was there where I started working in Art Direction and Styling. Two years ago I’ve moved to London to take my profession to another level, and also opened up my experimental Fashion Photography Studio in East London. If you could go back to any stage during your life, would you do anything differently ? Everything that happened to me is a reflection of how I lived my life. I would have probably loved to be...

WHO IS VALERIA SIMANTOB “Your portfolio speaks about you and how you are” more direct with some people or to resolve some things in a different way, but I always followed my instincts, my inner voice and try to do everything I thought was best. Have you done any work experience/interning? If so, where at and how did you manage to achieve these internships? (sourcing contacts). No, I never made any internships. In Argentina, back in the day it wasn’t really common to make internships in Styling or Art Direction. But at the same time when I first started I was living alone, and was quite difficult to the pay bills if you didn’t have a good job so everything was down to hard work, networking and doing some side jobs while working to earn more money. Do you have an online portfolio? And do you think this is essential for a job interview? Yes I have, it is www.valesimantob.com and my company web, www.bkcn.co.uk. I think that your online portfolio is more important than your CV, I’m not saying that the CV is not important but, we are in an industry that everything is visual, and companies are interesting to see how is your visual final result than reading it. Your portfolio speaks about you and how you are. Not only because of your work, how it’s organised and how you convey the message. Presentation skills are very important and essential for a job interview, as well as recommendations.

INTRODUCING

A B S O R B Th e Vi s i o n a r y Is s u e 2 0 1 6

The dreaded interview - any horror stories you feel we should be prepared for? Definitely. When I arrived in London I sent my CV to a Great Fashion Designer, (Won’t mention any names so we don’t have any problems in the future, haha). So they called me in and I was really happy to have the interview. I stayed days and nights studying and preparing everything for the big day. I had just finished my online portfolio to show it to them on my laptop, but when I got there my computer wouldn’t turn on. So after several tries I began showing my portfolio on my mobile phone which was not very professional. The manager interviewing me was angry and had left the room, leaving me alone with the HR girl. The HR girl was embarrassed and felt sorry for me and that in the future I could re-apply for the job. So my advice to everybody is, even though we live in a Digital era and your online portfolios are be beautiful ...analogue is the way. You will never fail with print. So if you can, make a print version because you never know what is going to happen. Have you ever ‘enhanced your skills’ to accommodate the job application? If yes has this backfired during the job role? Always, it’s never enough to learn a new skill, it’s never enough to learn, because that new skill can take you to another job, person or company. I never had any problem doing this, if you are willing to learn, it’s very difficult for something to go wrong. Focus on that and put the energy to learn!!! Who is your favourite creative? Whether it be a graphic designer/illustrator/filmographer? I’m not the type of person who has favouritism, I am not fond of fanaticism over a brand or particular designer. Sometimes is not a matter who it is, is more what they do in that moment. Is there any other creative areas you feel you would like to expand to? I would like to venture into film in the near future and further down the line create my own fashion collection.

What work / position are you most proud of? Every work that I’ve done has something different, all of them gave me a new experience, a new knowledge. Now I’m concentrated making my first book and I can tell you, I’m really proud with the results so far.
