Exsol Labs, LLC
Exsol Labs, LLC is a leading Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) reclamation and technical services company. Initially formed in October 2007 by three partners: Robert J. Barnett, Jr., Kenneth R. Hall, and Jonathan Snover, the company recycles metallic monolith catalytic converters, and other stainless steel corrugated air pollution reduction devices, to reclaim the precious metals of platinum, palladium, and rhodium. PGMs are classified strategic metals by the U.S. government, and are widely utilized in both industrial and manufacturing applications. Exsol Labs, LLC was formed under a conviction of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Its revolutionary processes allow the company to reclaim 100% of available reclamation material while utilizing minimal reduction energy. The company began its operations as a joint research partnership with Western Carolina University and subsequently moved to the A-B Tech Enka Site, where it now has laboratory and production facilities. Its association with A-B Tech, and in particular the research facilities of the Business Incubator, have been recognized as being essential to the early development of the company. From its beginnings as a joint research project, the company now processes tons of material per month from sources all across the country. It has been publically recognized for its innovative methods and unique approach, providing environmentally low impact processes to what has historically been a high carbon methodology. The company is presently enjoying explosive growth and has aligned itself with leading industry partnerships in anticipation of continued expansion. Abstract Art
Learn how to make abstract art through a variety of mediums such as painting, charcoals, and collage. Students will learn about line, texture, color and shape, while gaining insight into important abstract artists and theories. This class will encourage exploration into your creative side. Art History - A Survey of Art
Art history can tell more about a culture than any other subject matter and during this exploration, we'll cover just a small part of the world of art. Using PowerPoint images and some snippets from movies dealing with art, we will study the beginning, the middle, and, as the culture goes, the probable end of art. We will conduct a visual survey of art including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and some architecture. Calligraphy
Roundhand is an excellent "easy calligraphy" because it is simple, clear and beautiful. It is constructed of smooth, regular lines and circles, so it's easy to see where you've gone wrong and easy to put it right. It encourages good calligraphic habits. When you learn roundhand it lends itself to almost any lettering purpose and will launch you into more serious calligraphy skills. You will complete a finished piece such as a poem or quotation. Collage Art and Mixed Media
Create a series of expressive collages while learning the fundamentals of art and design through traditional and experimental collage methods. Basic design principles, creative techniques, and art appreciation will be covered in this four-week class taught by Ursula Gullow. This class will encourage you to awaken spontaneity, curiosity, and creative freedom. You will be taught how to incorporate painting, intuitive drawing, paper, and photos into your work exploring abstract expressionism, narrative and interactive art. Painting, Exploring Oil Painting Methods and Materials Workshop
Are you curious to learn about all that oil painting has to offer? Do you find yourself in the art supply store wondering what all those oil painting products are used for? This workshop introduces students to a variety of oil painting techniques -- from glazing methods to impasto painting. Students will use different mediums -- like cold wax and Liquin -- and learn how to use oil bars, varnishes, solvents, and palette knives. You will even learn how to make your own paint! This workshop is open to students of all levels – from the novice painter to the seasoned pro – the only requirement is a sense of adventure. Student should bring canvases, brushes, odorless turpenoid a palette knife and 1-5 tubes of paint (any color). Students are encouraged to bring any other products they might have lying around and are unsure of how to work with. Photography, Photographing People/Capture the Moment Whether you are looking to improve your picture taking skills of friends and family, or want to cover business events more effectively, this course is designed for you. You will explore natural portraiture, as well as action photography and event coverage. Pottery, Beginning Wheel Made Easy
This class is designed and structured for beginning students and will introduce the basic techniques involved in throwing on the potter's wheel and hand-building through class demonstrations and hands-on experience. All students will begin with simple forms to learn the basic skills of centering, pulling, and trimming. Glazing and firing procedures will also be covered. Pottery, Landscape Art and Garden Containers
Pottery, Vases and Bottles
This exciting class is designed for both beginning and intermediate levels. You will make containers for plants to grow in such as planters, wall planters, and stacked tower planters. You will also make garden art such as garden-sized bird baths, lanterns, and bird houses. These projects will involve wheel and hand-building, as well as the use of decorative techniques. This intermediate wheel class will concentrate solely on bottle and vase forms, using untrimmed well-thrown cylinders as a starting point. With line, texture, and volume we will make a variety of sculptural pots. Come and learn the strategies for throwing drier, lighter, untrimmed bottles and vases. Liberate yourself from the batt! Pottery, Six Degrees of Surface Design
Stained Glass, Beginning
One of the most fundamental yet creative aspects of ceramics is surface embellishment. Putting distinctive marks and decorations on an object is a versatile method for making a piece individual and unique for any clay artist. Create dynamic surface decoration incorporating such techniques as slip (dip, brush, trail, and inlay), paper resist, wax resist, wax resist inlay, and sgraffito. You will hand build six of the same form incorporating six surface techniques from the variety of methods taught in the class. Basic pottery skills needed. The lab fee includes one-half bag (12.5 lbs.) of clay, glazes, and firing.
