ASSALAAMUALAYKUM We begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious and Most Merciful. Indeed all praise is for Allah, may His peace and blessings be upon His Final Messenger, Muhammad sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Allah subhanahu wa ta’la says in Surah Zumur, verse 9: “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” Knowledge along with belief, is the core of our religion. Therefore, how can those who have knowledge in the rules of the Shari’ah (Islamic Law), the meaning and implications of AshShahadah, the wisdom behind the various rules of the religion with regards to the permissible and the impermissible, the life story of the Messenger of Allah and knowledge in what will occur after death, such as the torment in the grave, the hardships of the Day of Resurrection, the bounties in Paradise and the torment in Hellfire, how can they be compared to those who do not have knowledge in such aspects? This issue explains the virtues of knowledge aswell as the dangers along the path to paradise. Wisdom preceeding knowledge and advice from the great scholar, Imam Shaf’ii [RH] on knowledge Three months since the last issue have passed and Noor Ul Islam has been continuing to provide all sorts of events and activities for our community alhamdulilah. Inside you will find updates of our services and events, as well as informative articles written by members of the local community. Our Updates pages include information about our dawah activities including IAW along with updates for our charity activities including our annual dinner. Our regular In Focus feature in this issue focuses on our efforts during Islam Awareness Week. We also continue with our familiar sections: Kidz Zone and IslamQA. In Focus: Islam Awareness

There was a buzz of activity and excitement during Islam Awareness Week at Noor Ul Islam Primary School in Dawlish Road, Leyton. Pupils, staff and parents had a fantastic time organising events and activities as part of their contribution to Islam Awareness Week, which takes place every year in November. Many events are held across the borough each year to raise awareness of Islam as a religion and way of life for its followers. This year staff of Noor Ul Islam Primary School felt it would be a great opportunity to open its doors to the wider community to share the teachings of Islam as well as share some of the excellent work which goes on within the school. Sometimes there is a misconception of what an Islamic school is all about, comments such as “Oh! This looks just like a real school!” are not uncommon! So it was especially rewarding for staff to hear their school described by visitors throughout the week as “a warm and inviting place with a family feel.” The children worked enthusiastically over the week to produce their own exhibition on Islam, which included work from Reception children all the way through to Year 6. Topics included ‘Why Islam teaches us to look after the environment’ to ‘Islamic contributions in Science’ and ‘How to honour and respect the rights of others in society.’ The children’s exhibition portrayed a range of work from writing and art work to a power point presentation on Islamic History. Parents were invited to bring along a guest to view the exhibition and talk to the children about their work. Organisations who often work with the school were also invited to send along a representative to visit and

take a look at the children’s work. The school was happy to welcome members of the local Police team, Waltham Forest Council, London Wildlife Trust, Leyton Library, neighbouring schools Dawlish Primary and Newport Primary, as well as Whipps Cross Hospital and not to forget the local neighbours! The adults were very impressed with the children’s willingness to talk about their exhibitions and the confidence with which even some of the very young children spoke! All visitors were treated to a wonderful performance by the Year 6 class of a short play highlighting the status and respect Islam gives to the elderly. A common thread which runs through all of society but sadly can often be neglected as one teacher from Dawlish Primary School so aptly put. She was very impressed by the performance and summed it up by saying, “The message was given so clearly and to the point, a very good lesson.” The visitors from Dawlish Primary also included the pupils from their Year 5, it was a great opportunity for the children of both schools to interact and share their experiences over cookies and juice! Guests were particularly impressed with some of the art work produced by the children. The range of artwork was spectacular. For some it was the tile paintings which caught the eye, for others it was the cards with Islamic calligraphy or the beautifully painted canvases with symmetrical designs. The artwork had been produced with special enthusiasm as the end of the week culminated in an art exhibition in which the children’s artwork was up for sale! Many children enjoyed the thrill of being able to quote their own price

