2018-19 Annual President’s Report

A Farewell Message As I prepare to retire from A-B Tech, writing my final message to our A-B Tech family and the community is a bittersweet endeavor. While I look forward to spending more time with my family and traveling, my 28 years with the College were the culmination of a 45-year career in higher education and truly a labor of love.

Prior to becoming President in 2014, I was Vice President of Student Services and, at times, also an instructor Throughout my career, I have always derived the greatest fulfillment from helping students get a college education and succeed in life. Creating a welcoming culture for students is particularly important in a community college, where our students include teenagers, adults who are first-generation college students, and people in their 50s who are changing careers. Because I know how challenging it is for many of our students to afford college, it was especially meaningful to me when the A-B Tech Foundation and many friends recently established an endowed fund – the Jan and Dennis King Student Emergency Fund – to assist students who have the greatest needs.

As I look back over my years as President, there are many highlights: opening the Ferguson Center for Allied Health & Workforce Development and the A-B Tech Woodfin Emergency Services campus; launching the Barbering, Aviation, Health & Fitness Science, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Associate of Engineering programs; obtaining grants from Duke Energy to expand the Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast; renovating and restoring a number of College facilities, including the historic Ivy and Sunnicrest buildings; working with the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Coalition to recruit New Belgium Brewing and other companies to Asheville; establishing customized training programs for GE Aviation and other companies; establishing our Advanced Manufacturing Center; and more. We also adopted a four-year strategic plan, conducted a master facilities study, helped secure passage of the statewide Connect NC bond referendum, and adopted a 10-year facilities improvement plan funded primarily by the quarter-cent sales tax from Buncombe County. I also am proud of the activities that define what I refer to as “The Welcoming College” culture: working with our employees to adopt the RISE (Respect, Integrity and Support for Everyone) program, which has led to many improvements for employees and students; establishing Faculty and Staff Professional Development funds; and reinstating the Staff Association and President’s Council.

There are so many activities and people I want to thank – Board of Trustees and Foundation Board members, donors, community partners, colleagues, and employees. We are all bound by a common goal – the desire to change the lives of our students. As I prepare to leave, my hope is that our village will continue to work together to support A-B Tech and our students. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as A-B Tech’s President. I leave you with this thought: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela Sincerely,

Dennis King, President

Planting the Seeds of Agritourism The Small Business Center at A-B Tech Community College and the Madison County Cooperative Extension offered free Agritourism Short Courses to give an overview of the business. Participants learned about types of agritourism ventures, legal and risk management requirements, and discovered available agribusiness resources.

A-B Tech Early Childhood Education Program Ribbon Cutting A-B Tech’s Early Childhood Education program held a ribbon cutting for its new home in the Ferguson Center for Allied Health and Workforce Development. The Early Childhood Education program fills the gap because there are not enough qualified early childhood educators to fill employment vacancies. Classrooms are having to close as a result, leaving an even greater shortage in quality child care. A-B Tech’s Early Childhood program is involved in a number of workforce development partnerships aimed at boosting the workforce pipeline and building capacity for our early childhood workforce needs.

Radiography Department Acquires an Anatomy Visualization System A-B Tech’s Radiology Department acquired an Anatomage Table, a fully segmented real human 3D anatomy system. Users visualize anatomy exactly as they would on a person without having to dissect. The table also comes with programmable options for animals, as well. The college as able to purchase a second table for Arts and Sciences.

A-B Tech Culinary Team Unites to Earn Silver at Nationals After months of training and blood, sweat, and tears, A-B Tech’s Student Culinary Team earned a silver rating at the American Culinary Federation’s National Conference. “The students did an amazing job representing the college in a professional manner,” said A-B Tech President Dennis King. The College has sent 11 teams to compete at the national level in the contest’s 25-year history, more than any other culinary school, and won the national title in 2007. Student team members were Jamie Canton, Susan Wiley, Cheyane Verran, Abigail Coniguliaro, and team captain Brandon Kastelic. They made it to the nationals after winning first in state and regional competitions. Teams are required to create an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert, and demonstrate kitchen skills. They prepare four servings of each dish within the allotted window of time, in front of six floor judges watching them. The food then goes to five different judges who do blind tastings.

Students Beiler and Burkins named Cooke Scholarship Semifinalists A-B Tech Students Chandler Beiler and Adam Burkins were named semifinalists for the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Cooke Transfer Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others, and leadership. Students must be a currently enrolled community college student.

Scholarships Given for Short-Term Workforce Training A-B Tech received $18,000 from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation for short-term workforce training scholarships. The SECU Bridge to Careers Pilot program allowed the college award up to thirty $500 scholarships for targeted short-term workforce programs and the remaining $3,000 will go to program support. Machining Fundamentals, Industrial Maintenance Academy, Certified Production Technician, and Electronic Health Records were the courses that qualified for the scholarship program. The program was created to remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain stateregulated or industry-recognized credentials via a College-defined pathway that leads to self-sustaining wage careers within their local communities.

