Safeguard Your Health and Happiness …

Who Will Take Care of Me when I’m Old? Plan Now to Safeguard Your Health and Happiness in Old Age

BY JOY LOVERDE According to the Journals of Gerontology, “one in three baby boomers falls into the category of separated, divorced, widowed, or never married.” Millennials are also following this trend; a recent Gallup poll indicates that 59 percent of the 73 million Millennials are single and have never married. Adding fuel to the fire is the caregiver crisis – the decline in the number of people available to provide in-home care, including family members. Longevity, singledom and isolation is a recipe for disaster. Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old? Plan Now to Safeguard Your Health and Happiness in Old Age by Joy Loverde is a step-by-step guide to living the life you want for as long as possible. Loverde, the author of the best-seller The Complete Eldercare Planner, has received excellent reviews from experts in the field. Bob Blancato, chairman of the American Society on Aging, stated her new book is a “clear, practical, relevant, vital… this book engages readers to create their own customizable plan for aging. tionally worthwhile read.” According to Sherrill Wayland MSW, manager of national project SAGE Advocacy and Services for LGBT elders, “[Her] book is the support many are looking for.” Dilip V. Jeste, M.D., director, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, University of California, San Diego, said, “This book effectively chal-

lenges the notion that aging means disability and with that, stigma of being old.” According to David Schless, president, American Seniors Housing Association, Washington, D.C., Loverde’s book “...thoughtfully discusses a wide range of crucial life issues with deep understanding, complete candor, and inspired guidance for all.” Loverde has spent a lifetime interacting with thousands of true experts — the elderly. Using their advice as a blueprint, Loverde outlines five sections to think about and get in order when planning for old age:

personal readiness, housing, relationships (including beloved pets), chronic illness and health, and end of life. Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old? includes: •Making friends in later life and creating a support network •Customizable checklists and worksheets •Making a home age-friendly and exploring alternate home options •The fierce urgency of money •Planning for livable neighborhoods and living-inplace •Essential questions to ask professionals •LGBTQ+-friendly and dementia-friendly communities •Just shoot me is not a plan •Trends, resources, and websites Joy Loverde is a consultant, keynote speaker, and spokesperson for the mature-market industry. Her work has been featured on NBC’s Today Show, the CBS Early Show, NPR, and in USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. The book is available in paperback, kindle, audio, and large print. Aging LifeCare Associates …

Who They Are and What They Do BY PATRICIA PLAYER MAXWELL Formerly referred to as Geriatric Care Managers, Aging LifeCare Associates are “specialized case workers who focus on holistic geriatric care management. Like a social worker, an Aging LifeCare professional can be an excellent resource for both family caregivers and isolated older adults, providing help and advocacy across a variety of disciplines.” Aging LifeCare Associates generally, but not always, have a background in nursing, social work, or gerontology. They provide a holistic client-centered approach to caring for older adults or others facing ongoing health challenges. Aging LifeCare Associates provide answers, support and advocacy at times of uncertainty and – in short – peace of mind. Care Managers become the project manager in the life of the individual needing care and support. They have the ability to fulfill almost all the needs an elder will want in their aging journey. The LifeCare Associate will also work to find the most cost-effective path to quality care, taking into consideration the client’s insurance and a myriad of other possibly available resources. Care Managers can become a trusted advisor in helping to navigate the BORN

intricate web of different needs to provide quality of life in the later years, always mindful of their client’s financial resources and abilities. There are many Aging LifeCare individuals now in the field. Choosing the

Good “chemistry” between the client and care giver is key. right one is a major concern and should be done with care. You should look for the expertise, relevant experience, and background provided by members of the Aging LifeCare Association. It is always wise to request references, interview more than one candidate, and check out the potential Care Manager’s website. Good “chemistry” between the client and the one chosen is also key. There is no set cost for the associates’ services, with costs in the greater Bay Area running from a range of $90 an hour to almost $300. One should also keep in mind that a good Care Manager can help save expensive mistakes when planning and paying for geriatric care. They can provide recommendations for sound, ethical, well-tried resources to do everything from down-sizing, rendering geriatrics-focused medical care, and selecting the residential situation best suited to a client’s needs – be it

cise, and advise or mediate when family conflicts arise. Hiring an Aging LifeCare Associate should always be accompanied by the signing of a formal agreement clearly delineating the services provided. You will also have to sign a HIPAA form to allow the Care Manager free access to the client’s medical, dental and medication records. Expect also to provide a list of current medications and dosages, as well as a list of the medical professionals involved with the client’s care. A comprehensive recent medical history will also be required, as will designation of a favored pharmacy.

For in-home care, the associate will request a safety check done by a qualified professional to determine what changes, if any, are needed to facilitate the client’s care and mobility. In the case of those with potentially fading memory or capacity capabilities, a professional assessment is often requested. All requests serve to provide knowledgeable, focused and compassionate quality-of-life client care. Often, too, the Care Manager will recommend individuals or companies provide other necessities, such as gardening, housekeeping and shopping. The manager may even recommend appropriate financial and legal services to help pay bills, structure a trust, or preserve a client’s assets. Hiring an experienced LifeCare Associate can provide family and friends with peace of mind, knowing the care of their friend or loved one has been entrusted to a compassionate, caring professional.