for their piece! Alongside the art exhibition there was the famous Noor Ul Islam Primary School’s Food and Cake sale! Always a great place to treat yourself, friends and family to a feast of mouth watering savoury and sweet delights! The sales raised over £600 which will be donated to the Whipps Cross Hospital’s Big Push Appeal, to raise funds for the maternity units within the hospital. Children from the school are encouraged throughout the year to put into action the importance Islam places on charity and helping those in need, and the Whipps Cross Appeal seemed a worthy cause to donate to. All in all it was a great week and everyone adults and children alike were rather sad to see it come to a close. But as one visitor so rightly put it, often Islam is simply misunderstood by so many due to its misrepresentation by a few, so really we should not just have Islam Awareness Week once a year, but every day should be an Islam Awareness Day! To view pictures of the exhibition and find out more about the week, why not visit the school’s website on www.nuips.org

Islam Awareness Week 14th November – 21st November 2009 Noor Ul Islam Trust held a number of activities during Islam Awareness Week in order to bring our beautiful religion to others. On 14th November, Noor Ul Islam, together with other members of the Waltham Forest Council of Mosques attended a marquee in Walthamstow Square. Though it was a very wet and windy day, it is estimated that over 1000 people visited the marquee that day.

Our mosque open day then took place on 15th November. The public were invited in for a hot lunch, to see Muslims praying and to view our Islamic exhibition. A talk was then given to the public at Leytonstone Library during the evening of 16th November. Shaykh Mohammed Abdulle and Br Yusuf Hansa presented a talk on Islam and answered questions from the audience. Two story-telling events took place at Wood Street and Walthamstow libraries, specifically for under fives.

The story telling sessions introduce basic stories for youngsters from different backgrounds. Finally, the Noor Ul Islam Think Tank launched its report called “Vision 2020 Muslims making a positive contribution to Waltham Forest”. This report highlighted how the Think Tank and the Trust as a whole believes that Muslims in its host borough can help improve the lives of all its residents. The Think Tank report has received praise from many Muslims and Non-Muslims for being innovative in its approached and thorough in its recommendations made to the community.

Knowledge The path to paradise by Abu Muslim Knowledge Mandates Action

In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, we seek his help and we seek his forgiveness. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet [salAllahu alayhi wa salam], the anbiya, the shuhadaa and all those that follow him until the Day of Judgement. The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: Whoever treads a path of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to jannah. [Muslim] Seeking knowledge is a must for every Muslim, whether they be male or female. How can someone worship Allah if they do not know how to? How can someone do what is obligatory upon them if they do not know what is obligatory? How can someone please Allah [subhanahu wa ta’la] if they do not know what pleases Him? How can someone follow the messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) if they do not know what he did and said? The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim. [Ibn Majah] In Islam, knowledge comes before action; there can be no action without knowledge, as Allah [aza wa jal] says in Surah Mohammed, ayah 19: “So know, that Laa ilaaha ill-Allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women”.

8

But after knowledge, must come action. There is no goodness in knowledge which is not confirmed by action, or words which are not confirmed by deeds.

“Whoever treads the path of Knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to paradise” [Hadeeth Saheeh Muslim]

As Allah [subhanahu wa ta’la] says in surah Saff: “O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do.” Seeking knowledge opens the path to paradise but in order for one to reach the final destination along the path and enter Allah’s pleasure and paradise, the knowledge has to be accompanied by sincerity, belief and action. Knowledge is like the roadmap to paradise; you know where you want to go, you have the route all worked out but you can’t actually get there because you have no means. The journey requires three different modes of transport; ikhlaas, emaan and action. Seeking knowledge comes with its dangers. Along with action, knowledge also requires sincerity. In a part of a longer hadeeth, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, the prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: Three categories

of people will be the first to be thrown into Hell-Fire: a scholar who taught people merely to be praised as a scholar;… [Muslim] We may find someone who is really eager to seek knowledge, attends all the courses and listens to lectures upon lectures however whenever they look into themselves, they realise that the real reason for this eagerness is to show off to the people and to attain praise of the people. Or it may be that they want to be known amongst their friends and family as the “practicing” one or wants to gain knowledge in order to win arguments over people. Or sometimes, they may learn it simply out of routine or being forced by their parents or due to peer pressure. The Prophet [salAllahu alayhi wa salam] said: “Whoever acquires knowledge which should be sought for the sake of Allah, but he only learns it in order to attain some worldly goal, he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dawud] Sincerity is something that constantly needs to be checked. We may have performed an action sincerely for the sake of Allah one day, but performed an action to be seen by others, another day. Before we start any action, ask ourselves are we really doing it for the sake of Allah? Even during an action re check our intention to ensure we are doing it for the sake of Allah. Shaytaan will constantly attack