A-B Tech Awarded $50,000 Finish Line Grant to Assist Students A-B Tech, in partnership with the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board, was awarded a $50,000 Finish Line Grant to help students complete their training. Finish Line Grants program will assist students, who have completed 50 percent or more of their degree or credential, pay for financial emergencies they may face through no fault of their own. The North Carolina Department of Commerce, Division of the Workforce Solutions, awarded the grant. Eleven students at A-B Tech were assisted through Finish Line Grants totaling $9,285 during the first semester of implementation. Currently, food assistance represents the majority of the total requests each year and housing costs remain the largest unmet request. Kim England, Executive Assistant for Student Services, was honored for Outstanding Collaboration with the Finish Line Grant Program and the NC Works Career Center, by the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board.

Student Wins Gilman Scholarship to Study in Ecuador Sarah Hamby was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study in Ecuador with A-B Tech. The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. The Institute of International Education has administered the program since its inception in 2001. Hamby came to A-B Tech after she got her GED and found she was working harder without getting ahead. “It’s me and my mom. My dad passed away a few years ago. She and dad were not college graduates and my mom was over the moon when I got this scholarship,” she said.

Woodfin Gets New Ambulance A new ambulance was purchased for the EMS program at A-B Tech Woodfin to teach EMS driving technique. “Driving an ambulance is not all about going fast, it’s more important to deliver a smooth ride for the patient and the people standing up in the back, treating the patient,” said Clint Gorman, Dean of Emergency Services. EMS driving classes teach defensive driving, low speed maneuvering, backing, and how to deliver a quick but smooth ride.

Writing Center Dedicated to Johnson A-B Tech dedicated its Writing Center in Locke Library in honor of Lisa Johnson, the first director of the center, who retired in 2018. Johnson is shown with English Chair Heather Vaughn. “Students’ ideas were valued, their worries could be expressed, and without judgement,” Vaughn said about Johnson’s leadership when the Writing Center first opened in 2008. “Tutors offered direction and support. Students were given an opportunity to learn how to critically think, ask questions, be curious, re-work and re-write. Because of Lisa and her leadership, so many of our graduates earn their credentials.”

Historic Campus Buildings Restored A-B Tech restored two historic structures on its main campus during 2018-19. The Sunnicrest exterior restoration was funded by the 2016 Connect NC Bond Referendum and conducted by architect David E. Gall and Danforth Construction. The building houses the College’s Human Resources Department.

The Sunnicrest and Ivy buildings were restored for use by the Human Resources and College Advancement departments, respectively.

22

2018-19 Annual President’s Report

Sunnicrest is the only surviving structure of six model cottages built by George Vanderbilt just before the turn of the century in an area then known as Vernon Hill in the Township of Victoria. The cottages were designed by Richard Sharp (R.S.) Smith, supervising architect to the Biltmore Estate. The College also restored its Ivy Building, which was formerly the gymnasium and auditorium for St. Genevieve and Gibbons Hall schools. Many are familiar with the hard work former St. Genevieve’s and Gibbons Hall students, families, and supporters put into saving the schools’ last remaining building from demolition. A-B Tech President Dennis King committed to a restoration and renovation of the structure, slated to cost $1.8 million. The College dedicated $1.3 million to the project from the Connect NC bond referendum, while the Foundation developed a fundraising campaign to close the remaining funding gap of $500,000. The Foundation received a $50,000 challenge gift in support of the Ivy Building Renovation Project as a way to honor the work and leadership of former St. Genevieve/Gibbons Hall Headmaster Joseph M. Lalley. The Ivy Building contains a public space that is available to rent and offices for the College Advancement department. Learn more at abtech.edu/ivy.

Surgical Technology Program Receives Merit Award A-B Tech has received the annual merit award from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) for achieving a 100 percent pass rate on the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination. “This is a credit to the program Chair Robin Keith and Clinical Laboratory Coordinator Daniel Stokoe, who are also both superb instructors,” said Dr. Jon Wiener, Dean of Allied Health. “They are both rigorous and invitational, and the entire WNC region appreciates and respects the graduates their superb program turns out.” Graduates obtaining national certification as a CST demonstrate, by examination, understanding of the basic competencies for safe patient care in the operating room. The CST is widely recognized in the health care community as the foremost credential for surgical technologists in the nation. The CST is required for employment within many local, state and national health care organizations.

23

Solar Workstations Installed on Campus Three solar workstations were installed on A-B Tech’s main campus in front of the A-B Tech/Mission Health Conference Center, at Dogwood, and in front of Locke Library. Each workstation is solar-powered and self-contained, meaning they aren’t hooked into the grid. They have multiple 110-volt outlets and USB ports for charging, along with LED lights on a timer for night time use. The workstations were set up and their sites were prepared by students in the Construction Management and Sustainability Technology programs. A-B Tech also became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). AASHE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership organization that empowers higher education faculty, administrators, staff and students to be effective change agents and drivers of sustainability innovation.

A-B Tech Awarded NSF Grant to Increase Participation in STEM Careers A-B Tech received a $331,650 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through its Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Program. The grant, which is the third awarded to the college by NSF, further supported A-B Tech’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in all careers. Skilled Workers Get Jobs 2.1: High School Engagement, focuses on developing programs in conjunction with local high schools. A-B Tech used the grant to address two primary goals: (1) Improve the understanding and perception of Technology and Engineering careers and educational opportunities in targeted programs; and, (2) Increase number and diversity of technicians available for the workforce.
