FROM THE EDITOR Hello Abu Dhabi, Successful awareness campaigns get people not just thinking – but doing! The Think Pink campaign is a great example of a powerful communication initiative that delivers more than a message (“you should perform self examination” and “be sure to get regular mammograms”) because it also offers actual examinations that are provided to the public for free. This is a campaign with teeth. Where it can really rise to the occasion is through how accessible it makes free checkups, to as many people as possible, and with minimal terms and conditions. Great start, HAAD! There are also popular one day ‘betterment’ awareness campaigns: no smoking, wear your seatbelt, paperless day etc. Some manage to achieve behavioural change through the sheer will of its champions and its believers, while the majority stagnate as fanciful campaigns that are fashionable for a short period of time – usually the length of the press conference or the photo opportunity. True attitude and behavior change comes from responsible, engaged and sincere efforts towards lasting change. Not in the size of the billboards, or the razzle dazzle of a launch event. But in sustained voices at grass root levels agreeing to work together and to gently coaxing all those around to open minds, think anew and act differently. It is a sea of slow yet tectonic change, but it will surely outlast the bright lights and the clever slogans. Get your check ups and make a difference, Abu Dhabi.

Dear Tempo, If people want to help the planet, they should reuse containers. We consume so many containers every day. Medicine, gum, detergent and so on. We should reuse as much as we can. Many of the containers are very useful for other uses. People should be creative in looking for new ways to reuse. Farid Badr

Dear Ed, I love ice skating and skiing. I come from Canada where I used to do both with my parents and sister. In the UAE the only place to ski is Ski Dubai and it’s not as great as the real thing but it’ still an OK option. I live in Abu Dhabi and I can’t wait for the Marina Mall skiing slope to open. I’m just so disappointed that its taking so long. I hope they get going on it, and get it opened soon. We’re really tired of waiting.

By Karam Bukair Our fish died on September 13, sometime between 3 and 4pm. We’ve had many fishes who have come and gone, but this one was definitely special. It was unique in the way it lived and unique in the way it died. It lived in a fish bowl on its own because every time we got it a ‘companion’ it ate the other fish. So we have another bowl where all our other three fishes live together peacefully. This loner fish lived with us for about a year and a half, which I think is a long time in fish years. It survived three waves of fish ( we tried getting it friends three times, yet all died except him… till the very end), and it entertained us with its continuous movement. My youngest brother (who’s four) would sit cross-legged in front of the fish bowl and look at it as if it was a TV. I think the fish probably would have lived even longer if it wasn’t for its injury (which we discovered only after it died). The last few days before it died we were amazed by its stunts—it swam upside down (I swear), spun vertically (as if it were part of synchronized swimming team) and kept jumping up and hitting the wall of the bowl as if to call attention to itself. I even thought to video tape it for You Tube and share this acrobat fish with the world. Then it died (upside down). And we found out that the reason it was acting so weird before it died, was because it broke one of its fins. My mother was very sad when I told her this, and said she could have taken the fish to the vet. My older brother told her it didn’t make sense to pay a Dh 500 vet bill for a fish that cost Dh 5. But my mom wasn’t amused. Anyhow, we’re all a bit sad because this fish was different. It had a rebel personality and that’s not something you normally see in a fish.

say Job hunting - Abu Dhabi style By Saira Aslam I have been in Abu Dhabi for 2 weeks now and as the new kid on the block, I think it’s time for me to get a job. Well – it’s not as easy as I thought it would be. Not that I expected anyone to just hand me a job. But seriously, there are lots of great job web sites you can post your CV onto. Volunteering is another good way to meet people and see what’s out there. I ask anyone who I meet to take a copy of my CV – even if they don’t necessarily want it. I find myself politely shoving it into their hands all the while flashing them my most winning smile. All of my friends and contacts have been great. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who might be able to help me out. And even perfect strangers are willing to come to my aid. In fact, this afternoon, a guy called my number by mistake. We started talking and he asked me what I was doing here in AD (my Canadian accent is always an ice breaker). When I told him I was hoping to find work, he asked me what my qualifications and experience were and then went on to tell me that he had a friend who works in a company that might be hiring people. This is what I love about Abu Dhabi. People are incredibly friendly and there is a real sense of community. I can’t wait to get a job and really start being a part of this unique city. PS – if you want a copy of my CV, contact the Abu Dhabi Tempo and I would be happy to discuss my qualifications and experience with you (said with my most winning smile).