Knowledge - The Path to Paradise cont.

knowledge

the path to paradise us and try to make us insincere as he knows our actions will be fruitless without sincerity. Allah [subhanahu wa ta’la] says in Surah Zumur, ayah 3: “So worship Allah, making religion pure for Him (only).” Sincerity is also required when reading or learning the book of Allah. We must ensure we follow the recitation with action. As knowledge mandates action, recitation of the Quran mandates implementation. All our actions, whether they be seeking knowledge or praying salah five times a day, should be sincerely for the sake of Allah. If we do not do it for Allah’s sake, then who else will reward us on the Day of Judgement? Imagine coming to Allah on the Day of Judgement, on the day when everyone’s deeds will be accounted for, when every single action we did will be made clear to us; only to find out that we will not get rewarded for any of it as we did not do it for the sake of Allah! Imagine the disappointment we will face. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: “The two feet of the servant will not cease (from standing before Allah) on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about four things: On his life and how he spent it; On his knowledge and what he did for it; On his wealth and where he earned it and how he spent it; And on his body and in what way he utilised it.”[Tirmidhi] From this hadeeth, knowledge of Islam stems from all four points of which we will be accounted for.

Only through knowledge will we know how we are commanded by Allah to spend our lives. Only through knowledge will we know if our wealth is earned in a halal manner and if we spent it in that which is permissible. Only through knowledge will we know if our body is used in a correct manner to please our Lord. Islam is a complete way of life, from the way we eat to the way we worship, Islam has set guidelines for us to live our lives. Islam teaches us how to live our life so that we may be happy, enjoy it and do what is pleasing to our Lord. Who knows what is the best for us other than the one who created us? If someone is studying to be a doctor, they study for years and years and during that time they are also doing practical lessons in order to actually implement the theory side of what they learn. There is no use in learning all the medicines and techniques if you are not going to help or treat any patients. Likewise there is no benefit in learning Islam without implementing the knowledge and applying it to your every day life. Is not the one who collects books of knowledge just like the one who collects gold and silver? Is not the one who has an intense craving for them just like the one who yearns and longs for gold and silver? Is not the one who is deeply in love with them just like the one who treasures gold and silver? So just as there is no benefit in wealth unless it is spent, then likewise, there is no benefit in knowledge unless it is acted upon

and its obligations carried out. Islam is a course that every single Muslim has to enrol on. The duration of the course: lifetime until death. The curriculum is set by: Allah [subhanahu wa ta’la] and the course is taught by: the messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa salam). But this specific course has the ultimate prize when you graduate; Jannah. However in order to graduate from the school of life and Islam, one needs to implement all that they learn as they go along and live their life according to the rules and regulations set out. This is since knowledge is a tree and action is its fruit. And one can never be considered knowledgeable so long as he doesn’t act upon what he knows.

“Islam is a

course that every Muslim has to enrol in” Therefore, let us examine ourselves and take advantage of our time. For this world is short, the (time for) departure is near, the road is hazardous, the danger is great, the one who takes himself to account knows that Allah, the Most High, is watching, and to Him is the (final) return. The tabieen (someone who saw the sahabah), Sufyaan ibn Thawri (rahimahullah) said: The excellence of knowledge is that it causes a person to fear and obey Allah. Otherwise it is just like any other thing.

