There are several different methods of language teaching which have tried over the years. Three of the earliest was translation, the direct method and the audio-lingual method. In the translation method students simply translate texts from the target language into their native language. They also required memorizing vocabulary and verb forms. They were often not taught spoken forms, so little if any conversation takes place in the classroom. The direct method was a reaction to the important of reading in the translation method. In the direct method, students hear the target language in the classroom, but they did not see it writing. The idea of the direct method was that students will learn a second language as they learned their first language, "directly," without being taught. Some teachers refused speaking even one word of the student's native language in her classroom. The audio-lingual method has become popular in the 1960s, this way of teaching made extensive use of tape recorders. Students required to listen to and to memorize dialogues and then do drills on various structures. Practitioners of this approach believed that language learning was a mechanical process dependent on a lot of practice.