What is your
FACEBOOK POLICY?
Tempo asks our avid readers, “What is your Facebook “Policy”? Who would you allow to be your friend, and who not? (Example: Would you accept your parents, teachers, ex-boy/girlfriends etc as your Facebook friend?)
Name: Denny Kristiono Age: 30 Profession: Hotelier I’m pretty much strict on my Facebook Policy!! I never add my boss or anyone in the office with a top management level position because I don’t want them reading my wall, when I rant about work. I’d allow whoever wants to be friend with me, it’s nice to know they’re looking for friends, and I’m one of them.
Name: Nandini Jose Age:22 Profession : Advertising Professional I would accept anyone I know well enough. It doesn’t matter if they are parents or teachers or anyone else. Cause I don’t think I have anything to hide. Yet. :D
6
Name: Mark Mungkey Vicente Age: 30 Profession: Digital Artist I have a lot of people on my FB friends list. I usually accept or add people I’ve recently met and those I befriend online - from facebook or other places on the net (social networks, deviantart, chats, forums, online games, muds, etc). Family, friends, colleagues, office mates, previous bosses and supervisors, all in there. I love to maintain good relationships because I hate making enemies. There is a huge risk when adding strangers and exposing the things that we do online, but hey, I’m not that deeply paranoid. I’d like to give that connection a chance. The question is ‘Why should humans blame it all on computers for not having enough features and privacy options when we are all capable of limiting what we post or do online’
Name: Muhammad Imran Somrow Age: 25 Profession: Chemical Engineering Graduate I always investigate the person, who adds me or vice versa, if she/he doesn’t share her/his phone contact number, I delete. I accept those who look out for friendship, like friends I just met, or friends of friends. I add mostly females of the same age, in case I plan to set a future date with anyone of them. I don’t add my parents, teachers, I strictly don’t add my ex-girl friends.
Name: Ave Asis I can’t accept EX’s as my friends on FB...I ignore the messages, but it’s still awkward to see them on my News Feed knowing they’re moving on..
Tempo October 16 - 31, 2010
Name: Pooja Pillai Age: 21 Profession: MBA in PR Student I would allow everyone except those who I don’t personally know or dislike. I don’t mind adding my parents/teachers/ex boyfriends. FB need not showcase all your deepest darkest secrets. It is only a representation of your real self. So unlike what most others feel, there is not much on FB that I would want to hide from friends and family.
Name: Fatema Fakhruddin Age:22 Profession: Chartered Accountant Student I wouldn’t add random people on FB. Only the ones I know well. Boyfriends.. YES. EX or former.. maybe NO. Teachers YES. Parents also YES. I don’t really like hiding things from parents so they know it all.
My facebook policy: Don’t know you, won’t add you. If I know you, you are my: 1. Friend 2. Family (parent, sibling, cousin, etc) 3. Pet goldfish (Don’t give me that look) 4. Teacher 5. An acquaintance. You are NOT my friend if you’re my: 1. Enemy from the sandbox. 2. Neighbor who almost ran over my turtle, with your new Ford. 3. Ex (DUH) 4. Arch rival (so maybe competition gets to my head a little)
Name : Jeff James Age: 23 Profession: MBA Student I actually would NOT add my parents, relatives or teachers on my list for obvious reasons .. lol. But what I suggest is to create a second profile where I can add parents or teachers etc .. absurd, but I have seen many people do it.