BUILDING BRIDGES: NOOR UL ISLAM PRIMARY SCHOOL By Sarah Jones If new plans to build an independent Muslim only school in Southampton are approved, it will be the first of its kind to be built south of London. SARAH JONES visited one of England’s few Muslim schools to find out what Southampton can expect. What she discovered may surprise you. HADEETH QUDSI [SAHEEH MUSLIM] - THE PROPHET [SALALLAHU ALAYHI WA SALAM] SAID: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) has angels who roam about seeking out gatherings in which Allah’s name is being invoked: they sit with them and fold their wings round each other, filling that which is between them and between the lowest heaven. When [the people in the gathering] depart, [the angels] ascend and rise up to heaven. He (the Prophet p.b.u.h.) said: Then Allah (mighty and sublime be He) asks them - [though] He is most knowing about them: From where have you come? And they say: We have come from some servants of Yours on Earth: they were glorifying You (Subhana llah), exalting you (Allahu akbar), witnessing that there is no god but You (La ilaha illa llah), praising You (Al-Hamdu lillah), and asking [favours] of You. He says: And what do they ask of Me? They say: They ask of You Your Paradise. He says: And have they seen My Paradise? They say: No, O Lord. He says: And how would it be were they to have seen My Paradise! They say: And they ask protection of You. He says: From what do they ask protection of Me? They say: From Your Hell-fire, O Lord. He says: And have they seen My Hell-fire? They say: NO. He says: And how would it be were they to have seen My Hell-fire: They say: And they ask for Your forgiveness. He (the Prophet p.b.u.h) said: Then He says: I have forgiven them and I have bestowed upon them what they have asked for,and I have granted them sanctuary from that from which they asked protection. He (the Prophet p.b.u.h) said: They say: O Lord, among them is So-and-so, a much sinning servant, who was merely passing by and sat down with them. The ‘Bush Homeopaths’ Sr Sameena Azam - Member of the Noor Ul Islam Women Advisory Board and Homeopath recounts her recent humanitarian visit to The Gambia The Gambia is located in sub-tropical Africa, bordering both sides of the Senegambia river. We are working with a local independent Islamic charity that currently is attempting to provide a number of deprived communities first with a well initially, then clothing and foods to supplement their obvious malnutrition and subsequently opportunities for self-sufficiency, such as equipment and funds to set up a bakery, a donkey and cart for transportation and equipment for setting up a local school, Alhamdullilah. As homeopaths we were asked to come and treat some of these people who are generally suffering from the long- term effects of malnutrition, as well as lack of We treated hundreds of people over 5 days on 6 different sites, mashaAllah. Each place we visited had its particular issues; however the most glaring problems were those of long term malnutrition. Our circumstances were thus that we had limited time and resources to treat the overwhelming numbers of people waiting for treatment. A lot of precious time was lost due to unreliable and challenging transport – on one day 3 hours were spent in the blazing sun waiting to get on the ferry– treating the logistics officer at the port while waiting did ensure our speedier crossing, (Allah swt knows best, subhanAllah, He is the All Knowing and All Seeing!).

medical care and/or the means to pay for it. The communities we visited had no running water, no electricity, no gas and no sanitation to speak of. It seems the worse places are the Dara’s (madressa) which also are known as orphanages, where children who are orphans or can’t be taken care of by other family member s are sent to learn the Quran but are also used to work in the fields. It is not uncommon for people to go days without food. Living conditions are appalling by our standards – it is particularly heart breaking to see the children. There is no dental care or eye tests - children who have weak eyesight simply do not go to school.

Clothes and food were also distributed to each site during our visit. In one particular site we visited, one of the older boys received a ‘hooded’ jacket from the container we sent. He was so overjoyed that he paced the area repeatedly saying ‘I’m not going to be cold tonight, Alhumdullillah!’ The beds of these children consists of rocks and tree branches put together covered by a thin cloth. Alhumdullilah our families in the UK have plenty to be thankful for. We are planning to go out again in April, inshallah, for reviews, further treatments and to train a person on each site in some basic homeopathy. Joining us in April we have volunteer students, Homeopaths and general helpers also joining the team in April. If you would like to help in any way you may contact me via the Noor Ul Islam Trust office on 020 8558 0786.

