VOLUME 26 | March 16 - 31 | 2011
FROM THE EDITOR As I write this Japan is reeling from the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit its shores on March 11. I hope that by the time you read this that the disaster would have been overcome and that the country would be back on its feet. The size of the disaster is staggering, and the human pain is tragic. What’s for certain is that a disaster of this magnitude can be overwhelming to any country’s infrastructure-- and this is when people power is so vital.
ENTERTAINMENT 4 USPACE 6 What’s hot
Having lived in Seattle (Wa) for many years, I was always aware of the strong sense of community that prevailed at times of difficulty. Indeed, it was so ingrained in the city’s psyche that whenever a problem happened in one quarter of the community, the others came forward to help and heal. Kind of like how white blood cells work: anytime a germ or an infection invades a body, the white blood cells snap to attention and race towards the scene of disaster.
7 Abu Dhabi Quiz
In Japan the prime minister called upon his people to show their humanity; to act quickly and help each other, regardless of who and where they were helping.
12 Photo tripping
This is why community is so important to us all. In Abu Dhabi we see this in the incredible tapestry of races, religions and backgrounds that each of us brings to the city and adds to its flavour and soul. Kindness, Abu Dhabi, pass it on.

SPACE Hello Tempo,
Hi Tempo,
I just downloaded the latest edition from your web site and read the article on the Kalimat game app. It’s a nice piece but unfortunately the writer didn’t try Remix mode which is what makes Kalimat so different, e.g. the faster you play the more points you get. It also doesn’t mention that the game can be played in Arabic as well as English. But thank you very much for publishing about Kalimat. David Ashford General Manager of AppsArabia, TwoFour54
Loved your article of the 1-16 March issue on smoking and its “benefits” ;) Dave Solomon’s sarcasm is to be applauded!

Sky of Love Seeing the sky every single day Makes me wonder why you went away To leave me and my dreams My hopes, my wishes and all I ever wanted to be And give up on yourself, because of your disease Is pure evil, and shows me you’re weak Weren’t you the one who told me That all I had to do Was to believe? Didn’t you see hope in yourself Even after you were diagnosed with your disease To believe that you’d get better And never leave All I think about is the sky The sky you told me to look at When I cried by your side Because you told me that if you ever died You’d be waving to me, from the sky So all I do is hope And wait Till you wave to me From that place Where you use to call it “The Sky of Love” Because the sky Is way up above Like my love to you

What’s HOT MOTHER AND BABY MOVIE TIME Sundays and Tuesdays
CineRoyal has introduced “Mother and Baby screenings”. Until very recently, Abu Dhabi had very little to offer in terms of cinema options for mums and babies. But hopefully this is a trend that is starting to change as retailers begin catering to parents with babies in tow. CineRoyal wants to make it acceptable and civilised for young kids to accompany their mums and dads to the movies. Although cinema going is a popular activity in the capital, it has been off limits for parents with babies and toddlers...till now that is. Tempo suggests you put aside all the chores on Sundays and Tuesdays mornings - which are the specially assigned days --to take in the latest block busters. The cinema spokesperson says that parents needn’t worry about the baby making noises, since everyone else would be bringing their own little brood along as well. The cinema also told us that they would make special adjustments to the theatre’s volume and lighting to create a comfortable environment for the babies. (Tempo tip: just be sure to cover baby’s eyes and ears if anything, shall we say ‘unsavoury’ pops up on screen).
EARTH HOUR 2011 This Earth Hour go beyond the hour! 26 March
At 8.30pm, Earth Hour will be celebrated worldwide as a commitment to global energy conservation. What makes it so cool is that it is a collective effort and everyone can pitch in to make a difference. Malls, offices and homes will be called upon to loosen their lightbulbs and put on the lights on March 26 and staying in the dark for 60 minutes.
Emirates Wildlife Society with WWF, is calling it “Beyond the Hour Call” and inviting people to upload photos showing their commitment to a sustainable lifestyle. The UAE has been participating in Earth Hour since 2008, increasing its level of participation year upon year. Whether you are an individual, a business, a school or a city, Earth Hour 2011 is your Earth Hour. You can show your support by voluntarily joining the Earth Hour movement in the UAE. Spread the word and encourage your friends! (Tempo tip: You can also create your own Earth Hour event in your community) .