Majestic Residences …

Top Senior Housing Provider to Watch Residential care homes are a significant part of the senior living market. In the state of California alone, there are 8,100 licensed residential care facilities for the elderly, and more than 90 percent are licensed for six or fewer beds. Small-home senior living might gain even more popularity in the wake of Covid19, and Majestic Residences wants to be able meet that demand. Phoenix-based Majestic was founded in 2020 by Gene Guarino, who runs the Residential Assisted Living Academy, and Chuck Bongiovanni, founder and former CEO of senior living and care placement service CarePatrol. He stepped down in June 2020 to start the Majestic Residences venture. “We want to organize our homes on one page and under one brand to be a force in the market and get residential care homes recognized,” Bongiovanni said. “They’ve been around for-

ever, but they’re not always recognized as part of the senior care continuum.” Small-format senior living has been gaining steam in recent years, through efforts like Bill Thomas’ Minka model and the rise of pocket neighborhood communities. And Covid-19 might supercharge interest

Small-format senior living has been gaining steam… in small-home senior living, which is easier to manage from an infection-control standpoint than a large building. What distinguishes Majestic from other providers pursuing small homes is that the company operates on a franchise model. Going the franchise route is an attempt at preserving the entrepreneurial spirit of small-home senior living owners and operators while giving them access to more resources and other benefits of scale.

Bongiovanni has significant franchise experience. CarePatrol is a franchise company that was acquired by private equity firm The Riverside Company and is now part of the Best Life Brands platform of integrated companies serving older adults, including home care and estate sales. Franchise-based senior living is a growing trend, and one that could push the industry in new directions. There are several options for how to join the Majestic Residences brand, including converting an existing small-home operation into a franchise or operating a small-home business under a lease arrangement with a separate owner. So far, the company appears to be attracting interest. In its first month, the company awarded 12 franchises, it has more than 40 franchises in the pipeline, and expects to hit 200 by the end of 2022, according to Bongiovanni. Placement agents can earn $3,000 by recommending current Residential Care Homes that would make great franchise partners. For more information, visit majesticresidences.com.

Long-Term Healthcare …

Is it Worth it to you? During our working years, many of us have access to employer-sponsored health insurance plans, either through your or your spouse’s company. After retirement, though, we typically rely on Medicare, plus a Medicare supplement, to cover the ever-increasing cost of healthcare. Unfortunately, though, Medicare doesn’t cover one of the most significant categories of healthcare costs as we age: long-term care. Long-term care is coverage you need while you’re recovering from injury or illness. As we age, we rarely go from acutely sick to perfectly well in a day or two. While Medicare will cover the acutely sick part, it could take weeks or months to get back to a level of wellness in which self-care is possible. The out-of-pocket cost for this type of care can range from $19 an hour to $229 a day*, depending on the level of care you need. That means your retirement nest egg could be gobbled up by just one health crisis re-

quiring long-term care. So what do you do to protect yourself, especially since the federal government’s Administration on Aging tells us that MOST Americans ages 65 and older will in fact need some kind of long-term care?** Long-term care insurance is designed to cover the gap between Medicare and your retirement funds. The younger and healthier you are when you apply, the less expensive the coverage is likely to be. Some insurance companies offer hybrid long-term care/life insurance policies, or long-term care policies that can be shared by spouses. Even if you’re young, healthy and independent today, it’s a great idea to check out long-term care options to determine if such a policy would be of value to you. If you need help evaluating long-term care policies that might support your financial success in retirement, contact us at Pettinelli Financial Partners.

Reverse Mortgage …

Hope is Not a Strategy It’s the beginning of April. Tax season is upon us. Looking back, most of us say 2020 has been well… “What a year!” And looking forward, we need to think about our financial goals and develop an action plan to accomplish those goals. Would you like to find a way to increase cash flow? Did you have a large, unexpected tax bill – perhaps cashed in your 401(k)s without understanding the tax implications? Are you wishing you could downsize from MegaMansion to Cozy Cottage? Would you like to be able to assist your children? Wouldn’t it be nice to have financial peace of mind?