Name: Bearose Karmel Velarde Age:19 Profession: Student I don’t really mind adding people I KNOW PERSONALLY here on Facebook. Whether it’s my ex, co-workers or even my parents (as they are very understanding about the online world). When it comes to people I meet online, we have to at least know a thing or two about each other. I wouldn’t add people who I haven’t got a chance to talk to, random people who add me up without any “mutual friends”. I don’t want accounts made for selling products (unless they’re from my closest friends) ‘cause I hate getting tagged on paper towels, soap, and the like. I bathe, you know. HAHAHA.

Tempo chatted with DJ KABOO, before he blessed the decks and rocked the roof at the VOGUE Party at the Holiday Inn recently. TEMPO: DJ KABOO, tell us about how you got started in DJing? Simply born in Cairo under a very musical roof and developed a love for music at an early age. I was just 10 years old when I started collecting tapes, spinning records at birthdays parties. I've been told I have an ear for great R'n'B and hiphop selection. I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a DJ as I taught myself the art of DJ-ing and worked closely with production programs. I was then a guest DJ for T.G.I Fridays and the biggest club in Cairo, shortly after being discovered by a promoter who heard my underground mix CD in a club. I was ranked #1 RnBHipHop DJ in AL AHRAM Weekly Newspaper. TEMPO: How did you set the name DJ KABOO? My best friend's Italian, and she used to call me “Capo” which means "The Boss" in Italian, and later became KaBoo. TEMPO: Who inspired you to start DJing? DJ A.K the residence DJ for T.G.I Fridays who was ranked #1 in my town for 02/03 TEMPO: Who all have you worked with? What song did you start with? I hit the decks at 12am, and my first song was "This is how we do it - Montell Jordan"
TEMPO: How do you want your crowds to feel when you play? I need the crowd to feel as though "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire...." TEMPO: What was the most recent thing you were proud of? I am currently working with Fabulous Production for my debut CD to hit the UAE by December 2010. TEMPO: Who would like most to meet? Lauren Hill TEMPO: What kind of gear do you use? The Sugoi! quick dining format has combination and set meals which allow customers to mix and match various dishes. What we’ve tried: Sugoi! means Wow! in Japanese and lives up to its namesake. The dining experience is memorable offering a wide range of Japanese dishes: miso soup, sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki and teriyaki specialties. Two Bento meals: beef with rice and salad and the other a prawn robatayaki (grilled on a stick) with noodles and salad topped off with an additional miso soup, satisfies a craving for Japanese. Part Time Jobs (Abu Dhabi ,Dubai), is a popular Facebook group in the country. Tempo tracks down the talents behind this group and gets them talking. Visit Part Time Jobs on: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=114587791751&ref=search opportunities. As for me, Andrew Banoub, I am a hard working individual with good management ability, and can lead to deliver successful execution of events. I am a bold person with a vision and I like to initiate new ideas and try innovative stuff. I am a risk taker and I experiment a lot. Tempo: Who can register with Part Time Jobs Abu Dhabi?
Tempo: What is Part Time Jobs in Abu Dhabi, Dubai all about? Andrew Banoub: Part Time Jobs in Abu Dhabi, Dubai is a non profitable organization established by my friend Shahin Parvaz to help students gain experience before entering into the corporate world! Usually working part time is one of the most viable options for students and college graduates. When they come out to the market with their degrees, they find it difficult to compete with experienced candidates in the local market. We are trying to offer individuals an opportunity to start with something small without having to “tarnish” their resume. Our Facebook group doesn’t only appeal to students as such but is also for any individual seeking to earn some extra cash. Tempo: How did Part Time Jobs (Abu Dhabi, Dubai) begin? Shahin Parvaz: It started when I was in university, where it was actually difficult for students like me to find any sort of a job. Paperless Day One day wonder? Or sustainable change?