Photo tripping TO THOSE AMATEURS, PROFESSIONALS: A SPACE TO SHARE YOUR PHOTOS AND YOUR TECHNIQUES
PHOTOGRAPHING coloured PORTRAITS Last issue we talked about Black and White portraits. This issue we tell you how to achieve evocative portraits.
1. Keep it Simple The more complex your scene is the more unlikely you are to get a shot that has that ‘X factor’. Keep your backgrounds (and foregrounds) uncluttered, work with natural light where you can, and if you have to use artificial light keep it simple and use as few lights as possible.
2. Set up the Shot Before Introducing Your Subject Be as prepared as possible before your subject arrives. If you’re shooting in a studio have your lighting ready, camera set up and ready to go. If you’re shooting on location know where you want to shoot. Have your camera’s settings ready to go and even do a few test shots before your subject arrives. This way you don’t keep them waiting around and get to photograph them while they are still fresh looking.
3. Capture Real Moments Let your subject have some creative freedom – always try and include a proper mix of candid moments and a bit of posing.
Tell your subject not to be afraid of making a fool out of himself or herself. Posing isn’t bad if it’s done right, just tell them not to don’t overdo it. Making your subject comfortable can be done by telling jokes or just by encouraging them to let their guard down and have a good time. The less ‘professional’ you as a photographer can make your shoot, the more natural you will get your subject.
4. Shoot from Slightly Below Your Subject’s Eyeline Shooting from slightly below a person’s eyeline is quite flattering for most people. Do this when a subject is standing or sitting. Tempo recommends lighting from slightly below rather than above a subject.
5. Shoot into the Light When shooting outdoors, back lighting is the shiznit. This adds interest, depth and sometimes colour into an image. Lens hoods are a must if you’re doing this outside in bright environments, though you’ll also need a fill-in flash.
TEMPO SPOKE TO PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO SHARED THEIR WORK AND INSIGHT: Photographer: Hurr Al-Dalli Film Director Title of the picture: Children of the South Location: Al Ashouria, Morocco Subject: Children from the village Setting: Around 9 to 10 am, in the village Purpose of the shot: For a photo essay about the place Camera Model: Canon 500D, with Canon EFS lens 18-55mm F.Stop/Aperture: 4.6 at 29mm ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/250 of a sec Tip: Be bold, don’t be afraid to get close to your subject. Also, a false white balance can work to your benefit, as the camera will throw in a colour to negate the original colour. Example, white balance with a greenish tint, will give you a magenta-ish glow to your picture. 12

Title of the picture: Cool pair Location: My home Subject: My daughter, Nawal Setting: Outdoor Purpose of the shot: It was festive day of Eid Al Adha, and this little sparrow landed on the shoulder of my daughter, Nawal. I rushed to fetch my camera and clicked impulsively. Nawal did not realize that a sparrow was sitting on her shoulder. It got a bit comfortable before it took flight. Camera model: Pentax MZ-50 with Pentax 35-80mm Lens F-stop/ Aperture: 5.6 ISO: 100 Shutter speed: 1/100 sec.
Title of the picture: Baby Bliss Location: Zabeel Park , Dubai, UAE Subject: Nafi’s Baby Setting: A Bright Day At The Park With A Camera Ready In Hand. Purpose of the shot: This baby “goo-goo-gaa-gaa”-ed at me and I couldn’t help but capture the precious little face on my camera. Camera model: Canon PowerShot A3100 using 6.2 - 24.8 mm lens, Aperture: 4.0 ISO: 1250 Shutter speed: 1/15th of a sec
Tip: To capture a lucky shot, one needs to respond very quickly in such circumstances. Shoot on impulse, one should not waste too much time on setting. Preferably set the mode to auto e.g. Portrait, Action or Aperture. You have to shoot alot to get at least one lucky shot.
Tip: The more the light, the brighter and vivid the picture is. Focus on the subject and let the rest of the world blur on your camera view.
Photographer: Muhammad Osman Gul Economics student Title of the picture: Endless Vision Location: AbuDhabi Breakwater (near Abu Dhabi Theater and Marina Mall) Subject: Mohammad Adeeb Alam Setting: Outdoor by the breakwater using ample sunlight Purpose of the shot: Randomly took this one while hanging out with friends at the Abu Dhabi Breakwater, but later realized how the breakwater has changed over the years. The subject looking into the vast sea, juxtuposes the timelessness of the background with the spirit of youthfulness. Camera Model: Canon EOS-1000D with 50mm 1.6 portrait lens F-stop: 4.0 ISO/Shutter Speed = 1/200th of a second (this has to be my mostrecommended) Tip: Details speak words. Try to capture picture with a lot of depth and details. Also, boldly find your camera position. Framing is extremely important in case of portraits. I believe in having a symmetric approach because that reduces the dead-space and puts focus on the details. Our next topic is on “Landscape” shots. If you’d like to share your photos email them with details to ellaine@abudhabitempo.com

