abtech.edu/sbc 828-398-7950 What is the most challenging aspect of owning a business?

INCUBATOR FOUNDER PROFILE – Meg Ragland, Plum Print What is your business?

Plum Print takes the overwhelming piles of artwork that children produce, digitizes the art, and turns it into elegant coffee table books for the artist and their family to enjoy forever. Why did you start a business?

Plum Print was created to take care of a big issue (for virtually every mom!) that had no great solution: “Where am I supposed to store all this stuff that comes home from school?” And to alleviate the guilt associated with: “Will my kids notice if I throw it out?” And because of the simple fact that most young moms can say, “For goodness' sake, my mom still has my own artwork 30 years later!” Have you started other businesses?

No. Before launching Plum Print, I was a magazine editor in New York City. My family moved from NYC to Asheville in 2012. My husband, Gar, is also an entrepreneur. He is the director and co-founder of NewSong Music. How has the A-B Tech Small Business Center assisted you?

The resources and people at the A-B Tech Small Business Center & Incubator have helped us immensely. First and foremost, we’ve been given a home. The Plum Print offices and studio reside in the Small Business Center. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by other young businesses headed up by energetic, smart, hardworking people. The other founders are always willing to give advice, thoughts and suggestions. The center has connected us with awesome advisors in the community for legal, financial, marketing and logistical help. The staff of the center goes above and beyond: looking over our P&Ls every quarter, researching random businessrelated questions for us, and even carrying heavy boxes for us when we are too weak

52

I find this definition of an entrepreneur to be all too true: “An entrepreneur is a person who will work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week.” Indeed, finding enough time to get everything done is, for me, the most challenging aspect of owning my own business. My business partner and I would love to spend the majority of our time on strategy and finding new ways to continue to grow our business. But, as is very common, we spend most of our time dealing with the day-to-day. Luckily, even our everyday tasks are fun! We get to deal with beautiful, vibrant artwork created by kids from all across the country, and even the globe. And our customers are proud, loving parents who are celebrating their children’s creativity. It doesn’t get much better than that! What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

You’ve got to believe in yourself and believe in your business. There will be plenty of people who may shake their heads at your idea. That’s okay, and it’s actually good. Criticism can be helpful. But don’t let it get you down. Use it to reevaluate and redirect your efforts, if necessary. And network, network, network! It’s amazing the number of people out there who are willing to help you. Surround yourself with smart, creative people who you can bounce ideas off of…continuously. They will help you climb the ladder to success! To get started on your child's Plum Print book, simply mail or drop off your artwork to: Plum Print, 1465 Sand Hill Road, Suite 2000, Candler, NC 28715