Abu Dhabi celebrated Paper Less Day recently, but has this been a one day celebration? Or a lasting movement that has changed the way people think and behave? The campaign was simple and was about boycotting paper use att work, home and from anywhere and every where. The message was simple and focused on how inspiring a simple conscious action for one day by just about 100,000 odd people could make such a considerable contribution. The idea is that if everyone could just make this simple commitment to use LESS paper then that would go a long way towards sustaining our resources. Gayatri Raghwa, Deputy Manager, Environment Education, Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi; says, “I loved this campaign for its simplicity. In true tipping point style we were able to reach out to so many without any extensive advertising or without producing tons of marketing collateral that often ends up as ‘waste’ defying the very concept of sustainability that we had set out to target in the first place “. Paperless Day was celebrated by most offices with great pomp and vigour but Tempo wanted to know what happens
after the “day” is over? EA had some interesting data but didn’t want to reveal the name of the companies. This is the feedback they received from two participating companies... Company 1 - “We didn't really have a great improvement on Paperless Day but later on it gave us an opportunity to discuss the issue with our employees and take in their remarks. We have also been using the intranet to discuss how we can reduce and improve our paper consumption internally.” Company 2 - “Paperless day has probably made an impact with 25% of our employees and staff. It has definitely generated awareness amongst the employees and they are more motivated and enthusiastic about being more conscious of their paper use. In fact we have decided to switch over to using only recycled paper for our business cards after this campaign and internally we have also decided to carry out a paperless day every few months. We are also trying to organize a switch over to recycled paper. So definitely this campaign has been a great starting point to make a difference.” 19

Light up Shopping fair on the Corniche In the great tradition of the country fair, this event offers good entertainment for the whole family. It has only been advertised in the Arabic media, which is why you don’t see too many other nationalities there. This is a shame, as it is certainly worth at least one visit. There’s an amusement park (average cost Dh 10-20 a ride) and shopping area. The shops (more like bazaars) are broken down by geographical areas (kind of like Global Village in Dubai). Pavilions include UAE, Asia and the Levant. There are great bargains, from cheap and tawdry to kitschy and crafty. There’s clothing, beauty products, jewellery, handicrafts and lots of designer knock-offs. The event is next to the Hilton Hotel on the Corniche. It lasts until November 11 and opens daily starting from 5pm.

Taking Dogs Out of the Kennel: Kahuna Finds a Temporary Home By Alma Kadragic • Photos from Abdul Rahman Strays of Abu Dhabi (SAD) is a nonprofit organization that takes care of abandoned dogs. It is run by volunteers and maintains a phone number (050-130-7392) for anyone who wants to foster, adopt, or bring in a stray dog. SAD keeps going thanks to fundraising - its next event is Saturday, October 30, from 12 noon - 5 pm at the Al Ghazal Golf Club. Bring your dog to meet other dogs and your children to enjoy special activities and to see dogs competing in agility. It›s a rare opportunity for dog owners to socialize with their pets outside of the home.

Tempo October 16 - 31, 2010
Up to now Christina and Bruce Dalcher have not been dog people. They were more used to cats, and after they arrived in Abu Dhabi three years ago, were given a cat by a friend who was leaving the country. When the four-year old cat died unexpectedly, the couple thought it might be time to try a dog.
Kahuna is playful and loves to go on long walks. He was lucky with his foster home. The Dalchers took him on 3 1/2 mile walks along a mostly shady route early each morning when it was cooler and 30 minute walks after 4 pm. From the walks, they learned Kahuna isn’t at ease with other dogs. He is very happy around adults and adjusted quickly to being interviewed and photographed. Nothing could take Kahuna away from his favorite toy, a pair of old socks that he seemed to never tire of tossing around and chewing. He was curious and explored the visitors, sniffing and checking out how much petting they might offer. And he gracefully posed next to an ancient Victrola record player - looking just like the dog featured in ads for the machine that ran in the 1950s.
Their house is an ideal setting for any dog, a villa with a large enclosed garden in the back on a quiet street in Mushrif. Because they had seen several dogs fostered by friends, they thought that might be the way to start. So they contacted Strays of Abu Dhabi. Before SAD lets a dog be adopted, they send it to at least one foster family to see how the animal behaves with adults, children, or other pets, and in some cases adjusts to apartment living. Some dogs go to several foster homes before they find a permanent home. A few never do. “We wanted to learn about having a dog,” Christina said, rather than make a long term commitment right away. She and Bruce didn’t know what breed might be best. They were looking for a dog “suitable for us - something not too much of a challenge.” The first dog they got from Strays of Abu Dhabi was Kahuna, a friendly Saluki mix, about four years old.