Convenience in almost everything...
The thing you most hate about living in the UAE? How people don’t notice when they emit a smell.
The hot weather in the summer.
You are having guests for dinner at your home, what are you likely to serve? Depends… If they were close friends and they like what I like, I’d probably serve pizza.
Actually, I base it on whoever is coming...
Your favourite line from a song? Your favourite line from a movie?
Song: “Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.” (Band: Guns n Roses. Song: November rain) Movie: “Here’s looking at you, kid.” (Casablanca)

The challenges the city offers...
If there was something you could improve about this place, what would it be? To decrease the rent prices
The pavements...
What is the easiest way to get along with other cultures of Abu Dhabi? Tolerance. Accept everyone for who they are and don’t judge, and you’ll get along just fine.

MORELLI’S The Scene: It was my Dad’s birthday so to celebrate it we dined out and went to Morelli’s Gelato in Khalidiyah Mall for ice cream! I scream for iiice creeeeam! Morelli’s Family has been making ice cream for five generations now… it all started when Mr. Giuseppe and his son, Mario, first started selling fresh ice cream through the back of a bicycle leaving early in the morning and would not come home until they had sold out. Despite being located in the middle of the ground floor, where the hustle and bustle takes place, service is great, and extremely friendly. What we’ve tried: The menu, for an ice cream story, is actually quite varied. It ranges from contemporary to classic... we chose the Chocolate Grand Sundae. The presentation was simply enticing so I didn’t know where to attack... whether to dig right at the bottom or scoop the top off first! It was soft vanilla and chocolate gelato, served with chocolate sauce in a chocolate cup, a double chocolate flake, fresh whipped cream, and biscuit wafer (with Morelli’s logo!) Heaven!! Apart from the ice-creams, you can choose from a variety of milkshakes and other desserts whipped up just the way you want it. Where: The Khalidiyah Mall branch is unfortunately closed due to relocation, but you can try out their other branch at Al Wahda Mall.

The important thing is kick-buttin’ action at every turn. The goal is ‘kill with skill’ – creativity with finishing moves (and there are tons) means more points. You have a cool variety of weapons to do them with, plus kick and slide defence/attack moves, and an electric leash for grabbing items and subduing enemies. The missions have nice variety, the action is fast and fiery and the graphics are impressive with vivid landscapes. The dialogue, albeit potty-mouthed is funny, and the three main characters (there’s badass girl – Trishka) are only fairly portrayed. The multiplayer is a horde format where you and your friends fight successive waves of enemies. Rating: 7.5/10 Recommendation: Get it! Tempo March 16 - 31, 2011

