Landform slopes containing occupiable outdoor garden space

LANDFORM AS SUBURBIA
Every opening/courtyard (3) “ground” extends out. This helps with easy movement around and into the spaces.
Many vertical circulation cores are made available. People can move by sweeping planes, vertical motion, stairs, and cars in this suburban building.
Terraces
Help provide out door space for different function, happen on the land sweeping in and out of the building.

SUBURBIA AS LANDFORM FALL 2021 RESEARCH
Demographic trends that fueled the suburban boom of the early 1900s are entering a period of significant change, referring to the measurable characteristics of a population. By 2050, the US population will double that in 2000, with half living in the suburbs. The architectural form of suburbia must evolve to accommodate new and denser user groups. The driving architectural critique of this thesis on suburbia explores the ground vs building relationships and how it relates to density. Early studies of massing and section diagrams led to the idea of an occupied, artificial ground for suburban houses.
These studies made the relationship between suburbia, density, and the ground plane became more apparent, and introduced the concepts of “landform building” and “mat building” to my work.
Stan Allen discussed Landform building through four main ideas: form, scale, atmosphere, and process. Landscape Building utilizes the advantages of new technologies in emerging fabrication and materiality to construct new artificial environments. Landscape building seeks to rethink the architecture’s relationship to the ground, no longer occupying a given site but constructing the site itself with new formal strategies and technical problems within architecture itself. I also draw on the historical precedent of the Mat Building, with its emphasis on low-rise, high density, homogeneous layout, and systematic repetition. The next step explored part-to-whole relationships through massing studies of pixelization, shapy, and complex surfaces.
Can a reimagined suburbia live within a mixed-use landform building that combines density with detached houses with yards?
FORMS
Studing of the part-to-whole relationships through massing in three formats, pixelization, shapy, and complex surfaces
GROUND VS BUILDING
Study of the generic ground vs building relationship, in referenc to Landform tecnique. Blocks follow four conditions: hover, sit, bury, or inserts.

INTER-GENERATIONAL HOUSING TOWER
Istanbul, Turkey
Inter-generational living with community amenities such as healthcare, child care, laundry, fitness, religious spaces.
Turkish culture is family oriented, with multiple generations living near or together. Those consisting of more than two generations living under the same roof. Reasons for intergenerational living include, sharing knowledge and history economic or care giving, closer family interactions, and cultural norms.
Turkey was selected as the site due to its location between Asia and Europe, the threshold between worlds, and rich history.
DOUBLE HEIGHT LIVING SPACE
The housing units have options for connections with the above units, seen here in the doubleheight view into the living space.
VIEW INTO ENTRY HALL
The homes entry remains an important aspect in the units, as entrances hold cultural significance with in the regions culture.
LIVING SPACE
View into the living space, a common theme seen in the use of fold-able doors, to arrange the space for appropriate use.
STAIR COURTYARD
The central stair, holds a special connection to the culture and allows for a covered courtyard space, allowing multiple units to connect depending how many units one family needs.

MAJIA ISOLA TEXTILE MUSEUM
New York, NY
The studio engages specifically with mid-century designers and architects. This museum celebrates the textile and production work of late Finnish designer, Majia Isola, who produced a variety of colorful works.
She primarily focused on form and nature, creating a playful collection that fashion company, Marimekko, still produces today.
The museum aims to display her “original” prints and produced “objects” through unique and funky forms and structures, to fully engage the visitors.