The Dalchers who are Americans who have spent recent years in Britain don’t know how long they’ll be staying in Abu Dhabi. Bruce is a lawyer specializing in maritime issues. He came here as a consultant on contract, but that’s over, and he is “looking around.” Given the uncertainty, the Dalchers took Kahuna for a week. The day after he was photographed, Kahuna went back to SAD, and a dachshund four month old puppy came to live at the villa. That dog too will probably be replaced by another because as Christina said, “We want to spend some time” getting to know various dogs. Everyone who comes to the event on October 30 can meet Kahuna and the 18 other dogs currently at SAD’s kennel. All are available for fostering or adoption. It’s a great occasion for anyone who’s been thinking about getting a dog . . . or a second dog to keep the first one company. 23
Hanan Al Muhairi Rides Horses, Makes Films, and Manages Knowledge By Alma Kadragic • Photos from Hanan Al Muhairi The Abu Dhabi Film Festival opened October 14 and goes on through October 23 showing 177 films from many countries in three venues: Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi Theater on the Breakfront, and Cinestar Theaters at Marina Mall. Rebranded this year to emphasize Abu Dhabi, the former Middle East Film Festival has refocused to highlight films from the region and films by young filmmakers including students in narrative and documentary categories.
Hanan Al Muhairi isn’t represented in this year’s Abu Dhabi Film Festival, but in 2009 she won an Emirates Competition Special Award for her documentary feature Our Right to Ride at the Middle East Film Festival ( above ). Directing and producing the film came naturally to Hanan because it was her own story, how she and several friends who loved horses formed the Arabyana female horse riding team in late 2006. These horse riders were pioneers because in the UAE there tended to be a feeling that riding was a sport for men, not appropriate for women. As the Arabyana profile states, one of the team’s main goals is “to represent the Emirati woman in a brighter light and change the people’s perspective against women riding horses.” They wanted 24
also “to compete locally as well as on an international level” in endurance races. That means riding 90, 100, or 120 kilometers in a race, something Hanan says she has no trouble doing. Hanan didn’t grow up riding. She started four years ago when she was 22 after a dream in which her father was a king. She doesn’t know what that meant, but it led her to start riding seriously. Two years ago Hanan got her own horse. The pure Arabian Dadari - seen on the cover arrived from France; today the horse is about eight years old and when Dadari’s not racing, he lives in a stable in Ras Al Khaimah, thanks to Sheikh Talib Bin Saqer Al Qassimi, General Commander of the RAK Police. Tempo October 16 - 31, 2010
Hanan has been lucky to get the support of Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, who like her husband is a champion rider. Princess Haya was the patron and attended the premiere of Our Right to Ride at Atlantis in April last year. Hanan and Sheikh Talib are seen in the photo on the left from the premiere.
Sheikh Mohammed himself came by in his Mercedes Benz all terrain vehicle after one of Hanan’s races to offer encouragement ( See photo below). However, Hanan’s life isn’t all horses or filmmaking. Although she is considered one of the UAE’s brightest young talents and was invited by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission to join its delegation to the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year, film is not how she makes her living, and it’s not even top of mind for her right now. Since 2007 Hanan has been working for the Dubai Police as Head of Division in the Knowledge Management Administration. Although she directed two short documentaries while an intern with the Dubai Police “to help the community,” Hanan was invited by General
Commander in Chief Khalfan Tamim to work for the new Knowledge Management Administration while she was still a student at Dubai Women’s College. Today Hanan says she enjoys her work and enjoys studying. While working, she enrolled in graduate studies at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD). On October 7, Hanan received the Master of Strategic Human Resources Management at the University’s Graduation. Now Hanan has a new goal. She’d like to make more films, but first she wants to enroll in the Ph.D. program at UOWD. “When you have a doctoral degree,” said Hanan, “your vision changes. After the master’s degree, I have like 3D vision. It helps to research and do new things.”

