Dedicated to student success, A-B Tech delivers quality education to enhance academic, workforce, and personal development.

than any other type of higher education institution, and we reach a far more diverse group of students than traditional four-year institutions. A-B Tech is the largest college in Western North Carolina, serving more than 23,000 students a year through our curriculum, continuing education and workforce programs.

degrees, one-year diplomas, or short-term certificates in their chosen fields. A-B Tech educates the region’s workforce in healthcare, emergency services, engineering, manufacturing, culinary, hospitality, aviation, and much more.

A traditional four-year college experience isn’t for everyone, especially today when the cost of college can exceed the cost of a home. But if a bachelor’s degree is your goal, beginning at a community college is a wise choice. Completing a twoyear associate degree in A-B Tech’s college transfer program, under the Articulation Agreement, costs 75 percent less and provides quality education that guarantees transfer to any public North Carolina university.

VISION Changing Lives, Strengthening Communities

A-B Tech also offers a tremendous opportunity for high school students through our Career and College Promise (CCP) program. These students are able to take classes tuition-free and earn college credits while still in high school. Some CCP students even complete an associate degree before earning a high-school diploma - a true “win-win” for both students and their Aboutparents!halfofA-B Tech’s graduates also establish successful careers after earning two-year associate of applied sciences

BLET

A Message from the President

Last, but certainly not least, community colleges provide a welcoming, flexible and nurturing environment for our students. We understand that most of our students work full-time, have families, or often are changing careers. To help them succeed, we offer flexible scheduling, many fully online options, and a support network that includes advisers, financial aid, scholarships, career services, counseling, and other support services.

Are you exploring higher education options for yourself or your child? Let’s consider why community college may be your best option.

PresidentSincerely,

CCP Pathways

Our goal is to create a seamless process for students to earn college transfer credits, employable certifications and/or credits toward career certifications while still in high school. These opportunities are available across our service area of Asheville, Buncombe and Madison counties to high school juniors and seniors who are interested in earning college credits and getting ahead start on a four-year degree or career opportunities. Students can take classes in a variety of settings, including at their high school, online, or at one of our campus locations, and these credits can be applied to an associate degree, diploma, or certificate at A-B Tech and/or

toward a four-year degree at any public college or university in North Carolina.

This opportunity allows students to experience a rigorous high school curriculum combined with college courses throughout the program. Students simultaneously work toward completion of both the high school diploma and an associate degree in the Early and Middle College Programs. In addition, A-B Tech has partnered with Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools to create two STEM academy programs: the School of Inquiry and Life Sciences (SILSA) at Asheville High School and the Martin L. Nesbitt Jr. Discovery Academy through Buncombe County Schools. Cooperative Innovative High Schools are designed for motivated students looking for a nontraditional high school experience. These small high schools partner with A-B Tech to provide local students with a comprehensive and accessible education. We currently offer four transfer pathways (Associate of Arts, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Engineering), as well as 24 Career and Technical Education pathways, including Computer Integrated Machining (Advanced Manufacturing), Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Fire Protection, Hospitality and Tourism, Health

Allows students to begin a certification or diploma program in a particular technical field or career area.

Designed for students planning to continue their educational career beyond high school to eventually achieve an Associate or Bachelor’s degree at a community college or university.

4 abtech.edu | A-B Tech EDUCATION Journal

A-B Tech has seen an explosion in recent years of high school students enrolling in our Career and College Promise (CCP) Program, which enables students to earn free college credits while still in high school, saving students time and money in the pursuit of a college education.

CCP Dual Enrollment at A-B Tech

MJ Kunst, who was student at Nesbitt Discovery Academy, received an associate degree from A-B Tech, a month before she crossed the stage as a member of Nesbitt’s first graduating class. MJ earned an A-B Tech degree tuition-free through the Career & College Promise program. Many other Nesbitt graduates also will earn A-B Tech degrees at the end of our summer session, securing a two-year degree while still in high school.

Qualifications

Why Wait? Students Can Earn College Credit While Still in High School

To qualify for Career and College promise, students typically must be a junior or senior with a 3.0 weighted GPA at their high school. For some programs, students may need to score at a certain level on standardized tests like the ACT or SAT, or on the NCDAP local placement test. With these qualifications, motivated students can enroll in a variety of courses, including courses that transfer to all 16 UNC system schools or courses that will help prepare them for a career in a variety of fields.