Stained glass is often used in the making of windows and lampshades, but is also useful for boxes, clocks, cabinet doors, picture frames and other 3-dimensional projects. In this class you will learn how to cut, grind, foil, and solder one-of-a-kind stained glass projects using the copper foil method. Tools and supplies will cost $100-$150. Pottery, The Lidded Form: Jars and Their Lids
This intermediate class will explore a variety of cylinder-based jar forms and the lids that complete them. You will learn to make inset and overhanging lids, on round and altered bodies, finished with feet, knobs, straps, and lugs. Bring your ideas and we will develop them as a group. This class will culminate in a cone 6 glaze firing. Friendly critiques begin each class. Previous clay experience is required. Stained Glass, Intermediate/Lead Came
The lead came method was used for centuries in Europe, mainly in religious buildings such as cathedrals, churches and monasteries, and including wealthy or aristocratic homes. This class is designed to teach you the techniques of lead came including pattern preparation, safety, cutting the lead came and soldering it together. This is a hands-on class; you will complete a finished leaded panel. The first week will be project demonstration. Prerequisite: Beginning Stained Glass class or equivalent experience. This 6 week class is designed for people that are new to watercolors or just haven't had success in the past. Although believed to be a difficult medium, watercolors' unique working characteristics and unique working process are easily learned. We will unlock the mysteries as we cover the fundamental elements of successful watercolor painting: the "secret" to create glowing, transparent washes; effective color mixing; tonal value and the color/value relationships; how to plan your painting; and basic composition. Knit a Hat

Do you want to save money on your framing projects? Do it yourself for less than half the price you'd have to pay a professional! Learn how to cut mats, assemble frames and create custom-designed pieces that will enhance a variety of projects. Students will mat and frame two to five pieces of their choice. Motorcycle Safety Education Program
This 20-hour course is part of the NC Motorcycle Safety Program. In this class, riders will learn the basics of operating a motorcycle. The course is held on Friday evenings, and all day Saturday and Sunday. One hundred percent attendance of all scheduled class hours is mandatory. NO EXCEPTIONS! Required gear for all participants: long pants, long-sleeve shirts, boots over the ankle, full-fingered gloves, eye protection (sunglasses or prescription eyewear is permissible), and a DOT approved helmet. Motorcycles will be provided. Cost includes a comprehensive insurance fee of $4. Animals Learning Theory in the Real World
Designed for pet industry professionals seeking a thorough and practical introduction to the components of learning theory as it relates to dogs, this course will provide attendants with a user-friendly yet profound understanding of one of the most widely accepted bodies of information (learning theory) in behavioral science. For professionals with an intense interest in how to design and implement behavior modification in any environment (such as vet hospitals, kennels, daycares, and shelters) this class will be a valuable guide. This course is designed to provide the necessary information for the interventions appropriate to the EMT-Intermediate, and is required for Intermediate credentials Topics include automated external defibrillation, basic cardiac electrophysiology, intravenous therapy, venipuncture, acid-base balance, and fluids and electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to properly establish an IV line, obtain venous blood, utilize AEDs, and correctly interpret arterial blood gases. Student prerequisites: high school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum at the high school grade level. Basic Firefighter Indoctrination Training, a program designed to train and prepare students to take the Firefighter II Certification Exam for the state of North Carolina. This is a comprehensive training program that will be challenging physically, mentally and academically. Fundamentals of Automated Machining
This course introduces machining operations as they relate to the metalworking industry. Topics include: machine shop safety, shop math, measuring tools, and basic blueprint interpretation; introduction and operation of lathes, drill presses, saws, milling machines, bench grinders, and layout instruments. Plumbing License Renewal