If you are a homeowner 60 or older, financial assistance may lie within the four walls of your home. Homeowners can use a financial tool that allows access to some of the equity in their home without any

A tremendously powerful tool for financial peace of mind … monthly mortgage payments. That tool is a Reverse Mortgage. Loan proceeds can be used for any reason whatsoever, after the Reverse Mortgage pays off your current loans and judgments. You can remodel your home (so that you can safe-

ly “age in place”), pay for in-home care or outside care for a loved one, or gift funds to family members who may need assistance. AND a Reverse Mortgage can even be used to purchase a new home. A Reverse Mortgage loan is a tremendously powerful financial tool. But it is not right for everyone and not everyone will qualify. So do the work — hope is NOT a strategy. For the straight scoop — fact from fiction — and a no obligation review of the details to see if a Reverse Mortgage could benefit you, please contact me. Senility not the Only Target for Exploitation …

Vulnerability Is Not Limited to Mental Impairment BY PAMELA S. K. GLASNER A Wall Street Journal blogger posted a brief article on June 14, 2012, entitled “Financial Abuse of Elderly: Getting Worse.” She said, in part, “Medical professionals can play an important role when they are trained to spot and report the warning signs of elderly investment fraud or financial exploitation. The Investor Protection Trust has trained 3,000 medical professionals so far to spot the impaired mental capacity that can leave older adults vulnerable to financial abuse.” That’s all well and good, but with all due respect to the article’s author and those conducting the survey, the answer is just not that simple. In fact, the matter of vulnerability is addressed quite extensively in my documentary, Last Will and Embezzlement. Mental impairment is far from the only, or even primary, reason an elderly person gets financially abused. My mother, who was at the foundation of the documentary’s creation, did not have any such impairment. She had a whole different set of issues. I grew up in a pleasant, middle class neighborhood in Queens, New York City, and my parents did what most of the parents in that neighborhood did: they

waited for their kids to graduate from high school and then moved to Florida. But, eventually, what started off as an escape and

a dream became a prison and a nightmare. As my parents and their neighbors aged in place, geographical areas where empty-nesters tended to cluster became the perfect hunting grounds for the vultures who profit from preying on the elderly. My mother, an elderly woman of 89 at the time, had two children (my brother and me), but we lived 130 miles and 1,300 miles away, respectively. My dad, the 90-year-old love of her life, whom she’d been with for literally 80 years, was permanently moved into a nursing home, leaving her suddenly on her own. She was a proud and intelligent woman with a history of being what my brother and I used to describe as “the best business person we’d ever known.” But a bout with glaucoma left her unable to drive, so she had to rely on the good will of others. And in an

instant, alone for the first time in her life, she was transformed from “strong and independent” to “the perfect vulnerable victim.” Mom never let on that there was a problem, and there was no reason for either my brother or me to presume to keep a watchful eye on her finances or on whom she chose as friends and associates. We’d never been involved with financial exploitation and had no notion of what was happening until it was way past too late. Ethel Glasner was not mentally impaired. She was 89, alone and lonely and, for the first time in her life, physically dependent; therefore, she was the perfect target. This is not to say that what the Investor Protection Trust is doing has no value (far from it), but there are probably as many ways to financially exploit the elderly as there are elderly people to exploit. Vulnerability comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s vital that we, as a society, start learning what those shapes and sizes look like, and what the signs are. Vulnerability is absolutely NOT limited to mental impairment, and it is dangerous to assume that diminished capacity is the perpetrator’s only (or even primary) avenue in.

Pamela S. K. Glasner is a published author and filmmaker. Even Elderly Homes Need Some TLC …

The Historic Smith House in Los Altos Built from 1901 to 1905 by Oregon native, J. Gilbert Smith, this craftsman-style farm house typifies the early orchard homes of the local area. Originally situated on 14-plus acres of prize-winning apricot orchards, the Smiths lived in the home from 1901 until 1973. In 1954, the City of Los Altos purchased the property, including the house and the 10.44 acres of apricot orchards, as the site for the Civic Center with the Smiths retaining lifetime residency of the house and a surrounding acre. Upon Mrs. Smith’s death in 1973, the home and one acre reverted to the City. Since completed in 1905, the house has been refurbished with an outside stairway and retrofitted for earthquakes and fire. The house was designated a historical landmark in 1981. Pre-COVID, students were able to visit the house on field trips, and visitors could take docent-led tours. At present, the house remains temporarily closed to the public, but self-guided room-toroom 3-D tours, created by VirtualEyes Media, are available on the museum’s website. “We’ve been wanting to create a 3-D tour of the Smith House for a long time, but the pandemic made this project much more urgent,” said Dr. Amy Ellison, the Museum’s exhibition curator. “Since we weren’t able to have docent-led tours or class field trips this year, we knew we had to find a different way for people to experience the museum. It’s been incredibly exciting to use technology to make our historic house more accessible to visitors.” VirtualEyes Media shot photos of the house similar to how real estate companies show houses online. Members of the Smith House and Education committees also provided content, including stories about the Smith Family, the architecture of the home, and references to the 1930s. Visitors can “walk” through the house and click on the stories they want to read or access audio and video clips. “We’re so excited to offer a new way to experience this iconic Los Altos landmark. And, while it can’t replace visiting the Smith House in person, we hope it provides greater access to the house and helps to preserve the Smith Family’s history for future generations,” said Ellison. To view the 3-D tours, visit losaltoshistory.org/SmithHouse. The Los Altos History Museum is located at 51 S. San Antonio Road in Los Altos; phone 650-948-9427. BORN