• Cooperative Innovative High Schools

Offered in person and online, CCP classes give high school students a head start on college and careers. CCP benefits include tuition-free classes, credits that transfer to A-B Tech or any public N.C. public college or university, AP and honors credits, and valuable job/career skills.

Students enrolled in CCP have the opportunity to pursue their educational and career goals in three ways:

• Career-Technical Pathways

PROFESSIONS FOR PATHWAYS

• Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection Technology

• Human Services & Substance Abuse Studies

• Human Services and Youth Studies

ONLINE DEGREES

• Associate of Arts (General Pathway)

The AA (General Pathway) degree is being offered to new students as part of a strategy to create streamlined Transfer Pathways in the Division of Arts & Sciences. All credits and degrees are fully transferable to any four-year public college or university in North Carolina. Fully online certificates include:

• Fire Protection Technology For more information, visit abtech.edu/online.

Degrees earned at A-B Tech are transferrable to any four-year public college or university in North Carolina. The North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement is a statewide agreement governing the transfer of credits between N.C. community colleges and N.C. public universities.

The College Transfer Program offers different targeted pathways in areas including math, science, engineering, communication, humanities, social and behavioral sciences. For more information on pathways, visit abtech.edu/transfer. What is RDS?

The Residency Determination Service (RDS) was established in coordination with the University of North Carolina (UNC), the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA), and the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) as the centralized service for determining residency for students. This service enables a student to use one residency determination for admissions applications to multiple North Carolina public colleges and universities and to demonstrate residency for state aid programs consideration at all (public and private) North Carolina colleges and universities.

Jacob will earn his Associate in Engineering at A-B Tech, then plans to transfer to UNC Asheville for a Bachelor’s in Mechatronics. “At A-B Tech, I am getting the same education starting out as a four-year degree, but much cheaper. I did the research,” he said.

Adam is earning an Associate in Science and is also planning to transfer and pursue a Mechatronics degree. “I heard about the NASA opportunity through Phi Theta Kappa and it seemed like a perfect step,” he Adamsaid.spent four days on-site working with a team where they designed and programmed a rover to retrieve samples. “We had to do it all autonomously and it didn’t always work. The second day, we reprogrammed and we won the competition,” he said.

Jacob is on Team Glitch, which won the District and Regional Engineering Inspiration Award. They also competed on the national level in Houston. The teams are student-run, with at least 25 members for students through the 12th grade. Jacob competed as a high school student and now serves as a junior mentor. “I’m in charge of CAD and help with that as needed,” he said.

A-B Tech’s Baking and Pastry Arts program seemed a natural fit for Jamie. “I’ve always wanted to bake. I grew up learning how to cook with my grandmother, but I was getting into all the trouble,” she said.

Jamie Poteat had an incredible spring semester. She graduated with a Baking and Pastry Arts degree on May 12, got married the next day, and honeymooned in Paris the following week. The previous month, she was honored by the Buncombe County Re-Entry Council for her successful transition from prison to community.

Jamie served six years in prison and fought a drug addiction for 15 years. “To me, it is what I went through that has made stronger in my life,” she said. “All my life, I was in and out of trouble. I barely graduated from high school. Now I’ve been clean almost 10 Jamieyears.”credits the Re-Entry Council and A-B Tech with much of her success. “The council helped me a lot. They were a part of my life for two and a half years. I took my first four classes with A-B Tech instructors the year before I got out. They do a lot with helping people. The award was recognition for people that have gotten out and become self-sufficient and productive members of society,” she said.

Jamie said Chefs Christina Harley, Charles DeVries, and Brownen McCormick were supportive and made her class time at A-B Tech great. However, Chef Vince Donatelli especially made an impact. “He has been an inspiration to me on so many levels. He’s seen me grow from when I first started school. I was hard to handle when I first got out of prison with my temper,” she said. The years spent earning her degree weren’t easy, and for the first semesters, Jamie had to either ride the bus or walk to school because she couldn’t afford to get her driver’s license re-issued. “No matter what your background is and whatever you are going through, you can make it,” she said.

However, he said there has been little consistency regarding the amount of years required to pass between a legal infraction and applying for a job. “Individuals cannot wait five years, seven years, etc., before seeking gainful employment.