Wisdom Before Knowledge Umm Muslim

“And

when he attained his full manhood, We gave him wisdom and knowledge, and thus do we reward the righteous” {Quran 12:22}

Yusuf’s father, Yaqoob, plays a great role in the development and enriching of his son’s character, and the effect of this tarbiyyah clearly echoes throughout the surah. In the ayahs above we witness an intimate conversation between son and father. Many youngsters nowadays prefer to share their secrets with friends and peers, leaving us to wonder at the great level of Many of us aspire to pursue and increase our knowledge. trust between Yusuf and Yaqoob. Whether it be in matters of deen, academically, or in other aspects of life. However, if you look closely at the The two pieces of advice he gives his son are equally above ayah, you will find another word placed before fascinating: the word knowledge; wisdom. It is no coincidence that Allah mentions the word wisdom before He mentions Firstly, rather than channelling feelings of hatred the word knowledge, and this in fact is reflected in within Yusuf (may Allah’s peace be upon him) more than one ayah in the Quran such as “Call to the towards his brothers, he instead directs it towards the way of your Lord with wisdom and good preaching...” shaitaan. Rather than speaking in specific terms, like Hence, it can be concluded that wisdom then is of higher value and authority than knowledge. Knowledge is having information, whilst wisdom is acting upon that knowledge in a calculated manner. It is said the Khawaarij (one of the deviant sects) had much knowledge. However, they lacked the wisdom, hence their acquired knowledge was in the wrong place. The results of their actions - the slaughtering and killingspeak for themselves.

your brothers this, your brothers that, Yaqoob speaks in general terms, avoiding ill talk and the arousing of any ill feelings.

Secondly, Yaqoob reminds Yusuf of the nobility of his family and who his forefathers were, deeply rooting his identity and giving him pride in his family lineage. Yusuf has no identity crisis like many of teenagers today. Despite the traumatic events he goes through later (including separation, deception, slavery and imprisonment) the importance of his identity, his trust The Prophet Muhammad (Allah‘s peace and blessings in Allah, and his wisdom to know that whatever comes be upon him) said, “Wisdom is the lost property of the from Allah is for the best, gives him the strength to believer. Take it wherever you happen to find it.” be continue having faith in Allah’s decree and the patience to persevere in the face of adversity. Another example of the power of wisdom is demonstrated in the wisdom in tarbiyyah of Yaqoob May Allah increase us in wisdom and knowledge. (may Allah’s peace be upon him) In Surah Yusuf, Ameen. “Yusuf said to his father, “O my father I saw eleven stars and the sun and moon I saw them prostrating “(Allah is all knowing) - ...granting to me”. He said, “O my son! Relate not your dream to your brothers, that they will arrange a plot wisdom unto whom He wills: and against you. Verily Shaitaan is a clear enemy of whoever is granted wisdom has man. And thus your lord will choose you and teach indeed been granted abundant you the interpretation of dreams, and perfect his favour on you and the offspring of Yaqoob, as he good.” {Quran 2:268} perfected it before on your fathers Ibrahim and Ishaaq. Verily your Lord is all-knowing, allwise.” {12: 4-6}

The Virtues of Knowledge Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” (Quran - 39:9) From the Quran

This is a rhetorical question, there was no response as the aim of this question is affirmation. This issue is one that no one differs in; no one disagrees that ‘those who know are not equal to those who do not know.

• In the Noble Quran, Allah says: {…Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge...} [Al-Mujaadilah 58:11]

Allah clarifies in this verse that He will raise the believers in levels, those granted knowledge will be raised many levels, and high levels. •

Another verse is the saying of Allah {…Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses). } [Az-Zumar 39:9]

From the Sunnah

Another saying of Allah is: {…It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear (khashyah) Allah…} [Faatir 35:28] What is khashyah, which is mentioned in the verse? Khashyah is the fear of someone you know. So if fear comes together with knowing the one you fear, then this is called khashyah. The `Ulamaa’ are those who best know Allah and His Capability and this is why Allah described them as having khashyah of Him.