ARTSY WEARABLE ART
Photos by CORNELIA WEARABLE ART
Who says artwork can only be showcased in museums or art galleries? Cornelia’s Wearable Art meticulously reinvents masterpieces of artists such as Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol and lot more into unique wearable jewellery pieces. Introduce yourself and tell us about your art form. Cornelia Baciu: My name is Cornelia Baciu, I am from Romania and I have been in Abu Dhabi for three years. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Languages and until recently I had a full time job but I have decided now to concentrate on my passion -creating wearable art jewelry design. I had always created my own accessories because I am the kind
of person who wants to escape from the ordinary and make a statement. Family and friends started admiring my designs and soon more and more people contacted me to create unique pieces for them. This is how it all started….By the way I want to thank my wonderful husband for supporting me in everything I do and for encouraging me to follow my dreams. Who is your biggest inspiration? Cornelia Baciu: I get my inspiration from everywhere and anything that can inspire me... from a painting to the colours of a butterfly’s wing. My biggest inspiration is Salvador Dali. My belief is that we can take art off the wall and bring it to life in a unique way. We are used to seeing art only in museums or art galleries but I am trying to take it out of a fixed display environment and reinventing it as unique handmade wearable art jewelry.
One of Alfred Gockel’s Heart series
Why is this special to a buyer, and what do other artists think of your jewellery? Cornelia Baciu: The purpose of my jewelry is to reflect the personality of the individual who wears it and to make her more special because of its unique appearance, originality and bold, daring design, It is not necessarily because of the preciousness of the material. It is designed for those who appreciate art and beauty – I don’t think my creations are for everybody’s taste. I am very happy to say that I had positive reactions from the artist community in the UAE and in Europe.

What is your studio or workspace like, and how do you go about creating a piece? Cornelia Baciu: At the moment my studio is not a very big workspace but inshallah it will be expanded soon. First I choose a painting or a sculpture that inspires me. Or the customer may present me with one that she would like me to use. After that I draw a sketch of the necklace or set. I never go anywhere without my sketching pad! I select the colours and the materials that I want to use, but unfortunately the materials that I am using cannot be found in UAE so I have to order them from the US or Europe.

How would you describe your style of designing the artful accessories and what type of materials do you prefer? Cornelia Baciu: I focus in particular on combined contemporary design and various mixed media techniques, creating unusual works of wearable art using polymer clay, wire, fabric, resin, shell, wood, felt, lace, vintage and contemporary pieces of jewelry and beads. My designs can be considered bold and daring as they are meant to be out of the ordinary; to make a statement and express the personality of the person who wears them. Each piece is one of a kind, meticulously handmade and hand painted and cannot be exactly reproduced. It is meant for a person who wants to be original and to be able to say “no one else has what I am wearing!” What new directions do you hope to move in the future? Do you have big plans, new ideas or designs you will be exploring soon? Cornelia Baciu: The next step is the creation of my website – hopefully it will be finished by the end of next month. Today I had my first Jewelry Art Van Gogh’s Sunflowers
Fashion Show in Abu Dhabi and I hope this is just the beginning. I would like to see my work in the Art Galleries in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I have many ideas and projects in mind - I am working on a new collection of Eco-chic sustainable accessories (recycled and repurposed pieces). I will collaborate with an abayya designer for a nature inspired collection and I will teach art classes – more details coming soon! Can people request works from you and if so how can they reach you? Cornelia Baciu: I hope my website will be ready soon – until then people can contact me on my Facebook page “Cornelia Baciu – Wearable Art” or add me as a friend “Cornelia Wearable Art” to request custom pieces from a certain painting or any other design they have in mind, in a specific colour, shape or material.

Roof Tops of Jodhpur
Forts of Jodhpur by Sunset
Last stop.. Jaipur and Jodhpur The last two stops on our whirlwind Rajasthan tour were Jaipur and Jodhpur. Known as the pink and blue cities they were a busting mix of forts, temples, markets, stalls, people, cars, trucks and cows! Like most of the big cities in India the history and culture that each city holds is mind blowing and for any history or religious buff - the temples and forts can keep you enthralled for days on end. There is so much to do in each city with so little time you really do have to pick and choose at what pace you want to travel. With most of India very laid back and relaxed amongst the hilarious ciaos there is a place for everyone in this bustling country. The drive back to Delhi like the rest of our trip was a mix between hair raising and amazing sights, every second glimpse out the window was a National Geographic worthy shot. The cars, trucks and tuk tuks share the highways with cows, (yes the cows followed us everywhere!), goats and camels - yes camels. The sides of the road were filled in most parts with small villages or fields of beautiful mustard plants with their fluorescent yellow flowers. But that was India, from the totally crazy, astonishing in some parts, to the indescribable beauty in others. It was truly a fantastic, unforgettable trip with a little bit of “something something thrown in along the way.