Art-ICULATE By Ellaine Fatima
Presenting Laurel Moore “I would say I love to experience life myself and live the moment. I easily get caught in the immediacy of the beauty of the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Hence I suppose Music and Art are natural passions of mine and I have been involved in them for all of my life. I set myself challenges to try to better my abilities and am always moving my own goal posts! I think that most of us have a natural path and that our lives are about finding that path of purpose, whilst trying to make the world a better place. “I am a Contemporary and Traditional Artist, Musician and Jazz Singer. Each is an equal part, so I have to kind of circulate between these interests - for like demanding children each personality requires full attention! I have my own art website and sell my commissions worldwide to customers who find my email or request an artwork via word-of-mouth. I also exhibit locally at festivals and charity events. As a singer and musician have now formed my own group ‘OneLadyJazz’ and hope to be performing again soon. I also write my own music and am setting up my own home recording studio this year. “I am inspired by natural beauty and also the beauty of architecture. But I think beauty can be found in so many unexpected places: in the look of a loved-one, in a once-loved place, in the feelings that we hold dear. That moment can pvaass so quickly that I often like to photograph these moments to try and capture it with my paintbrush. I use a photograph as a basis only, a jumping-off point to ensure the basic structure is correct first - just like an artisan who would use all tools at his disposal. A camera is not something to feel ashamed of. The rest of the story is up to me to convey. “I’ve always loved the English Turner landscapes. They seemed so ahead of their time - capturing the raw natural beauty and changes of nature. And all that without a camera! I always wished to paint like one of the great Classical painters like Rembrandt, or Titian, and although many have said I have a very classical style to try and paint in a certain way it just never worked out for me. I think finding your own natural style or voice is what is important. “My art is part of who I am. So, it changes and grows with me. My thirty or so paintings in my home tell my journey in paintings. One painting shows our beloved dog Axle enjoying a snooze, not long before he died - another my son, deep in thought before he decided to leave home. So, it’s very difficult for me to see my artwork objectively and comment on what sets my artwork apart. I’ll leave that for others to decide. I suppose what is consistent is my passion for painting. “

Yank insandland by Randy Parker
Humans are very versatile and flexible creatures. These facts explain how ancient cultures in such diverse areas as the Arctic and our own Arabian desert thrived. In the last few years I have lived and worked Abu Dhabi. I did some adapting of my own to this country and culture. Now I hardly notice the everyday things that would have shocked, irritated, or even thrilled me when I was a rookie. 7. Surprised at all the old, dented and cheap cars on the road back home 8. Trying to regain comprehension of that “funnysounding” American accent 9. My sweat glands are stuck wide open after years in the UAE heat and humidity, I now shiver at 27 C 10 “Middle finger” rights are restored for use in disputes, (but better not as the opponent may have a gun) Some things will feel the same like KFC for example. But the longer I am in Abu Dhabi the further I drift from my original culture. That is not a bad thing as adaptation makes me more comfortable here as time goes by and when I do return home, it will seem as exotic and new as when I first set foot on these shores.
Randy’s blog can be found on your mobile phone.
I realize that when the time comes for my return to the star spangled arms of Uncle Sam, I will have some reverse-adapting to do. Some things in the US, will seem foreign to me upon my repatriation so I compiled a 10 most potentially disruptive personal issues list:

1. Force myself to actually take speed limit and stop signs seriously again 2. Required to get reacquainted with “The Taxman” and pay my legal burden (ugh!) 3. Metric versus Imperial measures, always a struggle for me, back to miles, yards, feet and inches 4. Possibility of getting arrested because my shisha pipe is assumed to be “drug paraphernalia” 5. The eerie sense of an important bathroom fixture gone missing as my toilet looks lonely 6. My terror of drinking tap water must be conquered or I will be considered a wimp 27
Emerging
TALENT
Story and Photos by Ellaine Fatima
Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) came up with a competition called “Emerging Talents where DFW provides a unique platform for young, amateur designers from across the region to showcase their fashion skills. Tempo met up with the finalists who gave a sneak preview of their designs that would be showcased at the DFW Spring/ Summer 2011 which will be held between 24th until 28th October.