The Messenger of Allah also said, “Whoever • In another hadeeth, the Messenger of Allah said, “The student of knowledge (or the Allah wants good for, He gives him fiqh seeker of knowledge), everything will ask (understanding) of the Deen.” [Bukharee]. Also forgiveness for him even the fish in the ocean.” from the understanding of this hadeeth is that ‘those whom Allah does not wish good for, then He does not give them understanding in the religion’. So • The Messenger of Allah also said, “There is not a people who gather in a house from the houses of everyone should be keen to seek knowledge and Allah (a masjid) to recite the Book of Allah or study to gain an understanding of the religion in order it except that calmness will descend upon them to be from those whom Allah wishes good for. and mercy would cover them and they would be surrounded by the angels and Allah will mention • The Messenger of Allah also said, “Whoever them with good to those near to Him.” [Muslim] traverses a path in order to gain knowledge, then Allah will make the path to Jannah easy for him.” [Tirmidhee]. So if you go to a masjid for a lecture or • Another hadeeth of the Messenger of Allah is: “Allah would say at the end of the gathering of a class, then it is as though you are going towards those who gathered to gain knowledge, ‘Get up! Imam Shaaf’ee On Knowledge

Imam al Shaaf’ee [rahmatullahi alayh] Someone asked me: What is [legal] knowledge and how much should men know of it?

by the public, and is subject to different interpretations arrived at by analogy.

Shaaf’ee replied: Legal knowledge is of two kinds: one is for the general public, and no sober and mature person should be ignorant of it.

He asked: Is legal knowledge of this kind as obligatory as the other, or is it not obligatory so that he who acquires such knowledge performs a supererogatory act, and he who neglects it falls not into error? Or, is there a third kind, derived from a narrative or analogy?

He asked: For example? Shaaf’ee replied: For example, that the daily prayers are five, that men owe it to Allah to fast the month of Ramadan, to make the pilgrimage to the [Sacred] House whenever they are able, and to pay the Zakah in their estate; that He [Allah] has prohibited usury, adultery, homicide, theft, the drinking of wine, and everything] of that sort which He has obligated men to comprehend, to perform, to pay in their property, and to abstain from [because] He has forbidden it to them. This kind of knowledge may be found textually in the Book of Allah, or may be found generally among the people of Islam. The public relates it from the preceding public and ascribes it to the Messenger of Allah, nobody ever questioning its ascription or its binding force upon them. It is the kind of knowledge which admits of error neither in its narrative nor in its interpretation; it is not permissible to question it. He asked: What is the second kind? Shaaf’ee replied: It consists of the detailed duties and rules obligatory on men, concerning which there exists neither a text in the Book of Allah, nor regarding most of them, a sunnah. Whenever a sunnah exists in this case, it is of the kind related by few authorities, not

Shaaf’ee replied: There is a third kind [of knowledge]. He asked: Will you explain it, give its source, and state what portion of it is obligatory, and on whom it is binding and on whom it is not binding? Shaaf’ee replied: The public is incapable of knowing this kind of knowledge, nor can all specialists obtain it. But those who do obtain it should not all neglect it. If some can obtain it, the others are relieved of the duty of obtaining it; but those who do obtain it will be rewarded. He asked: Will you cite a narrative or any other relevant information as a basis for using analogy? Shaaf’ee replied: Allah has imposed the need to strive [as laid down in His Book and uttered by His Prophet’s tongue]. He stressed the calling [of men to fulfil] the [duty] as follows: Allah has bought from the believers their lives and their possessions for [the gift of] Paradise. They fight in the way of Allah; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise binding upon Allah in the Torah and Gospel and the Quran; and who fulfils his covenant better than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have

made with Him. That is the mighty triumph [Quran. 9: 112] He asked: Are there examples other than the this? [Shaaf’ee] replied: Yes, such as the funeral and burial prayers, the performance of which should not be neglected; but men are not all under the obligation to attend to their performance, for those who perform them will relieve those who do not from falling into error. In the same [category falls the duty to] reply to a salutation. For Allah said: When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with a better one, or return it. Verily Allah keeps account of everything [Quran. 4: 88] The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “He who is standing shall greet hin who is sitting. If [only] one replies to a greeting, he would fulfil [the duty] on behalf of the others.” These are merely intended to mean that a reply must be made. So the response of the few fulfils the duty for all who are obligated to reply, for the [collective] response is sufficient. So far as I have been informed, the Muslims have continued to act as I have stated, from the time of the Prophet to the present. Only a few men must know the law, attend the funeral service, strive in His way and respond to greeting, while others are exempt. So those who know the law, strive in His cause, attend the funeral service, and respond to a greeting will be rewarded, while others do not fall into error since a sufficient number fulfil the [collective] duty.