DOC in the house?
Here’s What I Saw Last Night... needles in her arms to give her medications and intravenous fluids. After several CT scans we discover that one half of her face is now a collection of crushed, distorted bone fragments. Bonus!!!!!!!! She has a bleed in her brain. That “snot” I had mentioned earlier, doesn’t look like regular snot and the CT confirms this. It’s the fluid surrounding her brain, and now it’s just draining from her nose. Further details are not necessary but an idea of how the accident happened is key. Mother and Father were driving home late one night, and the kids were sitting in the back seat playing. But here’s the problem, which may not be so apparent to some of you. They are 5 yrs old and sitting by themselves in the back of an SUV. They are not restrained in any manner. Cars are designed with adults in mind. When the accident occurred, they were ejected, head first, from the backseat through the windshield onto the street. Have you ever tried to break a windshield? Now, how about with a kid’s head?? (hence why I had asked earlier, if you like kids). Do you like kids?? I don’t mean, like, as in the “save the world” type of caring, but do you just like them?? The way they smile and laugh because they want to, or just find simple things funny?? The great stories they tell.... Would you ever hurt a child? And to go one step further, would you ever want to intentionally hurt a child? Consider this scenario. It happened...
So, if you answered no, why even let them be exposed to such risk? Why should two young girls, who haven’t had a chance to enjoy life, be subjected to such horror? Where I come from, people cry afoul at the slightest infraction of their civil liberties, BUT we can all agree on one thing. Car seats are good for kids. The car seat is there to save lives- your kid’s life!!!
A private vehicle shows up, bringing in a young girl who was just involved in a car accident. She does not look well. But wait, there’s another child! Her sister it seems.... no way, it gets better, its her twin!!!! She also looks bad (a FUBAR as we say in N. America).
You tell everyone about your infinite love for your kids, that you’ll do anything for them, but somehow something so simple such as the car seat won’t even get a consideration.
Let me explain what I saw:
They don’t hurt your car, it’s selfish not to have them, and even better, you’re an idiot to ignore them.
Patient one- A young female, approximately 5 yrs old. Clothing and hair covered in blood. She is not breathing on her own, nor moving or responding to my touch. One of her legs is twisted above the knee at an impossible angle. She has a pulse that I can barely feel.
Instead of feeling all that love, you’ll be left with rage and hopelessness after witnessing the carnage inflicted upon your child after ignoring that car seat.
Anyway, who’s more important- your kid, or your car??
Patient two- She is supposed to look like her sister but there is something wrong with her face. Half of it is flat- she has lost the shape of her cheekbone, eye socket and nose. She is crying, and appears petrified. I am sure all she can see (assuming she can see) is bright lights, unfamiliar faces and hearing unfamiliar voices. “Snot” drains from her nose, while fluid and blood drains from her ear. My colleague takes care of patient one- she gets a breathing tube and is placed on a mechanical breathing device. She then gets a bunch of CT scans and has to go to the operating room for horrific internal injuries. My patient aka, patient two. Her face begins to swell in a lopsided way, which distorts her features even more in ways I don’t care to rethink about. She is wide awake while we place 25
By ellaine fatima Tamakkan photo by newzglobe.com ENTREPRENEUR: NEWZGLOBE.COM Tempo had a chat with Meraj Syed, CEO of Newzglobe.com about how his ‘small business’ grew up to be one of the country’s top news sites. I would only have myself to blame. I have failed many times in my career. And everytime I have failed I felt like doing another risky project. I am a gambler in the sense that I take chances and put everything on the line. Tempo: How hard or difficult was it to set up a business?
Tempo:Who is Meraj Syed - please introduce yourself. Meraj Syed: I am 39 years old. I was born in Pakistan but moved with my family to Sweden when I was three. I wanted to become an artist. Studied art in Stockholm Sweden. But I also wanted to become an entrepreneur. I started my first company when I was 19 in Sweden. Tempo: Tell us about Newzglobe.com. Meraj Syed: I started Newzglobe.com six years ago in Sweden because I felt that there weren’t that many business news about SME companies. The news were almost always covering big corporations. 95% of Sweden’s companies are SMEs so it was a natural thing to do. A lot of people told me I was crazy and that the competition was too hard, but I knew that there was a gap in the market. The start in any project is thrilling but also very difficult. You have to set a standard and follow it. But you have to at the same time be flexible. Listen to your readers, and what they want. Look closely at what is happening in the market. Look at your competitors several times a day to see which direction they are going. Always try to go in a different direction. Tempo: What made you decide to become an entrepreneur? Meraj Syed: I always wanted to create something. I went to art school and I loved the idea of creating things. So the step to becoming an entrepreneur was natural. I was tired of being employee, I wanted to be my own boss and create my on concept. If I failed with my concept
Meraj Syed: It was pretty hard the first time I set my business when I was 19. There were so many laws and regulations to follow and build up your business network of companies and people. But over the years you learn things and it becomes a routine. But when I moved to Dubai I had to learn everything from the beginning again. It was a totally different way of thinking and doing business here. Not to mention setting up a company. But I think it was healthy for me to learn everything here from the ground up. My knowledge about UAE business has grown a lot thanks to my experience with UAE authorities. Tempo: What are the challenges you still face? Meraj Syed: The competition from online and offline news sources. We have to be on top of every important business news. The fast moving market is another thing. The internet is setting new rules everyday and that can be good or it can be devastating for many companies. New intelligent services are launched everyday and in order to keep up with all that you have to think outside the box constantly. Today something is great, tomorrow it is useless. It is not like before the internet boom. Tempo: What are your future plans ? Meraj Syed: My future plans are to expand Newzglobe to other countries. We are already in talks with some partners in four different countries right now. The concept of Newzglobe.com is easy and effective to implement in many countries. Tempo: What are the values you live by? Meraj Syed: For me loyalty is the most important value. Without loyalty you have nothing. You can have people around yourself who are great at what they do but if they are not loyal to you or your company then they are not the right people. Secondly with dedication, people can get a lot of things done by strong wills. Nothing comes for free. Thirdly believe in yourself and your ideas. If you don’t believe in your ideas then no one else will. Convince people that you have a great business idea and you will get their loyalty and their dedication.
Come hear Meraj Syed and other entrepreneurs at the next Tamakkan on March 29 at Mamoura Auditorium. Tamakkan is a free seminar for entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and innovators. Register by emailing priya@brandmoxie.com or calling 02-6673349. 26