This course is designed to develop knowledge and skills for basic fire prevention code enforcement. This course follows the guidelines set by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board. Lecture, demonstration, and skills evaluation are the principal methods of instruction. Specific training areas include: rules of building code enforcement, fire code as it relates to other building codes, use of the fire prevention code, and technical provisions.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt
This is an extensive quality course that focuses upon data-driven process improvement through the application of the Define - Measure - Analyze - Improve - Control (DMAIC) project management methodology. Students will learn skills necessary to set up and implement project charters, data collection plans, data analysis, pilot solutions and other Lean Six Sigma improvement activities. Winter Suns Farms
Winter Sun Farms is a program that allows its subscribers to enjoy fruits and vegetables from the region long after the farmer’s markets have shut down for the winter. Berries, greens, beans and more are delivered to Blue Ridge Food Ventures fresh from the fields in the height of the growing season. The fresh produce is then prepped, packaged and frozen. Once a month, from December through March of each year, Winter Sun Farms subscribers pick up their winter-basket of frozen produce to take home and enjoy. Adobe Camera Raw
This course is for the serious amateur or professional photographer. Raw formats allow you to receive images before any in-camera processing has been performed. Students will be working on PCs in class, but Mac users feel free to bring a laptop loaded with Photoshop CS or Elements. Bring some of your raw files from your digital camera (on a memory disc or CD) and using these uncompressed digital negatives, learn new editing techniques such as automating RAW workflow, correcting exposures, extending exposure range, manipulating gray scale and working with the new DNG open standard that Adobe supports. Refund Policy: As established by the NC State Board of Community Colleges, a refund shall be made under the following circumstances: 1) If a student officially withdraws prior to the first class meeting, the student will receive a 100% refund; 2) If a class is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, a student will receive a 100% refund; 3) A 75% refund will be issued (Self-Supporting classes with prefixes CSP and SEF are excluded) if the student officially withdraws prior to or on the 10 percent point of the scheduled hours of the class; 4) No refund will be made after the 10 percent point of the class; 5)The insurance fee is refundable only if a class is canceled or the student drops before the class begins. 6) There will be a minimum of three to four weeks to process refunds. Repeat Policy Occupational extension courses may not be taken more than twice within a five-year period without the student paying the full cost of the course as determined by the college. Students may repeat occupational extension courses more than once if the repetitions are required for certification, licensure, or recertification. Senior Citizens Tuition shall be waived for one course of non-credit instruction (excluding self-supporting courses with prefixes CSP and SEF) per academic semester (January 1 - May 15; May 16 - August 14; August 15 - December 31) for senior citizens who are 65 or older before the start date of the class and who are qualified as legal residents of North Carolina. Seniors are required to purchase insurance, textbooks, and supplies where applicable. Student Eligibility Continuing education course offerings are designed for adult learners. In special cases, 16 and 17 year-olds will be considered when (1) there is available space in the class and (2) they obtain the required permissions and signatures on the College’s Minor Permission Form.

Books
Because of the high cost of books, we only have students purchase textbooks when they are essential. Students should bring the book with them to the first class. Textbooks can be purchased at the Asheville Campus and Enka Site. Hours for the Asheville and Enka locations are 8:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Books are available at the Madison Site for classes scheduled at that campus only. Hours for the Madison Site are 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. For textbook title and cost, go to abtech.edu/ce/textbook