The Reality of Drugs What I’ve seen in the drugs field

By Zeeshan Hashmi a substance misuse outreach worker for the Qalb Centre We have been totally wrapped up in our own lives and cocooned. Hidden from what exists in society or we have chosen to hide ourselves away from it. We as a community have a ‘sweep under the carpet’ attitude or ‘ostrich’ mentality of burying our heads in the sand and running from many of the social issues that exist on our doorstep. However, there are very few who actually are striving to do something about it. Only up until last Ramadan I was like those who I’ve mentioned. Then I started working with The Qalb Centre, a drug counselling and outreach service based in Walthamstow but working in and around the entire borough. Allah Subhanahu wata’ala says in the Quran“O you who believe ! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones and (divination by) arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. Avoid (such abominations) that you may prosper.” (5:90) This is exactly what intoxicants are, they are the handiwork of shaytan. I have seen this first hand while working with people who’s lives have been taken over by the evilness of drugs and alcohol to such an extent that they have become slaves to the bottle, pipe or syringe. Their whole day is absorbed by thoughts of getting their ‘fix’ by raising money, stealing, begging, street crime, working in prostitution and stopping at nothing until their body and mind is satisfied by that which they worship! Now it’s easy for many to write this off if it is happening to other communities or people, but when it gets closer to home then people we start waking up. What would be your feelings if your son or daughter came home smelling of alcohol or wanting extra money without explaining what it’s for? Or in extreme cases what if your daughter or son said they hear voices and started to develop symptoms of psychological problems. In not all cases are people the victims of peer pressure. Their home environment might be the cause of them seeking peace in the bottom of a bottle, syringe or crack pipe. It may be the case that they are being abused in some way by their fathers or brothers or beaten by their husbands and fathers. These are some of the cases that I have come across. This is just a lighter version of the reality

20

There are many Muslims in our Borough and in other locations around the UK who are doing unspeakable acts just to raise money for their habit. A number of young Muslim women are being impregnated by with their drug dealer and still taking drugs while pregnant, so what kind of effect is this going to have on the foetus as it develops? What fault is it of his/hers that life should start in this way? When the parents are faced with these issues, Why is it that we sweep it under the carpet and don’t deal with the issue head on? We brush it off as a phase our kids are going through or condone it if they are giving us the money ‘earned’ from selling drugs and ruining many lives. We need to stand up together and collectively make an effort to address this issue! Not everyone is born with the ability to deal with all issues. If we have a medical issue only certain home remedies will be beneficial until we refer the case on to a professional, so why do we not refer drug related cases onto those who can help? Would you wait until your child starts hearing voices or is impregnated out of wedlock before you take it seriously? We are always shouting at our children for not being obedient to us and their coming home late after nights out with their friends. We don’t bother to communicate with them but instead we only speak down to them and hit them if they speak back to us. Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever amongst you sees an evil, he must change it with his hand; if he is unable to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is unable to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest form of Faith”. [Muslim]. This hadith encourages us to make a change, not by beating, abusing and bullying. Our job is to stop things with our hands by removing the harm physically, counsel them through speech and find out the problem but if we simply let it pass and not stop it then this is a reflection of our imaan which is the weakest. Allah protect us from that. Ameen. The solution to the problem is often quite simple but yet we make it so complicated. We need to reach out to our children and address the issue, there is help out there but all we need to do is break our pride and the ‘dishonour’ it will bring on the