Nasrine DECHACHE
In this issue we present three new talents.
Age: 27
Born and raised in France, Paris from Algerian parents. I hold a master degree in marketing and currently work as marketing manager. I had the chance to travel since I was young and therefore developed a very open mind. I definitely think that being multi cultured is an asset in this world and feel blessed for having been able to discover different cultures. My Style: Casual and chic, Arabic inspired and Algerian influenced. My inspiration came from my summer vacation in Algeria, when I was a kid. Summer there is the wedding season, therefore, a lot of women wore the traditional Karakou or the Sarouel. The French flair that you see in Paris, where most women have this classy thing that you cannot describe, is incorporated in my designs which are casual and chic at the same time. My designs are minimalist, and I believe in accessorizing with a neon accents. My colour palette is warm colours and I focus on volume and flow using chiffon and jersey (which is perceived as a cheap material but can be made to look classy)
It is beyond amazing to be shortlisted!! I am so happy! It is very rewarding to see that people actually understand the message you are trying to pass on through your clothes and my message was to be different, daring and show my personality. What I expect from DFW is to live a wonderful human experience, to show my work and be able to launch my brand : MONTAIGNE. After the show I hope that I will be able to distribute my brand on the local market. Then I plan to develop my collection around different concepts ie a more casual line and a line dedicated to evening wear and so on. I have a lot to show!
Nova Krishnan Age: 26
I am an architect born and raised in Dubai, but from India (Kerala, Kannur). I started out modeling since the age of 13, and since then I was completely in love with fashion. I used to be the benchgirl at the back of the class and I would sit and draw designs. I graduated as an architect, which drew me back to my passion, into fashion designing. 28
Tempo October 16 - 31, 2010
I initially started out with bridal designs. My theory is to make the person beautiful rather than blown out with over design. My designs are intricate, Arabic and Indian influenced with Greek infusions. I love trails, and flowy dresses that accentuate height and cover up flaws. It’s all about “cuts”. My designs are inspired by the traditional sari of India, but my collection is the contemporary version of it. I concentrate on the flow, using materials such as silk and ‘chicken’ embellished fabric with intricate embroidery using colours that I play around with. Ideally my design aim is to bring out femininity and accentuate curves while ‘contouring out’ flaws. DFW is awesome, as it’s my first platform to showcase my designs. I’ve always been the backstage girl. It’d be nice for a change to be in front and see my designs on stage. My USP would be that, I’d be showcasing Indian Arabic fusion. Besides planning to get buyers, I dream to go international. In four months I’ve achieved so much, in two years I can pursue my dreams.
Susan Jacob Age: 26
I left India (Kerala, Cochin) where I was born and raised, to pursue a degree in the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Dubai and the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. College experience gave me invaluable lessons about art and fashion and consequently revealed a new dimension of an industry I began to love. I hope to emerge as an artist, a designer with a unique style, to impart knowledge and technique, possibly inspiring younger designers. As a designer, I strive to be open to all sorts of creative concepts. In 2006, I secured an opportunity to revamp the staff uniforms of Dubai International Airport (DNATA). My style focuses on versatility, and a strong cross-cultural influence is evident throughout my collection. I focus on the person’s silhouette. I play with proportions to match any size and shape. Lace of vintage lingerie, elegant dressing gowns, flowing ruffles, corsets, sheer hosiery…are what inspire me. My designs feature black and pale pink with a lot of lace, and I use lots of Jersey stretchable material and satin and corset boning. I am excited about DFW and being shorlisted in the final six. It would hurt my ego, if I wasn’t. I have done fashion shows during college, but this would be my first time I am launching my own label “Susan Jacob”. I expect women at the DFW to be satisfied with what they see and go, “Wow, I want to wear that!” I think I am qualified enough to expand as I hope to get lots of buyers and to mass produce my designs. 29
