AquaKit System for Villagers Living Without Mains Water Graduation Project March - June 2013
Exhibited at:
In collaboration with:
BACKGROUND In Turkey, according to Ministry of Interior, General Directorate of Local Authorities (2011), there are nearly 15.000 villages and arable fields that does not have water plumbing system.
This situation forces villagers to carry water from fountains, which are usually located at the center of the village.
Villagers carry water from 3 to 10 times a day. However, carrying the water is not the only problem. They store water in plastic buckets, use pitcher to wash their hands and use bowl and bucket to wash the dishes, for flushing and showering.
Farmers got used to live this way, since they have been living like this for many years. However, there is a great potential for an affordable product to break this cycle and improve the life standards of these people.

RESEARCH Under the guidance of Human Centered Design Toolkit (IDEO), I conducted a field research to a local village area near Beypazari, Ankara.
I also got some inspiration from the book Design for the Other 90% (Smith), which got me some courage to deal with this huge problem.

FINAL PRODUCT SYSTEM WATER CONTAINER
LID & TAP
It has 10 liters of water capacity. It is used with a metal stand that provides clean contact, tap height and tapers the container so that all the water goes towards the lid.
Quick connection detail provides easy connection of the tap. User can adjust the position of the tap easily, since it has a flexible hose.

FINAL PRODUCT SYSTEM CARRYING CART Villagers can carry up to six containers at a time. The cart has large tires to cope with harsh terrains. Steel structure makes the cart long lasting.
11
www.aburakaktas.com
The main structure is made with just two cnc bended pipes, from a single 600cm standard pipe, which lowers the manufacturing costs significantly.

FINAL PRODUCT SYSTEM FUNNEL
FILLING ATTACHMENT
It eases the process of filling containers from a well with a pump. It can be screwed on the container for stable filling. The openings on the sides enable air to go out. It can be carried on the cart’s pipe. It can be also used to fill the container with hot water at home.
It is screwed to the fountain pipe in the village, after cutting thread inside of it. It has a tapered screw head in order to fit more than one pipe. When the valve is turned, water goes through the hose.

FINDINGS
Water is everything. But we use excessive amount of water in our bathrooms.
We use approximately 100 liters of water for a 10 minute shower.
And 38 liters of water for washing our clothes in piles, which is an exhausting activity.
What if we were able to use the same water for those two activities?