family. If someone is addicted to a drug is it a medical issue? Let me ask you what is more dishonourable, to let everyone know that your son or daughter is getting help for a medical issue or your son is in prison for drug dealing or murder or your daughter is known in the community for sleeping around for money? All of this because our family honour is more important. Alhamdulillah for the opportunity to see what I’ve seen. I have met people who are in seriously difficult situations and they have been shunned by society. They are your next door neighbours and friends, they walk past you in the supermarket and queue behind you in the bank and they need your help. The Muslim community is suffering from every angle. This is not a new disease but it is a problem which the older generation don’t know how to deal with and therefore it makes things worse. As Muslims we have an obligation upon each other as Allah says : “The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma`ruf, and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar. (9:71) We need to observe the best etiquettes with people and invite everyone to paradise especially those in vulnerable states as I have mentioned. They and their families need our help. Everyone is born upon the fitra and unfortunately we need to assist people in finding theirs again. The obligation does not stop there; we take it a step further and help to get them to turn back to Allah as He Subhananhu wata’ala says “Say: O `Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful”. (39:53) No matter how bad things are, know that Allah will forgive anything except making partners with him. A person who is involved in this habit needs love and help not the opposite. There is always time for change and by the tawfeeq of Allah we have opportunities to assist people in changing their lives and inshaAllah the reward is with Allah. If you or anyone you know is suffering from what I have touched upon, please do get in touch with us. We are 100% confidential service contact us on 07507668063 or 02085215223.

ISLAM Question & Answers all answers taken from http://www.islamqa.com

Knowledge Special Fearing Allah with Knowledge

Q: What is the meaning of the verse: “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah” [Faatir 35:28]? A: Praise be to Allah. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah” [Faatir 35:28] The subject here is al-‘ulamaa’ (those who have knowledge). They are the ones who fear Allah. The structure of the sentence in Arabic, where the word “Allah” is maf’ool muqaddam (i.e., object appearing before the subject?) emphasises the fact that no one fears Allah except those who have knowledge. If the subject were mentioned first, that would change the meaning so that it would mean, “those who have knowledge fear nothing but Allah,” but this is not correct, for there are some knowledgeable people who fear things other than Allah. Hence Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said concerning this verse: This indicates that everyone who fears Allah has knowledge, which is true; it does not indicate that everyone who has knowledge fears Him. From Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 7/539. And Allah knows best.

Acquiring knowledge at a older age

Q: Is it possible for someone who is twenty-five years old and has only been committed for about two and a half years, and has only memorized three juz’ of the Quran, to seek Islamic knowledge? A: Praise be to Allah. You should note that the greatest blessing that Allah can bestow upon His slave is to guide him out of misguidance and save him from going astray. When Allah opens the heart of His slave to acquire and teach Islamic knowledge, this is a great honour that Allah bestows upon him. This makes the person more grateful towards his Lord and makes him strive to please Him. That includes striving to acquire the knowledge that has been handed down from the leader of the Messengers (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). With regard to what you mention about being twenty-five years old, what does it matter? You should strive to memorize the Book of Allah and whatever you can of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and useful texts. You should read and study the books of the scholars, and keep company with righteous shaykhs whose ‘aqeedah and understanding are sound, Remember that the path to knowledge is long, but it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy. So strengthen your resolve and seek the help of your Lord, and do not worry about your age. Perhaps

what is left of your life will be better for you than what has passed, by Allah’s leave. Remember that the greatest companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not acquire knowledge until they started to get grey hairs, and they were older than you are now. It did not take long until they became masters of knowledge and worldly leaders. And Allah knows best.

“Seeking knowledge even if you have to go to China” is a false hadeeth Q: Does this hadith “Even if you have to go to China to seek knowledge, go” apply to women too? A: Praise be to Allah. With regard to the hadeeth mentioned, “Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China, for seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim,” In Da’eef alJaami’: “(It is) fabricated.” (no. 906). The proven hadeeth is that which was narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: ‘Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.’” (220. Maajah) What is meant by knowledge here is knowledge of sharee’ah (Islamic knowledge). Al-Thawri said: “It is the knowledge for which no person has any excuse for not knowing.” And Allah knows best.