Affordable Art for the People – to the People February was a hectic month. It was a mixed bag of good and bad things happening all at once. From exciting new exhibitions to moving house and having a pet go missing... everything wonderful and dreadful occurred this month. The marvellous thing is that February is over, we are halfway into March now, and Art Dubai is here. Though Art Dubai is fun and exciting, to buy a piece of work from one of the exhibiting galleries you need deep pockets. Unfortunately, so is the case with Art Abu Dhabi. Thankfully, Fanaan, the locally based artists group, of which I am a member, decided to come up with a novel idea – taking art to the people themselves. At Fanaan all artwork is original, unique and affordable. On the 26th and 27th of February, we displayed our works at Sorouh Golf Gardens in Abu Dhabi. This fascinating two day exhibition was courtesy of Sorouh. We had an impressive turnout and quite a few sales. Apart from me, other members of Fanaan - Julia Ibbini, Jennifer Simon, Emily Gordon, Elwin Buchel and Janine Ibbini also participated. All of us put in a lot of hard work to make this event come through. This was our latest exhibition after ‘Up Close’ which was held through ADACH at the National Theatre in September – October 2010. The best part about taking art to the people is that it helps overcome inhibitions. A lot of people are often
intimidated by opening night receptions and prefer not to attend, so, having an exhibition like this one makes it easy for people to relate to. It is more comfortable for them, and it is a good opportunity for us artists too. We get to mingle with people across all ages, go in and out of the exhibition anytime we please, sit and dine at La Brioche or have them deliver right across the hall as was the case at the Golf Gardens venue. But despite its bright points, it requires a lot of hard work to display in an informal arena than a formal gallery simply because while displaying with a gallery, the gallery looks after our paintings and takes care of the sales. In an informal arena, we have to look after everything, from talking business with clients to discussing the inspiration behind a particular piece of work and selling artwork ourselves. Hard work apart, this exhibition was an enjoyable experience for us. And, after the Sorouh Gold Gardens exhibition, we plan to have other similar exhibitions at other venues. The easiest way to make sure you do not miss out is by registering on the database of one of the artists or by following their blog. Come and visit.

THE MYSTERY OF ARABIC NUMERALS
“Captain America” has been bored lately so I offer up this history and math lesson. Don’t turn the page just yet, it’s actually interesting!
cultures quickly adopted it in favor over the Roman system. It became the world standard we use today and is the foundation of architecture and engineering.
Like most people educated in the West, I was always told from a very early age that there were two major number systems in the world, Roman numerals and Arabic numerals. The Roman numerals were not emphasized as their modern use is relegated to fancy clocks and copyright dates at the end of movie credits. All of those X’s, L’s, V’s, C’s and M’s are rarely seen anymore much less understood. They are the numerical equivalent of the extinct Latin language. There is a good reason for that which I will explain later.
The reason the Roman numeral system was flawed was that although it was a decimal system using 10 symbols (I to X=1 to 10) there was no zero to act as a place holder therefore there was no orderly way to multiply the numbers, no positional notation. XL=40 even though the X (=10) was to the left of the L (=50) it subtracted from (50-10=40) instead of neatly multiplying the number to the right 10 times as the Arabic system. This made advanced mathematics unwieldy for the Roman system and it was quickly abandoned. Arabic number…..98 (9x10+8) =Roman number…..XCVIII, (-10+100+8). Get it?
So my whole life I thought that I had been using Arabic numerals on a daily basis. My watch, my speedometer, my electronic calculator, my bank statement, etc., were all in Arabic numerals, or so I thought until moving to the Middle East.
It is good to learn something new everyday! Keeps the mind supple! Excuse me, but Captain America has to go iron some tights!
REAL Arabic numerals look nothing like the ones I grew up with. The 1 looks kind of like a 1, the 2 and 3 bear no resemblance to the ones I am used to, the 4 looks like a backwards 3, the 5 a zero, The 6 a shaky 7, the 7 a V, the 8 a tent, the 9 looks vaguely familiar and the poor zero is nothing but a dot. Another twist is that Arabic is written and read right to left but the numbers are left to right. What was ground breaking is that mathematicians from this area of the world invented the important concepts of “zero” and “positional notation” back in the day. Positional notation simply means that a number positioned to the left of another number has 10 times the value of the number to its right. The zero is a valueless place holder that scoots a number farther to the left. For example: we all know the number 23 to mean 2 tens and 3 ones, add a place holder zero in the middle and the valueless zero promotes the 2 to represent 2 hundred and 3 ones....203. My head is hurting too! This concept proved invaluable in the development of higher mathematics such as algebra and Western 28 26

What would your own album look like if you were in a band?
Here are the rules of the game: 1 - Scan the tag and use the first random Wikipedia article you get as the name of your band. 2 - Scan the tag and use the last four or five words... of the very last quote on the page as the title of your album. 3 - Scan the tag and take the third picture from Flickr 7 days, no matter what it is, and use it as your album cover. 4 - Use any of the photo maker applications on your smartphone or simply use photoshop (if you’re using the PC) or similar to put it all together. Our readers tried it out.. Tempo suggests you do too... now, all you have to do is to convince your band members to publish the one you made... of course, you have to find band members first.
